Buy something you never knew you needed
Whether it’s antiques (古董), food or vintage clothes, you’ll find it at one of London’s markets. Most markets are open over the weekend, but some such as Broadway Market are home to shop, cafes and restaurants during the week — enjoy a walk here along the canal from Angel.
Picnic in the park
No matter where you are in London, there’s likely to be a park nearby. Among all the skyscrapers you’ll find some gardens hidden away, or head to larger parks, such as Hampstead Heath or The Regent’s Park (which is also home to London Zoo).
Watch a play at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre
Originally built by Shakespeare’s playing company, the “Lord Chamberlain’s Men”, this reconstruction of the original Globe Theatre holds productions of Shakespeare’s plays during the summer. Choose standing tickets to get close to the action, but be warned the theatre is open depending on the weather.
Swim outdoors
No, not in the River Thames. If you do like open water swimming, head over to Hampstead Heath ponds. But, if you prefer swimming pools, there are numerous outdoor pools to choose from.
Cruise down the river
See some of London’s landmark sites on a river cruise — take a seat on the top of the boat for the best view.
Finish the day by watching a film under the stars
London boasts many open air cinemas, so there’s something for everyone, from opera outside the Royal Opera House to British films at Somerset House — the choice is yours.

Can people change their skin colour without suffering like pop king Michael Jackson? Perhaps yes. Scientists have found the gene that determines skin colour.
The gene comes in two versions, one of which is found in 99 percent of Europeans. The other is found in 93 to 100 percent of Africans, researchers at Pennsylvania State University report in the latest issue of Science.
Scientists have changed the colour of a dark-striped zebrafish (斑马鱼) to uniform gold by inserting a version of the pigment (色素) gene into a young fish. As with humans, zebrafish skin colour is determined by pigment cells, which contain melanosomes (黑色素). The number, size and darkness of melanosomes per pigment cell determines skin colour.
It appears that, like the golden zebrafish, light-skinned Europeans also have a mutation (变异) in the gene for melanosome production. This results in less pigmented skin. However, Keith Cheng, leader of the research team, points out that the mutation is different in human and zebrafish genes.
Humans acquired dark skin in Africa about 1.5 million years ago to protect bodies from ultra-violet rays of the sun (太阳光紫外线), which can cause skin cancer. But when modern humans leave Africa to live in northern latitudes (纬度), they need more sunlight on their skin to produce vitamin D.So the related gene changes, according to Cheng.
Asians have the same version of the gene as Africans, so they probably acquired their light skin through the action of some other gene that affects skin colour, said Cheng.
The new discovery could lead to medical treatments for skin cancer. It also could lead to research into ways to change skin colour without damaging it like chemical treatment did on Michael Jackson.
4.The passage mainly tells us that ________.
A.scientists have found out that people’s skin colour is determined by the gene.
B.the new discovery could lead to search into ways to change skin colour safely.
C.pop king Michael Jackson often changed his skin colour as he liked.
D.people can not change their skin colour without any pain.
5.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.nowadays people who want to change their skin colour have to suffer a lot from the damage caused by the chemical treatment.
B.Europeans and Africans have the same gene.
C.the new discovery could not help to find medical treatments for skin cancer.
D.there are two kinds of genes.
6.Scientists have done an experiment on a dark-striped zebra fish in order to ________.
A.find the different genes of humans’.
B.prove the humans’ skin colour is determined by the pigment gene.
C.find out the reason why the Africans’ skin colour is dark.
D.find out the ways of changing people’s skin colour.
7.The writer’s attitude towards the discovery is ________.
A.neutral (中立的) B.negative C.positive D.indifferent
There is a famous English saying “You are what you eat”, and it means what you put in your mouth will become part of you. Many experts use it to tell people it’s important to have a good eating habit. For example, too much sweet food makes a person overweight. To avoid being fat, kids are told to keep off sweet food. However, a team of American scientists have discovered something new about eating sweet food.
“When we say some people ‘sweet’, we mean they are kind and friendly to us. Perhaps this word can help us learn more about people’s feelings and acts.” said Brian Meier, a scientist from the study team. “Taste is something we experience every day. What we have done is to find whether we can know someone’s character and behavior depending on the taste.”
In one of their experiments, college students were asked questions about their character----whether, for example, they are soft-hearted or not. Then they were asked to make a list of their favorite food. According to their answers, the scientists found that the students who liked sweet food were nicer.
In their another experiment, the scientists found that people who preferred sweet food such as cookies and chocolate were more willing to help other people in need, and those who ate non-sweet food such as chips weren’t. For example, people with a sweet tooth were more likely to volunteer to clean up their city, visit sick children in the hospital and so on.
The result of the experiments is that people’s helpfulness or being nice has something to do with their taste for sweet food. So eating sweet food is a useful way to make people nice and helpful. Next time, try some ice-cream.
8.The underlined word “it” refers to __________.
A.the sweet food B.the eating habit
C.the American team D.the English saying
9.According to the result of the experiments, sweet food makes people __________.

B.scientists told college students not to eat sweet food.
C.people with a sweet tooth are more willing to help others.
D.people’s character has nothing to do with their taste.
Charles Dickens (1812-1870), the great nineteenth century English novelist, was born near Portsmouth. His father ran heavily into debt and when he was twelve, he had to go and work in a factory for making boot polish. The only formal education he received was a two-year schooling at a school for poor children. In fact, he had to teach himself all he knew. He worked for a time as junior clerk in a lawyer’s office. After that, he worked as a reporter in the law courts, and later in parliament (议会), for London newspapers. His career as a writer of fiction began in 1833 with short stories and essays in periodicals (期刊), and in 1837 his comic novel The Pickwick Papers made him the most popular author at his time in England.
He was a great observer of people and their places because he was attracted by life and conditions in mid-nineteenth century London. He wrote 19 novels all his life and in many of them, Dickens gave a realistic picture of all classes of England society, showing deep sympathy for the poor and unfortunate, exposing the injustice (不公平) and inhumanity(无人性) of the bourgeoisie (资产阶级).
Many of his novels like Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Nicholas Nickleby, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities and so on drew attention to the unsatisfactory social conditions that existed in England over a hundred years ago.
Dickens criticized capitalist society from the point of view of bourgeois humanism. He wished to see improvement in the living conditions of the poor, but failed to find any effective means to achieve that end.

On August 23, 2008, three Chinese flags were raised at the Peking University Gymnasium. People clapped and cheered for Ma Lin, Wang Hao and Wang Liqin, the Chinese athletes who had just won gold, silver and bronze medals at the Beijing Olympics for the men’s singles table tennis. Just like the women’s singles event the day before, China had ruled the medals podium (领奖台). But podium domination (主导) soon became a thing of the past. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2010 limited each team to two athletes per singles event for the upcoming London Olympics, down from the previous three, after changing qualification rules to involve more countries and widen support for the sports.
“To be honest, the standards of the National Games (全国运动会) are higher than those of the Olympics,” said Chen Meng, the Olympic gold medallist in Tokyo for women’s singles and team table tennis. Hou Zhihui, Olympic gold medallist in weightlifting, finished her National Games lift with a total weight of 214 kg, one more than her world record. “It’s difficult. Could only win National Games by doing better than the world record. It’s harder than the Olympics. Could this be the secret of Chinese weightlifting?”, Hou wrote on Weibo after the event.
The Chinese Table Tennis Association said it disagreed with the new rule but accepted it “with regret” in the best interests of the sport. That made the 2008 three Chinese flags at the Olympics a forever history.
“Each province is developing its sports programme at the same time and has produced high-quality athletes. That’s why the National Games are more competitive than the Olympics,” Chung, a sports professor of Hong Kong Baptist University said. The IOC wants each country to be well represented and to prevent any single one from dominating the medal podium, he said. “One of the Olympic values is participation. When you have more than 200 nations and let athletes compete purely based on their skills, then many of them won’t have the chance to compete at all.”
25.What’s the reason for the IOC introducing the new Olympic attending rules?
A.To involve more countries to compete in the game.
B.To reduce China’s opportunities to gain gold medals.

26.What do we know from Chen Meng and Hou Zhihui’s words?
A.World record is easy for them to break.
B.Many nations have no opportunities to gain medals.
C.Internal competition is greater than the world-class game.
D.They have great complaints about the new Olympics rules.
27.Why is winning National Games more difficult than winning the Olympics for Chinese athletes?
A.China has a large population of athletes.
B.Athletes from other countries are less skillful than China’s.
C.Athletes around the country are trained in well-developed programs.
D.The National Games have more strict rules than Olympics Games do.
28.What’s the best title for the news?
A.The podium domination by China B.Unfair Olympics new rules for China
C.Every nation can get equal chances to compete D.Three Chinese national flags — a forever history
A year ago, my friend and I went to a nearby town to attend a wedding. After the reception, we were waiting for a public transport bus to go back home. It was nine o’clock at night, and although many buses passed, none stopped.
We waited for an hour and were getting forlorn. We wouldn’t be able to stay overnight because it was a weekday, and we both needed to work the next day. It was almost 10 p. m. when a family who had attended the same wedding passed by in their car. Probably sensing that we were waiting for some means of transport, they stopped and gave us a lift.
I was so touched by their kindness, and I expressed my gratitude to them.
When we reached my hometown, the family dropped us at the nearest point from where we could catch a shared taxi to get back to the spot where we had parked our bike. On the way, a laborer stopped the taxi. The driver saw his clothes and asked him whether he had money to pay the fare.
The laborer shook his head and said, “No”. On hearing this, the driver refused to take him. I remembered my own dilemma a few minutes earlier, and I told the driver to allow him to sit with us, as I would pay his fare. What an immediate opportunity to pass on the family’s act of kindness! That night, I felt lightness in my heart, and I went to sleep happily and filled with joy about what I had got to do. How I wish this chain of kindness could continue all over the world with your help! That is why today I specially share my story with you again!

We should never give up when we’ve challenged. The following three actresses have set a good example to us.
Sarah Jessica Parker
When Parker was little, she had to take up singing and dancing to help feed her big family.
Despite hard times, Parker’s mom encouraged her children’s interest in the arts. When Parker was 11 years old, the family took a trip to New York City, so Parker could audition (试演) for a Broadway play. The trip was a success—she and her brother were both cast, and then the family moved to New York. Parker continued to work hard and land roles, eventually becoming the title character of a famous TV show.
Emily Blunt
Before Blunt was nominated (提名) for Golden Globes and landing leading roles on the stage and big screen, she could hardly hold a conversation with her classmates: Between ages 7 and 14, Emily had a major stutter (口吃). But that all changed when one of her junior high teachers encouraged her to try out for the school play, which she thought was a totally unappealing (无吸引力的) thing at first due to the fact that she had such a hard time communicating. The teacher suggested she try accents and character voices to help get the words out and it worked. By the end of her teens, Blunt had overcome her stutter and went on to achieve the successful career she has now.
Shania Twain
Twain’s career actually began more out of necessity than raw ambition. Her mom and stepfather often couldn’t make enough to get by, so Twain started singing in bars to make extra money when she was just eight years old. She recalls her mother waking her up at all hours to get up and perform. Sadly, when she was 21, her mother and stepfather were killed in a car accident on the highway.
Twain put her career on hold to step in and take care of her younger brothers. Only when her youngest brother graduated from high school did she feel it was OK to head down to Nashville to pursue her career.
33.Why did Parker’s family go to New York City when she was 11?

D.Because Parker could try out for a play there.
34.What was her first reaction when Blunt was advised to try out for the school play?
A.Excited. B.Uninterested. C.Angry. D.Touched.
35.What did Parker and Twain have in common when they were young?

C.They wanted to become famous. D.They had an unhappy childhood.
T.J. first became aware of (注意到) people going hungry when he saw a man at a traffic light holding a sign asking for help. He was worried that the man didn’t have enough money to buy food, so T.J. and his mom looked online for an answer. They discovered Hunger Free Colorado. Inspired (受到启示) by the group’s work, T.J. decided to raise money for the hungry.
Calling on his friends for help, T.J. organized kids’ club meetings at his house. “We set up a little camping tent I got for my birthday, and we have meetings in there,” he said. “We talk about what we’re going to do next.”
At one of their first gatherings, T.J. and his friends made dog food to sell in their area. Later, they ran a lemonade stand that also offered coffee and ice cream. More events followed. The club planned and held a neighborhood movie night, which was a success. Then they planned a movie night at their school. T.J. invited a spokesperson from Hunger Free Colorado to join them. They told the 75 children how the event would benefit (有助于) kids in the state. T.J. ran the event from beginning to end, including making sure that everything was cleaned up and back to normal afterward.
T.J. isn’t done yet. He continues to hold meetings at his house and plan fundraisers. “The key to fundraising is to find the thing that most people like,” he said.
So far, T.J.’s club has raised more than $8,000 for Hunger Free Colorado and $2,300 for other groups. T.J. likes helping people. He is proof (证明) that everyone can make a difference.

Good study skills matter now more than ever. Many students study by reading their notes and textbooks over and over again. Research studies show there are more effective ways to use your valuable study time.
Practice, practice, practice!
Musicians practice their instruments. Athletes practice sports skills. The same should go for learning. If you want to be able to remember information, the best thing you can do is practice.
Don’t just reread books and notes
Too often, when students reread material, it’s superficial (浅薄的). Rereading is like looking at the answer to a puzzle, rather than doing it yourself. It looks like it makes sense. But until you try it yourself, you don’t really know if you understand it.
Mistakes are okay as long as you learn from them
It’s vital to test your memory. It doesn’t really matter how many seconds you spend on each try. But it’s important to go the next step. Check to see if you were right. Then focus on what you got wrong. In fact, making mistakes can be a good thing. Mistakes are actually a primary key to learning.
Test yourself
Try to quiz yourself the way the teacher asks questions. Put questions on one side and the answers on the other side. Friends can even quiz each other on the phone.
Find examples
Abstract concepts can be hard to understand. It tends to be far easier to form a mental image if you have a concrete example of something. Indeed, it helps to have at least two examples if you want to apply information to new situations.
40.Which of the following is an effective way of learning?
A.Reading notes and textbooks again and again.
B.Practicing what has been learned ever before.
C.Answering some questions given by teachers.
D.Remembering abstract concepts again and again.
41.What does the author advise us to do about mistakes?
A.Be brave to try and learn from your likely mistakes.
B.Don’t try unless you can make sure that you are right.
C.Try to avoid making mistakes till you can do it all right.
D.Try to make mistakes about what you’ve ever learned before.
42.What does the author suggest doing about abstract concepts?
A.Ignoring them if they are hard to understand.
B.Reading and understanding them over and over again.
C.Forming a mental image by having some examples.
D.Applying them to new situations before understanding.
Many animals move from one place to another at certain times of the year. This yearly movement is called migration (迁徙). They migrate to find food, a partner or warmer climate. One of the most wonderful migration in nature is that of the North American monarch butterfly (帝王蝴蝶).
Every autumn, millions of these beautiful insects with fine black and orange wings begin a long and difficult journey. Somehow they manage to travel around 4,000 kilometers south and find their way to California or Mexico. However, until recently no one knew how they did this.
A team of scientists led by Professor Eli Shlizerman at the university of Washington has now found the answer. They have found out that the monarch is able to tell the time of day. It uses its eyes to measure the position of the sun. These two pieces of information—the time of day and the point where the sun is in the sky—allow the butterfly to determine the way to go. Finally, it manages to reach the places where it will spend the winter.
The solution to the mystery of the monarch’s amazing ability comes at a time when it is in serious trouble. Its population has crashed by as much as 90 percent in the last few years. Sadly, human activity is the main reason why the number of monarch butterflies is decreasing. In many of the places where the butterfly can be spotted, people are destroying the natural environment. They cut down trees and use chemicals that kill the plants that monarch caterpillars (幼虫) feed on.
The research on the monarch’s behavior has however led to a greater awareness of this creature. People have been working together to record its migration and make sure that there are enough plants for it to eat. If this works, there may come a time when the number of monarch butterflies increases once again. The more we know about this lovely creature, the greater the chance it will survive to keep its place in the natural world for a long time to come.
43.Why do monarch butterflies migrate to California or Mexico?
A.To live through the bitter winter.
B.To avoid the threat from humans.
C.To confirm the arrival of autumn.
D.To multiply in the warm climate.
44.What can we infer about monarch butterflies from paragraph 4?
A.The species has become extinct in many places across North America.
B.There has been a sharp drop in the number because of human activity.
C.People will never know why they migrate until the number decreases.
D.It is their habitat being destroyed that causes the butterflies to migrate.
45.What do you know about the future of monarch butterflies from the last paragraph?
A.Hopeful. B.Unknown. C.Worrying. D.Hopeless.
46.What is the suitable title for the passage?
A.The Monarch’s Habitat B.The Monarch’s Beauty
C.The Monarch’s Journey D.The Monarch’s Power

King Tut, Egypt’s famous boy king, was buried with many valuable objects. A dagger (匕首)discovered in his tomb has recently attracted extra attention. Researchers have concluded that the dagger was probably made from a special material.
King Tut was only about nine years old when he became ruler of Egypt more than 3, 300 years ago. The young king died when he was just 19, His body was buried in a tomb filled with objects that people believed he would need in the afterlife.
In 1922, Howard Carter discovered Tut’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. Up to now, it was the best preserved ancient Egyptian tomb ever found. In 1925, Carter found the dagger which has a gold handle and an iron blade (刀片).The blade had confused experts because iron was hardly used at that time in ancient Egypt. In fact, it was so rare that it was considered more valuable than gold. Where did the iron for the blade come from?
Around the time of King Tut, ancient Egyptians started using a new word for iron that translates as “iron from the sky”. This led some experts to believe that the iron for the blade came from a meteorite (陨石).But studies of the dagger carried out in the 1970s and 1990s didn’t support that idea.
That’s where modern technology comes in. Researchers used a new technique to examine the blade. They discovered that it was made up of iron and other materials found in meteorites. After comparing it to several meteorites, they even found its possible match — a meteorite that landed in northern Egypt thousands of years ago.
Scientists hope the new study will lead to more discoveries about other ancient Egyptian relics, “It would be very interesting to analyze more Pre-iron Age objects and we could gain precious discoveries.” Daniela Comelli, who is a professor, said.

One Saturday, Mary and 1 were playing with a ball and suddenly the ball went into a big man’s house. We went to his house and asked him if he could let us in to get our ball. He said, “No.” We felt helpless. Then I had an idea. There was a water tank (水箱) behind the man’s house. I looked at it and told Mary that we could climb onto the water tank and jump over the wall. Mary agreed, but we were both wearing skirts. So we decided to get our ball the next day.
The next morning Mary and I went to the water tank very early. We were both wearing shorts. Mary first climbed down into the man’s house by herself and I followed her. We looked for the ball and found it under a bed. Along with the ball were some gold bars! In a rush, we climbed back with the ball.
When we reached Mary’s house, the TV was on. It was news time. We couldn’t believe our ears when we heard that 20 gold bars were stolen from a gold shop. They showed a picture of the gold bars which were exactly the same as the ones we had seen under the big man’s bed. We rushed to tell Mary’s mother about the gold bars and she called the police immediately. The police came at once and caught the man. They found the gold bars in his house.
Several days later a police officer came and said, “Thank you children for helping us catch the thief. Here is the reward for you.”

Battle the wave
Hong Kong is racing against time to contain its worst-ever COVID-19 outbreak.
For the past few weeks, surging cases have been seen in the region. Hong Kong health authorities reported 58,991 new COVID-19 cases on March 10 and a record 291deaths in the 24 hours before, reported Xinhua.
The COVID-19 surge is driven primarily by the Omicron variant, reported the ASEAN post. The first local Omicron cases were linked to two Cathay Pacific crew members who broke Hong Kong’s COVID-19 rules and tested positive later in December 2021. Then many new cases increased.
Population density (密度) and mass movements during Spring Festival are the main transmission factors for this wave of the pandemic, David Lam, a member of HKSAR’s Legislative Council told Xinhua.
Although Hong Kong authorities have reacted since the pandemic began, tracing the potential cases is hard. So is completing the survey, according to Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the Center for Health Protection. Her department was having trouble connecting with people who may have been exposed to the virus because there’s a lack of travel records to trace.
Meanwhile, another key problem is the low vaccination (疫苗接种) rate among the elderly, noted the experts. By March 10, less than 24 percent of those aged 60 and above had two shots, according to data on Hong Kong government’s official website.
Currently, residents are banned from public gathering of more than two people and most venues including schools, churches and gyms are all shut. Dining in restaurants is banned from 6 pm and most people are working from home. Strict anti-epidemic measures such as early medical treatment of patients, tight control on borders will continue until mid to late April.
As its health care system is facing great pressure, a new triage (分诊) system has been carried out. Treatment priority would be given to the elderly and patients in serious condition, while younger patients with mild symptoms would be asked to stay home in isolation (隔离). The Chinese mainland has also stepped up its assistance to Hong Kong, including sending medical teams and testing supplies, building makeshift (方舱) hospitals and ensuring daily necessities.
59.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Why this wave of the pandemic spread so fast.
B.How this wave of the pandemic came about.
C.The seriousness of this wave of the pandemic.
D.The strictness of Hong Kong’s COVID-19 rules.
60.Why is it hard to trace the potential cases, according to Chuang Shuk-kwan?
A.Authorities were not efficient.
B.Some of them were not in Hong Kong.
C.People’s travel information is not recorded.
D.The numbers are large and rising quickly.
61.What is one of the critical problems Hong Kong authorities are facing?
A.They lack testing supplies.
B.More than 70% of the elderly are not fully vaccinated.
C.Residents refuse to follow the anti-epidemic rules.
D.Chief Executive Carrie Lam has resigned recently.
62.What can residents in Hong Kong do under the current and anti-epidemic measures?
A.Attend a wedding. B.Go to school every day.
C.Work out at a gym. D.Work from home.
63.Why was a new triage system started?
A.To give priority to children with COVID-19.
B.To reduce the risks of cross infection.
C.To give patients more efficient treatment.
D.To reduce pressure on hospitals.
Do you ever get the feeling that you are being watched? Well, you might be right.
According to a study published in Nature on June 23, astronomers have found that 1,715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans have been here.
In order to do this, scientists used a previous method that looked for life on other planets. But instead, they changed the method so it could try to determine what places could see us.
The team looked at 331,312 stars within 326 light-years of Earth, with each light-year equaling 9.4 trillion kilometers. Out of all those stars, only 1,715 of them could see Earth within the last 5,000 years, with an extra 319 stars that will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years.
“When I look up at the sky, it looks a little bit friendlier because it’s like, maybe somebody is waving,” said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University, US, and the study’s lead writer.
If a planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars is home to advanced life, they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen on Earth. If that didn’t give it away, then the radio waves we have sent out into space would also be an indicator. In fact, human-made radio waves have already traveled through 75 of the closest stars on Kaltenegger’s list.
Why haven’t we heard from anyone yet, then?
It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems. By the time a message could be received, that advanced civilization would probably not exist anymore.
Alan Boss, a scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in the US who wasn’t part of the study, wrote in an email that this long time would limit the chances for different life to exchange “emails and TIKTOK videos”.
“So we should not expect aliens to show up anytime soon,” Boss said.
64.Why did scientists change the research method?
A.To seek alien life.
B.To count the stars in outer space.
C.To decide what places could view Earth.
D.To measure the stars within light-years of Earth.
65.How many stars will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years?
A.319. B.1,715. C.1,396. D.2,034

67.What could prevent humans from exchanging messages with aliens according to Boss?
A.Aliens don’t exist.
B.It takes a long time for messages to travel.
C.They cannot understand each other.
D.Human-made radio waves cannot travel far.
68.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To present new findings published in a study.
B.To discuss if there is advanced life on other stars.
C.To raise readers’ interest in aliens.

As a young man, AI was a skilled artist. He had a wife and two fine sons. One night, his oldest son developed a stomachache. Thinking it was only some common illness, neither AI nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the illness became acute and the boy died suddenly that night.
Knowing the death could have been prevented if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation,AI’s emotional health was weakened under the effect of his guilt. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than AI could handle and he became an alcoholic (酒鬼).
As the alcoholism progressed, AI began to lose everything he had — his home, his land, his art objects, everything. Eventually AI died alone in a San Francisco motel room.
When I heard of AI’s death, I thought he was a loser because he ended his life with nothing material to show for it.
As time went by, I began to change my judgment. You see, I knew AI’s now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known. I watched Ernie with his children and saw the free flow of love between them. I knew that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.
One day, Ernie told me, “From my earliest memories as a child until I left home at 18, my dad came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said,’I love you, son.’”
Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge AI as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he left love to his son,who became one of the finest, most giving men I have ever known.

I am a shy girl. I find it quite difficult to start small talk when I meet someone for the first time. I always wonder how the other kids my age can be so natural when they are introduced to people they’ve never met before.
On the morning of my first day in high school, I had butterflies in my stomach. I’d heard lots of the first day in high school stories. Many high schoolers had bad memories that they just couldn’t let go of for quite a while. On the way to school I was thinking about what to do when I walked into the classroom. “Shall I wave to those students who’re in the classroom? Or shall I just give them a smile and nod at them? What if they didn’t wave back or didn’t smile back?” I couldn’t stop imagining the worst situation of my first day in high school.
I kept my head down when I got close to my classroom. “Hello, little miss, I’m Mrs Sccar, would you like to start your high school life with a game?” What a relief it was to hear your new teacher talking to you in such a pleasant way! “Sure, I’d love to,” I answered in a low but happy voice.
Mrs Sccar gave me a piece of paper and it was a new school Bingo game. On the paper there were 40 squares, with 20 having questions and 20 empty. The questions were like “Have you ever visited England? Do you have three older sisters?” Holding these pieces of paper, we went to the other classmates and asked them the questions. If any of them answered “yes” to a question, I wrote down his or her name in the empty square following the question. When I’d filled in all the empty squares, I knew everyone in my classroom. I quite enjoyed my first day in high school, especially the Bingo game.
