Poor Jack lost his sight at the age of six after a car accident. He was cornered in his dark world. An already terrible life now looked completely hopeless. His mother tried to encourage him, but nothing she said could help him at all.
Later Jack did nothing but lie in bed, sighing all day. His mother felt miserable, telling him to live with his disability, work hard and change his life on his own. She said, “Son, since you have lost your sight and nothing can change that, you have to accept it. There are things you can’t do. But there are lots of things you can do. You have a creative mind. Find something you enjoy and stick with it, no matter what.”
The future didn’t seem too bright for a blind child from the countryside. But as this young boy thought about his mother’s words, about what he really wanted to do with his life, he dreamed of becoming a star. So as a child, he would practice playing the piano and singing each day from then on.
Once one of his classmates heard him practicing at school and told him, “You can’t play the piano, and you can’t sing either. These things are meaningless for you. You are doomed to be a loser.”

2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was eight o'clock on a May morning, and Micah, my 17-year-old daughter, was already in our spare room upstairs. It had been her temporary eleventh-grade classroom ever since schools had moved to remote learning due to the pandemic.
From the kitchen, I listened for the sound of her tapping on her laptop or her talking with her classmates in their discussion sessions. We’d barely left the house for 10 weeks straight.
“Mom, everyone is hanging out today!” Micah’s voice echoed from upstairs. “Why can’t I?” I stepped up the stairs. Micah was lying on the floor wearing her pajamas, her laptop, school iPad and cellphone in front of her.
“It’s not fair,” she said.“ I have no one I can be with. I can ‘t wait until I’m 18 and can do what I want.”
We’d had this conversation before. Still, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. I was sick of being alone too. Even though Micah and I were home together more than we had been in years, we might as well have been living in separate worlds.
“Wanna watch videos later?” I asked. “Bake some cookies?”
“No, thanks.” Micah shook her head, as if the idea of doing something together was impossible.
I closed the door. I was used to Micah’s rejection, but it still made me upset. Teenage independence is healthy, but I worried if I didn’t find a way to bond with my girl soon, I might never be close to her again. She’d be 18 in the fall and had already convinced herself she didn’t need me anymore. Maybe she was right. No matter what I did, I couldn’t seem to reach her.
That evening, I logged onto a social app and saw a friend’s children playing with their new kitten. My mind went back to when I was in high school and our family moved. It was hard making friends. Mom surprised me with an eight-week-old gray kitten that I named Miss Muffet. Having a kitten to love and train brightened my days and got me through that difficult, lonely time. Maybe Micah would like a kitten.

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Flora and her dad were going to move. This Friday, a truck would come for the furniture. Then the next week, the workers would dig up the yard where Flora and her dad had grown flowers and change it into a parking lot.
"Our poor flowers," Flora murmured, looking at the bright purple blooms. She sat outside, selling things she didn't want to take to the new house. Beside her hung a sign that said Yard Sale. Her yard sale was the first one of the year on Apple Street, and several of her neighbors came over to have a look.
Her dad came out with a dish piled high with nuts. "Here's a snack for everyone," he said. He loved sharing things. Most of all, he loved sharing jokes. He smiled when he saw Flora's sign and blinked (眨眼) at the customers around her.
"Got problems with your selling? You seem to be unhappy," he asked. He surely knew the real reason why she was upset.
"Little Flora is trying to sell her stuff out, " joked Mrs. Ciro. "Or is she worrying about her flowers? "
"How much for the weed by your sign?" asked Quincy Johnson, smiling widely.
Flora frowned. She didn't think their jokes were funny. The yard was already sold and soon their poor flowers would be destroyed. The new house didn't have any flowers at all.
With a sigh, Flora dug her heels (鞋后跟) deep into the grass.

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom where there lived a king who only had one leg and one eye. But his skill, intelligence and generosity made him a competent ruler. As a result, the people in his kingdom lived a joyful and healthy life under his rule. Then, one day while the King was walking in his palace, he noticed the portraits(肖像) of his ancestors along the hallway. The paintings of his ancestors sparked(触发) a thought in the King’s mind. He thought that his children would walk the same hallway one day and remember all the ancestors through these portraits.
So the King sent an invitation to all the painters from across the kingdoms to his court. He announced that he wanted a beautiful portrait made of himself that would be placed in the palace. So any painter who wants to paint his picture should come forward. The painter will be rewarded based on how good the painting will turn out.
The painters started to panic and thought about making the King with only one leg and one eye look beautiful. How can his picture be beautiful? It is not possible. They were also scared that the King may get angry and punish them if the portrait did not turn out beautiful. So one by one, all the painters started to make excuses and politely declined to make a painting of the King.
But one young painter raised his hand and said that he would make a beautiful portrait of the King that the King would like. The King was finally happy hearing that at least one of the painters was interested in making his painting. The other painters got curious about how this young painter would make a beautiful painting of the King. The King excitedly permitted him, and the painter started drawing the portrait. He then filled the drawing with paints. Finally, after a long wait, he said that the picture was ready!

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my knight in shining armor.”
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?”
The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn around and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?
Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understood how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
Paragraph 1:
Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground.

Since the beginning of this school year, Josette Duran, coach of the local school girls’ volleyball team, has kept an unusual morning routine at the request of her son, Dylan.
Every day, she packs him a lunch of two sandwiches, two bags of chips, two drinks, and two servings of fruit. At first, Duran thought her son had perhaps hit another growth spurt (短时激增) and needed double the nutrition. She finally asked him if he was getting enough to eat and received a surprising answer about why Dylan needed the extra food. “There are some children lacking food at school. But it’s for Johnson alone. He only eats a fruit cup for lunch.”
It turned out that Dylan had befriended a classmate, Johnson, whose family was tightening their belts. Johnson’s single mother had recently lost her job and was very low on cash, so she could no longer afford to buy school lunches. After learning this, Duran was even more eager to help Johnson out and his mother because she herself could empathize (产生共鸣) with their situation. That hit home to her because a few years ago, she and her son were homeless.
Her mind wandered back to the miserable scene when she was living in her car and she was washing her son in bathrooms. And to make things worse, they didn’t have sufficient food. Now that they had overcome their hardship and were in a stable place, Duran wanted nothing more than to reach out and help others in need. She even left encouraging notes in the lunches for both boys.
Duran shared the incident in an inspiring Facebook post in which she talked about how proud she was of her son’s heart and how kind he was for doing that for another person. The efforts made by Duran who was by no means well off, got noticed by her players. A plan was under discussion to help their coach. Meanwhile, Johnson’s mother also learned of Duran’s generosity, and she called Duran up and offered to pay her back in person.

Many years ago, there lived a wealthy man in a big city who wanted to do something good. Raised in a small village, he made up his mind to help the people in his town. But before doing so, he wanted to do an experiment to find out who had the qualification for his help. So secretly he put a very large stone in the middle of the main road which led to the town. Then he stood behind a tree waiting and watching.
Several minutes later, an old man came along with his cow, “Who put the stone in the center of the road?” said the old man, but he didn’t try to move the stone away. He passed around the stone with some difficulties and continued on his way. Another man came along and did the same thing; then another came, and another. All of them complained about the stone in the center of the road but nobody tried to move it. Though the rich man was a little disappointed with what he had seen, he still chose to wait longer. In his heart, he wouldn’t like to believe that no one would do something with the stone. Therefore, he went on waiting and watching.
Later in the afternoon, a young man came along. He saw the stone and said, “It will be dark at night. Some people who will come along later in the dark are more likely to fall over the stone and get hurt.” Then the young man began to move the stone. Obviously, it was a big and heavy stone. In spite of this, he pushed and pulled and tried everything he could to move it out of the road. Finally, his hard work paid off. But to his surprise, under the stone, he found a bag full of money, along with a piece of paper reading, “This money is for the person who moves the stone from the road. The person deserves my help.”

8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I came back home, my mother was having a conversation with my seven-year-old daughter Jane. They were talking about how to fight against climate change in the holidays. I interrupted, saying we could do it by eating leftovers (剩菜) this holiday season. Mom and I both smiled.
I said, “You know Americans throw away 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, including things like plastic from old tech and gift wrap. Food waste, which accounts for 30 to 40 percent of year-round waste entering landfills (垃圾填埋场), also rises sharply during the holidays. During Thanksgiving week alone, Americans throw out roughly 200 million pounds of turkey meat, along with 30 million pounds of gravy (肉汁) and 14 million pounds of dinner rolls.”
Jane was puzzled at the figures of food waste but she was interested in the consequences. I told her, “When thrown-away food makes its way to landfills and rots, it produces methane, a kind of greenhouse gas. That’s not friendly. It can destroy the ecosystem, threatening the survival of animals, plants and humans on the planet.”
Jane was nervous and asked what we could do to help the earth. “One of the most powerful tools we have is just to directly decrease our own waste in our home,” my mom said. “It’s also really challenging because most of our waste is happening in different ways. But individual action can also play a huge role in dealing with food waste, particularly in the US.”
I remember that in my family, there are two traditions when it comes to holiday meals: there must be more food on the table than everyone can eat, and everyone must take home a plate of food at the end of the meal to make sure all the hard work that went into its preparation wasn’t wasted.

A Sepcial Christmas Gift
December 1st. Always on that day, Mom would softly announce, “It’s time.” When we heard those words, we all knew was time to write our letters to Santa. So, we began our special letters. Jimmy asked for a baseball. Wilbur like anything to do with art. This was my letter to Santa.
My Mom and Dad say I have been very good this year. I only want two toys this year. But what I want most is a dog. I have been asking for one all year. Mom and Dad say we can’t afford to feed an animal right now. It makes me sad, but it’s alright. Maybe next year Mom will say it’s OK. That’s all, Santa. Say hi to Mrs. Claus. And Merry Christmas.
Love, Sheila
The next morning we would walk three blocks to the large red, white and blue mailbox on the corner of Stimson and Forth. It was a special mailbox, only for letters children wrote to Santa.
Christmas Eve finally arrived. I was so excited that I found it difficult to fall asleep. But sleep finally came and so did Christmas morning. I woke up hearing my brothers down the hall shouting at my Mom and Dad. “Wake up! Wake up! Santa came! Come on! Come on!” Jimmy came running and jumping on my bed. “Santa’s been here! Come on! Let’s open presents!”
We all ran downstairs. Our eyes were shining like wildfire as we eyed over plenty of presents under the tree. Then Dad handed out the gifs one at a time. I kept watching as my brothers unwrapped gift after gift. Dad said, “This year you are going to be last to get your presents, because you are the oldest.” I didn’t think anything of it but nodded.

10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I’d seen Kim several times on the campus before. She was one of those girls who would shine wherever they went, while I was such a shy boy that I would be very happy to be left alone. At least, I thought so.
One night, there was a dancing party at the stadium, and I decided to get away from study for a moment. I arrived late and took a seat at the back of the room on purpose. My classmates, who sat near the stage, didn’t notice me. I told myself to hang out for just fifteen minutes and then go back to study.
Suddenly, I heard a laugh. Then I saw her. She was sitting among them. I moved my chair a little to the left, so I could have a better view of her. I imagined myself walking up to her and asking her to dance.
“What would she say? Would she just laugh or simply look right through me?” I wondered.
At that moment, she turned toward the back of the room-her eyes searching as if she’d felt my thoughts on her. My face became bright red when she saw me. I saw her whisper something to one of my classmates, and then she got up and came toward me.
For a moment, my heart began to race. It jumped so violently that I was sure she could see my shirt moving. I looked over my shoulder and saw the “Restroom” sign and decided to hide.
“Hey, Rob, what are you doing back here all by yourself?” she said, smiling as if we’d known each other all our lives.
I looked up, and she was standing right in front of me. I swallowed hard. She pulled out a chair and sat down at my table.
“How’d you know my name?” I finally managed to ask.
“I asked around,” she said with her dancing brown eyes. “I always make a point of knowing the names of all the smart guys on campus.”

1.Possible version:
That classmate’s comment was like a sharp knife, cutting Jack’s heart into pieces. For several days, he was in low spirits. “Should I give my dream up or stick to it?” he thought. All these days, his mother’s words lingered in his mind. “Nothing can get in the way of my dreams,” said the determined boy. From then on, he was determined to become a star and remained focused on his goal. Hard as it was, he was willing to accept the challenge and make more efforts. Finally his hard work paid off.
In his life, he received countless awards for his music. His excellent musical style has had a lasting effect on all forms of popular music in the past ten years. The people who had looked down upon him before felt extremely surprised. When asked how he made it, he owed it to his mother. It was his mother’s words that encouraged him in those confusing days. He wouldn’t listen to the negative words in his life and refused to stop. Determination and optimism are what it takes to overcome his weakness and accomplish his goal.

She only carried two pots of flowers inside. They would come along with the family to decorate the new house. Then Flora lined up the other pots near her sign. All the people were curious and nervous about how the painting would turn out. How will the portrait look beautiful with all the physical abnormalities of the King? What if the King doesn’t like the art and gets angry? They curiously waited for the big reveal. Finally, the painter uncovered the painting in front of the court. Everyone in the court, including the King, was left stunned, looking at the picture.
The young painter had made a portrait in which the King was sitting on the horse. He was on the one-leg side, holding his bow and aiming the arrow with his one eye closed. Indeed archery and horse riding were few of the skills the King possessed. Nevertheless, the King was delighted to see that the painter had made a beautiful portrait by creatively presenting the King’s abnormalities. The King adored the picture, and the painter received a very generous reward.

5.One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. Then he picked it up and tapped the father on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir, out of your pocket fell this bill.” The man turned around and saw the money. He stood silently for a second, feeling confused. But soon, he knew what was going on. Holding my dad’s hand in both of his hands and keeping a tight grip on the bill, his eyes lit up with gratitude. With his lips shaking and something shining in his eyes, he replied in a low voice, “Thank you, Sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
Paragraph 2:
That day I went back home with my father without any tickets, except a valuable lesson. Surely, the man wasn’t begging for a handout. However, it was a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation for a proud father who wished nothing but highlight his children’s life just with the circus! Dad stepped forward and offered his warm hands with respect. What my dad did show me that being wealthy is not just about money.

6.The next day, they met on the campus of Duran’s school. After she gave Duran a grateful and affectionate hug, Johnson’s mother took out an envelope containing the money she borrowed. Hardly had Duran caught sight of it when she shook her head, saying no in a determined way. “I don’t think I did anything special,” Duran explained sincerely. “I just think I did what a human being is supposed to do.” Actually, the kindness and sympathy didn’t stop there. Duran’s team raised $400 to give to her to cover the cost of all the extra lunches she had made out of her own pocket.
However, Duran refused to keep the money raised especially for her. Instead, she donated it to the cafeteria at her son’s school without a second thought. The money was enough to pay back the past due accounts of all her son’s poor fellow students who bought school lunch. “Now everyone can eat,” Duran said with a shining smile, proud that it all started with her 14-year-old son’s close observation of someone other than himself—someone he could give a helping hand to, using a packed lunch made with lots of love.

I asked my daughter whether she would spend a holiday without wasting food to fight against climate change.
Jane answered “Sure” and hoped to help Grandmother to prepare for dinners. My mom and I both smiled again. We worked out how many people would attend the party and how much food would be bought. Jane was happy to take part in the activities. I hope my mom’s method will help her realize the duty to do something for our earth. Fifteen minutes turned into a half hour, and an hour became two. We talked and laughed like old friends. There were people all around and a band playing somewhere in front of us, but we’d slipped into our own world — one where a new friendship was being born.
Paragraph 2:
Since then, I have changed. Whenever I am at a party, I am always on the lookout for the strangers who might feel a little out of place, a little left out. I can recognize myself in those shy souls, and then I think of Kim. What would she do in a situation like this? Then I will walk over and say hello warmly. I have found out it is not so difficult to reach out for a new friendship.
