    The Overturned Bin
“Char siu bao,” I pushed my cart (推车) around table after table of hungry customers. It was Saturday morning — the height of the brunch rush — and everyone in the neighborhood knew that Grandma Wu’s restaurant offered the freshest dim sum. Grandma’s Chinese dishes were so irresistible that customers were numerous.
After a while, my cart was empty and I took some of my favorite char siu bao at the tiny table in the alley (巷子) behind the restaurant. But just as I was about to take my first bite, I noticed something strange. Our garbage bins had been knocked over! Trash and half-eaten dim sum littered the ground.
Swallowing my bao, I quickly picked up the mess. Then I headed back inside to help with the rest of the rubbish. I forgot all about the mystery of the knocked-over bins until I took out the trash only to find the garbage bins had tipped over again!
Could it have been the wind? As I cleaned up for a second time, I looked at the darkening sky. A storm was heading our way, but the tree branches were not moving. Determined to avoid cleaning up a third time, I placed three stones on top of the bins.
I was met with another surprise early next morning. Looking out of my window for signs of the storm, I spotted the garbage bins — knocked over again! I complained as it started to rain. That’s when I noticed two yellow eyes staring back at me — it was a little gray cat!
“So you’re the one that keeps leaving messes!” I rushed to the alley, finally understanding. I watched as the cat tried to get the half-eaten bao inside. Cats aren’t supposed to eat bao. Garlic could be deadly to cats. But the cat was clearly too hungry to care.

I like staying overnight at my Gramma’s house — that is, until Gramma starts telling me how wonderful my cousin Maya is. Then it’s Maya this and Maya that until I don’t ever want to hear another word about her.
That’s why I wasn’t too excited when Gramma called me on the phone to “come on over and bring your pajamas.” When I got there, it was worse than I’d expected. There, in Grandpa’s big leather rocker, sat Maya, all dressed up and formal-looking and wearing fancy shoes as if she’d just been to a party.
“Surprise, Kristen!” Gramma said. “Your cousin Maya and her parents have traveled in from the East Coast on business. Maya gets to stay with us this afternoon. “Gramma chattered away about how excited she’d been for this surprise get-together, and how cousins ought to get to know each other better.
I hung my baseball cap in the closet and set my backpack by the stairway, all the time smiling and nodding as if I’d been waiting forever for this chance to spend an afternoon with Maya. Grandpa’s chair squawked (咯咯叫) as Maya rocked back and forth. It’s the chair I like best in the house, the one I usually sit in. I sat down on the sofa across from her.
Shortly, Gramma went off to the kitchen to “see about some lunch,” she’d said. That left me stuck in the living room with rocking Maya.
She was still small but taller than I’d remembered her from her last visit four years ago. She was good at small talk, though, and was chatting away about how nice it was to see me again. But I could tell that she didn’t really think so. The last time she was here, we’d had hours of fun together building caves out of Gramma’s sofa pillows.
After that, I’d heard about her only through Gramma’s tales. Maya taking piano lessons. Maya learning math. Maya, Maya, Maya. Now Maya was here, looking great with the latest haircut and a fancy dress.

I’ve always had a super skill for growing big fruit and vegetables, and my tomatoes, pumpkins (南瓜)and peppers regularly win prizes in Syracuse, Nebraska. The one thing I struggled with was pumpkins. For the first few years, I did not pay much attention to my pumpkins. But it wasn’t until I attended a pumpkin-growing meeting six years ago in Portland, Oregon that my interest developed into a favorite hobby.
I got talking to a woman called Charity who held the world record for the longest river journey by pumpkin boat. I’d never heard of anyone paddling(划桨)in a pumpkin before, but once the idea was in my head, I had to try it. Within a few weeks, Charity’s 15.09-mile record was beaten by a man who completed a 25.5-mile voyage. If there’s one thing I’ve never lacked, it’s optimism, and I decided that with the right pumpkin, I could do better.
I spent thousands of dollars on special pumpkin seeds. But the pumpkins that had won the river-paddling records were more than huge. This year I noticed one particular pumpkin. My wife called it Berta, and we watched with excitement over the next few weeks as Berta put on 12 to 15 pounds a day. I finally cut it off when it reached 846 pounds. It was a tough decision, but I wanted it to be big enough for me to fit inside. I had to test Berta on water. I lowered it into a pond to see how it was going to float, marked the water level and then cut it open.
On 27 August this year, right after my 60th birthday we set out early for the Missouri River with Berta tied to the back of a truck. I had a paddle and was wearing a lifejacket. Berta was eased into the river and I carefully climbed in. It was like sitting in a huge bottle every move I made caused Berta to tilt (倾斜), so I had to lean to get it back to keep balance.

“BEES ARE DYING!” Doodlebug Pinkley cried, thrusting his latest copy of World of the Weird at his sister Dandelion. His favorite magazine had a lot of strange but important content. This month it was insects in danger. The number of certain bugs, including bees, was falling sharply all over the world.
“It’s terrible!” Dandelion replied, after reading the article. They were sitting on the outdoor patio (露台) of Cool Yule’s Ice Cream Shop.
“Maybe we could make a bee roof garden, too — like in this article,” Doodlebug suggested. Yule recommended making it on the patio, adding a pollinator (传粉昆虫) garden up there would attract bees — and more customers. “Brilliant!” Everyone else responded in a chorus.
Now the problem was how to get the funds. Dandelion proposed raising money by setting up a booth near the shop’s entrance to alert people and ask them to donate. The plan was a go!
The next day their friends Bog, Tomiko and Izzy met Doodlebug and Dandelion inside Yule’s. Everyone was excited. They made handouts explaining how the garden would attract pollinators, do something to help prevent flooding, and improve the air.
“We should have a bee mascot (吉祥物),” Izzy suggested. Doodlebug recalled the old bee costume that his Mom wore for Halloween once. Over the enthusiastic uproar, Dandelion shouted, “And you’ll be the bee, Doodlebug!” “WILL NOT!” Doodlebug shot back. “Too big. We need to stuff some grownup into that costume.” But who, then? For ten mad minutes the kids debated loudly.
“Silence, you little noisy kids!” someone suddenly roared. “I’m trying to read about bees in danger!” The whole crew turned in shock. There sat Doodlebug’s horrible teacher, Mrs. Noodleknocker. Doodlebug had discovered long ago that she was a World of the Weird fan, but that didn’t make her any nicer. “Bees and butterflies need help!” Mrs. Noodleknocker cried. “But a person can’t even worry about them peacefully!”

    Up in Lights
For some, putting up Christmas lights is a holiday chore. But for the Pascucci family, it was always a big day of celebration.
Every year on the day after Thanksgiving, Sara’s father, Anthony Pascucci, 60, woke up excited to string lights and decorate the lawn of his home and didn’t take them down until February, being the only house with Christmas decorations in the community. Anthony Pascucci believed the brightness of the lights could counter (抵消) some of the darkness of the past year with COVID-19.
In 2020, as in every other year, Anthony Pascucci strung colorful lights all around their roof until it looked as if sparkles were dripping onto the hallway. Sara’s brother, Anthony Jr. helped with the wiring, while Sara hung ornaments (装饰物) on the tree inside the house playing the song “White Christmas” over and over to keep everyone in the spirit. The whole place looked like a scene from a pop-up Christmas storybook.
On Christmas Eve, the whole house twinkled with lights and gifts were piled under the tree. Everyone was looking forward to overly stuffed clams-a typical Italian feast. But most of all, they looked forward to enjoying another Christmas together as a family.
However, Sara received a call from her colleague who had tested positive for COVID-19. Though Sara didn’t have any symptoms she decided to get tested right away, as well as the whole family. When their results came back they all learned that they also had COVID-19. Several weeks later on early February, Anthony Pascucci passed away after getting lung infections.
In addition to helping to plan the funeral for her father, Sara had to tackle a seemingly endless list of difficult to-dos. It was almost too much to bear.

“Jane! Look who I brought home!” My father stuck his head out from behind the door, flashing a big smile. My heart skipped a beat as I mouthed, “A dog?” Nodding, my father pushed the door open, revealing a large German Shepherd. I grasped my hands tightly over my mouth and failed to hold back a sharp scream. Rushing back into my room, I locked the door and covered the gap between it and the floor with tape. I had a strong fear and great hate of dogs ever since I was bitten by one badly on the face, leaving a huge and deep scar(伤疤). I decided to stay in my room until the dog had gone for a walk with my father.
After what seemed like ages, I heard the door open and shut. “Finally! I can get out of here,” I thought. Out of great joy, I threw open the door and punched(用拳猛击) the air. At that moment, I felt something wet touching my foot. To my shock, it was the dog! I stood there, scared and shocked as if my feet were rooted to the ground. When I regained my calmness, I shouted loudly, “Ahhh! It is the dog! Help! He wants to bite me! Get him away from me!”
My father was standing at the door, folding his arms and laughing quietly. “He is not going to eat you! Jane, don’t be so scared. Go on! Touch him!” he said. Attempting to show my unwillingness, I failed to do so due to my constant and uncontrollable shaking. Instead, I shouted loudly, “Never! I will never touch that dirty thing! Go away!” I picked up a tennis ball on the table and aimed at the dog but missed, causing the ball to roll across the living room.

It was a morning in late August. Down the shore (岸) line of a lake, my father was fishing by a bank of trees. He liked to fish, away from distractions and noise and other people. He was also a wildlife officer, traveling all over the province to protect nature from humans.
But I was still new to fishing. “Dad, where should I stay?” He simply pressed his index finger to his lips, pointed to a shady spot by a large rock and shook his head gently. I knew he wanted me to be quiet.
The place where we were fishing was near a protected wetland. Songbirds, ducks and Canada geese flew by, touching down briefly on the water’s surface before they flapped their wings and flew back into the sky. White clouds passed in front of the sun, blocking its warming rays from time to time.
Out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of a few big loons (潜鸟) gathered together near the shoreline. What were they doing there? Loons usually travel alone, but here were five. Maybe it was a family? One loon, wailing (哀号), swam away from the group, toward me.
    “Dad? Come here!”
My dad turned a bit toward me but didn’t move, until I urged him again.
“Look at that loon. It’s swimming toward us,” I said, pointing toward that strange loon.
Just then, the loon let out a big laughing sound. It stopped in the water near shore, not ten feet away from us. It was so close that we could see its beady red eyes. Strangely, the bird’s wings were held tight against its black -and-white body, its neck wrapped (缠绕) around by a thin line. Fishing line maybe? Was there a hook (钩子) on the line, too?
“It needs help. It’s trying to get our attention!” With these words, my dad was ready to get into the water. “But... Look at its long beak (喙)! It could easily hurt us with it.” I didn’t follow him.

“Dad, are you sure there will be a bar of chocolate?” I asked, lining up with Dad and Uncle John near the back of many runners in Los Angeles. My first marathon. It was pouring rain, my legs were cold, and I was wishing I hadn’t been too nervous to eat a bigger breakfast.
“There were tables of chocolate bars every mile at my last marathon,” Dad said.
Suddenly everyone around us started moving. Way up ahead I saw smoke from the cannon (手枪). Our marathon started.
“You go on ahead,” Dad said, panting. “I’ll see you at the end.”
Uncle John and I zigzagged through the runners. Soon Dad was way behind. We reached mile 5, but I still hadn’t seen a chocolate bar anywhere. Instead, the streets were lined with fast-food places. I smelled the food as I ran — doughnuts, hamburgers, fries.
By mile 8, I was starving. How I wished I’d eaten six pieces of toast, eggs, bacon, ... It was raining so hard. My hands stung from the cold.
On the balconies people yelled and waved to us. At mile 10, I took a power gel (能量胶) out of my pocket and tried to open it, but my hands were so cold as if they had been frozen into fists. When I rounded the corner, I saw my aunt and my little brother cheering for us. I wanted to stop and talk, but I couldn’t get out of the flow of runners. The road ahead was yellow. Thousands of banana skins everywhere. Food at last! I grabbed a banana and wolfed it down.
Mile 15. I looked down at my feet and watched them run across the stars. There were tables full of power gels. I took one and tore it open. My hands had come unfrozen. I squeezed the packet and filled my mouth with sweet stuff. Chocolate would taste better.

    9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Jordi! Wake up!” Father’s voice called from the hallway, and I sat up quickly. The day finally came! The day that I would be a castellar—a tower builder. Mama had breakfast ready. “Are you prepared for your moment of fame?” Papa asked in excitement. My throat was suddenly very dry, and the bread got stuck as I swallowed. Taking a big swig of juice, I put on a smile. “I'm ready” I would do well. I wanted to make him proud.
Here in the eastern part of Spain, casteller groups were very popular. My city hosted the competition this year. Before that, I’d watched my parents compete. But never before had I been part of the tower. It was so high. And it sometimes fell. I was hesitant to be up there. But for the past year, I had been practicing the climb. I was twelve, and I must not be a coward (胆小鬼). So for the first time in a competition, I would help build the tower!
In town, I saw that the center was packed with people and casteller teams from all over the country. Hands sweating, I was waiting for our turn to compete. Mom came and patted me on the shoulder. “Have focus. Have faith.” I nodded to show that I understood and would do my best to follow the suggestions.
Soon, too soon, it was our turn.
My father and three of the strongest men stood in a circle facing each other as they held tightly to each other’s arms. Four more strong men stepped behind, each wrapping his arms around the chest of a man and giving him a bear hug. Then fifty more men and women crowded behind and began pushing on their backs to keep them tightly together.
Our base was solid. Four smaller men climbed onto the backs of the base group and stood on their shoulders. They then grabbed onto each other’s arms and held firmly, creating a strong second tier (层). Another group of men would form the third tier. Then, a group of women, including Mom, started climbing and began to form the fourth tier. Our tower was growing taller and taller.

Jenny was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her deskmate, Rose, however, was not in the cool kids’ group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Rose, Rose, long as spaghetti (意大利面)”. Every time Rose heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!
Jenny didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Rose, Rose, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Jenny went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Jenny noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it?” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking (啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Jenny let out a sigh as she scooped the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Rose, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Jenny told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly.
“It’s fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around the garden, and...” Everyone was entertained by Jenny’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter lingering around the classroom.

    1.One possible version:
    Paragraph 1:
I took a cautious step toward him when there was suddenly a loud thunder above us. The storm began. The frightened cat dived back into the garbage bin. With the rain picking up, the poor kitty was too scared to come out of his new hiding spot. Luckily, I had an idea. Having grabbed a can of cat food, I went to the kitchen where Grandma was preparing for the day’s opening. “May I take that?” I asked, pointing to a plate full of fresh char siu bao. “Help yourself,” Grandma said, and I beaded back outside with it.
    Paragraph 2:
Like all of Grandma’s customers, the cat cheered up at the scent (气) of the warm char siu bao. I slowly made my way to the garage. Sure enough, the cat followed me inside, happy to be out of the rain. “You can’t eat these bao, but I have something better for you,” I said, pouring some cat food into a bowl. It wasn’t long before Grandma appeared in the doorway. “Grandma, meet my new friend. He loves the smell of your cooking,” I said. Grandma chuckled, “Well, it looks like I’ll need to expand our menu to include some cat-friendly dim sum options.”

    2.One possible version:
Glancing down at my jeans and my old sneakers, I wished I hadn’t come. A rush of shame flooded over me as I compared myself to Maya-Gramma’s favorite. She was smarter, prettier, and more talented than I could ever hope to be. The thought of being loved less by Gramma because of Maya was unbearable. “I hear you like to skate,” Maya’s words crashed through my thoughts. What she announced was totally beyond my expectation. Astonished and speechless, I wondered how she knew about my skating. “I hear you are the captain of your basketball team. Even better, you are always competitive and aggressive in any sports activities,” she exclaimed, her eyes full of envy and admiration.
“How do you know all these things about me?” I asked Shrugging and looking down, Maya told me that my Gramma wrote about me in her letters and that I was her favorite person to write about. Numb with shock, I stared at Maya’s face, and the only thing that came to my mind was, “You won the first prize in the math competition, didn’t you?” Maya looked up, confused. I explained that my Gramma talked about her all the time. We laughed, chatted about everything, and had fun building caves out of Gramma’s sofa pillows. Time flew by, and as Maya and her parents drove off, Gramma and I waved goodbye until they were out of sight. “Isn’t Maya a lovely child!” Gramma grinned. “She’s really nice,” I agreed, now understanding that Gramma had two favorites.

Much of the trip passed safely, but there were occasional troubles and many curious onlookers. Much of the trip passed safely, but there were occasional troubles and many curious onlookers. Some people laughed or shouted words of encouragement, while others just stared in disbelief. The wind was a major challenge, blowing me off course and making it hard to maintain a steady pace. Even in the face of great difficulties, I still don't think I can't give up; I must stick to it to achieve success.
But I was determined to set a new record. After what felt like an eternity, I finally reached the finish line, completing a 38-mile journey down the Missouri River. I was exhausted but thrilled to have set a new world record for the longest river journey by pumpkin boat. It felt incredible to have achieved my goal and proven that anything is possible with determination, hard work, and a little bit of imagination.

    4. “THE BEE!” he exclaimed and pointed at Mrs. Noodleknocker, only to be greeted with a glare. Dandelion detailed their plan and asked her to be the bee mascot. After digesting the information, Mrs. Noodleknockerher had her irritable expression softened a bit. “Just forget it,” she said, turning back to her magazine. “Only real bees matter.” Tomiko responded boldly that this whole plan was indeed for real bees. “Please, lady?” Bog coaxed, adding her favor might double the fund. Mrs. Noodleknocker put down the magazine, a tiny smile glinting across her usually mean mouth. It had been a long time since anyone called her a lady. Finally, she snorted and gave in.
The bee campaign was a massive success! On the day of fundraising, Mrs. Noodleknocker rocked the bee costume in all her pollinator glory. Instead of threatening passers-by with a sting, the group decided a friendly bee was the right way to go. The following hours witnessed the bee buzzing around the booth, arms and legs punching and kicking. Whenever her strange insect eyes landed on someone, the victim quickly forked over cash — even without being stung. So hilarious and inspiring! A few weeks later Cool Yule’s bee garden bloomed spectacularly, attracting customers and good insects from all around. And Mrs. Noodleknocker was almost a nice person from then on. It proved that being a bee could be good for anyone.

6.The dog barked excitedly before running across the room to fetch the ball and bring it back to me. I was about to open my mouth to say “So cute”, but I resisted the urge and shouted, “Stupid dog! That is my favourite tennis ball and you just covered it with your mouth liquid! You stupid dog!” Unfortunately, the look on my face sold me out. I was laughing, my eyes lit up and I started to pet the dog. He was just so cute and lovable, and began to lie on his stomach beside my feet, enjoying my touch with his eyes slightly closed.
The following day, gathering my courage, I decided to follow my father when he took the dog out for a walk. Filled with joy and enthusiasm, I opened the gate. Just as I put one foot outside the gate, suddenly, deep barks sounded from up ahead. At the sight of several dogs wondering there, I stopped with my legs trembling! All at once, my dog violently barked back, causing the dogs to flee away. I regained my calmness, smiled and praised my dog. We three walked on, breathing the sweet air. From that day on, I overcame my problem—my fear of dogs.

7.“Go get the scissors from the tool box,” my dad was shouting. I ran, as quickly as possible, and came back with the tiny pair of scissors we used for cutting off the end of fishing line. I saw the loon already in Dad’s hands. “What should I do next?” I asked, daring not to get close. “I’ll hold it firmly, and you just need to cut off the line.” The loon’s long beak was so close to me that I felt it might hurt me with its beak at any moment. I held the scissors out at arm’s length, my hands shaking.
“Take it easy! The bird won’t hurt you!” encouraged Dad. Somehow his calm voice gave me strength. I took a deep breath, trying to calm down a bit. As I approached, the loon was silent and still. Carefully and slowly, I cut off the fishing line from around the loon’s neck. “Now, take out that hook. Hurry!” As I tried to pull the hook out, the loon struggled in Dad’s hands, as if it were trying to pull itself free. “No! Not that way! You’re hurting it.” So I had to try again. As I finally get the sharp hook out of its body, I let out a sigh of relief. I patted the loon’s head, a gesture of gratitude that it hadn’t used its beak as a weapon. As I watched that loon lapping its wings and flying back into the sky, I couldn’t help beaming a smile.

Along the way, older people ran past me, and yelled, “Don’t give up.” which, hardened my heart. I couldn’t help thinking, if they could do it, so could I. 9.Then suddenly it was kids’ turn to make the last tier. Tightly gripping the clothing of those we were climbing over, we passed the first two tiers without difficulty. By the time I reached the fourth tier, nerves made my hands sweat and my knees tremble, for I was very high off the ground. As I climbed onto my mother’s shoulders, my foot slipped off and I slid down. Instinctively, I clutched Mom’s arm with all my might. Feeling the tower below swaying a bit, my heart began a crazy dance in my chest. “Stay focus!” Exclaimed a kid beside me. Sweat trickling down my face, I took a deep breath to calm myself. I could not be responsible for ruining our tower. I could not disgrace my parents or myself. I could not let my team down.
“Jordi. Easy!” My mother whispered the words. I calmed my heart and again placed my foot on Mom’s lap. This time, I grasped her shirt and firmly pushed myself to a stand, balancing on one foot. With the other foot, I stepped up and onto her shoulders, and then brought the other foot up. Reaching deep inside to feel my balance, with focus and trust, I rose slowly out of my crouch and straightened my knees. I worked hard to hold myself straight and still until our tower was complete. Whether or not we won this competition, I knew we had done what we had set out to do. With faith in each other and with focus on the task, we built our tower. Eventually, I became a casteller!

    Possible version:
Then Jenny spotted Rose sitting by herself in a corner. She kept her head down with her eyes fixed on the floor as usual. It hit Jenny that the pecking order worked in school, too. Rose was just like the poor little chicken, being teased and ignored by her classmates, merely due to her special height. “It’s time for me to make an apology to Rose.” Jenny thought to herself. No sooner had she made up her mind than she announced it to the cool kids surrounding her. Astonished at what she said, all the kids burst out screaming, “Talking to the long spaghetti? Are you crazy?”
But Jenny walked directly toward Rose, regardless of what they said. “Hi, Rose. I’m sorry about the spaghetti thing.”Jenny murmured an apology, her face reddening. “I know it hurts you. Can you forgive us?” She figured Rose might just walk away. But she lifted her misty eyes and nodded yes. Jenny wiped away her tears, giving her a warm hug. Moved by the scene, the other kids also came to offer their sincere apologies to Rose. From that day on, no one made up silly chants about Rose, and Jenny also gained an important life lesson that everyone should be treated equally no matter how special he or she was.
