“Wake up, Mom!” I felt a little hand on my face and reluctantly opened my eyes. There was my son, ready to start the day. I also heard my babies awake in the next room. Ready or not, the day had begun!
I loved being home with my little ones, but I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders. My husband and I had just bought a house, and some unexpected expenses made our budget tighter than it had ever been. I was weary of spending more pennies. We weren’t foolish with our money. We worked hard. We were doing all the right things, but we had had one financial disappointment after another.
I was going to pick up my kids’ photo portraits from the studio at the local mall. Despite our small budget, it was important to me to have pictures of my children as they were growing up. The previous week, I had found a coupon (优惠券) and used some change from the car to buy a $7.99 portrait package, and today was the day I was to pick up the portraits. Since we were going to the mall, I decided to make it an outing and packed some sandwiches for us to eat at the food court. What’s more, there are many ride-on toy cars in the mall’s food court for fun and for free.
After breakfast, we went off. After we parked, we walked into the portrait studio at the mall, and I approached the counter. The young woman smiled.
    “May I help you?”
“Yes, I’m here to pick up our photos.”
The woman asked my name and opened her drawer. “Ah, yes, here they are. Aren’t they just so adorable?” She took out the photos, and the smiling faces of my kids warmed my heart.
“Yes, they are great. Thank you,” I said.
She put the photos into an envelope. Then she spread out additional photos of my kids that I hadn’t ordered. I knew what that meant. The upsell pitch (推销) was coming.
“Would you like to purchase these extra portraits? They are only fifteen dollars apiece!” she smiled sweetly.

It was one o’clock in the morning. In the Ritesville art gallery, a window opened and a man came in. His name was Harry Black, and he was a thief. It was dark in the gallery, but Harry had a light. He looked across the room at a painting.
    “There it is!” he said.
Harry moved quickly across the room. He stood and looked at the painting.
“A million dollars for this?” he thought. “I don’t understand it.”
But he took a knife from his coat. Then he took the painting very, very slowly from its frame(画框). Harry went back across the room to the window, but he walked into a table. There was a beautiful blue glass vase on the table. It fell onto the floor and broke into pieces. He ran across the pieces of glass to the window.
He had rented a room in Janey Allen’s house. He went quietly up to his room and closed the door. In his room, Harry took the painting from his bag. He wrapped it with a newspaper and put it under his bed.
In the morning. Janey was putting old bottles into a box. On the TV, a reporter was at the Ritesville art gallery. He was talking about the lost painting and the broken glass vase. Janey glanced at a photo of a blue vase.
At that time Harry wasn’t in his room. He was talking on his telephone. Janey was looking for old newspapers. Every Friday morning, she took then from every room in the house. Then later, the newspaper recycling truck arrived.
Janey opened Harry’s door and looked into his room. She always took his old newspapers or bottles for recycling. She found a newspaper under Harry’s bed. She put the old newspaper into a black recycling box. Then she ran from the house and saw the truck. “Wait!” she said. And she quickly gave the box to one of the men.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy—his name was Bernard—had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don’t see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.” “So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried,“I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one.“I tell you what we can do,”said John.“You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn (爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

    4.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Fifty years ago, we saw a house in the South Farmingdale, North Massapequa area. The house is located on the ground floor. It is not only well lit, but also has a small garden. My husband and I fell in love with the house. The price was within our reach. Without hesitation we made our decision to buy it.
But there was one problem. It was a corner property. We both agreed there had to be a fence. So after moving in, my husband put up a fence and I painted it white.
How times flies! There have been many changes in our lives since that fence went up. My four children often enjoyed themselves in the garden. Our family had a happy family life in the garden. Now my four children have grown up and moved out. Most of the old neighbours have been replaced with new ones. It was last week that a young couple moved in next door to me. They have three children. Some of them go to school. Sometimes they play in the yard. When I saw their happy family, I felt as if I had gone through decades ago.
However, the fence remains, and at the moment, so do I. The fence has been repaired more often than I can remember. Most times a broken board or two was suddenly repaired. During the past ten years, it has been repainted professionally.
But more seriously, the white fence had turned green with mildew (霉菌). The boards were too old to paint. So this spring I had it rebuilt and repainted. I was satisfied with the rebuilt and repainted fence because it brought me back to my happy memory.
In a week, however, I was shocked to discover that a part of it was destroyed. A post (桩) was broken and some boards were left lying on the ground.

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum”, Peter said, “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: literature,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark(评分) your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment”, Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “literature” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “L-I-T-E-R-A-T-R-U-E”, he whispered. He spelled it wrong.
Paragraph 1. “What should I do?” Peter said to himself.

I first saw little Tommy under an old Joshua tree on the school playground in Los Angeles as his elementary school teacher. As the school year progressed, a special friendship between us began to develop.
One day in mid-October, I was in the school office when Tommy’s teacher dashed in carrying Tommy, who was sobbing with a handkerchief wrapped around his seriously bleeding index finger (食指). The bathroom door had slammed on his finger, leaving the tip fallen onto the floor. Our school bus driver rushed us immediately to the Emergency Room.
The doctor was waiting for us. Sadly, after a careful check. I knew from the look on his face that it was too late for a stitch surgery. Tommy was lying on a flat bed, having been sobbing a lot with his chest still heaving. I gently brushed the tears from his cheeks, feeling helpless. Then suddenly, an idea came to me. Bending over, I whispered in his ear, “Tommy, did you know that geckos (our local lizards) grow their tails back and little boys can grow their fingers back too?”
Tommy’s soft green eyes grew wide with excitement. “Really?” he asked, obviously astonished by the thought. I answered with certainty and decided to teach him the ancient local methods of visual imagery and confirmation that I had learned in my youth under the guidance of elder specialists. I find it encouraging that researchers at major universities are now confirming this ancient wisdom.
As Tommy closed his eyes, l began, “Now Tommy, tell your finger in your heart how much you love and need it.” I could see Tommy’s little face focused in deep concentration. “Tell your finger that you need it to dial the phone.” I paused, watching his little lips silently repeat my words. “I waited for another moment and then continued. “Now just say, grow for me, finger. I love you and 1 need you.”
After a few moments, Tommy opened his eyes, his tear-stained face lit up. I continued, “Remember to do this every time you think of it during the day.” He nodded seriously. Kissing him on the forehead. I said my good-byes and closed the door.

Mary waited anxiously for her turn in the empty dressing room. Never had she been so nervous before. This competition was of vital importance to her comeback. “If I can win today,”she said to herself,“I can dance on the national stage next month.” Three months ago,her left arm was seriously injured in a car accident. After the medical treatment, she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills.
“Hi,Mary,”in rushed her friend Jessica. “How is your arm? Is it going to influence your performance?”
“I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match.” said Mary with a determined look.
“Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real well-matched competitor. Come on!”
After Jessica left,Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin. “If I don’t try harder,I won’t grasp this chance.” She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. “Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?” she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.
A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said “Hi,I’m Linda. I am the next one!” Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. “This is just my competitor. Because of her,I may lose tonight.” Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream,“Oh,God,I can’t find my music tape!” Linda searched her bag but in vain. “It may be missing on the way.” With these words, she then rushed out.

Sadie looked out of the window and sighed (叹气) as she thought about another long, boring day of summer. She wondered what all of her friends from school were doing on their summer vacations. It had to be a lot better than looking out of a window. Sadie thought about the fun she had last summer when she and her best friend Allison went to the beach. They built sandcastles, played beach volleyball, and even tried surfing. But they wouldn’t be going to the beach together this summer because Allison had moved to a different city far away from Sadie’s.
Suddenly, Sadie had an idea. She could call her friend Wendy, who always had funny ideas. Maybe they could ride their bikes together around the park. Sadie raced to the living room, picked up the phone, and called Wendy. She sighed more deeply as the phone rang and rang. Then Sadie seated herself on the sofa, picked up the television remote, and put it down again. She didn’t really want to watch television, so she went to her room and found the list of phone numbers of her good friends from school. In the living room, she called almost each of them, but no one was at home.
After hanging up the phone, Sadie wandered into the kitchen and sat down at the table, watching her mom do the cleaning. “Mom, I don’t have anyone to hang out with because my friends from school aren’t home and Allison moved away,” said Sadie. “Honey, there are many things you can do by yourself, like playing your guitar or having a walk in the garden. You could even finish that story about our camping trip,” said Mom.
“I don’t want to do those things by myself. I want to play with a friend.” “Sometimes, it is nice to do things by yourself,” said Mom. “I like seeing my friends, but I also like doing things alone like taking a walk by myself or finding a quiet spot to read. Why not have a try?”

    The Cup of Coffee
It was supposed to be a normal trip to the supermarket. My son was little, and it was getting close to time to have a little sleep, so I was rushing through the aisles trying to avoid a failure. I remember feeling a sense of achievement as I got him into the car without any tears. Then I went to start the car and realized my keys were gone. After a few minutes of checking around, I realized that I must have locked them in the trunk with my bag.
I wasn’t sure what to do, so I took my son out of his car seat and went back inside the store with my cart still full of groceries. I had to use their phones to call my husband for the spare key because my phone was in the bag I had locked in the trunk. After multiple calls and messages with no answer, I was getting discouraged. My son was tired and began to cry. I was tired because of a sleepless night that all mums go through-when their kids are teething. When he went into full-on crying, I felt the tears come down my face, too.
An employee at the store tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to come with her. I was panicked for a moment, thinking that I was going to be scolded and thrown into the storage area to keep us quiet. The employee, whose name I would later find out was Kelly, took me, to my surprise, to the Starbucks cafe that was inside the store. She asked me if I drank coffee. When I said yes, she walked over to the counter and came back with one for me. She said that it looked like I was having one of those days and that, as a mum, she had them, too. I told her how stupid I felt locking my keys in the car, and she assured me it happened to a lot of people. As we talked, my son settled into a sound sleep in my arms.

    10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Derek and Sophie’s daughter was born, they understood that they would need a car. Before, Sophie would walk her kids to school, and Derek would take a bus to his workplace, but with a newborn, Sophie couldn’t manage everything alone.
They bought a used car after a year of saving. The car was old, and had old leather (皮革) seats with holes in them. Sophie decided to clean the car before they started using it. As she lifted the front seat, she discovered a letter hidden under it. She stopped and began reading it.
“Hi! Thanks for buying this car. I know you might find it stupid, but please call it Julia. My daughter Emma had given it the name Julia,” the letter began.
“I had three kids, and we used to travel together with Julia. We lived happily until one day when everything changed. My children and I were driving home from school when we met with a terrible accident (车祸).
“I repaired Julia as a memento (纪念品) of my children and the happy times we shared. However, over time, I realized that it would be better to sell it because I couldn’t stop crying every time I looked at it. I have looked after it for 30 years, and now it’s your turn. I may not be alive when you read this letter. Please take good care of Julia. Love, Marla Arnolds.”
Sophie’s eyes welled up as she finished reading the letter. She could imagine the pain Marla must have felt as a mother, as she had lost her first child.
She decided to help the lady if she was still alive. She said to Derek, “Don’t you think we should help her? I mean, she must be old and lonely. I feel terrible for her.”
“I understand, Sophie. If you want to do it, let’s give it a try. Let’s ask the police about it, okay?”
“Alright! I hope the lady is safe and alive.”
Sophie asked the police to help find Marla Arnolds. After a week, Sophie received a call from the police telling her that they had finally found Mrs. Arnolds.

    1.One possible version:
My heart turned cold. “I don’t have fifteen dollars.” I took the photo envelope and walked away, with my cheeks red after my reply. Next, we stopped at the ride-on toy cars in the mall’s food court. There weren’t any other kids there. My kids climbed on them enjoying themselves very much. After a while, we were tired so we unwrapped our lunches that I had brought from home. Although the mall’s food court was near, I didn’t have extra money. It was early for lunch, but we were hungry.
As we were hawing our lunch, the young woman came up and pressed something into my hand. She said, “Here. Take your family out for ice cream after lunch.” I was surprised. I managed to say “thank you” as she turned and walked away. Then I looked down at what she had given me. The bills totaled fifteen dollars. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I quietly finished my sandwich. The doubts in my heart melted away and my faith was renewed. Kindness can change someone’s dark moment into a bright one.

Then Janey called the police on the telephone. She informed the police of where the taxi was heading and the doubtful piece of glass she had just found. “It’s exactly from the broken vase in the art gallery, I bet.” The policemen set off in no time. Having heard the plan, Bernard’s blue eyes turned watery with happiness and gratitude.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. Every afternoon after school, Bernard went to the Meredith family picking the bagged-popcorn and went to the town theatre, and he would always put a sign beside him saying , “Home is sweet, mine is bitter with a sick dad and a nursing mom...”Almost all film-goers bought Bernard’s popcorn when passing by, ——Bernard made 8 to 11 dollars each night. With this, Bernard could go home with medicine for his father. Months later his father could leave his sick-bed and walk around. Bernard’s sign was rewritten as followed: “Home is sweet, mine is too, thank you all.”

I don’t know who did this. Whatever the reason was, I decided to call the police and asked them to help me find out the truth. As I was taking a photo of the damage for a police report, a young man approached me. He introduced himself as the relatively new neighbor, and offered sympathy for the damage. He said he would help me as much as possible. I thought he was just talking and didn’t take it to heart.
The next evening as I ate my dinner, I heard a noise outside. When I walked into the yard, I realized the sounds came from my property. As I walked closer, I saw the neighbor I met yesterday repairing my fence. There were still warm-hearted people who loved our community and reached out to a stranger in my time of need. Sometimes, when the fence falls down, there is a bridge of communication. Suddenly, I felt there was a warm current in the cold early spring.

He proudly pulled the bandage off to show me the result of ‘his work.’ “See,” he said, “It’s growing back really good!”
