Educators and business leaders have more in common than it may seem. 1 . Technology companies have a great interest in developing a workforce with the STEM skills needed to grow the company. How can they work together to achieve these goals? Play may be the answer.
2 , but the reality is that STEM skills are enhanced and more relevant when combined with traditional, hands-on creative activities. That is why technology companies are partnering with educators to bring back old fashion play.
Many experts argue that the most important skills aren’t related to specific technologies, but to creativity skills like imagination, problem-solving, and the ability to experiment and take risks. 3 . High-tech industries have found that their best overall problem solvers were master tinkerers (鼓捣小玩意的人) in their youth.
There are cognitive benefits of doing things the way we did as children — building something, tearing it down, then building it up again. Research shows that given 15 minutes of free play, four-and five-year-olds will spend a third of this time engaged in spatial, mathematical, and architectural activities. 4 .
If play and building are critical to 21st century skill development, then that’s really good news for two reasons: Children are born builders, makers, and creators, so fostering 21st century skills may be as simple as giving kids room to play, tinker and try things out; secondly, it doesn’t take 21st century technology to foster 21st century skills. This is especially important for under-resourced schools and communities. 5 . And anyone, anywhere, can do it.
A.Focusing on STEM skills, like robotics or coding, is important
B.Educators seek advice from technology companies to achieve teaching goals
C.These are skills acquired when kids play
D.Children acquire the skills needed for 21st century by engaging in activities involving specific technologies
E.Teachers want to prepare students for a successful future
F.Taking whatever materials are handy and tinkering with them is a simple way to engage those important “maker” skills
G.This type of play helps children discover and develop key principles in math and geometry

At times, talking to kids can feel like learning a foreign language. Unfortunately, there’s no handy phrasebook or translation app that can make you sound friendly and firm at the same time. Don’t worry. We’ve put together plenty of conversational tips, tricks, and ideas, so you can have an open and honest chat with any kids in your life.
Sit or kneel at their level.
6 Even if you’re keeping things light and friendly, a child might feel frightened if you’re towering over them. Instead, grab a seat or take a knee near the child, so they don’t have to look up at you. 7
Let the child speak without interrupting.
Interrupting will only shut down your conversation. Think of it this way—if you were sharing a really exciting story with a friend, would you want them to interrupt and talk over you? 8 Give children plenty of time to share what’s on their mind, even if they’re having some trouble coming up with the right words. Once they’ve finished sharing, feel free to reply and comment on whatever they shared.
Offer lots of options to comfort your child.
9 The more you want them to finish the task to your heart’s content, the more they may feel controlled by your command. So, break a task or command into a fun “this or that” scenario(设想). Your child will be happier to play along when they feel in control of their decisions and routine. Instead of telling your child to pack their lunch, ask if they’d like a ham cheese. Sometimes, there might not be any practical options to offer. That’s okay! 10
A.Just offer alternatives when you can.
B.The same principle applies to kids, too.
C.Some kids don’t respond well to orders.
D.Sometimes, kids just want a listening ear.
E.This can help take the edge off your conversation.
F.Lowering yourself makes you a lot more approachable.
G.Let the children be aware of the value of time and care from others.

While friendships are one of the most important connections a person can come across, friends may not always be part of our lives. 11
    You Outgrow Each Other
12 These connections are mostly established on common ground: liking the same television shows, or enjoying similar kinds of music. There are times when companions grow out of each other and friendships die away gradually. What initially began as common ground has developed into different things between friends.
    A Fight Breaks Things Up
While differences are encouraged, there are some disagreements that may not be resolved so easily. Friends sometimes hold different views on matters that are essential to their ways of life. 13 Likewise, where a betrayal (背叛) takes place, the friendship may be unable to survive the pain.
    Distance Complicates Things
As everyday life goes on, moving away for work, marriage and other reasons can put some tension on the friendship. Honestly, there is no shortage of love between friends that find themselves in different parts of the world. 14 Eventually, friendships may end when too much time has passed and too many events may have occurred between once loved friends.
When you lose a friend, it’s easy to get caught up in the pain of loss. Letting yourself feel the impact of a lost friend is admirable and even advisable. 15 Instead, learn to treasure other friends present in your life. Show your appreciation to those who invest efforts in your growth and happiness, spend time with them and then build your friendship.
A.However, this should not last long.
B.Here are reasons why a friendship may wind up.
C.That may prevent the friendship from progressing.
D.A friendship usually begins with innocent intentions.
E.Learning about life with loss can put you in a better state.
F.How to manage a friend’s absence is of great importance.
G.And yet this distance can contribute to reduced communication.

How similar are language and music?
Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. 16 Both language and music play a huge role in our culture and here are some of their similarities.
Both language and music have a writing system.
In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes to keep a record of music. Musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music. 17 By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. We can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago.
    18
You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language he uses. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.
    Both share emotion.
19 Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. 20 I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics.
    A.Both are various with culture.
B.Both are expressive around the world.
C.How do you know that I am angry?
D.We use language to express our thoughts.
E.So just as you read English, you can read music.
F.Similarly, music is also part of many people’s lives.
G.In contrast, you probably also listen to sad music when you are feeling down.

You’re going along, producing and feeling creative, but suddenly, you run out of ideas. You’re stuck. Maybe it’s in how you present your products and services to your potential clients, or maybe it’s the products and services themselves. 21
Sometimes stress and anxiety can get in the way of creativity. And when you get even more stressed because you can’t come up with new ideas, you make the block even stronger. Now’s the time to relax and reduce your stress. Try yoga, or get some exercise. 22 Whatever it takes. Sometimes it takes just a little bit of stress relief before you suddenly get the old creative juices flowing again.
Sometimes the best thing you can do to become creative again is to walk away. 23 So walk away. Take some time off and enjoy life. Let your brain take a rest from trying to figure it all out, and experience something new. You may come back with a wealth of new ideas.
24 What are people in your field talking about? What are the biggest topics and the most significant concerns for your potential clients? Finding out what these issues are can stimulate you to think of your business, your products, your services, and your presentation in a new way.
Ideas can hit you at any time, in any place. You never know where you’ll get a fantastic idea, and you don’t want to take chances on forgetting something fantastic. I keep a pocket-sized Moleskine notebook with me at all times so I can jot down ideas at a moment’s notice. I occasionally have to pull my car over on the side of the road for a moment to write down an article title or a new product I want to create. 25 Therefore, the best course of action is always to be prepared.
    A.Keep your own creativity flowing.
B.Staring at the problem won’t help you.
C.Hey, if football is your thing, go do that.
D.Creativity can hit when you least expect it.
E.Sometimes it’s as simple as looking at your own industry.
F.Either way, you are in need of help so as to get out of the block.
G.We’ve all had moments when we feel abandoned by our creativity.

As Plastic Chokes the Ocean, Technology Can Help
Some 8 million tons of non-recyclable (不可回收的) plastic end up in the ocean each year. At an alarming rate, the seas may have more plastic than fish by the middle of the century. 26
Require a global solution to a global problem. 27 The developed countries and most of developing countries show their leadership in this process by setting goals, encouraging other member states, and offering support for poor countries.
28 Although they are helpful to protect clean water and air, as it is known, non-recyclable plastic is widely used in the markets. Therefore, non-recyclable plastic still can be bought in our daily life. Its disappearance needs much more time and efforts.
Pay more attention to the new studies on plastic and technologies. Some of researchers are aiming to make replacements for plastic. 29 For example, “interceptors” can remove river pollution before it reaches the ocean.
Expect more responsibility from manufacturers. 30 As a start, they should be encouraged to simplify complex packaging. And their working with world governments will support poorer nations to improve waste collection and landfill (垃圾场) management.
The world doesn’t have enough time in trying to solve the problem. The sooner these efforts start, the better.
    A.Strengthen the connection between countries.
B.Others are doing more research on new technologies.
C.Nearly 200 countries agreed to ban plastic pollution.
D.Establish production limits for non-recyclable plastic.
E.They should care about different laws on plastic in the poorer countries.
F.They are well aware of how to reduce the harms their products cause.
G.Thus it’s necessary to take immediate action to stop that.

The sport with the funny name that’s sweeping America
An estimated 4.8 million people in the US now play pickleball. 31 , making it the country’s fastest-growing sport. Here’s something about the emerging sport with the out-way name.
    What’s pickleball?
Pickleball is a mashup of tennis, ping pong and badminton that can be played indoors or outdoors, by single players or in pairs. It’s played on a court with a low net — 34 inches high at its center. 32 . Players use a perforated plastic ball and wooden paddles that are about twice the size of ping pong paddles.  The goal is to hit the ball over the net — but within the boundaries of the court — and prevent your opponent from hitting it back.
How did it get its name?
Accounts vary on the name’s origin. 33 . One story says the sport was named for a family dog named Pickles, who loved chasing the plastic ball and running off with it. The game ball sort of became Pickles’ ball — hence the name.
    Why is it so popular?
34 . Firstly, it’s fun and social, and the rules are easy for beginners to learn. Secondly, players can pick up the sport in a single session and don’t need any expensive equipment or special clothes — just sneakers and comfortable clothing. What’s more, the small court means little running around. This has made the sport especially popular with older players whose stiff backs or aching knees make it harder for them to move around larger tennis courts. 35 .
A.But one thing’s for sure: There were no pickles involved
B.Participation has increased by 39.3% in the past two years
C.The pickleball popularity has been fueled by several factors
D.And today, partly because of the pandemic, it’s having a moment
E.The pickleball court is the same size as a doubles badminton court
F.It’s played in 70 countries and growing, according to the International Federation of Pickleball
G.The demand for safe, distanced activities during the pandemic has also helped fuel the sport’s growth

How to Remove Permanent Marker from Plastics
Removing permanent marker from plastic is easy, but you also have to be careful. Some of the more effective cleansers, such as acetone, can also ruin plastic surfaces, especially if they are left on the plastic for too long. This article will show you several ways to remove permanent marker stains (污渍) from plastic surfaces. 36
Removing stains with dry erase marker
Find a dry erase marker. The color does not matter, although you may want to consider using a darker-colored marker. 37 And it is safe to use on smooth, plastic surfaces. It may not be as effective on textured (不平的) surfaces, however; instead, consider using some rubbing alcohol or baking soda and toothpaste. Wipe the area clean with a soft cloth. The permanent marker stain should come off with the cloth and dry erase marker.
Removing stains with a magic eraser
Purchase a magic eraser sponge (海绵). You can find them in the cleaning department of most grocery stores. 38 Be sure that you purchase a plain magic eraser, without any additives, such as bleach. Cut the sponge into smaller pieces. This will make it easier to work with. 39 Dip the sponge in some water. If the stain is particularly tough, consider using rubbing alcohol instead. Do not press too hard. It may rake anywhere between live to ten minutes before you start seeing any results.
    Removing stains with alcohol
Find some rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is safe to use, but you may need to use it a few times before you get the stain off. 40 Try to get something that is 90% or higher.
A.They are white and shaped like bricks.
B.A small amount will also go a long way.
C.Here are the benefits and drawbacks of each.
D.The higher the percentage, the more effective it will be.
E.This method works exceptionally well on dry erase boards.
F.Rub the stain with the sponge using circular movements until it is gone.
G.Keep in mind, however, that some stains may be impossible to remove completely.

When we speak of a person being independent, what do we mean? Usually, we take it to mean that as a person achieves adulthood, they become capable of being independent. 41 We all know of youngsters who can live an independent life from a relatively young age. We also know of those who do not attain independence until they are well into adulthood. Here are reasons why achieving independence is essential.
Being independent will build your confidence.
Every life and motivational speaker stresses the importance of confidence when you seek success in your life. 42 Having confidence gives you a positive outlook on life. You are going to be willing to do things on your own, without needing support or approval from others.
    43
If you are dependent on other people, your ability to make clear, precise decisions is severely affected. You will always have to consider the effects that your choices will have on those other people. Being independent means you can make decisions without fear of the consequences.
    Independence leads to personal improvement.
When you are independent, you can lead a freer social life, pursue the career that you want, and undertake activities that appeal to you. You can meet new friends, try new things, and follow up on new opportunities. 44
    Independence leads to broader horizons.
You will be able to take trips to exotic destinations, meet people with different social and moral beliefs, and gain more extensive knowledge. 45 It might have positive effects on many aspects of your life, like the way you approach decision-making, or, on a simpler level, your attitude to food.
    A.Emotional independence makes you happier.
B.In turn, this will lead you to think differently.
C.Becoming independent is not the same for everyone.
    D.Being independent makes you a better decision-maker.
E.All of these will lead to you becoming more outstanding.
F.Many challenging situations will arise throughout our lives.
G.The more independent you are, the more confident you will become.

Does speaking on the phone make you nervous?
Speaking with people on the phone is becoming rare these days. Many people prefer to use email or messaging apps when they need to communicate with someone. Sometimes, though, making a phone call is unavoidable. This simple act can actually be an unpleasant experience for some people. 46 If this sounds familiar to you, you might be one of them who suffer from telephobia—the fear of speaking on the phone.
Telephobia is a form of social anxiety, even people who feel perfectly comfortable in social situations may also experience telephobia. When speaking face to face, we give off lots of facial cues(暗示) that help each other follow the conversation. 47 Very often the idea of speaking on the phone makes some people so frightened that they will freeze up or lose control of the conversation. However, there are things that they can do to ease this fear.
One thing that those with telephobia can do before making a call is smile. 48 It won’t get rid of the anxiety altogether, but it will take the edge off it. Similarly, imagining how the call will go before you make it can also help things go more smoothly. 49 That will make you feel less nervous and may help you predict any possible problems.
50 Well, you don’t always have to pick up the phone. There’s nothing wrong with calling the person back later when you feel more comfortable. So the next time your phone starts ringing, remember—speaking on the phone doesn’t have to make you nervous. The important thing is to be aware of your fear and take steps to deal with it.
A.This is not the case over the phone.
B.Their hearts may race at the very thought.
C.What are the basic rules of making phone calls?
D.Just run through a positive conversation in your head.
E.What should you do when you’re faced with receiving a call?
F.It may sound silly, but smiling can help you feel more relaxed.
G.Remember to smile politely when you are introduced to someone.

Visiting a completely new place can bring a lot of excitement, but it can also be a bit scary and confusing. With the right preparation, however, your first international travel shouldn't be all too stressful. 51
    Secure and double-check your passport
52 If you don't have one yet, make sure you apply for it before your expected departure. Don't book any flights yet as some international flights will require you to enter your passport number when booking a ticket.
    53
If you're not familiar, a visa is a document issued by the country or countries you're traveling to, giving you permission to visit for a specific number of days. If you visit a country, make sure that you secure it before your flight. If you fail to do so, you won't be allowed to board the plane.
Make sure that you can access your money overseas
Thankfully, you don't need to carry cash or traveler's cheques when traveling overseas. Check with your bank and see if you need to set up a travel alert while abroad so your bank knows when and where you're traveling. 54 Besides, it's important to know the fees and costs so you won't lose too much money on extra charges.
Plan your clothes and pack early
Men pack their clothes at the very last minute, and this is not very ideal. Most of the time, people tend to forget things when they pack right before a flight. 55 Either you have to spend money to replace it or go completely without it when you leave.
    A.Apply for the document
B.Obtain a visa before on board
C.Then check whether your credit card will be accepted overseas.
D.Your passport is the most crucial thing you need when traveling to another country.
E.To help make sure that your trip will go smoothly, follow these essential steps below.
F.Forgetting an item can be very stressful especially if you can't return to get that item anymore.
G.You can also ask them about international fees and partner banks in the country you'll be visiting.

Boosting your emotional intelligence quotient, or EQ, involves identifying and managing your own emotions, as well as evaluating and controlling the way in which you react to those of others. 56 It can also improve your relationships with loved ones and your social interactions. Here are some tips you can use to start improving your EQ.
    ● Identify your emotions.
Identifying your emotions takes practice and is an important foundational step in building emotional intelligence. Regularly recognizing and naming your emotions throughout the day is a good way to develop your EQ. 57 You could even go a step further, and try to determine how the presence of certain emotions affects your behavior and productivity.
    ● Consider your response.
58 Taking responsibility for the way you behave towards others and, possibly even more importantly, how you treat yourself, is a crucial aspect of emotional intelligence.
    ● 59
Empathy is a cornerstone of EQ. It is defined as the ability to identify and share the thoughts, feelings or emotional state of another person. A little empathy goes a long way. It is important to demonstrate empathy towards people other than just those with whom you find it easy to get along.
    ● Listen actively.
Engage in the moment and acknowledge what other people are saying. 60 Active listening involves asking open-ended questions such as ‘When?’ ‘How?’ ‘Do you mean...?’ or ‘Could you tell me a bit more about that?’. Active listening also calls for avoiding questions that would get only a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response.
Developing your emotional intelligence can not only help you reduce your stress, but also leave you with more time to connect with, and continuously improve your relationships with, those around you.
    A.Show your care.
B.Put yourself in other people’s shoes.
C.You just don’t know what they might be going through.
D.You must remember you can choose how you react to a situation.
E.Besides, trying to identify exactly what you are feeling can do the trick.
F.Try to avoid just waiting for your turn to talk about yourself and your story.
G.Exploring and improving these skills can help you to succeed in your career.

All parents have sky-high hopes for their children. We want them to be confident and satisfied. What can parents do to help their kids grow up to lead happy lives? Experts advise:
61 . A study found that students whose parents paid attention to their abilities were far more likely to do well in school-and in life-than students whose parents didn’t show such support. So celebrate your kids’ achievements, no matter how small they are.
Praise their efforts. 62 . Still, they are praised for trying their best. Ten-year-old April Cutler, for example, has had trouble with math since the second grade. “She usually gets C’s on her report card, but last year she was determined to get A’s and worked hard at it,” says her mom. “When the first grading period ended, April was disappointed when she got a B in math,” Lueille continues. “But my husband and I told her we were very proud that she’d improved. That inspired her to try even harder. 63 .”
Let them make decisions and mistakes. 64 . And allowing kids to make wrong decisions-so long as doing so won’t harm them-helps kids learn from their mistakes.
Encourage them to solve their own problems. As they grow, children need practice in communicating and standing up for themselves. One of the best places to learn these skills is at home. 65 the next time your child runs to tell you that her brother is blaming her.
    A.Applaud their achievements
B.Step back and let them work it out
C.She got a B plus for the next period
D.Kids won’t always come out on top
E.Setting too high a goal makes kids feel discouraged
F.Give advice on how to help kids become mature
    G.Making his/her own decisions builds his/her confidence

Studying smarter, not longer, matters now more than ever, with students in many countries having to manage their time and study more on their own. 66 The good news: Science points to ones that really work.
Use pictures. Pay attention to drawings, graphics, chart and other visual aids in your class materials, psychologist Mark McDaniel says. “ 67 And if there aren’t pictures, creating them can be really, really useful.”
Find examples. Abstract concepts can be hard to understand. It tends to be far easier to form a mental image if you have a concrete example of something, psychologist Cynthia Nebel says. For instance, sour foods usually taste that way because they contain an acid. 68 But if you think about a lemon or vinegar, it’s easier to understand and remember that acids and sour go together.
69 Psychologist Nate Komell “definitely did cram (临时抱佛脚)” before big tests when he was a student. He still thinks it’s a good idea to study the day before a big test. But research shows it’s a bad idea to cram all your studying into that day. Instead, allow time between study sessions and you’ll learn and remember material better.
Dig deeper. It’s hard to remember a string of facts and figures if you don’t push further. Ask why things are a certain way. How did they come about? Why do they matter? Psychologists call this elaboration. “It’s asking a lot of how and why questions about it,” Nebel says. 70
Try adding just one new study skill each week or two. It may seem odd at first. But, by the time week two rolls around, it becomes a normal thing.
    A.Reread books and notes.
    B.Space out your studying.
C.They really boost your memory of the material.
D.Yet many students have never learned those skills.
E.In other words, don’t just accept facts at face value.
F.On its own, that concept might be hard to remember.
G.It’s like telling students to learn to swim by “just swimming.”

People speak jokingly about being “addicted” to junk food, but that comparison might be more accurate than previously thought. Yes, we’re often powerless against the delights of impulse buys (冲动购物) at the checkout counter or the charms of the office selling machine. But we’re all perfectly reasonable people, right? 71
    You’re a human being.
It’s inborn that people like junk food. We’re born with a liking for sweetness. 72 Junk foods have figured out how to give us more and more of exactly the tastes we’re born wanting.
    You have taste buds (味蕾)
73 They are visible as small bumps on your tongue, the roof of your mouth and throat. Each of these bumps holds up to 700 taste buds, and each one of those has as many as 80 specialized taste-receptor cells. So here you are, with all this taste-sensing equipment and with a brain that’s designed to encourage you to eat the foods you need to thrive.
You are, literally, an “eating machine”
Your ancestors had probably lost at least a few of their teeth by the time they reached adulthood. 74 Not only are you probably more efficient at eating than they were, but food producers are smoothing the way down your gullet with foods that have what’s called “disappearing caloric density.”
    75
Blame your mom and that attractive layer cake she baked every year on your birthday. Blame those junior high sleepovers when everyone bonded over pizza. Junk foods tend to be associated with some of the most relaxed and celebratory times of our lives. When we associate a food with something positive, we’re more likely to want to eat it.
A.Why is this happening to us?
    B.You have happy childhood memories.
C.Sugar has been shown to activate our brains
D.In fact, you have as many as 10,000 of them.
E.Then by about age 6 months, we acquire a liking for salt.
F.You are too busy to bother with fresh food and its many needs.
G.However, you’ve got close to the full set of 32, brushed and shining teeth.

Accents are an important part of our identity. An accent gives clues about who we are, and the community we belong to or wish to belong to. 76
What is the difference between accents and pronunciation?
Accents are about localized ways of speaking a language. A French person may speak English flawlessly (完美无瑕地), just with a French accent. 77 However, pronunciation is something that — as a learner— you can get right or wrong. If your pronunciation is correct, you can communicate effectively with others whatever your accent is.
    78
If you think back historically people were much more localized with generation after generation of families living in the same small villages and few people traveled out of that area during their lifetimes. So over many generations differences in accent emerged and became very distinct to particular areas. Mountainous villages that are not easily accessible often develop very strong and distinctive accents.
How important is it to get an accent right?
If you’re moving to a certain part of a country, you might want to integrate better with your new community. 79 That’s because it shows a sense of belonging to the community you are trying to fit in with.
    How to improve your accent?
80 And then learners should consider which sounds exist in the language you’re learning and then spend some time in front of the mirror practicing moving your tongue and mouth to get those new and different sounds. And learners should be aware of stress and tone, which can sometimes even change the meaning of words.
A.Where do accents and pronunciation emerge?
B.They’re also important for those learning a new language.
C.Try to adapt your speech to sound more like the locals’ speech.
D.The best way is to learn the specific accent of that region.
E.Where do different types of accents come from?
F.That’s fine because there is no wrong or right with an accent.
G.Learners should first think about which sounds don’t exist in your native language.

A school girl writes to me and says that a girl named Jane just transferred (转学) to their class and became her deskmate. 81 But Lucy and she have been friends for a long time, and they enjoy doing things together. She asks me what she should do. The following is what I say to her:
This is quite a compliment (祝贺).
82 Imagine if you were new in a class and hadn't made friends yet. I knew I would be very nervous and a bit shy to reach out. This is why when I was younger and there was a new student in my school or my class, my friends and I would introduce ourselves and get to know him or her. It's important to put yourself in the other person's shoes.
It's really nice that she felt comfortable enough to ask you to be a friend. Are you worried that Lucy will be upset or that being friends with the new girl in class will take away the time you spend with her? 83
You can introduce the new girl to Lucy as well. If you are worried this might change things between you and Lucy, I don't think it has to be a bad thing.
While sometimes adding another person to your circle of friends can change the dynamic (活力), chances are that you all get along really well. 84 In fact, it’s important to always try to make new friends.
Reaching out to someone when they are in an uncomfortable situation is also a sign of kindness and empathy (同感). 85 And you never know-you just might make a lifelong friend.
A.Being the new kid can be tough.
    B.You can't agree on everything.
C.If so, I don't think you should worry.
D.Having a new friend doesn't mean you lose your old one.
E.You will have a positive influence on your other classmates.
F.You should have a heart-to-heart talk with your old friend.
G.Jane doesn't have friends in the class and wants to make friends with her.

How can you delete your bad behaviors and stick to good ones instead? 86
Choose a substitute for your bad habit. You need to have a plan ahead of time for how you will respond when you face the stress or boredom that leads to your bad habit. What are you going to do when you get the urge to smoke? What are you going to do when Facebook is calling to you to delay? 87
Cut out as many triggers (诱因) as possible. If the first thing you do when you sit on the couch is pick up the TV remote, then hide the remote in a closet in a different room. 88 Make it easier on yourself to break bad habits by avoiding the things that cause them.
Join forces with somebody. Maybe you “quit smoking”, but you kept it to yourself. Instead, pair up with someone and quit together. The two of you can hold each other accountable and celebrate your victories together. 89 Surround yourself with people who live the way you want to live. You don’t need to abandon your old friends, but don’t underestimate the power of finding some new ones.
90 See yourself buying healthy food or waking up early. Whatever the bad habit is that you are looking to break, visualize yourself quitting it, smiling, and enjoying your success. See yourself building a new identity.
Breaking bad habits takes time and effort. You might not have success right away, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have it at all.
    A.Visualize yourself succeeding.
B.Imagine you can make it in time.
C.Here are some ideas for breaking your bad habits.
D.Your environment makes your bad habit easier and good habits harder.
E.If you eat cookies when they are in the house, then throw them all away.
F.Knowing that someone else expects you to be better is a powerful motivator.
G.Whatever it is, you need to have a plan for what you will do instead of your bad habit.

Don’t you think walking in the city is very different from walking in the park? A small psychology study suggests urban environments can slow your step and possibly increase your mental load. 91 . It can ease your mind and quicken your pace. The findings show that natural settings may potentially reduce cognitive tiredness and improve reaction times straight away. 92
The first of the two experiments in the new study focused on people’s way of walking and cognitive load. During this trial, participants were fitted with sensors and a dozen motion control cameras were set up to watch them repeatedly walk down a 15-metre room at their natural speed. The wall opposite them showed an image of either a nature scene or a city scene. 93 On the whole, when walking in city settings, people reported that they felt more uncomfortable and they walked at a slower pace, indicating a higher cognitive load.
94 Participants were asked to distinguish between basic visual shapes on the computer while also in the presence of a natural or urban image (the same ones from the first experiment).
Measuring reaction times in both natural and urban settings, the team found results to support their idea. In urban environments, participants were slower in distinguishing between simple shapes. 95 Our brains take longer to process. However, more research is needed to prove that idea.
A.A walk through nature does the opposite, though.
B.Nature influences us in many ways.
C.Different approaches are employed in the separate experiment.
D.They said they couldn’t concentrate properly after walking.
E.After each, participants were asked to rate their discomfort.
F.The second dug into some higher-level cognitive processes.
G.The reason is that urban environments are more distracting.

Recent research indicates that the ability to remain calm under pressure has a direct link with work performance. Talent Smart has conducted research on over a million people and found that 90% of top performers are skilled at managing their emotions in times of stress. 96 .
Research conducted at the University of California found that people who focused daily on feeling grateful for what they’d experienced improved moods, energy, and physical health. 97 , with them focusing the brain’s attention on something that is completely stress-free. Any positive thought will act to keep the brain's attention away from stress.
Taking regular time off to relax can help keep stress under control. Technology enables constant communication and the expectation that you should be available all the time. 98 . Turning off work emails and mobile phones provides a break from these possible sources of stress.
99 , so an adequate amount of sleep is essential. During sleep the brain ‘recharges’, organizing the day’s memories and storing or abandoning them, so that you wake up clear-headed. Self-control, attention and memory are all reduced without enough sleep.
The easiest way to make stress off-and-off lies in something that people do every day: breathing. The practice of focusing on breathing teaches the brain to let go of stressful thoughts for a while. Close the door and just sit in a chair and breathe. 100 , which prevents the mind from wandering.
A.We should learn to take control
    B.Sleep shortage raises stress levels
C.In addition, positive thoughts help reduce stress
D.However, this exposes people to stress more frequently
E.The goal is to spend the entire time focusing only on breathing
F.In the following section four effective ways to manage stress will be outlined
G.A big step in managing stress involves controlling your reactions to situations

We've all come across a bump(凸起)in the road. What sets people apart is how they react to that bump. Are you one to lose control in disappointment? Or do you catch hold of that wheel and push yourself straight? Whether it's a school assignment, or a work project, you all meet things that slow you down. 101
Sometimes it is easy just to give up and ignore the hard work you have put into something. You've already built a solid base on which you can rely. One barrier should not be the reason for you to give up all your previous efforts. 102 Keep moving forward, developing what you have.
So how can you react when something doesn't turn out as you've expected? Maybe that's because you don't make proper prediction, which is not a shame. 103 After all, nobody else is. You just need to step back and look at the situation. Then rearrange your next move. Ask for help if necessary. Oftentimes, people are more than willing to give you support and advice.
Bounce back. Reevaluate the goals you should have set for yourself at the beginning. Don't look at your unsatisfactory performance as a disaster or failure. 104 Concentrate on how great it will feel after it is finally done.
105 Keep reaching for your goals and you will achieve them. One minor barrier is nothing if you really want something and are willing to work for it.
    A.View it with success.
    B.Move on with your life.
C.You don't have to be perfect.
D.Forget them as soon as you can.
E.Your hard work shouldn't be overlooked.
F.It is also up to you whether you will give up, or fight through those tough battles.
G.You just have to keep in mind that these barriers are only temporary and greater things lay ahead.

Sensitive children are these special, observant(善于观察的)people. They notice when you're sad, and they ask why. They're often old souls with big hearts who want to make other people happy. 106 Why?
Because they're creative(有创造力的). 107 They're dreamers. Their creativity shines through in all they do, ideas just coming to them. They show a great appreciation for the arts and they're inspired by the beauty they find in the world. They notice that tiny little caterpillar(毛虫)crawling on the sidewalk and the puffy(松软洁白的)clouds in the sky.
Because they're supportive. 108 They believe in people and want to see them do well. They want to make the people they love happy. Sensitive people are often great listeners—they want to know people and understand what they're thinking and feeling. They want to be there for you when you need them.
109 They can often bring another perspective to the table because they tend to think differently. They're insightful and reflective—they like to take the time to be alone and spend time with their thoughts. They appreciate calm and quiet moments.
Because they're strategic. Psychologist Dr. Elaine Aron's and author of The Highly Sensitive Child says highly sensitive children are, “ 110 ” Our sensitive ones are the leaders.
A.Sensitive kids typically have incredible imaginations.
    B.Because they're unique.
    C.Because they are careful.
D.They're going to do big things in this world.
E.They try to build up those around them, not tear them down.
F.They remember most words you say and enlarge their vocabulary.
G.Quick to grasp subtle(微妙的)changes and generally behave reasonably.

Lots of people avoid books. They read emails, websites and papers for work, but not books. They are busy, but even if they have time, they would rather relax on their computers or in front of the TV. 111 However, I think there are lots of benefits of reading, which screen-based activities don’t have.
112 Looking at screens can be very stressful for your eye muscles, and clearly you should avoid looking at screens for an hour before bed to get a good night’s sleep.
113 I often forget the time or things around me! Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better.
I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people’s point of view, and understand other people’s decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling. 114
So my challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15 minutes every single day for a month. Take 15 minutes when you are waking up, going to bed, eating lunch, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book? 115 Good luck, and happy reading!
A.One thing I personally love reading, is being transported to another world.
B.If you make it, why not pass the challenge on to someone else?
C.You have a better understanding of the whole world.
D.Everyone is different and has their own interests.
E.You really can be inside someone else’s head!
F.Reading can get rid of your stress.
    G.It’s better for your eyes.

Do you have what it takes to survive in the desert in the event of an accident or emergency? In fact, you don’t have to be a survival expert as long as you can keep some important tips in mind.
Keep your head covered. It’s been said that the biggest dangers in desert survival are exposure and dehydration. 116 One of the best defenses against the sun is always having a big hat or other coverings for your head with you. If the top of your head is exposed to the direct sun, or even indirect sun for long periods, your body needs to work hard to keep itself cool. 117
Cover the rest of your body as well. 118 Finding shade or constructing a shade shelter is one of the first ways for desert survival, as keeping out of the direct sun and not exposing yourself to the heat of the day will help to save water.
119 Actually, do drink the water, if you have it. Just don’t run out of it all at the first sign of thirst. A better way is to ration it for yourself, taking smaller sips throughout the day. If you do come across water in the desert, use extreme caution before you start drinking it down — it may not be safe for drinking.
Stay hungry. 120 So if you have food with you, take care to only nibble enough to keep the hunger pains away and your energy up. Your body can survive much longer without food than it can without water.
    A.Don’t drink up the water.
B.Drink as much water as possible.
C.Neither of these is to be taken lightly.
D.The more you eat, the thirstier you’ll get.
E.This goes hand in hand with the first tip.
F.So the first rule in desert travel is covering the head up.
G.And the last thing you want to do is increase your thirst.

    Pool Safety Tips for Kids
On a hot summer day, there are few things that are more appealing than a nice cool pool. 121 And it is completely relaxing. Of course, if you have children, there are certain safety measures you should take, whether you have a pool in your backyard or are going to a public pool.
Go swimming together. No person should ever swim alone. Though many people do, the simple truth is that it only takes a second to become injured or drown.
122 Having someone there with you can make the difference between life and death. This is especially true for young children. If your child is under the age of 5, you should never allow him or her to swim out of arm's length.
123 Kids love to chase one another through the water. But it is important that you emphasize to your children that at no time should they be running around the pool or pushing anyone. In the water, teach children not to jump on top of one another and to watch their surroundings, so that they do not accidentally knock into others, injuring them. Playing around in the pool is very interesting but dangerous.
Keep it locked. If you own a pool, you must have a locking gate around your pool. 124 Keep the gate locked at all times, even when you are physically in the pool. It is terrible for children to steal into the pool.
Know the way out. 125 Make sure that they know where all ladders are, and that you teach them to use them for entering and exiting the pool safely. Although your child may be able to lift herself or himself out of the pool using the side, that is not the safest way to go.
A.Don't play around in the pool.
    B.Something sad happens every year.
C.Swimming under water is forbidden in the pool.
D.Be sure to show all children the proper way to exit the pool.
E.Slipping into the water seems like the perfect way to deal with the heat.
F.This is to prevent children from entering the pool without your permission.
G.Make sure kids know food should be eaten either before or after swimming.

As for cheating, most kids come up with many reasons why they have to cheat. Most of them think it nothing serious. 126 It can make big trouble for you not just in school, but also with your family, friends, and, sometimes most importantly, yourself.
Cheating can get you into serious trouble.
127 Punishments can be serious, starting with zero on the test, and going all the way up to getting kicked out of school. If you cheat to get a better grade, you’re risking getting a much worse grade next time.
    128
You’ve probably heard an old saying “When you cheat, you’re really cheating yourself.” It is not fair to yourself to cheat. School can help make you a better person. If you never really learn these things because you’re cheating, then all you’re going to learn is how to cheat!
Cheating is unfair to your friends.
129 You re obeying the rules, and then someone does better than you by breaking the rules. What do you think of that? So, when you cheat in school to get better grades, it’s unfair to the kids who actually study and do the work.
You see, cheating will bring us a lot of trouble. Cheating is the same as lying. 130 And even worse, it will lead to more cheating. So are you still proud of your cheating again?
    A.Cheating is unfair to yourself.
    B.Cheating is part of testing.
C.But in fact, cheating is a big deal.
D.It will result in students’ distrusting each other.
E.Every school has a different way to deal with cheating.
F.That’s because most of us don’t think very highly of someone who lies.
G.It’s important to obey rules in games and sports, and that goes for school, too.

Making the Most of Your Local Library
We're continually learning, and it's important that we have access to information that will both educate us and guide us in becoming active members of the global community. 131 Below are several that we can make the most of the library in our neighborhood.
    • Appoint a Library Day
Choose one day per week to visit our favorite library branch to better explore our community. 132 And it'll keep us reading and learning about things that interest us. Independent learning is important to a person's development, and a library day will allow our time to further investigate the topics in which they are most interested.
    •Get Involved in Library Programs
133 From book clubs to reading hours, these programs encourage us to read, to learn, and to get involved. Talk to the librarians to learn more about these programs. If our local library team is open to it, we may even propose a program that they would be interested in, and help to get it up and running. Taking this type of plan is a great learning experience. 134
•Create Goals for You to Reach
This is a particularly good approach during the summer when we have more time to spend reading. Set a goal of a certain number of books. 135 Or speak with the librarians to build a book list that will keep our minds engaged over the summer.
A.Make sure to read in a certain amount of time.
B.This will create an event we will look forward to.
C.Libraries often create programs to engage the readers.
D.The library is a wonderful destination if you want to learn.
E.Going to the library together can prove a great bonding experience.
F.And it'll help us develop communication and problem-solving skills.
G.Check for author events, book clubs, and poetry programs at your local library.

Is It Bad to Cross Your Legs When You Sit?
Crossing your legs is an extremely, common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. 136
A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. 137 However, if you sit for long periods of time, it’s important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldn’t have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and it’s important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour.
138 Ideally, it’s best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip (髋部,臀部) width apart, on the floor, but it’s not easy to maintain perfect posture all day. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic (骨盘的) bones to turn. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck.
Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. 139 While this feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb (麻木的) can cause permanent nerve damage.
140 Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.
    A.It is usually practiced unconsciously.
B.You won’t feel any immediate effects.
C.Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain.
D.So when you take a seat, warn yourself of the bad habit.
E.Crossing your legs might cause problems that you are not aware of.
F.So next time you sit down, try to sit with both of your feet on the floor.
G.This pressure can cause numbness of some of the muscles in your foot and leg.

Four ways to spot fake news
Fake news is a term used to describe any news item that presents false information as facts in an attempt to make you believe a certain thing or react in a certain way. 141 Here are some ways you can spot whether a news story is fake.
    Is there a sensational headline?
142 If the article has a shocking title, or a wild claim that makes you want to click to read more, look beyond the first few lines and try to find the evidence behind the claim.
    Is it editorial?
Editorial is a type of news commentary that many legitimate (合法的) news sources publish. 143 Similarly, if the article you re reading is written like a news report but has opinions in it which aren’t quotes, then question it. All respect ed news sources present news with plenty of facts—quotes from experts, survey data and official statistics, and allow the reader to make up their own minds on an issue.
    144
Many news organisations, real or fake, attempt to be the first to ’break’ a news story in order to remain relevant in a highly-competitive market. If the article you re reading has spelling mistakes, an incorrect date, or anonymous (匿名的) sources, bear in mind that this news article might be unreliable.
Where does the news come from?
145 Sometimes this source is named but other times the source is anonymous. Naming a source is a good indication that the news is real, as the person is willing to go on record and put their reputation at risk to break the news; bear in mind that fake news sites often lie about their sources.
    A.Is the content reliable?
B.Is it competitive in the market?
C.Many people avoid any news that is unfavorable to them.
D.Most news articles will have a ’source’ for their information.
E.Many fake news sites earn money by getting you to click on headlines.
F.If you re a social media user, chances are you’ve read a fake news story without even knowing it.
G.However, the key is to remember that it gives the editor ’s opinion about something, rather than reporting facts.

Easy, kid-friendly ways to make tomato sauce
You can’t beat the convenience of tomato sauce from a jar, but what about when you’re desiring something a little more homemade? You don’t need to keep an Italian grandmother on speed-dial. 146 Use two pints (品脱) of tomatoes in the following formulas to make approximately three servings’ worth of sauce.
    No-cook tomato sauce
147 Add all the ingredients to a large bowl, sprinkle generously with salt, and stir in a few tablespoons of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 2 or 3 hours at room temperature to allow the salt to soften the tomatoes and meld the flavors.
    Cherry tomato pan sauce
Slice the tomatoes in half and thinly slice or mince 1 or 2 garlic cloves (depending on how much you love garlic). 148 Cover and cook for about 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes have mostly softened into a stirrable sauce. Taste and season with salt and pepper, along with any fresh or dried herbs.
    Roasted or grilled tomato sauce
Keep the tomatoes whole for this version. Preheat a conventional oven or toaster oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit or preheat a gas grill to medium heat. For oven-roasting, place the tomatoes in a single layer in a baking dish. Roast for about 20 to 25 minutes, or grill for about 15 to 20 minutes, until the tomatoes are starting to burst and the skins are starting to char. 149
150 So you can add other ingredients you may have on hand. Add more, or cut back on, garlic depending on your tolerance. Experiment with adding a few shallots instead of an onion. Stir in chopped fresh or dried herbs like basil, oregano, rosemary and parsley. If you like heat, add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes.
A.This olive oil-based sauce is ideal for vegetarians.
B.Roughly cut the tomatoes and any fresh herbs on hand.
C.You just need a helpful kid and some tomatoes to start.
D.Carefully pour the tomatoes into a bowl and season to taste.
E.These sauce techniques are customizable to your family’s tastes.
F.Add more salt to taste and chopped fresh herbs if you have them.
G.Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat, then stir in the tomatoes and garlic.

1.上文“Educators and business leaders have more in common than it may seem.”(教育工作者和商界领袖的共同点比看起来要多。) 讲的是教师的目标,下文“Technology companies have a great interest in developing a workforce with the STEM skills needed to grow the company.”(科技公司有兴趣培养一支具有推动企业发展和行业发展所需的STEM(科学、技术、工程和数学)技能的员工队伍。)讲的是企业的目标;“How can they work together to achieve these goals? Play may be the answer.”(他们如何共同努力实现这些目标呢? 指出了二者的共同点,即要想实现教师和企业的目标,都需要“玩”,其中“these goals”指代的就是教师的目标“prepare students for a successful future”和企业的目标“developing a workforce with the STEM skills needed to grow the company”,所以E项符合题意。故选E项。
讲的是我们需要专注于STEM技能,能与下文形成转折:“but the reality is that STEM skills are enhanced and more relevant when combined with traditional, hands-on creative activities”(但现实情况是,当与传统的动手创造性活动相结合时,STEM技能会增强,而且更具有相关性。) 故选A项。
3.上文“Many experts argue that the most important skills aren’t related to specific technologies, but to creativity skills like imagination, problem-solving, and the ability to experiment and take risks.”(许许多专家认为,最重要的技能与特定的技术无关,而是与想象力、解决问题的能力、实验和冒险的能力等创造力技能有关。)
4.上文“Research shows that given 15 minutes of free play, four-and five-year-olds will spend a third of this time engaged in spatial, mathematical, and architectural activities.”(研究表明,如果给四、五岁的孩子15分钟的自由玩耍时间,他们会把三分之一的时间用于空间、数学和建筑活动。) G项“This type of play”指代上文提到的这种游戏类型;G项“discover and develop key principles in math and geometry”指出了开展这类游戏的好处,即有利于孩子发现并掌握数学和几何学的关键原理。故选G项。
5.上文“Secondly, it doesn’t take 21st century technology to foster 21st century skills. This is especially important for under-resourced schools and communities.”(其次,培养21世纪的技能并不需要21世纪的技术。

Talent Smart has conducted research on over a million people and found that 90% of top performers are skilled at managing their emotions in times of stress.
97.上文“Research conducted at the University of California found that people who focused daily on feeling grateful for what they’d experienced improved moods, energy, and physical health. (加州大学进行的一项研究发现,每天关注感恩的人会改善心情、精力和身体健康。)”说明,积极的心态对人的身心健康都有好处。下文“..., with them focusing the brain’s attention on something that is completely stress-free.(通过他们把大脑的注意力集中在完全没有压力的事情上。)”
98.上文“Technology enables constant communication and the expectation that you should be available all the time. (科技使人们能够不断地交流,并期望你在任何时候都有空。)”说明科技使得沟通畅通无阻。选项D通过转折的方式说明科技的弊端“但是,这会使人们更频繁地承受压力”符合上文的语境。同时承接下文“Turning off work emails and mobile phones provides a break from these possible sources of stress.(关掉工作邮件和手机可以让你从这些可能的压力来源中解脱出来。)” 。故选D项。
99.根据下文“so an adequate amount of sleep is essential.(因此充足的睡眠是必要的。)”
100.根据上文“The easiest way to make stress off-and-off lies in something that people do every day: breathing.(让压力离开的最简单的方法是人们每天都做的事情:呼吸。)” 上文“Close the door and just sit in a chair and breathe.(关上门,坐在椅子上呼吸。)”和下文“which prevents the mind from wandering.(这可以防止思想走神。)”

101.由前文“We've all come across a bump(凸起)in the road. What sets people apart is how they react to that bump. Are you one to lose control in disappointment? Or do you catch hold of that wheel and push yourself straight? Whether it's a school assignment, or a work project, you all meet things that slow you down (我们都遇到过路面隆起,让人与众不同的是人们对这个隆起路段的反应。你是那种会在失望中失控的人吗? 亦或你抓紧方向盘,直接过去?无论是学校的作业,还是工作项目,你都会遇到一些让你慢下来的事情)”可知,人生路上时不时地会有这样那样的问题阻碍我们前行,但正如那些隆起路段,这些问题都只是暂时的。G项“You just have to keep in mind that these barriers are only temporary and greater things lay ahead. (你只需要记住,这些障碍只是暂时的,更大的事情还在前面)”,与上文语意连贯,且有递进关系。故选G项。
102.由第二段第一句“Sometimes it is easy just to give up and ignore the hard work you have put into something.” 但是“One barrier should not be the reason for you to give up all your previous efforts. (一个障碍不应该成为你放弃你之前所有努力的理由)”,E项“Your hard work shouldn't be overlooked.(你的努力工作不应该被忽视),与上一句的“放弃你之前做出的所有努力”语意一致。而且,后一句“Keep moving forward, developing what you have(继续前进,发展你所拥有的)”,则是递进关系,不但不能放弃,还要更加坚持。E项承上启下,使上下文语意连贯。故选E项。
103.由第三段第一、二句“So how can you react when something doesn't turn out as you've expected? Maybe that's because you don't make proper prediction, which is not a shame.” C项“You don't have to be perfect.”,以及后一句“After all, nobody else is.”
104.由前一句“Don't look at your unsatisfactory performance as a disaster or failure(不要把自己不尽人意的表现看作是一场灾难或失败)”可知,可以换一个角度看问题,A项“View it with success.(用成功的眼光看待它)”,且下句“Concentrate on how great it will feel after it is finally done(专注于它最终完成后的感觉)”承接上一句,语意连贯。故选A项。
105.由后一句“Keep reaching for your goals and you will achieve them. One minor barrier is nothing if you really want something and are willing to work for it.(坚持伸手去够你的一个个的目标,你就会实现它们。如果你真的想要什么,并愿意为之努力,那么一个小小的障碍就没有什么)”可知,对于一个有目标且为之努力的人,障碍并不可怕,B项“Move on with your life.(继续你的生活)”可知,在生活中我们得解决一个个障碍,为目标而努力,语意连贯。故选B项。

109.根据后文“They can often bring another perspective to the table because they tend to think differently.( 他们往往能提出另一种观点,因为他们的想法往往不同。)” B“Because they're unique. (因为他们是独一无二的。)”符合上下文语境。故选B。
    110.根据本段中心句“Because they're strategic.(因为他们有战略性。)”可知,敏感的孩子更具有策略性,而G项中的能够抓住细微变化,表现理性可以体现出这一点。所以选择项G“Quick to grasp subtle(微妙的)changes and generally behave reasonably. (能很快地抓住微妙的变化,而且通常表现理性。)”符合上下文语境。故选G。

117.根据上文“One of the best defenses against the sun is always having a big hat or other coverings for your head with you. If the top of your head is exposed to the direct sun, or even indirect sun for long periods, your body needs to work hard to keep itself cool.(最好的防晒措施之一就是戴一顶大帽子或其他遮头物。如果你的头顶长时间暴露在直射的阳光下,甚至是间接的阳光下,你的身体需要努力工作来保持凉爽)”可知,上文提到要戴帽子来遮挡头顶,本句为本段最后一句,与上文构成因果关系,F选项中head对应上文中head。故F选项“所以沙漠旅行的第一个规则是把头遮起来”符合语境,故选F。

119.根据后文“Actually, do drink the water, if you have it. Just don’t run out of it all at the first sign of thirst. A better way is to ration it for yourself, taking smaller sips throughout the day. If you do come across water in the desert, use extreme caution before you start drinking it down — it may not be safe for drinking.(事实上,如果你有水的话,一定要喝。只是不要一有口渴的迹象就把它用完。一个更好的方法是给自己定量配给,每天都要小口喝。如果你在沙漠中遇到水,在饮用之前要格外小心——饮用可能不安全)”可知,本段的主旨是关于饮水的建议,A选项中water对应后文中water。故A选项“不要把水喝光”符合语境,故选A。
120.根据上文“Stay hungry.(保持饥饿)”以及后文“So if you have food with you, take care to only nibble enough to keep the hunger pains away and your energy up. Your body can survive much longer without food than it can without water.(所以,如果你带了食物,要注意只吃一点点,这样可以赶走饥饿的痛苦,增加你的能量。你的身体在没有食物的情况下比没有水的情况下存活的时间长得多)”可知,后文提到身体在没有食物的情况下比没有水的情况下存活的时间长得多,说明不建议吃得太多,保持饥饿。故D选项“你吃得越多,你就会越渴”符合语境,故选D。

147.设空处引出下文。根据本段小标题 “No-cook tomato sauce(不要煮的番茄酱)”可知,本段的番茄酱无需烹饪。且后文“Add all the ingredients to a large bowl, sprinkle generously with salt, and stir in a few tablespoons of olive oil.(将所有的原料放入一个大碗,撒上大量的盐,然后加几汤匙橄榄油并搅拌)”提及了所有原料,由此可推知,设空句应提及“原料”,选项B “Roughly cut the tomatoes and any fresh herbs on hand.(把西红柿和手上的任何新鲜药草大致切碎)”符合主旨并且照应后文的“the ingredients”,符合语境搭配。故选B项。
