Many kinds of turtles (海龟) found in the Philippines are endangered. But now, the turtles have one less threat. Many people who used to collect their eggs to eat or to sell are now working to keep turtles safe.
Those people are called poachers (偷猎者). Now, however, protection organizations are teaching former poachers how to safely collect the eggs and protect them before they hatch (孵化). The people who do this are paid about 37 cents per egg. That is four times more than they would earn from selling them illegally.
One of the former poachers is Johnny Manlugay. “I’ve learned to love this work,” he said, adding that he did not know it was illegal to eat turtle eggs and their meat. He now collects the eggs carefully and brings them to a group called Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions (CURMA), which takes the eggs and puts them under the sand in a safe place. When the baby turtles hatch, they are directed to the water.
The turtles are called “pawikan” in the local language. They are at risk not only from poachers, but also climate change and habitat loss.
Carlos Tamayo is one of CURMA’s leaders. “We talked to the poachers, and it turned out poaching was just another means for them to earn a living,” he said. “They had no choice.”
Cabagbag is over 40 years old. His wife and seven-year-old son sometimes help him collect turtle eggs. Since October, they have taken over 1,000 eggs to CURMA.Cabagbag said that once he received training and learned that the turtles were endangered, he stopped poaching.
When the baby turtles hatch, many visitors come to watch them run down the beach and into the water. Cabagbag said seeing the turtles get safely into the water brings him a feeling of joy.
4.What is one of the ways of the organizations to protect turtles?

Official figures show that 101 people were killed in road accidents on the streets of London last year. The city wants to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on the capital’s roads to zero. It seems impossible. But it focuses more minds on an important question: What can help reduce accidents in a big city? Transport for London (TfL), the capital’s road and rail authority, has some answers: safe speeds, safe vehicles and so on.
A safety standard for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs), which harnesses blind area cameras and sensors (传感器), is pioneering. Blind area cameras and sensors are widely placed where they are needed. The European Commission has followed it. TfL has also helpfully identified London’s most dangerous places. Half of Britain’s most dangerous roads run through the capital. Around three-quarters of accidents that cause deaths or serious injuries happen at crossing near the British Museum, which has been the site of the most deaths since 2012. Westminster is the most dangerous area for walkers and cyclists, so it introduced 20 mph speed limits on all its roads in 2021.
“Vision Zero” was launched in 2018. Deaths and serious injuries on London’s roads have fallen — by 53% and 40% respectively in 2022. But movement is not one-way. Deaths were record breakingly low in 2020 and 2021. But in 2022 the deaths rose again. “We are moving in the right direction,” says Will Norman, London’s walking and cycling commissioner.
Lack of funds for TfL has put off improving the riskiest areas. Only a few parts of the1010 Avenue have bike paths with guardrails (护栏). Safety is the biggest problem to people taking up cycling or letting their children walk or cycle. But greener vehicles may be unsafe themselves. Electric scooters (滑板车) are the latest ones to confuse planners. “One of those doing 50 mph down the road is not good for anybody,” said Mr Norman.

11.What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.Bike lanes are not safe anymore for riders on roads.
B.Children should think twice when taking up cycling.
C.Safety has been a problem for some eco-friendly vehicles.
D.Electric scooters have become the biggest confusion for planners.
Widespread descriptions of animals in pop culture could actually be hurting the animals’ survival chances in the wild, a new research suggests.
Franck Courchamp of the University of Paris-Sud was interested in the idea of “appeal” (吸引力) in animals. He wanted to know: What species do people consider appealing? And what are the influences of being appealing on populations of animals in the wild?
In a research published this month, Courchamp and other researchers list the top 20 appealing species. They deemed large mammals living on land are appealing. Coming in first place are tigers, followed by lions, elephants, giraffes, panthers, pandas, cheetahs, polar bears, wolves, and gorillas. However, at least half of the interviewees didn’t realize that five of the top ten most appealing species are threatened. It is strange that we do not protect the species we care about the most.
The study also finds that we are flooded with images of these creatures, even as they are becoming fewer in the wild. The study suggests that too much imagination might be creating a “virtual population” of the animals in people’s minds, making them believe there are far more individuals in the wild than is exact.
The study authors suggest that companies who benefit from the use of these images should set as idea small percentage of their profits for protection efforts and informational campaigns. “That would be not only something fair, but something that could bring a win-win situation for them,” Courchamp says. It could bring them positive public relation, for example. Besides, if a company’s mascot (吉祥物) goes extinct, that could hurt them from a marketing point, Courchamp says. But not enough companies are “truly concerned about the protection of the species that they work on,” he adds.
12.The widespread descriptions of animals may ______ according to Paragraph 1.
A.make people aware of the necessity of wild protection
B.lead people to protect animals
C.be beneficial for both animals and humans
D.reduce the animals’ survival chances
13.What does the underlined word “deemed” mean in Paragraph 3?

A.They are among the best liked. B.They have a large population in the wild.
C.They have died out. D.They are well protected.
15.How does Courchamp list the companies’ responsibilities and their advantages?
A.By doing experiments. B.By giving examples.
C.By asking a question. D.By listing data.
Achieving a healthy work-life balance — an idea that has spread to countries around the world — has become one of the primary social goals today. This has resulted in an immediate need for companies to allow for a variety of workstyles such as working from home, while also providing a friendly work environment that can bring out the best in each employee.
It all sounds very promising, but in reality, most offices today feature (以……为特色) the same boring designs. To make matters worse, air conditioning is often kept to a minimum to cut electricity costs, while windows are covered with blinds to prevent dizziness from longer exposure to natural light. Employees who work indoors are forced to spend most of their days in these unpleasantly warm environments. Since the choice is to build costly new offices that are brighter and more open, there is a real need for solutions that can create a sense of brightness and openness.
This is where Mitsubishi Electric’s revolutionary new technology comes into play. It is a lighting solution to produce the exact deep blue color of a clear sky. Using this technology, offices can work in a way that was not possible with previous LED lights.
The blue skies that are seen on a clear day are produced by what is known as Rayleigh scattering (散射). Because blue light waves are shorter than red light waves, they are scattered towards us more strongly — this is why the sky looks blue during the day.
Mitsubishi Electric’s LED skylight uses the same phenomenon to artificially create the sky’s deep blue quality. It is made up of a slim sky blue panel (嵌板) and a four-sided frame. Of the four frames, only three are lit up at any given time, while the fourth remains dark as if the light were entering at an angle — an important detail that creates the false idea of actual sunlight pouring in through a skylight. Thanks to this technology, one can remain in a closed room and still enjoy the great excitement of looking up at a deep blue sky.
16.What is a healthy work-life balance like according to the writer?
A.It encourages employees to work indoors.
B.It improves employees’ health conditions.
C.It brings out the best of every employer.
D.It includes different kinds of workstyles.
17.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The costly choices of most old offices.
B.The promising future of office workers.
C.The work conditions in the offices today.
D.The virtual solutions to improve productivity.
18.How does Mitsubishi Electric’s LED skylight work?
A.By letting actual sunlight pour in.
B.By lighting three sides of the frames.
C.By changing the previous LED light.
D.By showing pictures the deep blue sky.
19.Which of the following can best describe the effect of Mitsubishi Electric’s LED skylight?
A.Colorful. B.Boring. C.Dizzy. D.Enjoyable.
The beach may seem like an inviting place to run on a cool summer morning, but is running on the sand good for your body? It can be, but it’s important to be aware of the challenges that some beach runners experience before you get ready.
Running on the beach can be a good thing. It’s certainly different from running on a track or a pavement. For starters, sand can be a challenge because it has an uneven(不平坦的) surface. As you push off, you’re going to lose some of your push as the sand moves. So, you’re not going to be able to push yourself forward as you would on a track or a pavement. But this unevenness has an upside: It gives your body an extra workout, forcing you to exercise muscles that don’t get as much use during runs on firm surfaces. For example, your feet, ankles and lower back might feel sorer and more tired than usual after a beach run just because the surface is constantly moving and changing step to step.
You also might feel sore afterward because beaches tend to slope (倾斜) down to the water. If you’re going for a long run on the beach, you might notice that one side of your body might feel sorer because you’re putting more pressure on it due to the slope.
Some beach runners prefer to run barefoot-- not wearing anything on feet. However, if you’re not used to barefoot running, start slowly and don’t run long distances at first. That’s because running barefoot uses more different muscles than running with shoes does, and it’s important to strengthen these muscles and adapt your feet. If you want to run barefoot and as long as you run carefully enough into it, go for it!
Running on the sand can be a smart choice for you, because running on softer ground surfaces can reduce muscle damage.
20.Why is it difficult to run on the beach for starters? ________
A.The soft surface makes people fall over easily.
B.It’s hard to keep one’s balance on its hard surface.
C.People need to run carefully on its smooth surface.
D.Running on its uneven surface takes much effort.
21.Which of the following best explains “upside” underlined in Paragraph 2? ________
A.Challenge. B.Advantage. C.Reason. D.Character.
22.What’s the author’s attitude to barefoot running? ________
A.Positive. B.Critical. C.Doubtful. D.Uncaring.
23.The passage can probably be found in ________.
A.a primary school textbook B.a tourist guide
C.a sports magazine D.a scientific report
In a major step forward for monitoring the biodiversity of marine(海洋的)systems, a new study published in the journal Environmental DNA details how Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute(MBARI) researchers are using autonomous underwater robots to sample environmental DNA(eDNA), which allows scientists to detect the presence of aquatic species from the tiny bits of genetic(遗传学的) material they leave behind. This “DNA soup” offers clues about biodiversity changes in sensitive areas and the presence of rare or endangered species-all critical to understanding and preserving a healthy ocean.
Researchers combined two novel autonomous platforms developed by MBARI for this study-the Long-Range Autonomous Underwater Vehicle(LRAUV) and the Environmental Sample Processor(ESP). The LRAUV can travel for weeks at a time and for hundreds of kilometers. It can enable more frequent sampling in remote sites than traditional research ships. The ESP is a robotic “laboratory-in-a-can” that filters(过滤) seawater and preserves eDNA for future study. By equipping an LRAUV with ESP technology, researchers can monitor the ocean better.
“We know that eDNA is an incredibly powerful tool for studying ocean communities, but we’ve been limited by what we can accomplish using expensive crewed research ships. Now, autonomous technology is helping us make better use of our time and resources to study previously unsurveyed regions of the ocean,” said Kobun Truelove, a biological oceanographer at MBARI and the lead author of the paper.
Marine biodiversity is a measure of the abundance of individuals and species in the ocean. This interconnected mixture of organisms supports food webs, produces the air we breathe, and regulates our climate. Autonomous tools like the LRAUV and ESP enable MBARI researchers to monitor changes in sensitive ecosystems in ways that were not possible previously.
“Ship-based research will continue to play an important role in oceanographic studies, but adding new autonomous technology to the toolkit will expand capacity for research, monitoring, and resource management,” said Truelove.
24.What do the underlined words “aquatic species” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Those living in water. B.Those growing near water.
C.Those becoming endangered. D.Those consuming eDNA.
25.What can the LRAUV do?
A.Filter seawater effectively.
B.Preserve eDNA for future study.
C.Travel for months at a time in the ocean.
D.Reach remote areas of the ocean frequently.
26.What can we infer from Truelove’s words?
A.Autonomous technology is more economical and efficient.
B.Ship-based research is more time-saving and energy-saving.
C.Autonomous robots have entirely replaced traditional research ships.
D.Crewed research ships help researchers study new parts of the ocean.
27.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Researchers Discover a “DNA Soup”
B.Autonomous Technology Needs Improving
C.Robots Sample eDNA to Monitor Ocean Health
D.The Biodiversity of the Ocean Needs Protection
A company called Loon is partnering with Telkom Kenya, Kenya’s third-largest cell service company. The company is using balloons to deliver the Internet to people across Kenya.
Loon’s balloons are basically floating cell towers. And they are massive—each is about as big as a tennis court. The balloons float about 20 kilometers above the Earth. The huge plastic balloons can float for up to 100 days, running on solar power. Loon is using 35 balloons to make the Internet easily accessible around 50,000 square kilometers of Kenya.
Delivering Internet via balloons seems fragile. In fact, Internet service delivery from the stratosphere (平流层) is highly effective. Rather than fight against the wind, the balloon teaches itself to find a favorable wind current. At altitude, network coverage footprints can be more widespread, and coverage can be shifted as demand changes. In addition, there’s less ground-based engineering construction; developers can avoid more trouble in laying cables or wires. More importantly, service interruptions are possibly more controllable. A provider doesn’t have to trace faults through remote ground infrastructure (设施). Backup balloons could be staged, waiting to be placed into service.
Now some Kenyans are using the service to watch videos, look at websites, and make video and voice calls. Others beef a bit, saying that Loon’s service covers areas of Kenya that already have some cell phone service, instead of remote, poorly-connected areas in the north. Loon says it will speed up the process. After Kenya, Loon plans to use its balloons in other parts of the world. Many people will be watching Loon’s Kenya project carefully to see if it succeeds in a way that could be repeated in other countries.
Before this, Loon’s balloons were used mainly to provide Internet service to disaster victims in Puerto Rico, following Hurricane Maria, and in Peru following an 8.0 magnitude earthquake.
28.What is the function of the floating cell towers?
A.Receiving signals from satellites.
B.Keeping electric wires connected.
C.Bringing Internet access to Kenyans.
D.Relaying television signals to distant areas.
29.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.A major drawback of using balloons.
B.Benefits from repair and construction.
C.A reason for making use of the stratosphere.
D.Advantages of the Internet-enabled balloons.
30.What is people’s attitude towards Loon’s future projects?
A.Unconcerned. B.Disappointed. C.Expectant. D.Satisfied.
31.What’s the best title for the text?
A.Is Choosing Balloons a Better Way?
B.Balloon-powered Internet Service in Kenya
C.Loon’s Internet Service During Emergencies
D.Will Unequal Internet Connection Be Addressed?
A Canadian named Justin was fishing during a recent rafting (漂流) trip on the Red Deer and South Saskatchewan Rivers when he heard something noisy in the water. He saw a nose barely above the water. Unable to tell what kind of animal it was in the dark and water, Justin reached for the animal but ended up falling out of his raft in the freezing cold river. Luckily, Justin was somehow able to locate the animal—a coyote pup (郊狼崽)—in the water and catch his raft before it floated away for good.
Unfortunately, when Justin brought the animal back to his raft, the baby coyote was unconscious and didn’t seem to be breathing. The pup was lucky again. Justin had experience with CPR and pushed on its belly in hopes of revival(复活). After a few pushes, water came out of the coyote’s nose and he was breathing again! Justin and his new friend were both wet through so they made their way back to land, where Justin made a fire and tried to warm the little guy up.
During his 10-day rafting trip, Justin brought the coyote he named YipYip along for the ride, and kept the coyote with him the entire time. The little pup would eat with Justin and sleep in his backpack. Justin wrapped him in his jacket when it was cold. When Justin was able to get Internet service, he called his wife for advice. The couple eventually got in touch with the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Saskatchewan (WRSOS).
According to WRSOS president Bonnie Dell, YipYip quickly befriended the other adopted coyote pups. “He is wilding up and has a healthy fear of humans now. He will not be returned to the wild until he is old enough,” Dell said, adding that YipYip would have died without Justin’s efforts.

Children whose fathers make time to play with them from a very young age may find it easier control their behavior as they grow up, research suggests.
To understand what effect playtime with dads can have on kids, the researchers analyzed nearly 80 studies, undertaken between 1977 and 2017 — most of them in Europe or North America. They were most interested in understanding how playtime between dads and their kids translated into kids’ development.
On average, they found that most fathers play with their children every day. Even with the smallest children, however, father-child play tends to be more physical. With babies, that may simply mean picking them up or helping them to gently raise their arms and legs; with toddlers (学步儿童), physical play includes rough-and-tumble activities, like chasing (追赶) game.
The study found that the kids who enjoyed playtime with their fathers were less likely to lose their tempers with other kids and exhibited better behavior. The researchers found that this was beneficial kids’ development, as this type of play was associated with better self-control and behavioral outcomes.
“Physical play creates fun, exciting situations in which children have to apply self-regulation.” said Ramchandani, Professor at the University of Cambridge. “They learn from their mistakes and the reactions they get from others. If they react the wrong way, they might get scolded, but it’s not the end of the world — and next time they might remember to behave differently.”
However, the researchers stress that children who only live with their mothers need not be at a disadvantage. “Different parents may have slightly different inclinations when it comes to playing with children, but part of being a parent is stepping outside your comfort zone. Children are likely to benefit most if they are given different ways to play and interact,” said Ramchandani.
36.What did the researchers focus on during the research?
A.How father-child play affected kids’ growth.
B.What role mothers played during the activities.
C.How often fathers and children played together.
D.What lessons they could learn from the past studies.
37.How did children learn to regulate themselves?
A.With the help of their partners. B.Through a trial-and-error practice.

A.Fathers should learn to control their tempers.
B.Mother-child play needs to be more physical.
C.Fathers spend more time with kids than mothers.
D.Father-child playtime helps kids develop self-control.
José Andrés is a famous Spanish-American chef with many restaurants in the United States. He has also helped provide food to people after natural disasters with his World Central Kitchen.

One of the most important things of the U. S. government’s routine in 2020 is to raise the federal (联邦) legal age for buying tobacco from age 18 to 21.
Beginning in the summer of 2020, it will be against the law to sell tobacco to anyone under the age of 21. Since 1990, the legal age permitted to buy cigarette is at least 18. The law also includes e-cigarette, not just traditional tobacco products like cigarettes and cigars, adding regulation to this industry, which has developed largely unchecked.
The use of E-cigarette has increased sharply among U. S. teenagers. According to the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, 27.5% of U. S. high school students have used e-cigarette in the past month. Raising the age one can buy tobacco is intended to avoid what many people are calling an epidemic, which is doing great harm to the health of American teenagers.
A recent outbreak of the disease related to e-cigarette has raised even more concern about e-cigarette products , although the disease is largely linked to cartridges (药筒) filled with addictive Vitamin E acetate sold in black market.
In a statement to TIME, the American Lung Association considered raising the age one can buy tobacco as an easy way to protect children’s health and prevent them from getting addicted to nicotine.
Those in favor of e-cigarette have made it clear that they support raising the legal age permission for buying and using tobacco, arguing that e-cigarette products are never designed for young people. Some anti-cigarette (反对吸烟) people have expressed their doubt of this opinion.
At present, twenty states have already raised the legal age to buy cigarette to 21.
44.What can we learn about the new law for buying tobacco?
A.It’s good for the tobacco market. B.It also works for e-cigarette.
C.It aims to stop selling cigarette. D.It’ll be illegal to buy cigarette.

B.Cigarettes only do harm to young people.
C.E-cigarette should not be allowed.
D.People don’t have to obey the legal law.
47.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Science. B.Culture. C.Health. D.Economy.
Have you ever lost your direction? Then you might find satellite navigation (satnav) systems (卫星定位系统) helpful.
A satnav system uses groups of satellites. They send information to a receiver (接收器), such as your smartphone. Then they can find where you are.
The earliest satnav system is the Global Positioning System (GPS) of the United States. The US has put 24 satellites into space to make sure GPS can locate a person correctly and globally. Likewise, Russia’s GLONASS and European Union’s Galileo can also work globally.
But China is catching up, building its own BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. BeiDou is China’s homegrown satnav system, reported Xinhua. It was set up in 2000, when China sent BeiDou’s first navigation experiment satellite into space. With it, China became the third country to build a satnav system after the US and Russia.
BeiDou can find you wherever you are. It helps you go faster by finding shortcuts (捷径) and using correct directions. When you are in trouble and call the police, they will know exactly where you are if you have a cellphone that uses BeiDou.
Today, there are more than 20 BeiDou satellites above our heads. And the system is able to offer open services to the Asia-Pacific region (亚太地区).
In November, China plans to send more BeiDou-3 satellites into space. BeiDou-3’s position accuracy(准确度)is less than five meters, Ran Chengqi, a senior designer of the satellite navigation system, told China Daily.
By 2022, BeiDou is planned to have 35 satellites and begin serving globally, reported Xinhua.

Always set a realistic work target. 52 . For example, plan to read one chapter of a book each evening rather than think about reading the whole book over the weekend. This kind of detailed, planned target is more effective than a vague commitment.
Rewards
53 . For example, stop for a cup of coffee or tea, or listen to a favorite piece of music after one hour’s study. Rewarding yourself for keeping to your work plan will make you feel good about yourself.
Timing
Make sure you choose a suitable time to study, i. e. when it is quiet and when you are most alert. Try to make this a regular, timetabled part of your day. 54 , do not find reasons to put off getting started.
Quantity
A large task such as researching a new topic for an essay can be so flaunting, in fact, that it can be difficult to sit clown and make a start. Break the larger task down into several smaller ones. For example, make a list of questions that you will have to deal with in your essay, and then approach each question separately. 55 .
Notes and learning styles
The books you are studying won’t always present information in a way that suits your learning style. Therefore, 56 and organizing them in a way that suits you best. It is also a good idea to keep your notebooks neat and well organized. This will make it much easier to find information later.
A.Don’t try to do too much
B.This makes the work more manageable
C.Develop a system of small rewards for your work
D.If you plan to start work at a certain time
E.It is sometimes helpful to tell your friends about your plan
F.When you set your study targets, allow regular revision time
G.it is worthwhile spending time making notes

The Internet has become a part of human life. There’s a report on 3, 375 people aged from 10 to 38 in seven Chinese cities. It says that 38 percent of them believe they use the Internet often. While most of them get useful information and use the Internet in their works and studies. Some are not using it in a good way. Many are playing online games too much. A few even visit websites they should not look at. It seems that we can’t live in a world without the Internet.
Actually, we are all busy talking about and using the Internet, but how many of us know the history of the Internet?
Many people are surprised when they find that the Internet was set up in the 1960s. At that time, computers were large and expensive. Computer network didn’t work well. If one computer in the network broke down, then the whole network stopped. So a new network system (系统) had to be set up.
It should be good enough to be used by many different computers. If part of the network was not working, information could be sent through another part. In this way computer network system would keep on working all the time. At first the Internet was only used by the government, but in the early 1970s, universities, hospitals and banks were allowed to use it, too. However, computers were still very expensive and the Internet was difficult to use. By the start of 1990s, computers became cheaper and easier to use. Scientists had also developed software that made “surfing” the Internet easier.
Today it is easy to get online and it is said that millions of people use the Internet every day. Sending e-mails is more and more popular among young people. The Internet has now become one of the most important parts of people’s life.
60.How long has the Internet been used?
A.For about 10 years. B.For about 20 years. C.For about 40 years. D.For about 60 years
61.What is TRUE about computers in the 1990s?
A.They became cheaper and easier to use. B.They became larger and larger.
C.People couldn’t buy them anywhere. D.People could get information only from them.
62.What can we infer from the last sentence?
A.People will be happy without the Internet. B.People will more and more depend on the Internet.
C.People live a hard life with the Internet. D.All people should stop to use their computers.
63.Which is the best title for this passage?
A.Computers and the Government B.Computers and Information
C.The History of the Internet D.The History of Inventions
Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.
Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.
Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin-offs of space exploration. The technical improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems have long been in effect.
While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human beings to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist.
64.What might be the key to those questions mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.Potential dangers. B.Knowledge.
C.Civilization. D.Humans’ nature.
65.Which of the following can best replace “spin-offs” underlined in Paragraph 4?
A.Survival chances. B.Unexpected benefits.
C.Potential resources. D.Physical possessions.
66.In which situation may this text be applied properly?
A.A class presentation. B.A private conversation.
C.A cartoon picture. D.A fashion review.
67.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.How Knowledge Benefits US B.What Humans Spread For
C.Why to Explore Space D.How Humans Save Ourselves
To grow sugary dates (椰枣) in the sand, Siwa’s farmers must first make the desert suitable for farming. An oasis (绿洲) in Egypt, Siwa has been home to humans for thousands of years. Since ancient times, the oasis has hosted farms producing some of the most valuable dates in Egypt, and sugary dates have appeared on Egyptians’ tables.
The desert environment in Siwa is not quite fit for plants to grow. For example, the water there contains much salt. However, with local people’s efforts, the Siwa oasis contains complex agricultural fields, where date trees, crops and other plants grow in harmony. That impressed me a lot during my visit to the oasis. To make a new piece of field, farmers first remove the top soil and replace it with a mixture of sand and waste matter from animals. The first plants are medicinal plants. Then, farmers plant date trees and olive trees. These farming skills are passed down from generation to generation.
To grow date trees is demanding. And it takes 10 years for a new date tree to mature, but once it does, the tree produces generous fruit: around 110 pounds of dates per year. Each farmer picks dates with the skilled hands. They climb the trees using nothing more than a belt. In total, Siwa grows more than 25,000 tons of dates from 280,000 trees per year.
The dates can be eaten fresh, or made dry. Every part of the date tree is significant in Siwa, from leaves made into beds and boxes to wood used to build houses. And then, of course, there’s the fruit itself. The dates can be cooked with goat meat or mixed with eggs for breakfast. They can also be mixed with flour, water, and olive oil, and boiled slowly to make a local dessert.
Local farmers once developed many unique date varieties, which their camels carried to Cairo. But later many of those varieties perished. And today only several major varieties remain and some have become quite rare and been at risk. The 1985 construction of a road in the oasis made the survival of local agricultural tradition even tougher.
68.What can we learn about sugary dates from Paragraph 1?
A.They can adapt to tough environment.
B.They have existed for a long time.
C.They’re introduced to Egypt from abroad.
D.They’re the most valuable fruit in Egypt.
69.What impressed the author a lot during his visit to Siwa?
A.The great variety of plants grown there.
B.The hard but happy life of local people.
C.The great complexity of the local agriculture.
D.The local farmers’ wisdom and contribution to farming.
70.What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.People’s preference for dates. B.The introduction to local food.
C.The usage of date trees’ different parts. D.The locals’ high expectations of date trees.
71.What does the underlined word “perished” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Died out. B.Spread out. C.Got created. D.Became known.
Short stories for kids can provide them with a lot of fun and entertainment and also teach them the important values of life.
There are some popular short stories around the world. For example, The Ugly Duckling, written by Hans Christian Anderson, which is based on the change of an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan, is one of the most inspiring short stories for children. Then there is The Boy Who Cried Wolf, a classic Aesop’s fable which shows kids the importance of always telling the truth. Little Red Riding Hood, which is written by the Brothers Grimm, tells kids about a strong and brave girl called Little Red Riding Hood and how she fights with an evil wolf to save her grandmother. Here are some examples of different types of short stories.
Ghost stories can be really entertaining and most kids enjoy them. While telling such kinds of stories, you should raise and lower your voice properly and make expressions suitable to what is happening in the story.
Historical stories can help children understand the lives of great leaders and heroes of the past. This will not only help show useful values to children, but also help them perform better in the subject of history.
In stories related to nature, you would be describing famous rivers, mountains and seas. Tell kids what nature has given us and how we should protect it for our own good.
Short stories not only keep kids entertained, but they also help to develop their sense of imagination and creative way of thinking. You can also make up some short stories of your own and spend some quality time with your kids.
72.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.The Boy Who Cried Wolf shows the importance of telling the truth.

A study of 27,000 men showed those skipping (不吃) breakfast were at a greater risk of heart problems. The British Heart Foundation said breakfast helped people resist (抵制) sugary snacks before lunch.
The men, aged 45—82, were studied for 16 years. During that time there were more than 1,500 heart attacks or cases of deadly heart failure. However, people who skipped breakfast were 27% more likely to have heart problems than those who started the day with a meal. The researchers took into consideration other lifestyle risk factors such as smoking and exercise.
Researcher Dr Leah Cahill told the BBC: “The take-home message is to eat in the morning when you wake up, preferably within an hour. The results show that something is better than nothing, but it’s always better to have something healthy and balanced.”
She said the timing of the meal seemed to be key and waiting until lunch rather than “having breakfast” may be straining (损伤) the body over time. This could be increasing the risk of high blood pressure and fatness which could in turn damage the heart. “Don’t skip breakfast,” Dr Cahill suggested.
Victoria Taylor, an expert with the British Heart Foundation, said: “These researchers only looked at men aged over 45, so we would need to see further research to prove that breakfast has the same effect on the heart health of other groups of people. What we do know is that a healthy breakfast can make that mid-morning biscuit less tempting, as well as giving you another opportunity to widen the variety of foods in your diet. Cereals (谷类食品) with low fat milk are a good way to start the day. Try a banana or dried fruit on top and you’ll be on your way to a fine day before you’ve even left the house.”
76.What does the text mainly deal with?
A.The effects of snacks on the health of the heart.
B.An interview by the BBC on people’s lifestyles.
C.The relationship between breakfast and a healthy heart.
D.What a healthy and balanced diet should contain.
77.Dr Leah Cahill’s suggestion is that we should ______.
A.fix the time for each meal we eat in a day B.have breakfast within an hour after waking up
C.eat our breakfast immediately after getting up D.make sure our breakfast is always delicious
78.The underlined word “tempting” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “______”.
A.attractive B.expensive C.obvious D.familiar
79.According to Victoria Taylor, ______.
A.men over 45 are more likely to get heart diseases
B.fresh fruits like bananas are necessary for a healthy breakfast
C.it’s healthy to eat some biscuit between breakfast and lunch
D.the researchers should have covered other age groups in their study

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了沙滩跑步的优缺点,并给沙滩跑步者提出了一些有用的建议和注意事项。
20.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Running on the beach can be a good thing. It’s certainly different from running on a track or a pavement. For starters, sand can be a challenge because it has an uneven surface. As you push off, you’re going to lose some of your push as the sand moves. So, you’re not going to be able to push yourself forward as you would on a track or a pavement. (在沙滩上跑步是一件好事。这当然不同于在跑道上或人行道上跑步。对于起跑者来说,沙子可能是一个挑战,因为它的表面不平坦。当你跑起来的时候,随着沙子移动,你会失去一些推力。所以,你不能像在跑道或人行道上那样推动自己前进。)”可知,在沙滩上起跑,会因为沙滩不平坦而而无法像在跑道或人行道那样容易前进,所以需要付出很大的努力。故选D项。
21.词句猜测题。根据第二段“For starters, sand can be a challenge because it has an uneven(不平坦的) surface.
根据第四段最后一句“If you want to run barefoot and as long as you run carefully enough into it, go for it! (如果你想赤脚跑步,只要你足够小心地跑,就去吧!)”可知,作者对赤脚跑步的态度是支持的。故选A项。
23.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其第一段“The beach may seem like an inviting place to run on a cool summer morning, but is running on the sand good for your body? It can be, but it’s important to be aware of the challenges that some beach runners experience before you get ready. (在凉爽的夏日早晨,沙滩似乎是一个诱人的跑步场所,但是在沙滩上跑步对你的身体有好处吗?这是可能的,但重要的是要意识到一些沙滩跑步者在你准备好之前所经历的挑战。)”,文章核心主题为“Running on the sand(沙滩跑步)”,故文章最有可能刊登在体育类杂志上。故选C项。
