The arts, especially music, should be part of every school’s lessons at every grade level. Students would be much smarter if they had some musical experience. They could improve their classroom skills, like paying attention and following directions. People develop all these skills when they learn music. Making music also lets children use their imagination. It provides students with a chance to try out their own ideas.
Music not only makes children better students, but also gives them something positive (积极的) to do. In a music program, children can be part of a band. Parents can enjoy listening to their children’s music instead of seeing them glued to a computer or TV screen. In a school band, students get to be part of a team. They can get along well with old friends and make new friends through music.
Music builds self-confidence, too. It gives children a sense of achievement and success. Making music is something for them to be proud of, and it lets kids practice performing in front of audiences. Music gives children an opportunity for self-ex pression, and that helps develop their self-confidence. Once again, music is important because it can make children better students, give them something positive to do, and build their characters. That is why music should be offered in every single grade in every school.
1.How could music make students smarter?
A.By improving their memory and attention.
B.By improving their classroom skills and imagination.
C.By making them brave, knowledgeable and modest.
D.By learning music, making music and trying out their own ideas.
2.What does the underlined phrase “glued to” in the second paragraph mean?
A.Unwilling to turn on. B.Always turning off. C.Unwilling to leave. D.Always hating.
3.What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.Music brings children success. B.Music gives children self-expression.
C.Music helps children achieve their dream. D.Music develops children’s self-confidence.
4.What’s the best title of the text?
    A.Music Is a Must as a Course at School B.Music Builds Children’s Self-confidence
C.Music Makes Students Much Smarter D.Learning Music Is Very Important

Native people in the Amazon may have been creating fertile soil for farming for thousands of years. And what they learned could offer lessons for people concerned about climate change today.
The Amazon River basin covers much of central South America, across which are archaeological sites where ancient people left their mark on the land. And patches(小块) of strangely fertile soil dot the landscape at many of these sites. It’s darker in color than surrounding soils and richer in carbon.
The industrial world has long viewed the Amazon as a vast wilderness — one that was mostly untouched before Europeans showed up. One reason for this idea was that the soil there is nutrient-poor. But a large number of ancient finds in recent decades has been turning that idea on its head. Plenty of evidence now shows that people were shaping the Amazon for thousands of years before Europeans arrived. Ancient city centers have been found in modern-day Bolivia, for instance.
To find out more, Perron, an Earth scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, became part of a team that reviewed interviews with Kuikuro people, who reported making dark Earth using ash, food scraps and controlled burns. They call the product eegepe.
The researchers also collected soil samples and found that there were “striking similarities” between dark Earth samples from ancient and modern sites. Both were far less acidic than the soils around them and also contained more plant-friendly nutrients.
The soil samples also revealed that on average, dark Earth holds twice as much carbon as the soil around it. Infrared(红外线的) scans in one Brazil region suggest the area holds many pockets of this dark Earth, which may store up to about 9 million tons of carbon that scientists have overlooked, Perron’s team says. That’s about as much carbon as a small, developed country emits per year.
‘Figuring out the true amount will require more data,’ says Antoinette Winkler Prins, a geographer working at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. Still, ‘the new research could offer insights into the Amazon’s past and future.’
5.What was previously believed about the Amazon River basin?
A.It was a vast wilderness untouched by humans.

Many kinds of turtles (海龟) found in the Philippines are endangered. But now, the turtles have one less threat. Many people who used to collect their eggs to eat or to sell are now working to keep turtles safe.
Those people are called poachers (偷猎者). Now, however, protection organizations are teaching former poachers how to safely collect the eggs and protect them before they hatch (孵化). The people who do this are paid about 37 cents per egg. That is four times more than they would earn from selling them illegally.
One of the former poachers is Johnny Manlugay. “I’ve learned to love this work,” he said, adding that he did not know it was illegal to eat turtle eggs and their meat. He now collects the eggs carefully and brings them to a group called Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions (CURMA), which takes the eggs and puts them under the sand in a safe place. When the baby turtles hatch, they are directed to the water.
The turtles are called “pawikan” in the local language. They are at risk not only from poachers, but also climate change and habitat loss.
Carlos Tamayo is one of CURMA’s leaders. “We talked to the poachers, and it turned out poaching was just another means for them to earn a living,” he said. “They had no choice.”
Cabagbag is over 40 years old. His wife and seven-year-old son sometimes help him collect turtle eggs. Since October, they have taken over 1,000 eggs to CURMA.Cabagbag said that once he received training and learned that the turtles were endangered, he stopped poaching.
When the baby turtles hatch, many visitors come to watch them run down the beach and into the water. Cabagbag said seeing the turtles get safely into the water brings him a feeling of joy.
9.What is one of the ways of the organizations to protect turtles?
A.Teaching former poachers to collect and protect turtle eggs.
B.Getting the locals to receive more education.

Official figures show that 101 people were killed in road accidents on the streets of London last year. The city wants to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on the capital’s roads to zero. It seems impossible. But it focuses more minds on an important question: What can help reduce accidents in a big city? Transport for London (TfL), the capital’s road and rail authority, has some answers: safe speeds, safe vehicles and so on.
A safety standard for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs), which harnesses blind area cameras and sensors (传感器), is pioneering. Blind area cameras and sensors are widely placed where they are needed. The European Commission has followed it. TfL has also helpfully identified London’s most dangerous places. Half of Britain’s most dangerous roads run through the capital. Around three-quarters of accidents that cause deaths or serious injuries happen at crossing near the British Museum, which has been the site of the most deaths since 2012. Westminster is the most dangerous area for walkers and cyclists, so it introduced 20 mph speed limits on all its roads in 2021.
“Vision Zero” was launched in 2018. Deaths and serious injuries on London’s roads have fallen — by 53% and 40% respectively in 2022. But movement is not one-way. Deaths were record breakingly low in 2020 and 2021. But in 2022 the deaths rose again. “We are moving in the right direction,” says Will Norman, London’s walking and cycling commissioner.
Lack of funds for TfL has put off improving the riskiest areas. Only a few parts of the1010 Avenue have bike paths with guardrails (护栏). Safety is the biggest problem to people taking up cycling or letting their children walk or cycle. But greener vehicles may be unsafe themselves. Electric scooters (滑板车) are the latest ones to confuse planners. “One of those doing 50 mph down the road is not good for anybody,” said Mr Norman.

B.Children should think twice when taking up cycling.
C.Safety has been a problem for some eco-friendly vehicles.
D.Electric scooters have become the biggest confusion for planners.

When I was young, a friend and I came up with a “big” plan to make reading easy. The idea was to boil down great books to a sentence each. “Moby-Dick” by American writer Herman Melville, for instance, was reduced to: “A whale of a tale about the one that got away.” As it turned out, the joke was on us. How could a single sentence convey the essence of a masterpiece with over five hundred pages?
Blinkist, a website and an app, now summarizes nonfiction titles in the form of quick takes labeled “blinks”. The end result is more than one sentence, but not by much. Sarah Bakewell’s “At the Existentialist Café” is broken into 11 screens of information; Michelle Obama’s “Becoming” fills 13.
Blinkist has been around since 2012. It calls its summaries “15-minute discoveries” to indicate how long it takes to read a Blinkist summary. “Almost none of us,” the editors assure us, “have the time to read everything we’d like to read.”
But I think a book is something we ought to live with, rather than speed through and categorize. It offers an experience as real as any other. The point of reading a book is not accumulating information, or at least not that alone. The most essential aspect is the communication between writer and reader. The idea behind Blinkist, however, is the opposite: Reading can be, should be, measured by the efficient uptake of key ideas.
No, no, no. What’s best about reading books is its inefficiency. When reading a book, we need to dive in, let it take over us, demand something of us, teach us what it can. Blinkist is instead a service that changes books for people who don’t, in fact, want to read. A 15-minute summary misses the point of reading; speed-reading with the app isn’t reading at all.
20.What does the underlined part “the joke was on us” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.We were actually joking. B.We were laughed at by others.
C.We laugh at others. D.We were just embarrassing ourselves.
    21.What is Blinkist?
A.an app that can summarize a book B.a robot who can read
C.a person who loves reading D.a website that can search books
22.What is an ideal form of reading according to the author?
A.Obtaining key ideas efficiently. B.Deeply involving ourselves in books.
C.Accumulating information quickly. D.Further confirming our beliefs.
23.What is the author’s attitude to Blinkist?
    A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Neutral. D.Negative.

If you are studying at a university in the US, there is no need to decide your major in the first year, but it’s a good idea to spend time early on working out what subjects you are interested in.

If you are planning a trip, you may be wondering what might be in your line of travel when it comes to unique buildings. There are some unusual, unique buildings you should put on your travel bucket list.
Capital Gate-Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Capital Gate is one of the tallest buildings in Abu Dhabi. According to the Guinness World Records, Capital Gate is the world’s farthest leaning, man-made tower. The structure leans at an 18 degree angle, and intentionally so. This is a lean about 5 times greater than the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
    Svalbard Global Seed Vault-Longyearbyen, Norway
Nothing grand or stunning about this structure, from a visual perspective. But, in some way, the future of civilization may depend on the work done at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is designed to store millions of different types of seeds for the replanting of various crops in the event of any number of major global disasters. The building comes complete with blast-proof doors, airlocks, and motion sensors.
    Palace of the Parliament-Bucharest, Romania
The Palace of the Parliament is the second largest administrative building on the planet. Indeed, it is so big that it can be seen from space. The structure was commissioned by the last communist dictator to rule in Romania. A fraction of the building is in use today, most of it sitting idle.
    Lotus Temple-Delhi, India
If in India, a visitor interested in building and architecture should also check out the Lotus Temple in Delhi. The Lotus Temple is indeed designed to mimic the appearance of the flower. The Lotus Temple is a Bahai house of worship completed in 1986.

To much of the world, bullfighting has always been distinctly Iberian. But these days, parts of France are laying claim to this tradition. From the Cte Basque to the arenas of Arles and Beziers, it has spread to towns where bullfighting has long been banned, and been embraced with such enthusiasm you’d think the sport had been born there.
The rising passion for blood and sand has been resisted by animal-rights activists. Last month someone set off a bomb near the bullring in Carcassonne. Yet France’s enthusiasts fiercely defend their right to these moral rituals. Bullfighting, they insist, is part of the heritage, an expression of a shared regional culture that should be protected.
The rest of the Continent should take note. The paradox (自相矛盾) of an ever-more-united Europe is that as borders between member states become less important, so do the nations themselves-and regional identities are valued. It’s easy to forget that most European nation-states were created as we know them only during the 19th century, after a long series of bloody conflicts. “If the chances of war had been a little different, all the regions sharing bullfight might have been together,” argues Jean Michel Mariou, a huge fan of bullfighting. On both sides of the Pyrenees there are Basques, there are Catalans, there are common cultures, he says. “Bullfighting is only one expression of it.”
Bullfighting isn’t the only cultural tradition that has begun to go beyond borders, of course. To name but one other: the Celtic revival, built largely around musical groups along the coast of Ireland, Scotland and Cornwall, Brittany and Normandy. But while bagpipes (风笛) may stir the blood, they don’t spill it. And the violence of bullfighting horrifies many people who don’t feel they share in its culture.
“The concept of lasting local tradition doesn’t mean anything anymore,” says Josyane Wuerelle, coordinator of the Federation de Liasions Anti-Corrida in Agde. Bullfighting is about attracting tourists, not honoring local history, she argues. Robert Marge doesn’t see it that way, of course. He recently declined an invitation to organize a bullfighting in Paris’s enormous Stade de France. “We didn’t want to sell our souls by bringing bullfight to a region where it doesn’t exist,” he explains. But he has also got the sense to know that some traditions don’t travel well.
31.What can we learn about bullfighting from the first two paragraphs?
A.It is legal in France. B.It will boom tourism in France.

C.Bullfighting is a popular culture in many regions.
D.Regions sharing bullfight were separated by wars.
33.Why did Robert Marge refuse to organize a bullfight in Paris?
A.It ignores animal rights. B.It honors local tradition.

This 3-mile stretch of sand and tide pools beneath a castle of 80-foot cliffs is a California tourism poster if there ever was one. Nothing disturbs the perfect, sunny view, except — once you’re aware of them — microplastic particles (颗粒). But you have to look close-on-your-hands-and-knees close-to see one. And once you do, you see another and another — so many that you may not think of this, or any beach, the same way again. These tiny preproduction plastic balls that manufacturers (生产商) melt down to form everything have been escaping factories, container ships, trains, trucks — and public notice — for decades.
The 2- to 3-millimeter, multicolored balls are a subset (子集) of microplastic-plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in size. Microplastic particles accumulate where water takes them, and they’ve been found on shorelines of every continent.
Dr McReynolds is an environmental scientist who’s now joined a global movement studying their trail into the environment. Establishing a baseline count of the presence of microplastic particles — and, more broadly, any microplastics — is the focus of Dr McReynolds’ scientific study here. Charting the count, noting tide, current, and weather conditions will show if amounts are increasing, and perhaps at what rate and why. That knowledge, he says, can inform solutions to plastic pollution such as regulation of their use.
“What are you doing? Picking up trash?” asks a steady stream of beach walkers whenever Dr McReynolds’ crew walks onto the beach and sets up equipment. These are teachable moments for Dr McReynolds.
One recent morning he told some beach walkers how microplastic particles are believed to absorb toxic chemicals, and — because they resemble fish eggs — are eaten by fish and birds and enter the food chain. Almost right on time, a seagull hopped up to a plastic-coated photo of microplastic particles and hungrily pecked (啄食) at it.
Will his work help save the world? Dr McReynolds waves a finger at that idea, “I won’t ever use that word — I won’t save the world from this pollution problem. Preserve it, yes. We want to take care of it.”
35.What do we know about microplastic particles from paragraph 1?
A.They are too small to be seen. B.They have been ignored for long.
C.They are products of plastic balls. D.They can be made into almost everything.
36.What does Dr McReynolds focus on in his study?
A.Classifying plastic particles into subsets. B.Finding solutions to plastic pollution.
C.Charting the tides and currents of oceans. D.Creating a data collection for microplastics.
37.What does a seagull’s pecking at the picture prove?
A.The interesting teachable moments. B.The spread of poisonous chemicals.
C.The harmful effect of microplastic particles. D.The beauty of the photo of microplastic particles.
38.What does Dr McReynolds expect of his work?
A.To save the world. B.To protect the earth. C.To educate the public. D.To provide solutions.

Brownie and Spotty were neighbor dogs who met every day to play together. Like pairs of dogs in most any neighborhood, these two loved each other and played together so often that they had worn a path through the grass of the field between their houses.
One evening, Brownie’s family noticed that Brownie hadn’t returned home. They went looking for him with no success. Brownie didn’t show up the next day, and, despite their efforts to find him, by the next week he was still missing.
For several days, Spotty showed up at Brownie’s house alone, barking, crying and generally pestering (纠缠) Brownie’s family. Busy with their own lives, they just ignored the nervous little neighbor dog.
Finally, one morning Spotty refused to take “no” for an answer, keeping bothering Ted, Brownie’s owner. Spotty followed Ted about, barking insistently, then darting toward a nearby empty lot and back, as if to say, “Follow me! It’s urgent!”
Eventually, Ted followed the anxious Spotty across the empty ground as Spotty stopped to run back and bark encouragingly. The little dog led the man under a tree, past clumps of trees, to a desert place a half mile from the house. There Ted found his beloved Brownie alive, lying in the bottom of a deep hole with one of his hind leg injured. Then Ted noticed something quite remarkable. Spotty had done more than simply led Brownie’s human owner to his trapped friend. In a circle around the injured dog. Ted found plenty of dog food and realized that Spotty had been feeding Brownie that week!
Spotty had been visiting Brownie regularly, in a single minded quest to keep his friend alive by giving up his own comfort. Spotty had evidently stayed with Brownie to protect him from being killed, sleeping next to him at night to keep him warm and comforting him to keep his spirits up.
39.Why did Spotty bark toward Brownie’s family?
A.He hated the family for they lost Brownie.
B.He tried to get their attention and love.
C.He wanted to lead the family to save Brownie.
D.He wanted to ask for some food for Brownie.
40.Which words can best describe Spotty?
A.Brave and confident. B.Anxious and noisy.
C.Dependable and helpful. D.Smart’ and curious.
41.What will be probably written in the following paragraph?
A.Brownie soon died because of the injury.
B.Brownie was treated and recovered eventually.
C.Spotty was allowed to play with Brownie later.
D.Spotty gave up his own comfort to save Brownie.
42.Which may be the best title of the text?
    A.Every dog has its day
    B.Better late than never
C.A friend in need is a friend indeed
    D.Actions speak louder than words

Massimo Bottura, a three-Michelin-Starred chef, has extended his culinary(烹饪的) empire globally. However, he says that the peak of all of his achievements is Milan’s Refettorio Ambrosiano and the following 12 global branches.
At Refettorio Ambrosiano, dinner guests are greeted by name. They dine on fine china at tables created by the country’s most sought-after furniture designers. The waiters are polite, and the chefs have been trained under the finest restaurateurs in the world. The set menu changes every day, depending on what comes in with the morning’s delivery.
This morning’s delivery contains dry arugula(芝麻菜), chicken close to its sell-by date and too-ugly-to-be-sold oranges. By dinner, however, the supermarket castoffs have been transformed into a three-course meal. The 100 or so diners — refugees, the homeless, and the unemployed — enjoy the meal with obvious pleasure, laughing with the volunteer waiters, praising the volunteer chefs, and forgetting, at least for an hour, the challenges of a life lived on the streets.
The brightest gems in Bottura’s culinary empire are not restaurants at all. He thinks of them as spaces that shine a light on the dignity of their guests while focusing attention on the food-waste problem by turning foods that were otherwise going to be headed toward rubbish bins into Michelin Guide-worthy meals.
Botura first thought of Refettorio Ambrosiano as a pop-up concept for the 2015 World Expo in Milan. The organizers had invited him to cook for the grand opening. Bottura proposed something different. He wanted to invite the world’s best chefs to cook with him for the city’s homeless, using leftovers. That idea soon got supported and turned into something more permanent.
Today, the Refettorio is “a movement,” Bottura says. “It is a model for fighting food waste and isolation on the front lines. And it starts by looking at an old carrot or a piece of hard bread and catching sight of gold.”
46.How do the Refettorio Ambrosianos differ from Bottura’s other restaurants?
    A.The waiters are well-trained.
    B.The tables are custom-made.
    C.They are three-Michelin-starred.
D.Daily delivery decides the set menu.
47.Which of the following best describes the event at Refettorio Ambrosiano?
A.An evening gathering for local chefs. B.A charity sale of supermarket castoffs
C.A wealthy meal for the less-fortunate. D.A volunteer training for the homeless
48.What does Bottura think of the Refettorio?
    A.It’s his best profitable restaurant.
B.It’s a good project for food safety.
C.It’s a pop-up concept to extend his business.
D.It’s win-win for the environment and society.
49.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Less Waste, More Taste. B.A Dinner of Dignity
C.Best Restaurant, Best Service. D.The Power of Food

“I’ve done such a good job of pretending to be an outgoing person that friends and family are shocked when I tell them I’m not.” Ever since she was a teen, Amanda would adopt the behaviours of the people around her to fit in, while hiding her true personality. And sometimes it was hard to tell who was actually the real Amanda.
This is Social Masking, the process of covering your natural way of interacting with others so you can feel accepted. Social Maskers aren’t trying to cheat anyone; rather, they are hoping to blend in with everybody else. “Social Masking is a learned set of pattern-matching behaviours, movements and actions where you follow other’s suit to fit in rather than stand out,” explains psychotherapist Dipti Tait.
In a world that often tells us to just be ourselves, you might wonder why many of us rely on these Social Masking behaviours. “Social Masking happens because we want to fit in,” says Tait. The mask is a protection against our self-doubt. However, according to psychologist Quinn-Cirillo, social media may have made it even harder to be ourselves. She notes that it gives us set images and videos that make us believe this is how we should be. It strengthens the belief that you are not good enough as you are and break down your confidence over time. The more Amanda masked, the more she would lose faith.
So how can you break the cycle? Getting rid of the mask involves working to improve your self-worth, self-belief and self-respect. Once you hear those damaging thoughts that tell you it’s not OK to be yourself, take action and stop it. Doing this repeatedly over a period gives those self-defeating thoughts less power and improves your self-belief.
50.Why does the author mention Amanda in Paragraph 1?
    A.To tell a story.
    B.To give an example.
    C.To introduce the topic.

52.What is Quinn-Cirillo’s attitude to Social Masking?
    A.Unconcerned. B.Approving. C.Objective. D.Negative.
53.What is the author’s advice on removing social masks?
    A.Regaining confidence.
    B.Doing exercise regularly.
    C.Turning to a professional.
    D.Engaging in social activities.

Airplane accidents are statistically rare. When they do happen, however, they are often fatal and people want answers as to why their loved ones lost their lives, and that is where black boxes come into play.
A black box, known as flight recorder, is an electronic recording device placed in an aircraft to help the investigation of air accidents. The term “black box” was a World War II British phrase, originating with the development of radio, radar, and electronic navigational aids in British and Allied combat aircraft. These often-secret electronic devices were literally covered in non-reflective black boxes or housings, hence the name “black box”.
There are two different flight recorder devices: the flight data recorder (FDR) as well as the cockpit voice recorder (CVR). Together, the FDR and CVR objectively document the aircraft’s flight history, which may assist in any later investigation. They are usually kept in the tail of an aircraft, where they are more likely to survive a crash. FDRs record things like airspeed, height and vertical acceleration (垂直加速度) and has about 25 hours of recording storage. The CVRs store the crew’s interactions with each other and air traffic control, as well as the background noise that can give vital clues to investigators in case of a crash. However, a CVR can store only two hours of cockpit voice recording.
Though the black box is useful, it’s looking increasingly likely that the little one will be replaced by streaming all essential data directly to a ground-based station. Air-to-ground systems can send flight data to a home base via satellite, which help to reduce time to search for a box, possibly avoiding a crisis. However, satellite and GPS capacity and data storage speeds are all areas that are being developed by scientists to support new innovations that are faster and lighter. The challenge is to build the systems to manage a large number of data that are needed to make it possible to track all commercial flight activity, especially the use of satellites and data storage.
54.What’s the function of a flight recorder?
    A.To avoid airplane accidents.
    B.To help investigate air crashes.
C.To save lives of the passengers.
D.To answer the questions of loved ones.
55.Why is a flight recorder called a black box?
A.For its container. B.For its design. C.For its function. D.For its position.
56.What can be learned about the flight recorder devices?
A.FDR is more effective than CVR.
B.The data can be preserved for two days.
C.The background noise can be recorded by FDR.
D.They are fixed at the back of the aircraft to keep safe.
57.Which of the following may the author agree?
A.Scientists need to improve the speed to store data.
B.Commercial flight data can not be tracked and stored.
C.The black box will be replaced by other facilities soon.
D.It will take more time for air-to-ground systems to find the black box.

Scientists have used lasers (激光) to generate electricity in the lab before. Recently Swiss researchers have found in a mountaintop experiment that a powerful laser can grab hold of a lightning flash and reroute its path through the sky, which is the first demonstration that the technique works in real-world storms and could someday lead to better protection, against lightning.
Today’s most common anti-lightning tech is the classic lightning rod, a meters-long metal pole rooted to the ground. It attracts lightning and safely guides the electricity into the ground. But the area protected by a lightning rod is limited by the rod’s height. “If you want to protect large buildings like airports, you would need a lightning rod of kilometer size,” says Aurélien Houard, a French physicist. Such at all metal pole would be impractical But a laser could reach that far, stopping distant lightning flashes and taking them down to ground-based metal rods.
Houard and his colleagues tested this idea a top Säntis mountain in Switzerland. They setup a high-power laser near a telecommunication tower tipped with a lightning rod that is struck by lightning around 100 times every year. The tower was hit by lightning four times while the laser was on. One of those strikes happened in a fairly clear sky, allowing two high-speed cameras to shoot the moment. Those images showed lightning rushing down from the clouds and following the laser light for some 50 meters toward the tower’s lightning rod.
To follow the paths of the three flashes they couldn’t see, the researchers looked at radio waves given off by the lightning. Those radio waves showed the three strikes followed the path of the laser much more closely than other strikes that happened when the laser was off. This suggested that the laser guided these three strikes to the lightning rod as well.
It’s a real achievement but the laser is too expensive. It’ll probably take a decade or more before it’s truly able to protect large buildings.
65.What new function of lasers was discovered in the outdoor experiment?
A.To prevent storms. B.To produce electricity.
C.To set off lightning flashes. D.To redirect lightning strikes.
66.What aspect of a lightning rod does paragraph 2 focus on?

A.Through cameras. B.Through its radio waves.
    C.Through a tower. D.Through a lightning rod.
68.Where can we most probably read this text?
    A.In a personal diary. B.In a popular magazine.
    C.In a physics textbook. D.In a class presentation.

Germany may be famous for its wealth of history and culture, but it also houses some of Europe's most wild and wonderful landscapes.
    Jasmund National Park
It lies on the west coast of the offshore island of Rugen. This UNESCO-protected site is the smallest of Germany's national parks. It is here that painter Caspar David Friedrich found himself inspired to create one of his masterpieces, Chalk Cliffs on Rugen, in 1818. Here long trails can take you all the way to the Rugen coastline, where white-sand beaches and blue waters wait.
    Berchtesgaden National Park
Berchtesgaden is one of Germany's oldest and most beautiful conservation areas. Trails go in and out of the forest leading you along the banks of glassy lakes. The more adventurous visitors may choose paragliding (滑翔伞运动) from Mount Jenner and they can fly over 1,800 meters. Back on the ground a network of more than 150 miles of walking trails twist through the forest.
    Southern Black Forest Nature Park
The highland areas, with views over Switzerland and France are a good place for food-lovers. Activities in the park range from hiking and fishing to mountain biking, while the slower traveller will enjoy the trails for an escape from everyday life.
    The Bliesgau Biosphere
This place is home to almost half of all German orchid (兰花) species. The grasslands spread for miles, drawing in different butterflies. Thanks to its comfortable climate, this is a region of sustainable development. In fact, this park is an example of farming done right and offers agricultural tricks to anyone eager to learn.

根据第一段中“The idea was to boil down great books to a sentence each. “Moby-Dick” by American writer Herman Melville, for instance, was reduced to: “A whale of a tale about the one that got away.”(这个想法是将伟大的书籍简化为一个句子。例如,美国作家Herman Melville的《白鲸》就被简化为:“一个关于逃走的那个人的故事。”)”和划线句子下文“How could a single sentence convey the essence (精髓)of a masterpiece with over five hundred pages?(一句话怎么能表达出一部五百多页的杰作的精髓呢?)”

根据最后一段中“Blinkist is instead a service that changes books for people who don’t, in fact, want to read. A 15-minute summary misses the point of reading; speed-reading with the app isn’t reading at all.(Blinkist是一个为那些实际上并不想读书的人更换书籍的服务。15分钟的摘要没有抓住阅读的要点;使用应用程序进行快速阅读根本就不是阅读)”可推知,作者对Blinkist的态度是否定的。故选D。

34.主旨大意题。根据第二段“The rising passion for blood and sand has been resisted by animal-rights activists. Last month someone set off a bomb near the bullring in Carcassonne. Yet France’s enthusiasts fiercely defend their right to these moral rituals. Bullfighting, they insist, is part of the heritage, an expression of a shared regional culture that should be protected.(对血和沙子日益高涨的热情受到了动物权利活动家的抵制。 故选A。

37.推理判断题。根据第五段“One recent morning he told some beach walkers how microplastic particles are believed to absorb toxic chemicals, and — because they resemble fish eggs — are eaten by fish and birds and enter the food chain. Almost right on time, a seagull hopped up to a plastic-coated photo of microplastic particles and hungrily pecked (啄食) at it.(最近的一个早晨,他告诉一些海滩上的步行者,塑料微粒如何吸收有毒化学物质,而且——因为它们看起来像鱼卵——会被鱼和鸟吃掉,进入食物链。正好这时候,一只海鸥跳到一张塑料微粒的塑料涂层照片上,饥饿地啄着它)”可知,塑料微粒会吸收有毒化学物质,被鱼或鸟吃掉,然后进入食物链,当他正在讲解这种微塑料的危害的时候,正好一只海鸥飞向照片,并且用嘴啄起来,这说明了这种微塑料的危害性。故选C。
