From Tiger to Goldfish
Josh is my 10-year- old grandson. I love him so much that I find it very difficult to refuse any one of his requirements. Besides, he is good at persuading me. So, it’s really a big challenge to take him out sometimes. But now, I consider myself to be quite courageous. Perhaps that’s why I recently decided to take him to a fair.
At the first ringtoss booth, Josh was absolutely certain that he could win that five foot-tall tiger because he told me he was a real expert at tossing rings. They had such kind of game played at school and he practiced a lot at school. He told me that he was often the winner of the ringtoss. The guy in the booth said, “You could buy one ring for 50 cents, or three for $ 1. But if you wanted a real bargain, you could get 20 rings for $ 5.”
Of course, Josh said, “We should go for the bargain.” I thought about arguing with him by saying that an expert ringtosser like him would need only one ring. But I knew this was not an argument I was going to win. So I pulled out the $ 5 bill and placed it on the counter. Twenty rings later, he still didn’t have the tiger. “But now I see how to do this," Josh said. “Let’s buy another 20 rings, and I’ll get it this time.”
Well, he never did get the tiger, but there were plenty more places where we could spend our money. Josh was equally unsuccessful at the next several booths. My wallet was getting thinner. And then we spotted the booth that Josh positively could not miss: the goldfish booth, All you had to do was toss a ping- pong ball into just one of the many fishbowls, and you could go home with your very own goldfish.

Our Garden and the Salad
“Christine, come and help me in the garden. I want to plant all of the seeds today.” My father was calling to me. “I'm busy...” I said. I didn't understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
By the end of April, his plants had come up in neat rows. Unfortunately, in early May, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He was in hospital for about two months and during that time he often asked me about his garden. Even after he came home, he had to stay in bed for a while.
My mother had several business trips so I said that I would take care of his garden. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often so I didn't think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning in July, my father said to me, “Christine, I think that the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let's have a salad today!” I took a bowl and went out to the garden. I looked at the leaves and was upset to see that many of the leaves had been half eaten. There were hundreds of bugs (虫子) all over them! I tried to get them off, but there were just too many. I looked at the carrots next, but they didn't look healthy.
I got in panic for a moment, but then thought of a good idea. I quietly went to the nearest store to buy some vegetables. I went back home and cut them up to make a salad for my father. When I gave it to him, he said, “Oh, Christine, what a beautiful salad! You must be taking very good care of my garden.” My father looked happy, but I felt a little bit guilty.

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a hose ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

You Will Always Be My Teacher, Grandpa
Chitose was leaving for France to get further study. However, the last lesson was a disaster. Chitose and her grandpa had a huge fight. She arrived at the studio smiling and said, “Look Grandpa, I painted this portrait of you.” The man in the portrait had a lot of hair, stood straight, looked young, and smiled. Chitose might be talented enough to attend an art college in France, but she has a big weakness as an artist. When she paints a person, too often she paints an idealized image rather than the real person. Grandpa had been explaining this point to her for several months, but she just wouldn’t listen.
Grandpa got a little angry and said to her, “This is not me, and you are not a real artist.” She got angry too and said she didn’t care because she didn’t need him as a teacher anymore. Grandpa then showed her the portrait he had painted as her farewell gift and said, “This is the real you!” She took one look at it and said, “No, it isn’t!” and then left.
Grandpa gave the portrait of Chitose to her parents. He had done the portrait a couple of months before Chitose started changing her style, and he thinks it shows the high school student he taught for two years. When Grandpa painted it, she still had her natural curly hair. She was not wearing all the accessories (配饰) she has now, including the ring shaped earrings she loves. She also never wore makeup then. This was a Chitose with a fantastic future who knew she was still an amateur artist. But now she is getting older and wants to act and look more like an adult. However, she will never become a great artist if she stops learning.

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The concept of comfort zone (舒适区) refers to a psychological state in which we feel safe and do not experience anxiety or fear. It is a “space” that we know completely and in which we control almost everything.
Your comfort zone represents things you’re familiar with, your regular haunts, friends you’re at ease with, and activities you love doing. Your comfort zone’s risk free. It’s easy. It doesn’t cause you to stretch. Within these boundaries we feel safe and secure.
During my senior year in college I was short a few credits, and so I skimmed through the class schedule looking for something to fill the hours. When I came across “Private Voice Instruction” as in singing lessons, I thought, “Why not step outside my comfort zone and give it a try?”
I was careful to sign up for private lessons instead of group lessons because I didn’t want to make a fool of myself by singing in front of other students.
Things went fine until the end of the semester when my singing professor brought the shocking news. “By the way, Sean, have you decided which song you want to sing at the recital?” “What do you mean?” I asked in horror.
“Well, the class requirements state that you have to sing at least one time in front of the other private voice students.”
“That would not be a good idea,” I said emphatically.
“Oh, it’s no big deal. You’ll do fine.”
Well, to me it was a huge deal. The thought of singing in front of a group made me physically sick. “How am I going to get out of this one?” I thought. But I couldn’t allow myself to do that because I had been speaking to various groups over the past year advising them to never let fears make their decisions.
“Courage, Sean.” I kept saying in my mind. “You’ve got to at least try.”

6.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Tom was the school tough guy because his dad was a tough guy. If anyone dared to disobey him, they received a good beating.
Until Victor arrived, that was. No one would have said that Victor or his dad looked like tough guys: they were small and had no muscles. However, this was what Victor said to Tom when Tom went up to him to make him afraid.
“Hey new kid. You should know that I’m the leader, and I’m the toughest guy here. ‘‘
”You might be the leader but I am toughest guy here. ‘‘
That was when Victor got his first beating. The second was the day Tom tried to take a girl’s sandwich from her. ‘‘This girl is a friend of mine and I am the toughest guy in school. So she won’t give you her sandwich’’ – were Victor’s last words before the blows started raining down on him.
His third beating came when he didn’t want to hand over his own sandwich and had to fight for his lunch.
‘‘Tough guys like my dad and me don’t steal from others because stealing is not right, and you are supposed to be a tough guy too?’’ he replied.
Victor got hit regularly, but he never backed down. The fact that he was so brave in defending those weaker than him began to impress the rest of his classmates, and he soon gain many admirers. Lots of other children began to play with him, so Tom had even fewer chances to hit Victor and his friends, and fewer and fewer children were scared of Tom. New brave boys and girls appeared who copied Victor’s attitude, and the playground became a better place.
One day, at the school door, Tom’s giant dad asked him who Victor was.
‘‘That small kid with little strength is the tough guy who’s the new boss of the playground? You’re useless! I’m going to hit you and show you what a tough guy really is! ‘‘

There are many things in senior middle school that I still remember clearly. I studied three years in a country school, which is faraway. However, it has a good environment and strict but kind teachers, so I loved the school and all my teachers very much. One Friday, just as we began to read books in reading class at our desks, our teacher, Mrs. Hill, said that she needed to be out of the classroom for a few minutes. She asked the class to read in silence while she was gone. And she said that those who didn’t read books in silence would have to answer to her when she returned. It was well-known that Mrs. Hill was strict. So we had to be on our best behavior.
But that Friday, Mrs. Hill hadn’t been gone for ten seconds before some students in the classroom started to talk. From one corner of the classroom I heard Josh ask Nick, “Can I trade my candies for your toy?” At the other end of the room I heard Samantha tell Kayla, “Let’s sit together on the bus for the museum field trip tomorrow.” And so it went all around me, until about half of the students talked with each other.
After a while, I, too, forgot about Mrs. Hill’s instructions. I turned back and asked my friend Liza, “Can I borrow your storybook and keep it for a day?” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, Mrs. Hill walked into the classroom. The whole class returned to silence immediately. And we were full of fear.
Mrs. Hill slowly looked around the classroom and said, “If you were talking while I was gone, then please stand up.” The guilt (内疚) suddenly weighed heavily on me. “I shouldn’t have talked while she was not in the classroom. And now I should be honest and admit my mistake bravely. This is what my parents have always told me, “I thought. Then, I summoned up (鼓起) my courage to stand up, worrying about the punishment that waited for me. Then I looked around.

When I was in high school, I had a dream: to appear in a television program. I was too shy to share my dream with my teacher, however, or anyone else—except my parents. To me, it sounded like a dream that could never come true.
People often told me I could be a nurse, a teacher, or a hairdresser, which I thought were all great careers. But that was not what I wanted. Thankfully, my parents had raised me and my siblings to have lots of confidence. Both my parents, especially my dad, often said, “You can do anything you want to.”
With his encouragement, I applied to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson University in Toronto. I was overjoyed when I was admitted. I really loved the program and worked hard —and I was named the most outstanding graduate of the year. Just by getting into Ryerson and graduating at the top of the class, I began to think that maybe my dream could come true.
After I graduated, I applied to the CBC and CTV for a job. They both said the same thing: “We love your education, but you don’t have any experience. Come back when you get some!” And I kept saying, “How can I get this experience? I’ve been busy getting an education.” They both turned me down.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself, “I’m new and they’re new. Why not give it a try?” I didn’t know anyone there, so if I was going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I found out who the president was and decided to call him directly. What could I lose? I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, “Good! That’s exactly what you should do.”

Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party.
“But I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don’t like her!”
“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to party but you, you’ll feel left out. It would be a big mistake not to invite Lucy to the party.”
“She never even talks to me!”
Dad sighed and moved down the aisle. “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn’t know one single person in the school. She left all of her to get to know everyone.”
“No, it won’t. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!” Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes.
“Madison, I’m done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!”
On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope (缰绳).
Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy.
The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.

It was a Friday afternoon. In Brooklyn Junior Middle School, the bell indicating the end of the last class threw the whole classroom into chaos. All the boys and girls started packing their school bags, chattering with each other about their exciting plans for the long-anticipated weekend at the same time.
Miss Helen, the headteacher, stepped into the noisy classroom. She quieted the kids, assigned the homework and added: “The first teacher-parent meeting of this term will take place tomorrow morning. Please...”
Bill’s heart sank.
Bill was a 12-year-old boy in Grade 7. His father was a sailor. He had to work at sea most of the year and did not get home often. However, this didn’t make Bill an eccentric (性格古怪的) and withdrawn boy.
As a matter of fact, at school, Bill was a typical student favored by all the teachers in his class. He was never late for school, always active in class, always polite to the teachers and always friendly and helpful towards his classmates, not to mention his outstanding academic performance.
It was all because of his kind, considerate and devoted mum, a perfect mum in Bill’s eyes, except for one thing: She walked with a pronounced limp (跛行). Bill remembered when young, maybe about 3 or 4 years old, he once asked her mum about it, but his mum just smiled and told him she was born like this. Bill loved his mum very much but he seldom went out with his mum. He just hated it when others eyed, whispered or inquired about that, curiously, kindly or sympathetically.
And now, this would be the first time for his new classmates and teachers to meet his mother and he would be embarrassed by her appearance.
That evening, Bill called his father and complained about his absence and the upcoming meeting.

As we got down to the last ball, I was secretly relieved that the goldfish would be staying at the fair. As I had expected, Josh missed every toss successfully. But wait! It was the last day of the fair, and the guy in the booth didn’t want to take those fish home. So he was giving them away to anyone who played. “You’re a winner!” he told Josh as he scooped a goldfish into a plastic bag filled with water and handed it over to Josh.
The look of pure happiness on Josh’s face made the entire fair experience one to treasure. No amount of money can buy that joy. Josh decided that we could not spend another second at the fair. No, we had to rush home to get the fish into a proper tank because living in a plastic bag was not a good experience for this darling little creature, which he immediately named Goldie.

After realizing her weakness, She started learning again and her art got much better.
Chitose painted a portrait of her grandpa and herself. The portrait won first prize in a young artists competition. She painted herself like her grandpa did, as Chitose the high school student with a lot of potential. She also painted her grandpa as she really sees him. The wrinkles are proof of his wisdom. That frightening day finally arrived. As I entered the classroom, I kept trying to convince myself, “Just cheer up, OK? This can’t be that bad.” Now it was my turn. As I stood in front of the class, which was far away from my comfort zone, I kept repeating to myself, “Courage! Relax! Take it easy! Just perform your best! ” It turned out that I did such a great job that all the students applauded my performance warmly.
I left the classroom as if a heavy load had been lifted. Although that experience nearly killed me, I felt a great sense of personal accomplishment on my way home. I was so proud of myself and I frankly didn’t care what anyone else thought about my performance. What really mattered was that I had survived. Stepping out of your comfort zone will never be easy, but afterward you’ll always be glad you did it.

Tom’s dad wanted to be that tough too, and so, that day, they communicated with each other all afternoon and left as friends, having learnt that being a tough guy is about what is inside, because that is where tough guys get the strength to help others and fight against unfairness.

Unexpectedly, Mrs. Hill was quite amazed by my answer and praised me for that. Then she returned to the front of the classroom and explained why we should be honest.
With Mrs. Hill’s encouragement, another student stood up. Then more students followed until about half of the students stood up. Seeing it, Mrs. Hill praised us for our courage. I want to be an addition to your studio.” To my delight, Mr. Slaight offered me a chance to try out for the show. At the studio, everything went beautifully and they hired me on the spot.
A week later, my big day for the stage came. I was about to get on the stage when negative thoughts flooded into my mind. “What if the audience don’t like me?” Then with my father’s words echoing in my mind, I replaced the negative thoughts with positive ones. “This is going to be the best show ever. You are going to just shine!” I told myself. My positive thinking worked. Soon I restored my confidence. It turned out a good show and was the beginning of my hundreds of television shows. And my success came from picking up the courage to make that phone call.

9.Lucy’s present was the very last to be opened. Worrying that it would ruin the party, Madison grabbed the present reluctantly and ripped open the gift-wrap paper. Inside was a delicately hand-made lead rope! Shocked, she widened her eyes, covering her hands over her mouth. “It’s a lead rope for your horse Star. I made it by myself!” Madison pulled it out of the box and placed it on her lap, amazed at its beauty. Lucy added, “I heard you talking about your horse at school. That’s when I got the idea to make you a lead rope. ”
Deeply moved by what she said, Madison held the lead rope tightly in her hands. It was, by far, her very favorite birthday present of the day. She suddenly felt so bad because she had been so mean to Lucy. With tears swirling in her eyes, she blinked hard to fight them back, feeling a mixture of regret and gratitude. “Thanks so much for this lead rope. I love it! Would you like to join us and be our friends?” Lucy nodded cheerfully. Madison put her arm around Lucy’s shoulders, both smiling. With applause and laughter echoing through the house, Lucy joined the other girls to enjoy the party.

But for the fireman...” For a moment, Bill just froze there speechless, as if overwhelmed by what he heard: Mum wasn’t born lame. She got injured to protect me! Picturing the slim but strong figure in the fire, Bill couldn’t contain himself any more, tears rolling down his cheeks.
