Often, it’s a dog’s tale of loyalty that teaches us humans the meaning of the word. So many stories tell us about dogs that traveled great distances to be reunited with their owners. 6 Here are some tips that can help you.
Learn to communicate with your dog. 7 For example, learn to read its body language and behavior, and understand its likes and dislikes. This will help you communicate with your dog well.
8 This means that you should stay with your dog more often and do things it enjoys. In this way, you’ll get to know it better and improve your communication.
Go to your dog’s heart through its stomach. Remember the dog doesn’t know the monetary (钱的) value of food, so putting a little effort and smell into the food can make your dog happier. 9 Your dog’s depending on you for food will help you to draw its attention at all times.

Sending a note of congratulations is a wonderful way to let someone know you care about them. 11 , but these messages are an excellent way to stay in touch, develop a relationship, and build goodwill.
In informal circumstances, it’s all right to send a message of congratulations in an e-mail. 12 In a professional context, you might write a letter; in a more personal context, your messages should be hand-written on high-quality note paper.
The purpose of a note of congratulations is straightforward: to recognize and congratulate the recipient on some wonderful achievement, event, or milestone in her life. 13 Rather than wrong a generate note, really take some time to brainstorm your content to make your message special. What do you know about how hard the reader worked to achieve this milestone?
Share personal insights and memories, and your note will mean that much more. 14 People like to be praised for their general wonderfulness, but they especially like to know that you understand what they’ve been doing and effort they’ve made. 15 As you look over the draft, put yourself in the reader’s shoes and try to imagine how you would feel if you received such a note. Can you make it more personal, more meaningful? Revise your draft until you know you are sending a message you yourself would like to receive.
A.Appreciate what went into the achievement.
B.Choose general words to praise what they’ve achieved.
C.A note like this can make your reader feel appreciated.
D.It’s a good idea to write out a rough draft before you actually write on nice paper.
E.As technology develops, people can send messages of congratulations in various ways.
F.However, your message will mean much more to the recipient if you put it on paper.
G.As the pace of life has accelerated, people are sending fewer messages of congratulations.

Do you often go out for shopping? How to avoid germs (病菌) when shopping in the grocery store? 16 .
Firstly, go to the grocery store bright and early when they’re just opening. This might be your best option. By avoiding large groups of people, 17 , as the virus is mainly spread through close contact with other people.
One of the easiest ways to spread the virus is by touching a contaminated (被污染的) surface and then touching your face, eyes, nose, or mouth. 18 . This is a lot harder than it sounds, because people touch their faces more than 20 times in a single hour. While a mask can help prevent you from touching your mouth and nose, it is strongly recommended to wear one.
19 . This may be as simple as avoiding a crowded aisle (过道) and circling back a few minutes later. Since other shoppers might not be as mindful as you are about maintaining social distance, be polite in your request that they keep their distance with a polite “excuse me.”
Just as you’re being thoughtful about your own health, be thoughtful about the health of others, suggests Dr. Larkin. “ 20 , see if you can shop for them or teach them to use an online and delivery option,” she says. “Be patient and kind with one another, especially the workers keeping the stores open and functioning — and of course, if you are ill, please stay home and don’t expose others.”

F.Before you head out to one, you need some guidelines to ensure your safety
G.you decrease your risk of becoming infected

Family is the most important thing in the world. Sometimes it can be hard to get along with family members but you love them. How can you have a better relationship with your family members? 31
    ●Spend more time together.
Think about how much time you spend with your family already. Is it enough?
32 Arrange time when you all have freedom to do things together. Go on a picnic, visit a museum, go to a sports match and so on.
    ●Improve yourself.
Perhaps they complain about your grades, your attitude or your lack of goals; don’t assume it’s all nagging. Some of what they are saying is most likely for your own good, and they’re trying to protect you from life’s hardships and encourage you to be the best you can be. 33
●Be as independent as you can.
For example, don’t ask your father to wake you up in the morning. 34 Or, don’t expect your parents to help you out all the time, especially not as an adult.
    35

How to Learn a Language as an Adult
If you dream of learning a foreign language, your age does not disqualify you. Make the process more fun - and by extension, more successful-with these tips.
    Find your motivation.
Wish you had paid more attention in high school Spanish classes? 36 Perhaps all you wanted out of the class was a good grade, or to fulfill a graduation requirement. Linguists(语言学家)call these “extrinsic(外在的)motivators,”but the most successful language students are “intrinsically motivated, sincerely devoted to their own learning. 37 ,whether on a grand vacation in Spain or on your couch watching Spanish soap operas.
    Pick your tools.
38 , but you’ll figure out which resources work best for you. Mobile apps such as Duolingo and Babbel gamify your learning, so if you could easily spend hours playing on your phone, you’ll likely find these similarly addictive. And don’t forget books. McGraw Hill and Barron’s offer excellent textbooks with answer keys to let you see how you’re doing.
    39
Immerse (沉浸) yourself in your chosen language as much as you can. Watch movies or listen to songs, even if they are just on in the background. Periodically look around you and see how many things you can name in the language you’re studying. Or, better yet, label items around your home with those words. You’ll have no choice but to see them and, in very little time, learn them.
    Get social.
Practicing with other people helps solidify what you’ve already learned and make you more aware of which ideas you’re able to express. 40 ,though various websites and apps such as language exchange. com, Hello Talk, and Talk Abroad can connect you with some, either free or for a small fee.
    A.Dive in
    B.Just do it
    C.Consider why you didn’t
D.It might take some trial and error
E.You might as well practice on your own
F.So pick a language you are excited to use
G.They need not to be native speakers you chat with

Have you noticed that many of the clothes on the street look the same these days? 41 We interviewed some Brits in different parts of the country.
“Punks (庞克族) add zips (拉链). Skaters hang chains (链子) from their trousers. You don’t need money — you need imagination,” said Alexi, an art student from Aldershot.
42 You don’t have to actually make a T-shirt. You can buy a cheap one and add an image of your choice. “I used to draw on T-shirts. They looked a bit messy but sort of cool,” said John, 25, from Cheshire.
Everyone knows that students don’t have a lot of money. 43
“I used to make clothes sometimes when I was a student. Once, I found a pair of trousers in a shop that I really liked, but I couldn’t afford them. I bought some fabric (布料) in the same color and copied the trousers using my mum’s sewing machine (缝纫机). 44 ” said Corrine, 31, from Dundee.
45 “I buy stuff like jackets, trousers and dresses in second-hand shops. You can be sure you will always have something original as well as cheap,” said Helen, 26, from Nottingham.
A.I loved it when people didn’t believe I had made them myself.
B.So how do young people show their individual styles?
C.Buying second-hand clothes is also a fashion choice for many young Brits.
D.That doesn’t have to be a problem if you’ve got a bit of imagination.
E.With the click of a button, you can decorate a T-shirt with your own creative worlding.
F.Printing your own T-shirt is the easiest and most common way to show your individual style.
G.Even jeans and T-shirts can be stylish if you feel comfortable in them and choose the right ones.

How to Show Your Friends You Love Them
Psychologists have long thought that humans need meaningful social connections to survive. In fact, it’s connected to our mental and physical happiness. 46 . Here are some tips on how to strengthen the existing friendships in our lives.
Give them your skills and talents
Being generous (慷慨的) with your friends — sharing your time, attention or resources with them — is an easy way to keep your friendships. People want to be and stay friends with people who value them, and generosity is a way to express that. Think about what your skills and talents are. 47 .
    Shower them with admiring
We often think of admiring as the sort of love we show in romantic relationships. But admiring is more than holding hands and kissing. It’s about communicating love and appreciation. There are many ways you can show love to your friends. 48 . Tell them when you think of them in passing. These simple acts provide a layer of safety in the relationship.
    49
Think about how good it feels to tell a friend you secretly like a trashy TV show and hear them answer “me too!” We feel a deeper connection to our friends when our vulnerability (脆弱) is met with support. It means they accept us for who we really are, the good and the bad.
Don’t sweep your disagreements under the rug (毯子)
50 . People often see them as something that’s supposed to be fun and lighthearted, or less formal than romantic or family relationships, so they downplay problems when they arise. But being able to deal with disagreements with friends in a healthy way can strengthen your friendships. Try talking about them.
    A.Sing high praise for them
    B.Say your struggles and joys
C.Tell them how much they mean to you
D.It can be scary to be open with our feelings
E.And find a way to turn that into a generous act
F.It’s hard to deal with disagreements in friendships
G.Knowing that we have people to care for us makes us feel confident

    Travel with a Green Conscience(良知)
Travel is a form of consumption, from jet fuel to trash. It’s up to you to determine how much waste you will produce on your trip. For me, seeing the world has been an education on the environment and the challenges we face. 51 Ironically, travel has made me “greener”.
    ● Take public transport or carpool. Public buses or trains are an eco-friendly option for getting around your destination. Many youth hostels have carpool sign-ups for popular trips, which is an exciting way to meet fellow travelers. On my first day in a new city, I get a map and start walking! 52
    ● Be aware of food packaging and waste. As for packaging, to-go containers are made of Styrofoam, paper or plastic bags, which almost always end up in the garbage. Be conscious of your purchases. Street vendors (小商贩) sometimes offer delicious finger food, such as kabobs, which have little to no food packaging. Pack your own silverware(镀银餐具). 53 Every little bit helps.
    ● 54 As I backpacked through Thailand recently, I noticed that most of the trash littered on the beaches and in the streets was from tourists. It disgusted me. Why would you come all this way to see a beautiful beach, only to destroy it? I began picking up litter when I saw it and disposing of it properly. When I go on a hike and see trash on the trail, I pick it up. You can help compensate (补偿) for others by going the extra mile!
●Consider the sustainability of the ecosystem. Before traveling to a new country, do your research. Are the waters overfished? Do they import their meat from another country? How much meat, fish, grain does the average local eat? How much water, gas, electricity does the average local use? 55 Being eco-friendly will enhance your adventure.
    A.Refuse a straw(吸管) in your drink.
B.Be a part of the solution, not the problem.
C.Challenge yourself to live like the locals.
D.Witnessing other cultures has inspired me to reduce my carbon footprint.
E.My travel clothes are also quick-dry fabrics or wool, so they dry quickly.
F.Exploring on foot is great exercise and offers excellent people watching opportunities.
G.This information can help you make educated discussions on your consumption.

The hot summer months come with unbearable heat. We always want to turn on the air conditioner to cool down. 56 . But there are simple ways to cool down your home without using the air conditioner. Meanwhile, you can save money on your electric bill.
Block out the heat of the sun with your curtains
While this may seem to be almost too simple and too straightforward a method to keep your home nice and cool, it really does work. 57 . Therefore, blocking your windows with heavy shades or curtains will not only help you cut your indoor temperature down but it will also help you save upwards of 7% on your energy bills as well.
    58
Make sure that your doors are as air-tight as possible so that you can prevent cool air from escaping and hot air from entering your home at the same time. Also, make sure to keep the doors that face directions to the south and west closed during the day so you can prevent the hottest temperatures from the sun passing through to the rest of your house.
    Keep your body cool
59 . Drink ice cold water, keep cold packs pressed to your neck or your wrists, and do anything else you can do to keep your core body temperature down. That way, you won’t feel as worn out by the extreme heat during the summer months.
Consider a different type of air conditioner
When all else fails, a top rated window air conditioner unit can be the perfect budget solution. These inexpensive air conditioners work amazingly well to cool down one room of your home. 60 .
    A.That means high energy bills
B.Draw the hot air out of your home
C.Keep a better control of your entrance
D.Nearly 30% of all unwanted heat comes through your windows
E.You can take advantage of these lower degrees to cool down your house
F.Cooling yourself from the inside can affect how you feel on the outside
G.You can expect to pay only about $20 per month to use them 8 hours per day

My students frequently ask me how I planned out my career to become president of Fidelity Investments. I always tell them, “There was no grand plan; I backed into my career one step at a time.” In this tough economy and ever-changing world, it is more important than ever to smartly evaluate each step in your career. To prepare for whatever surprises lie ahead, try to make choices today that will maximize your options in the future. 61
Gaining transferable (可转移的) knowledge begins with the choices you make at school. You want your education to provide you with the necessary skills and expertise to succeed in a wide variety of jobs. 62 I favor those that involve extensive writing, rigorous analysis, or quantitative skills.
Once you have finished your formal education, search for jobs that will allow you to further expand your transferable knowledge—to help you find your next job. Let’s say you take a job putting together airplane leases. Within a few years, you could become the world’s expert on the subject. 63 By contrast, if you take a job that will expand your computer programming skills, you can greatly boost your options for later steps in your career.
Remember gaining transferable knowledge is only one piece of the puzzle. 64 As a saying goes, “Organizations don’t hire people. People hire people.” The more people you know, the more people will think of you when a job pops open—even when it is not publicly advertised.
Of course, you can build your network to some degree without changing jobs. 65 But this sort of event-driven networking pales in comparison with the deep bonds you can develop with your colleagues by working, communicating, and traveling with them.
A.You can make yourself more attractive.
B.Gain transferable expertise and form close bonds with your colleagues.
C.Your next step should help you expand your web of personal relationships.
D.This later helped me evaluate and start business units throughout the world.
E.You can attend conferences or participate in committees at trade associations.
F.This means that you need to make smart choices about the courses you will follow.
G.However, this narrow expertise probably won’t help you in any other line of work.

    Ways to improve your skin
    66
Healthy skin, hair and nails rely on a good supply of vitamins in your diet, and you’ll get the best possible mix if you pile a wide variety of fruit and vegetables on your plate. 67 , vitamin C helps even your skin color, and vitamin E helps protect your skin from the damage that causes ageing.
    Take in fat when necessary
Flaky(易脱皮屑的) skin on the arms and face is a sign that you could be low on fats. 68 . They will make your skin shine. A little olive oil or a small piece of butter with your vegetables will increase absorption(吸收) of skin-nourishing vitamins A and E.
    Put off the cover-up
69 , but don’t be too quick to apply sun scream. Allow your face and arms 15 minutes’ exposure(暴露) to the sun if you can to absorb the vitamin D, which helps protect the skin as well as supporting your immune system(免疫系统), before heading for the shade or covering up.
    Drink enough water
Keeping well hydrated(吸入水分) not only improves your skin, but also increases energy levels. 70 . Studies show some fruit and vegetables like cucumbers can hydrate the body twice as effectively as a glass of water.
    A.Pack in fruit and vegetables
    B.Some sun’s rays are healthy
C.Healthy fats are good for you
    D.Be careful about your cooking
E.Vitamin A is important for cell renewal and repair
F.So drink plenty, and aim to eat foods high in water
G.It’s important to protect the skin of the face and hands from the sun’s harmful rays

The oral exam (口试) is a long-held tradition in many schools and subjects. 71 Students must then answer properly, using materials they have learned in preparation for the exam. Showing plentiful knowledge of the subject results in passing the exam or an excellent grade.
72 As part of the completion of a program at the undergraduate or graduate levels, students might need to prove their knowledge and understanding of a subject area. Many science majors finish Bachelor’s studies with oral exams, or a particular program may require oral and written exams that show how a student has taken in all the materials learned in a four-year period. Usually study guides are available for these exams. 73
One valuable tip for students to succeed is to practice before the exam. 74 But by answering questions classmates or family ask them students can do as many practices as possible. On the day of the exam, students should dress plainly but respectfully, and in keeping with any dress requirements.
Students taking these exams should remember how much they have learned, which is hopefully quite a lot. 75 When waiting outside the test room, taking a deep breath and reminding themselves that the oral exam is a nice way to show off how much knowledge has been learned from teachers can help overcome stressful moments. Also, any other relaxation techniques that help can be used.
A.It raises questions to students in spoken form.
B.Behaving properly can earn students some favor.
C.They may not be able to predict all the questions.
D.Usually, students performing well are experienced.
E.Nervousness can even make the smartest student get stuck.
F.There are many examples in college where oral exams are used.
G.Therefore, prepared students tend not to be surprised by what they’re asked.

How to Turn Your Dreams into a Reality
Do you have dreams, visions or plans about things you’d love to have or achieve? Of course you do! We all do. Unfortunately, dreaming is the easy part. 76 The good news is that there are proven techniques that can get you from where you are to where you want to be. Follow this process to bring your dreams to fruition(实现):
Turn your dream into a goal.
When you have a goal, you have a true target. For a greater chance of success, your plan should have a deadline and it must be measurable. 77 Give yourself the gift of setting a deadline and things will start to happen. Make your goal as desirable as possible without being unrealistic. If you feel that your goal is unreasonable, it’s much more difficult to encourage yourself to actually pursue it.
    Prioritize(优先化)your goal daily.
78 You give instructions to your brain thousands of times a day. Let your mind know that your goal is something more important than “I feel like eating a ham sandwich” or “I need to stop at the grocery store on the way home”.
    79
Difficult goals can rarely be achieved alone: you’re likely to need some help and guidance. Look at the list you made and see what you already have in your life that could help you on your path.
    Track your progress.
Measure your progress each day. Use old fashioned paper and pencil or take advantage of the latest smartphone app. 80 You can only adjust your approach if you know how you’re doing. Consider making a chart if that’s applicable to your goal.
    A.Classify (将……分类) your available resources.
B.Make a list of negative associations.
C.Read and write your goal each day.
D.Turning those dreams into a reality is the challenge.
E.Tracking is critical to making continued progress.
F.It has been said that dreams are goals without a deadline.
G.So make a list of all the negative stuff that slip into your mind.

The first year of college is crucial in setting students up for success, laying a strong foundation for the rest of college and beyond. So how do you get through the first year? 81 , which I hope you find useful.
·Go to college with a purpose
Going to college takes time and money. Simply going because everyone told you to—without a clear end-puts you more at risk of not getting your degree. 82 . Pick your classes wisely and map out your path. Some of this is really basic, for example, if you know you need 120 credits to graduate.
    ·Make a connection with a staff member
The staff member can be an adviser, a librarian, a financial aid officer, and even an admissions counselor. Anyone connected with the college who you can lean on to learn the ropes of the institution is OK. Having one strong connection with the adult staff can make you feel engaged and supported throughout the college. 83 .
·Turn to your professor during office hours
So many students agree that office hours are terrifying. If you go to your professor’s office and talk to him or her, you will be more likely to find that your professor is a modest person and you can become friends. 84 , and ask what’s on an upcoming exam. 87 Actually, making links (连接) between what you are studying and your everyday life is not always easy. However, this is a skill that you can improve over time. You can spend some time using your imagination to build links between what you’re studying and your life.
Rewrite your notes. Some people may find it painful because they have already spent a fair amount of time taking notes in class. But it is helpful to your study. You can rewrite your notes by adding more information to the notes that you have taken during the class. Please remember not to just write down your notes mindlessly. 88 This is a good way to study because it requires you to think while you are rewriting your notes.
Plan your study time. Different people like to work and read at different parts of a day. Try to find out when you’re most productive. Some students study more effectively in the morning, while some may find it more beneficial (有益的) to study at night.   89
Have a good space to study. You need a desk or a table with a certain amount of space. Besides, you will also need good lighting. Students often say that listening to music, having the TV on, or keeping their phone out helps. 90 So you’d better study in a quieter space. However, a different situation is that you can listen to some relaxing music if you can’t study in silence.
    A.Understand what you are learning.
B.It’s actually not a reasonable schedule.
C.Instead, it requires preparation ahead of time.
D.Create connections with what you are studying.
E.It all depends on your schedule and habits.
F.You can use some learning materials like a textbook or a workbook.
G.But these things can take your attention away from study.

Millions of people enjoy watching Strictly Come Dancing on television every weekend. If you swing, and dance at home as the stars perform a jive or rumba, then why not give Latin dancing a go?
91 These are the cha-cha, samba, paso doble, jive and rumba. They are classed being different from ballroom dances, which include the waltz, foxtrot, quickstep and tango.
You dance with a partner and perform stops and routines that you both learn, set to a series of energetic music. 92 Being in hold means a dance couple hold hands and dance closer together. Start by joining a beginner’s class for your age at a local dance school. 93 Or ask the class organizer to help find a partner for you. Some beginners’ classes will be a mix of Latin and ballroom.
94 This can be fun and help you make friends and learn from others. The teacher will show simple steps and moves. You need to slowly put them together. 95 Dance studios have big mirrors on the walls so you can see how you’re doing, and special floors to help you move easily.
If you really enjoy it, you and your partner can have private lessons together with a teacher, and even enter local and national competitions once you’ve practised enough.
A.Cha-cha is a true Latin dance.
B.Latin dancing includes five main dances.

F.The class will probably have lots of first-time dancers sharing the floor with you.
G.Unlike in a ballroom dancing, Latin gives you more freedom to dance out of “hold”.

For most people, nothing is better than having an iced beer after you are back home in hot summer. 96 Why? Just for the sake of your own health and the happiness of your family. Now good news for you. From now on you needn’t feel guilty just because you love beer. On the contrary, the benefits of drinking beer are obvious. But there is still one IMPORTANT point I have to make clear. 97
    1. Beer reduces risk of heart disease You can easily reduce the risk of heart disease by 30% or more if you are one of the individuals who drink a pint of beer per day. The result is totally opposite if you drink too much beer. Be careful with your portions.
    2. 98
Beer prevents diabetes due to the alcohol content which increases insulin (胰岛素) sensitivity. Also, beer is rich in dissolvable fiber that is so needed if the individual suffers from diabetes.
Beer minimizes risk of cancer Xanthohumol (抗氧化剂黄腐酚) is found in beer, which is very important since it has anti-cancer properties. Drinking beer in moderation speeds up chemical reactions that keep off the risk of prostate cancer (前列腺癌) in males. 99 Strange? But it is true. That is because the drink contains components that decrease the risk of breast cancer.
    4. Beer manages blood pressure
According to the recent studies carried out by Harvard researchers, middle-aged women who drink beer in moderation were much less likely to develop high blood pressure. Other alcoholic drinks do not have the same properties.
    5. Beer treats dandruff (头皮屑)
100 The high content of vitamin B and yeast (酵母菌) will make your hair smooth and silky. Go and have a try.
You’ll be surprised to find the annoying dandruff finally gone.
    A.Beer lowers risk of diabetes.
    B.Beer improves your oily skin.
C.Believe it or not, women should also drink beer.

F.Remember it is how much beer you consume that matters to your health.
G.Beer is much healthier than all the shampoos and conditioners (护发素) that you see on the shelves in the supermarket or in advertisements.

Four Habits to Help You Succeed
Nobody would like to experience failure. We all want to succeed. For those who have tried and failed, success seems difficult to understand. 101
    Know your values.
102 Sit and reflect on what you value most. Pick a handful of things and write them down. Remind yourself of your values every day and reflect on whether you are honoring those values through your work.
    103
Choose one goal to start something large enough that will give you a sense of achievement while adjusting well to your values. If you want to achieve your goal, focus is the key here. The more focused you are on one goal, the higher chance you have of success.
    Set a time for success.
Set a date for success. Know when you hope to realize your goal. Keep it realistic while not giving yourself too much time. 104
Don’t give up because of failure.
Failure can’t be avoided when you take risks. 105 Many people are likely to give up far too early. Don’t fall into this trap (圈套)! Use failure, and treat it as a good thing and go on.
    A.Make the right decision.
B.Pick a goal and focus on it.
C.Push yourself to be courageous, and take the next step.
D.By setting a time limit, you are making the process realistic.
E.By its very definition, the hope to succeed means you are risking failure.
F.Finding your values is in line with creating motivation (动力).
G.I have made a list of four habits to help you set goals and realize them.

We feel angry or bad about the things we did or did not achieve, about the things that we cannot have, and many other things. It seems that everyone carries their own bad emotions. But neither guilt nor anger can help us. 106
These bad emotions don’t do anything good for us at all. So you might ask yourself — is it possible to put down this heavy burden and give yourself a break? It is quite possible. Start by actually looking at your feelings. 107 Why do we carry them for so long instead of putting them down? Can we live without them?
By thinking about our bad emotions, we can find healthy ways to deal with them. 108 They provide no relief. Instead, there are better ways to solve them. One of the best ways is forgiveness.
Forgiveness is a powerful tool. We should forgive ourselves first. We shouldn’t keep bad emotions inside. 109 This is not always easy. But when we learn to forgive ourselves, it becomes easier to forgive others as well.
There is nothing good about carrying years of emotional burdens. By forgiving ourselves and others, we can abandon our burdens and feel better about ourselves. The moment you do this, you will start to feel a lot lighter. Years of heaviness will be magically lifted. 110
A.How do they get inside of us?
B.How do you deal with bad emotions?
C.Unhealthy behaviors are not the way to do this.
D.Over time, they can be heavy weights on our shoulders.
E.Forgetting the past is a good way to deal with bad emotions.
F.We must also forgive others who have made us guilty or angry.
G.You’ll start to feel like you have more energy and you’ll be much happier with your life.

Why Do We Find It Hard to Say “No”?
As we all know, saying “no” to others is not easy at all. But sometimes we have to learn to say “no”. 111 Below are common reasons why people find it hard to say “no”:
    ● 112 You are a kind soul at heart. You don’t want to turn the person away and you want to help when possible, even if it may eat into your time.
●Afraid of being rude. I was brought up under the idea that saying “no”, especially to people who are older, is rude. This thinking is common in Asian culture, where face saving is important. 113
●Wanting to be agreeable. You don’t want to alienate (疏远) yourself from the group because you’re not in agreement. So you agree to others’ requests.
●Fear of conflict. 114 This might lead to an ugly confrontation (面对). Even if there isn’t, there might be disagreement which might lead to bad effects in the future.
    ● 115 Perhaps you are worried saying “no” means closing doors. For example, one of my friends’ wives was asked to work in another department in her company. Since she liked her team, she didn’t want to go. However, she didn’t want to say “no” as she felt it would affect her promotion chances in the future.
    A.Wanting to help others.
    B.Fear of losing chances.
C.Wanting to keep a good relationship.
D.I slowly realized I needed to learn to say “no”.
E.You are afraid the person might be angry if you refuse him/her.
F.It means not making others look bad or lose face.
G.To learn to say “no”, we have to first understand what’s stopping us from it.

Our lives are filled with storytelling, from the stories we tell our friends over dinner, to the ones we tell during toasts, at job interviews or on dates.
Stories make us laugh and feel like it’s going to be OK. 116 Improving our storytelling skills can lead to more meaningful connections. Here’s a guide on how to tell a story, from an idea to delivery.
    Select a meaningful story
Each of us has hundreds of stories we could tell. 117 You can always think back to moments in your life that really affected you in some way. When you think of a moment, ask yourself, “Why was that moment important to me? ”Then patterns of your story occur.
    Develop your story
Once you find the story you want to tell, think of some details and make it big. Where were you in that moment? How did it impact your life? What were the results? Then condense(浓缩)your story into one sentence that helps focus what it's really about. 118
    Figure out the structure
119 This will draw people in. From there, ask yourself if you'll tell your story in time order, or if you’ll start at the end and find your way back to the beginning, or if you want to tell it in a series of flashbacks(倒叙)instead of straight lines.
Before you deliver the story, practice, practice and practice again—but don't memorize it
It's natural to feel nervous before sharing a story aloud. Become very familiar with your story. Practice enough to be comfortable telling it from memory, but you don’t memorize it word for word.
If you go blank on stage, just think, “ 120 ”If you realize you didn’t set it up right, you can always say “Now, what I forgot to tell you about my mom is…” or “What you really need to know…”
    A.What happened next?
B.You’d better include emotions in a story.
C.How do we know which one to pursue?
D.A good story doesn’t have to be a long one.
E.A good and practical way is to start in the action of the story.
F.Stories also help us relate to each other and build community.
G.This will help you decide which details support your main point.

    How Not to Be Awkward
Not all of us are outgoing and ready to take the world by storm. Many among us are shy and may even feel kept apart from others. This usually happens when a person is still in his or her teen years and going through the socialization process. 121 Let’s try to find answers to the questions.
Stay in shape and dress up well
Sometimes, awkwardness could be due to being overweight. When you are large in size, you tend to get very self-conscious So, in order to avoid this, get into the habit of exercising every day 122 If you look as if you have just stepped out of a 1980’s film when actually it is 2011, there is no doubt that you are bound to feel awkward about yourself.
    Be optimistic
Another effective tip on how not to feel awkward is to always keep a smile on your face. 123 On the other hand, a smiling, happy and positive think person is appreciated by everybody So, smile when you meet acquaintances or even strangers, say a cheerful “Hi” and automatically some of your awkwardness will disappear completely!
    124

B.Learn how to end a conversation.
    C.Secondly, have appropriate clothes on.

G.Awkwardness could be because you do not have anything in common to talk about.

Is your glass half-empty or half-full? How you answer this age-old question about positive thinking may reflect your outlook on life, your attitude toward yourself, and whether you’re optimistic or pessimistic.
126 . Instead, it means that you approach unpleasantness in a more positive and productive way. You think the best is going to happen, not the worst.
You can learn to turn negative thinking into positive thinking. 127 —you’re creating a new habit, after all. Here are some ways to think and behave in a more positive and optimistic way Identify areas to change. If you want to become more optimistic and engage in more positive thinking, first identify areas of your life that you usually consider as negative. You can start by focusing on one area to approach in a more positive way. Think of a positive thought to manage your stress instead of a negative one.
128 . Occasionally during the day stop and evaluate what you’re thinking. If you find that your thoughts are mainly negative, try to find a way to put a positive spin on them.
Be open to humor. Give yourself permission to smile or laugh, especially during difficult times. Seek humor in everyday happenings. 129 .
Surround yourself with positive people. Make sure those in your life are positive, supportive people you can depend on to give helpful advice and feedback. Negative people may increase your stress level and make you doubt your ability to manage stress in healthy ways.

C.When you can laugh at life, you feel less stressed.

F.If you have a negative outlook, don’t expect to become an optimist overnight.
G.Positive thinking doesn’t mean that you ignore life’s less pleasant situations.

Everybody has gone through bad days, and some bad days feel like the world is on our shoulders and we just can’t bear the weight of it any longer. 131 Consider the following ways when you are experiencing the worst days of your life.
    Reflect.
When you have the worst day of your life, turning to reflection can remove any bad mood. 132 Others like to spend time writing in journals to express their feelings. The point of the quiet time is to release the bad mood of your day.
    Reach out to others.
When you are feeling like your world has ended, you need to reach out to others for help. Sometimes this might mean seeking professional help if you are in a state of depression (抑郁), or it might simply mean talking to a well-trusted friend. 133
    Change your mental state.
Sometimes it is just a matter of turning them into active thoughts. 134 Once you are able to do that, you will see that it really was not the worst day ever after all.
    135
To deal with the worst day, you can set goals for yourself to make changes, so that you will turn it into a growth experience which moves you forward rather than holds you back. What could you do differently if this situation might happen again? Setting goals makes you forward.
    A.Set goals.
    B.Love yourself
C.You will make it sooner or later.

Put yourself first. A lot of people forget to take care of themselves because of a busy work schedule, marriage, kids and family. But remember when you put yourself first, your happiness will shine through for sure. Taking time out for yourself daily improves your emotion and performance. 137
Exercise. 138 You are doing your body a service by working out. All it takes is 30 minutes of movement to gain those “feel-good chemicals” to better your mood(心情)and health.
Eat a balanced diet. There is a relationship between food and mood. What you put in your body determines how your body responds. 139 If you eat poorly, your organs(器官)will react negatively. As a result, you suffer from illnesses or have mood swings -you anger easily and find it hard to concentrate.
140 Having a good support system is known to help improve our health and happiness. Unfortunately, not everyone means well. So it’s important to know that and make it your priority only to allow people beneficial to your mental health in your life.

F.Hobbies can help reduce stress and put our focus on what is fun and different.
G.This way, you can not only be your best self but possibly take better care of people around you.

    How to improve reading efficiency
Make sure of your purpose of reading.
141 Most people read for two main reasons: pleasure or knowledge. Being specific and clear about your reading purpose not only helps you to avoid books that you don’t need to read, it also reminds you the book is important to you. This encourages you to keep reading and complete the book faster.
Read only what you are attracted to.
Whether you are reading fiction or nonfiction, it’s important to enjoy what you read. Your friends may recommend books that they love, but those books might not necessarily be the ones you enjoy. 142
Give up books that you don’t enjoy.
You may have selected books that match your purpose. You may have selected books that you are attracted to. But when you are reading them, there may still be some books that you won’t enjoy reading. 143 Remember reading shouldn’t make you feel annoyed.
    144
Having a reading goal helps you figure out how much reading you need to do in a week or even a day.
Give yourself a deadline to finish each book.
Before you read each book, ask yourself when you need to finish this book. What I find interesting is that I tend to read books that I borrow from libraries faster than the books I bought. 145 I don’t need to return those books. When you don’t set a deadline to finish your book, there isn’t a sense of urgency. And when something isn’t urgent, you tend to slow down.
    A.Set a reading goal.
B.Understand each word of the sentence.
C.Read books which you are interested in.
D.Reading is the most important way to get knowledge.
E.The reason is that the books I bought don’t have a due date.
F.Before you start reading, ask yourself why you are reading this book.
G.Whenever you realize that you aren’t enjoying the book you are reading, give it up.

How can we live more meaningfully? To find out, I spent five years interviewing hundreds of people and reading through thousands of pages of psychology, neuroscience and philosophy. 146 The first pillar is belonging. Belonging comes from being in relationships where you’re valued and where you value others as well. But some groups and relationships deliver a cheap form of belonging. 147 It lives in moments among individuals, and you can choose to cultivate belonging with others.
For many people, belonging is the most essential source of meaning, those bonds to family and friends. 148 Now, finding your purpose is not the same thing as finding that job that makes you happy. The key to purpose is using your strengths to serve others.
The third pillar of meaning is about stepping beyond yourself. 149 Transcendent states are those rare moments when you’re lifted above the busy daily life.
Now, the fourth pillar of meaning, I’ve found, tends to surprise people. The fourth pillar is storytelling. The story you tell yourself is about yourself. 150 It helps you understand how you became you. But we don’t always realize that we’re the authors of our stories and can change the way we’re telling them. We can edit, interpret and retell our stories.
A.But true belonging springs from love.
B.But it is in a completely different way: transcendence.
C.We’re constantly creating our lives, adding to our story.
D.For others, the key to meaning is the second pillar: purpose.
E.Bringing it all together, I found four pillars of a meaningful life.
F.Creating a narrative from the events of your life brings clearness.
G.And the studies show that people who have meaning in life live longer.

13.根据前文“The purpose of a note of congratulations is straightforward: to recognize and congratulate the recipient on some wonderful achievement, event, or milestone in her life.”(贺信的目的很简单:表彰和祝贺收信人在她生命中取得的一些了不起的成就、事件或里程碑。)
