Marriages in Egypt are somewhat different from those in the West. They will discourage dating if single men and women aren’t related. Among the middle and upper classes, the man and woman know each other from schools or universities, where young people gather in groups like in the West. 21 Sometimes families negotiate a marriage for an unmarried son or daughter.
However, the steps toward marriage are the same as those in the West. 22 The discussion usually covers such topics as the dowry (嫁妆) and wedding expense, etc. The two families then arrange a meeting between the potential bride and groom. 23
The wedding usually takes place quickly, unless the groom-to-be is going abroad to work or study, in which case the marriage may be postponed. The marriage may be very simple, consisting only of the mosque priest (清真寺牧师) to declare the marriage contract between the groom and the bride’s father, who speaks on behalf of his daughter.
24 According to Egyptian law, both men and women have the right to ask for a divorce. Upon divorce the father is granted custody (监护人) of any children. Any dowry paid by the groom to the bride’s family must be returned.
Egypt is trying to bridge the difference between traditional interpretations (方式) and modern models. At one time, Egypt gave women the right to ask for a divorce only in certain circumstances, such as her husband’s being mentally ill. 25 Now in Egypt and other countries, traditional interpretations are being challenged.

How to get kids to respect wildlife
Children who respect wildlife as something worthy of care and protection usually grow up kinder and more considerate and often generate the same positive feelings in those around them. 41 .
Respect their wildness
42 . And this isn’t always the best thing for the animals — or kids as well. Show kids that animals in their natural habitats are living their best life — and should respect their own qualities.
Respect all the animals
It’s easy for kids to respect those cute and adorable mammals. 43 . Habitats need all sorts of animals to stay healthy, so show kids why every insect is important. (For instance, worms keep soil healthy by digging through the dirt.) Kids can learn about those not-so-cute animals by browsing online galleries or photos of insects and bugs.
44
Out of curiosity, young kids want to chase after a squirrel, or pet a wild rabbit. But human interactions with wildlife can negatively affect animals by changing their natural behavior. Teach children to leave animals alone and observe them from a distance.
Respect their homes
You have taught your child to leave those cute animals alone, but other choices can still harm wildlife. Try to keep kids from taking ‘souvenirs’ that actually are some animals’ home (like shells, nests, or logs). 45 . That trash includes our leftover food, which can be harmful to some animals. Five Easy Ways to Feel Your Best
During the busiest days, people often withstand great stress. Stress is no good for your mind or your body. Studies have found that your chance of a heart attack increases 9.5 times after an intense event. Anxious feelings can also lead to sore skin. 46
One: Make Time for Meditation (冥想).
You don’t need to meditate for hours to reap the benefits — just ten minutes a day can make a difference. The key is to find quiet moments you can commit to. Whether you opt (选择) for the moment in the morning or just before bed, you’ll feel calmer in no time.
Two: 47
Essential oils smell amazing, and they’ve also been associated with reduced stress levels and may even be able to kill the flu virus. Whether you prefer peppermint or lavender, fifteen minutes is a great way to keep your mood on the up and up.
Three: Listen to Music.
48 What’s even more interesting, though, is that the type of music may matter less than the act of listening. From classical to heavy metal, music of all sorts can help ease tension. Pick a song, kick back, and tune out.
Four: Take a Walk.
Plenty of research has shown how bad sitting all day can be for your productivity and your overall health, but it also turns out a lunchtime stroll may be even more beneficial than it’s thought previously. 49 It’s just another reason to keep flats in your desk drawer.
Five: Take Vitamins.
When we are under great pressure, we tend to desire sugary and fatty foods. Stocking up on betterforyou snacks is one way to avoid diet problems. 50
A.Smell the Difference.
B.Breathe the Fresh Air.
C.Making sure you remember to take your vitamins is another.

Football clubs have existed since the 15th century, but unorganized and without official status. It is therefore hard to decide which the first football club was.
Early clubs were formed by former school students. 51 In the beginning, football was dominated by public school teams. Later, teams consisting of workers made up the majority.
Another change took place when some clubs became willing to pay the best players to join their team. 52 In the 1880s, the interest in the game moved ahead to a level that tickets were sold to the matches. And finally, in 1885 professional football was legalized. Three years later, the Football League was established.
53 Football Association Challenge Cup (FA Cup) became the first important competition in 1871. The following year a match between England and Scotland was played for the first time. That was followed by 4,000 people at Hamilton Crescent.
Football was for a long time a British phenomenon. 54 The first game outside Europe occurred in Argentina in 1867. But it was foreign British workers who were involved and not its domestic citizens.
Then the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded. England and the other British countries did not join FIFA from the start. They had invented the game and saw no reason to obey an association. 55
In 1908, football was included as an official sport in the Olympic Games. Until the first FIFA World Cup was played in 1930, the Olympic Games football tournament ranked as the greatest on a national level.
A.Other milestones were now to follow.
B.Still, they joined in the following year.
C.Thus, football was played all over the world.
D.But it gradually spread to other European countries.
E.Until now, FIFA still plays a major role in the world.
F.And the first of this kind was formed in Sheffield in 1855.

Sending handwritten letters may have fallen out of fashion, but I’m a great believer in the power of letters. There’s something unique and special about handwritten things. You write a letter not because there’s something you need to know, but there’s something you want to say. 56
The letter is a powerful and memorable way to touch the ones you care about. When my granny died and I cleared her house, I found hundreds of letters she had kept. 57 There were letters from her mother, who died long before: I was born, but sitting reading them one rainy afternoon, her words stretched out across time and I felt I knew her.
58 It can enrich a relationship and allow it to grow. When I was 12, I faked a letter from a parent to the pet shop for a pet mouse. My mum punished me and made me write letters to some relatives. One of them was my uncle who I’d only met a few times before. I wrote a long letter detailing my life and listing my interests. My punishment-complete, I forgot about this until I suddenly got a reply from him. “How lovely to hear from you,” he said, and went on to tell me all about his life. He’d love to hear about what subjects at school I enjoyed. 59 I have grown close to him since then.
I often think about how that one naughty childhood behavior led to such an enriching communication that stretched on for many years. It encouraged me to write to lots of other people in fact. 60 So, I’d encourage you to put pen to paper and see where it leads. What have you got to lose?
A.That is the point of the letter.
B.They told the story of her relationships.
C.Receiving a letter is such a lovely surprise.
D.It’s also a way to make you more thoughtful.
E.And it’s something I keep up with to this day.
F.Then we started a communication that went on for years.
G.That’s why we would prefer handwritten letters to emails.
Life comes in a package. This package includes happiness and sorrow, success and failure, hope and despair (绝望). Life is a learning process. 61 With each passing day we learn to handle various situations.
Love
Love plays a key role in our life. Love makes you feel needed. Without love a person could die and also become cruel and angry. In the early stage of our life, our parents are the ones who shower us with unconditional love and care, and they teach us about what is right and wrong, good and bad. 62 .
Happiness and Sorrow
Materialistic happiness is short-lived,but happiness achieved by bringing smiles on others, faces gives a certain level of fulfillment (满足感). 63 No mind is happy without peace.
Success and Failure
Failure is the path to success. It helps us to touch the sky, teaches us to survive (生存) and shows us a specific way. Success brings in money, fame, pride and self-respect.
64
Hope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do well. Hope makes us dream. Hope builds in patience. Life teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hour, because after every night there is a day. Nothing remains the same. We have only one choice — keep moving on in life and be hopeful.
Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday, for it has passed and is beyond our control. Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or dull. 65 .

When people think about ways to help the environment, encourage biodiversity and decrease greenhouse gases, they don’t usually think about the impact of food waste. 66
Producing food for a growing global population is a complex challenge with a lot of negative environmental consequences, so food waste creates unnecessary stress on our fragile environment. Here are four things you can do to cut food waste.
67 This can help increase the shelf life of many of the most commonly wasted foods, including fruit, vegetables and dairy products. About 90% of milk waste happens in the home. Adjusting your fridge to the right temperature can save 50, 000 tons of milk waste every year.
Single-use plastics. Many of us are seeking to decrease the amount of single-use plastics in our lives, and in our shopping baskets. This is good but often these plastics and packaging keep food fresh for longer. 68 Scientists are working on developing methods of treating and storing food that can extend its shelf life.
Dish up smaller portions. This results in up to 20% less food waste. Many of us put our leftovers in the fridge, then forget about them. Fortunately, there are many ways to manage our fridge contents effectively and decrease food waste. 69 Labeling leftovers reminds us when they went in and when they need to be eaten by. Try and freeze meat dairy and bread if they are close to spoiling—this will extend their life.
Buy directly from local suppliers. Our food systems and supply chains are incredibly complex, which leads to high levels of food loss and waste. In contrast, buying directly from local suppliers results in less waste. 70
A.Set your freezer to below 5℃.
B.Store the food in the fridge.
C.These range from apps, to the humble post-it note, or pen.
D.Support a local business, eat quality food, and decrease waste.
E.The most commonly wasted foods are fresh fruit and vegetables.
F.Fortunately, there are significant developments towards a post-plastic world.
G.Yet food waste is responsible for up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Being interviewed can be extremely stressful. Follow these tips, and you will go into the interview room feeling a fresh as a daisy(雏菊),with plenty of energy to focus on the student exchange interview.
Give yourself plenty of time.
Stress consumes much energy. 71 Make sure that you allow plenty of time to get yourself ready, and travel to the place where your interview is being held.
Keep things as normal and calm as possible.
72 Shower, dress and have breakfast in the normal way. Make sure it’s a good breakfast, too——you’ll need the energy later on. If you want to have a brief look at your application, that’s OK. But keep it within ten minutes. 73
Get someone to drive you to the interview spot.
Even if you can drive, get someone to drive you there. If it’s a long drive, the driving will tire you out. 74 However, don’t get the person to ask you pretended interview questions, which will stress you out and use up your valuable energy. Instead, talk about whatever else helping you to relax.
75
Take a snack and eat it 10-15 minutes before your interview. If your stomach is empty, you’ll be disturbed and won’t have the energy to concentrate on the whole interview. Take a quick review of the content before the interview to keep your energy full.
A.Start your day as you usually do.
B.Understand that it’s not an exam.
C.Add and preserve your energy in the interview spot.
D.The last thing you need is to panic and rush around.
E.Know what questions to expect and how to answer mem.
F.Spending too much time on it will cause you stress and waste your energy.
G.Moreover, having someone to talk to on the way will take your mind off the interview.
What makes a work of architecture great? Most people would argue that aesthetics are the most important. 76 However, Roman architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio believed that we should also consider durability and function when assessing a structure. The Rostonville Library in my city is a great example of Vitruvius’s principles.
Constructed entirely of granite — a hard and tough stone, the library is durable. It can withstand environmental pollution. For example, it is resistant to acid rain. Moreover, its granite structure is stable so it’s more likely to survive an earthquake. 77 It uses solar energy for heating and a rooftop garden for cooling.
78 Providing free access to print and digital information, it conveys a feeling of openness and accessibility. Furthermore, the entire library is on one level, and it has an open design — there are no inner walls or dividers. In addition, large windows let in plenty of natural light, so it’s easy to see and get to each department within the library.
Finally, the library is beautiful, with aesthetically pleasing details both inside and out. The large windows are copper-framed (铜框的). The copper color provides an interesting contrast against the color of the granite structure and it will remain as the copper ages. Growth from the rooftop garden, which reaches down the sides of the building, adds to the aesthetics of the building. 79
Durability, functionality and beauty make the Rostonville Library a great structure. Architects who follow Vitruvius’s principles help to make the city more pleasant to live in. 80
A.The library is also sustainable.
B.It is true that beauty is critical.
C.This is not the only concern of the architects.
D.The library was designed with functionality in mind.
E.It softens the lines of the structure and helps it to fit into its natural surroundings.
F.Plus, the library was built on the edge of the city park, surrounded by native plants.
G.Buildings that fulfill these criteria offer both peace of mind and beauty for their users.

We set off on our journey up Mount Wutai onto its peak to appreciate the mysterious and beautiful Bodhisattva Lights, ball-shaped lights floating in the whole sky with radiant beams. Seen from the foot of the mountain, the sky was gray and cloudy. 86 It sometimes appeared in white mist, and sometimes was completely covered by clouds.
On the mountainside, our clothing grew wet. 87 It slowed the horses down to a heavy pace. We spent the night at a small temple. The next morning we continued our climb in the rain. The road was more slippery than the day before, so we had no choice but to get down from our horses and walked on foot.
On the way, we were told the unusual phenomenon wouldn’t be observed in the rain. We sighed with disappointment. 88 And the sun set in the west, the clouds disappeared and the mist faded.
Eventually, we arrived at the peak, with the sky filled with stars. Late in the night, we got awake by a shout. “Get up. Hurry up to see the Lights!” We moved quickly, threw on a few pieces of clothing and ran out. It was cold, making our bodies shake from head to foot. 89 Just before our eyes, the mysterious phenomenon appeared.
Thousands of ball-shaped objects floated slowly in the distance, shining golden beams of light, as though the whole sky were filled with countless glowing lanterns. The balls moved across the sky at the same speed. 90 They were light and delicate. Meanwhile, we all just froze there, speechless with wonder, appreciating the incredible views.

If you are a newcomer to the USA, you may find your name hard for the local people to pronounce. It often brings trouble. 91 . Here are some practical tips for you.
Make your name easier
When you are applying for a job or attending a presentation, write down the phonetic spelling next to your name. This will make your name much easier. From my own experience, my new friends find this method useful. When they see “Ilincha [ee-lean-ka]”, they can follow the guidance correctly. 92 .
Act in a right way
If others mispronounce your name, you should never question why they can’t pronounce it correctly. 93 . Instead, you can behave politely by offering the right pronunciation to your friends. Just politely show them how to say your name right. And then, you can even start interesting conversations about the meaning of your name.
Stay true to yourself
94 . Take me as an example. People often ask me if I have a nickname, or if they could just change my name into something easier. But I hold to my ground. I would be true to myself and say, “No, I would prefer to be called [ee-lean-ka] as this carries great meaning for me.”
95 . We should all love and celebrate each of our names. Therefore, be proud of your name and speak up for yourself.
A.Be patient and kind

This instant satisfaction, undoubtedly, is killing our ability to wait. 96 . Here are some strategies to pick up that magic mix if you weren’t born with it.
● Visualize success
There’s no need to set a real situation where you wait in a super long grocery checkout line to test yourself. Simply visualizing it helps a lot. See yourself smiling and breathing as you wait for the line to move. 97 . For example, you could say, “it’s not bad to enjoy this magazine while waiting”. Your mind will start to process the picture as a real experience and help to set you up for future successes.
● Slow down
Racing around is not necessarily the only way to get what you want. 98 . Most adults do not feel happy when they’re rushing, and children are even less capable of doing it with a good attitude. Instead of sweating through your routine, turn on some background music you like and move at a normal pace.
● 99
The ability to let your mind wander, whether daydreaming or actively applying your imagination, is a skill that improves patience. 100 . Take a break and do something that could free your brain from the work that takes tons of energy. This helps you build up your staying power, so next time you might be more patient and more likely to focus on your task.
A.Learn to distract yourself
B.Add some positive words if possible
C.Therefore, we are getting more and more impatient
D.You don’t have to get the whole paper done in one go
E.We get so caught up in hurrying that we get stuck in that mode
F.But sometimes, a fast pace does improve our working efficiency
G.Thus, the loss of this mixed quality of tolerance and calmness is unavoidable
How to develop self-discipline (自律)
Face the reality
It’s easy for us to make excuses for ourselves or show ourselves in a better way than our actual situation. 101 , we have to accept the truth. Sometimes people make comments on our reality. It is hard to hear, but we need to accept the truth before promising to change.
Set clear goals
We have to keep in mind where we want to go and what we want to finish. If we don’t set clear goals, we’ll float around like feathers in the wind. Then show these goals where you will see them every day. 102 . So I made a plan each day and ran 15 miles a week. Every day, I looked at those goals and made sure I achieved them.
103
No one likes to sleep in more than I do. I am entirely a night owl (夜猫子). However, when I’m in the habit of getting up early, I am much more disciplined and productive. Getting up early doesn’t give us the ability to create miracles, but it does help us start our day’s work in a focused way.
Do the small things
104 . It doesn’t happen that way. Self-discipline starts by performing small and ordinary activities consistently. Every small act of faithfulness makes your self-discipline stronger.
Keep track of your progress
It’s pointless to have goals if you aren’t measuring whether or not you are moving toward them. Like I said, I need to update my spreadsheet every day. When I don’t track my progress, I stop doing things I need to do and become lazy. It’s easy to lack discipline when you lose focus on where you’re going. 105 .
A.Get up early
B.But if we want to change
C.And when I breathe deeply
D.I ended up in bed for six weeks
E.We all want big changes to happen quickly
F.Several years ago, I wanted to lose 20 pounds
G.Keeping track helps you stay in the right direction
Volunteering is a great way to help your community. It is something that people should be doing more often, because it is a great way to help out those less fortunate. Another reason that you should volunteer is that it has a lot of health benefits, which people don’t seem to really know about. 106 .
Reduce depression (抑郁)
Volunteering is a great way to decrease depression, especially if you are someone who doesn’t have a great support system at home. 107 . When you are volunteering, you are around other people often talking and laughing, which helps reduce depression.
108
A lot of volunteering involves packing boxes or moving things, and that is very good for your heart. You can actually walk the dogs and clean cages at a local animal shelter, which are all ways to stay active. If you are volunteering to do something you love, you may not even notice that it takes a great deal of physical energy, so it’s much better than just working out because you enjoy it.
Make you feel satisfied (满意的)
When you do voluntary work, you feel this satisfaction out of what you are doing, because you know you are helping other people. When you feel this satisfaction, your mental and physical health improves, and you just feel better overall (全面的). 109 . And this is something that volunteering provides.
Reduce anxiety
110 . When you start volunteering, you find new ways to communicate with other people. It helps reduce your anxiety levels. It can help you find ways to interact with others and can help you build confidence around others.
A.Help you stay active
B.The results are as follows
C.Build up your mental strength
D.Here are four health benefits you can get through volunteering
E.If you always feel embarrassed at new social occasions, then volunteer
F.A lot of people become depressed because they don’t have friends or families
G.In order to stay healthy, you have to keep a balance between your mind and body
Money Matters
Parents should help their children understand money. 111 . So you may start talking about money when your child shows an interest in buying things, candy or toys, for example.
● The basic function of money
Begin explaining the basic function of money by showing how people trade money for goods or services. It is important to show your child how money is traded for the things he wants to have.If he wants to have a toy, give him the money and let him hand the money to the cashier(收银员). 112 . When your child grows a bit older and understands the basic function of money, you can start explaining more complex ways of using money.
● Money lessons
Approach money lessons with openness and honesty. 113 . If you must say no to a child’s request to spend money, explain, “You have enough toy trucks for now.” Or, if the request is for many different things, say, “You have to make a choice between this toy and that toy.”
● 114
Begin at the grocery store. Pick out two similar brands of a product—a kind of name-brand butter and a generic (无商标消费品),for example. You can show your child how to make choices between different brands of a product so that you can save money. 115 . If he chooses the cheaper brand, allow him to make another purchase with the money saved. Later, you may explain how the more expensive choice leaves less money for other purchases.
A.Wise decisions
B.The value of money
C.Permit the child to choose between them
D.Tell your child why he can—or cannot—have certain things
E.Ask yourself what things that cost money are most important to you
F.Talk about how the money bought the thing after you leave the toy store
G.The best time to teach a child something about money is when he shows an interest
What a comedian can teach you about managing stress
We often accept stress as part of the cost of modern life, but it really doesn’t have to be. We all know that laughter is the best medicine. 116 People who can laugh at their own misfortunes bounce back faster and stronger. Here is what a comedian says about coping with stress.
You can try to find a different perspective. 117 Once a friend of mine fell asleep in the middle of a class. His teacher decided to make fun of him by inviting students to applaud, wondering whether my friend would applaud along when he woke up. He did and the whole class burst outlaughing. After learning everything, he was both embarrassed and ashamed of course but after a while, my friend laughed. “If this had happened to someone else, it would have been amusing. So it’s no less funny, just because it happened to me. “
118 There’s no doubt that we all experience great stress now and then. We’ve all been personally affected, in some way. You might not have felt like laughing at the time But now, looking back, you could consider all of the strange aspects of the experience and all of the things you did to keep active or simply stay sane
When you share stories with your friends, you can choose to share stories of trauma (创伤) and pain, or you can choose to lift their spirits with stories of hope and growth. 119 Take the exact same story and change the focus from “feel sorry for me” to “laugh with me”. Keep in mind that we’re all in this together, that we all share the same ridiculous experiences, and that we can laugh together at whatever life throws at us. 120
A.Always share a good story.
B.Why not do what comedians do?
C.You can also look again and laugh.
D.But laughter does more than cheer you up.
E.Then you are able to make a simple choice.
F.In this way. you will say goodbye to stress forever.
G.If you have trouble seeing the funny side, you may find the following inspiring.
Writing tips for travel journals
There are many benefits of keeping a journal when you’re traveling. It helps you remember your visit and learn more culture and customs. Also, it helps you reflect on what you have learned. 121 Here are some writing tips for your travel journals.
Write about what you imagine it will be like
Sometimes when you travel, your destination is wildly different than what you expected. Maybe you expected the local food to be bad but it turned out to be delicious. 122 . Maybe you thought you would be more comfortable with the language. Whatever it is, write it down before you arrive. It will be interesting to compare these predictions to your actual experiences.
Write during your trip
123 . Therefore, try and write as much as you can while traveling. Your journals don’t have to be long, but you should let them highlight what you feel. Before going to bed, try and recall what you did that day, what you thought and how you felt. This will serve as a great way to help you reflect and grow from what you experienced.
124
Even though your journal is meant for writing, pictures are still worth a thousand words. Combining pictures with your first-hand accounts of what they represent, or what happened when they were taken will make for an even more comprehensive narrative of your travels.
Write about your trip after you leave
It is necessary to write about your trip before you arrive. 125 . It is important to reflect on your travels to develop new understandings and apply them to future adventures. This is also a great way to learn about yourself. Step back from all the things you did and try to see the big picture. It may surprise you.
A.Activities on the list.
B.Add pictures to your journal.
C.Such refection can be later applied to other parts of your life.
D.Maybe you imagined the town to be smaller than it actually is.
E.Equally importantly, you should also write about it after you leave.
F.It is always easier to remember things when they are fresh in your brain.
G.Keeping a travel journal offers opportunities to fix your feelings on the page.
What Makes Art Valuable?
Why do people buy art? An even bigger question is, why do people pay tens of millions of dollars to own art? Is it for status, prestige(威望), and approval from peers? One thing to remember is that value isn’t only linked to its artist quality. 126
Provenance
In the art world, an artwork’s value can be the result of provenance. In other words, who has owned the painting in the past. 127 The masterpiece went from a value of less than $10,000 when David Rockefeller first owned it, to upwards of $72 million when it was later sold by Sotheby’s.
The Thrill of Auction(拍卖)
The salerooms at Christie’s or Sotheby’s are full of billionaires—or better yet, their advisors. 128 They know when to bump up a lot and when to slightly tipthe scales. They’re running the show and it’s their job to make sure the highest bidder(出价者)has a shot and that values soar.
Historical Significance
Historical significance works in a couple of ways when it comes to determining the value of art. Firstly, you can consider the piece in terms of its importance to art history in its genre. For example, a painting by Claude Monet is worth more than other more recent impressionist work since Monet changed the standard of art history and impressionism as a whole. 129 After all, art is often a reflection of the culture of its time and as it became a product, art was affected by political and historical changes.
130 Whether in a perfect storm of passion and desire or a calculated risk of business deals and rewards, art collectors continue to spend millions upon millions each year at art auctions. What makes art valuable beyond the cost of supplies and labor? We may never truly understand.
A.World history also affects the value of art.
B.It’s interesting to explore what makes art valuable.
C.It seems as though all of these factors combine to determine the value of art.
D.Auctioneers are skilled salesmen who help raise those prices up and up and up.
E.It’s obvious that changes in polities have a historical effect on the value of art to different people.
F.For instance, art describing beautiful women tends to be sold for higher prices than that of beautiful men.
G.For example, Mark Rothko’s White Center was owned by the Rockefeller family, one of America’s most powerful dynasties.
Fear is one of our strongest emotions. However, people with phobias(恐惧)have an extreme fear response that causes both physical and psychological pain. In everyday life, some phobia triggers(诱因)are much easier to avoid than others. For instance, people who suffer from a fear of bats are highly unlikely to be troubled by these creatures every day. 131
The good news is that there are a variety of different methods used to treat phobias. Among the most popular are cognitive behavioral therapy(疗法), exposure therapy, and virtual reality therapy.
*Cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT)
132 It is thought that unreasonable anxiety is caused by a patient’s negative interpretation of events, rather than the events themselves. CBT is a talking therapy that helps patients assess their reactions to situations, replacing the worry cycle with more useful or realistic thoughts.
*Exposure therapy
The aim of exposure therapy is to gradually desensitize(使脱敏)the patients to the source of their phobia. 133 A person who fears spiders might place thinking about a spider at the bottom of the list, and having a spider move along his arm at the top. With the help of a psychologist, the patient systematically works their way through the list, using relaxation techniques until they are comfortable with each stage.
*Virtual Reality therapy
Exposure therapy isn’t a usable option for all phobias. 134 Advancements in virtual reality systems mean that patients can now face their fears through a headset rather than in the real world. 135 In the case of people with a phobia of flying, they can take a course of sessions in which they board a virtual plane and experience announcements, take-off and landing without having to buy a plane ticket each week.
A.Luckily, modern technology offers an alternative.
B.The patient ranks situations from least to most terrifying.
C.Instead, our brains can be retrained to overcome a phobia.
D.The aim of CBT is to change how we think about certain situations.
E.Someone suffering from a social phobia, however, will struggle to lead a normal life.
F.This enables patients to face their phobias, while knowing they are in no physical danger.
G.CBT is as effective as medication in treating many anxiety disorders.
Navigation(导航)skills seem to come naturally to some-but others aren’t so lucky. If you are lacking in a sense of direction, especially sick of taking wrong turns, here’s how to start finding your way.
To begin with, I have to be frank that I had an interest in researching this topic because my own sense of direction is absolutely rubbish. 136 I can find my way there easily enough because there are signs pointing me in the right direction. But getting back to my dining table is another story. After all, there are no helpful signs saying, “This is where you were sitting less than five minutes ago, Jane.”
However,a good news is that according to scientists the hippocampus(海马体)-the part of the brain associated with navigation-expands to accommodate the mental maps of those who are puzzled with directions. 137 They just need to work at it.
Firstly, it’s a good idea to put the GPS away. In a University of Nottingham study, drivers who’d followed step-by-step GPS instructions found it harder to work out where they’d been. 138
139 Not least it is because the amount of mental energy it re-quires means it’s more likely to stick in your mind. Looking at online maps on a big screen-or even studying a paper map-also allows you to get a sense of that all-important bigger picture and how everywhere fits together.
Finally, try to relax when you’re on unfamiliar ground. 140 But this sudden burst of anxiety will only increase your pressure and prevent you from calmly working out which way to go.
A.I always get lost when I am out.
B.Yes,they can improve the sense of direction.
C.Take popping to the toilet in a restaurant, for example.
D.They even failed to notice they’d been past the same place.
E.However, they can finally manage the direction completely.
F.It’s all too easy to get panicked by the suspicion of getting lost.
G.Studying a larger map and memorizing the route in advance can be helpful.
We often idealize the act of cooking. In my mind’s eye, I can see myself swanning through the kitchen with smooth hair as I stir a pot of spaghetti in slow motion. 141 As the appointed chef of my household, making dinners after a long day’s work is an annoying chore (杂务).
So, when we knew about a weekly meal delivery service, I jumped at the chance. 142 .Each meal’s ingredients came wrapped up in a separate paper bag, each labelled with a recipe card.
The actual cooking was easier, too. I was delighted by pre-processed vegetables and properly-portioned dressings. Think about the hunt for recipes, the cuts and burns, and the spilled bottle of olive oil. 143 .
A few weeks into our subscription, however, I realised that gone with the frustration of cooking was its joy. 144 You choose ingredients from the supermarket shelves. You wash them, peel them, chop them, season them or combine them. You see them transform from one thing into another over the process. Remove that process and what are you left with?
145 For busy families who couldn’t afford the connection with food, these boxes offer fresh, healthy, waste-free meals that require minimal effort and time. But if I have the time and energy to indulge in that luxury, I think it’s worth doing.
A.These were all things of the past.
B.In fact, cooking can connect you with your food.
C.In practice, there is rarely anything ideal about cooking.
D.Cooking is messy, tiring, and most of the time, annoying.
E.Soon came our box of ingredients that made everything easier.
F.So clean and ready, the ingredients no longer look or feel like food.
G.Of course, I do realise the practical advantages of meal subscription boxes.
Expressing gratitude in your daily life sometimes is challenging and annoying. 146 Christina Costa, a psychologist who has studied the positive effects of gratitude on the brain, tells us how to be better at showing gratitude.
Start a gratitude journal. Make it a habit to write down the things that you’re thankful for. You can set up a timer. Writing in the morning is a nice choice because that can set your day up best. You can also do it on your phone or by hand. 147
Write a letter. Think of someone in your life who you have not had the chance to thank. Why are you grateful to those persons? 148 Then send them a letter, an email, or even better, deliver the letter in person and read it to them.
If you’re having trouble finding someone to thank, think small. The smaller you starts the more you’ll start seeing things you’re grateful for. Think of the bus driver picking you up. 149 Then he is indeed a person that you can be grateful for.
150 Look around you, and take notice of everything that makes up your environment: the sky, the cool breeze. The act of simply noticing things is a great way to make the strength of all of the unique connections in your life clear.
A.Gratitude is a good virtue.
B.Notice the world around you.
C.Whichever way you choose, make it as easy as possible.
D.Think of a specific moment when they helped you.
E.But experts say it doesn’t have to be that complicated.
F.Maybe he’s really nice or waits for a minute for you.
G.Do you still remember the moment when he helped you?

The Rostonville Library in my city is a great example of Vitruvius’s principles.(然而,罗马建筑师Marcus Vitruvius Pollio认为,在评估一个结构时,我们也应该考虑耐久性和功能。

79.根据上文“Finally, the library is beautiful, with aesthetically pleasing details both inside and out. The large windows are copper-framed (铜框的). Growth from the rooftop garden, which reaches down the sides of the building, adds to the aesthetics of the building.(最后,图书馆很漂亮,内外细节都很有美感。
80.根据上文“Durability, functionality and beauty make the Rostonville Library a great structure. Architects who follow Vitruvius’s principles help to make the city more pleasant to live in.(耐用、功能和美观使罗斯顿维尔图书馆成为一个伟大的建筑。

G项“The best time to teach a child something about money is when he shows an interest.

D项“Tell your child why he can—or cannot—have certain things. (告诉你的孩子为什么他可以或不能拥有某些东西)”符合语境。故选D项。
114.此处是小标题。根据下文“Begin at the grocery store. Pick out two similar brands of a product—a kind of name-brand butter and a generic (无商标消费品),for example. 115.根据下文“If he chooses the cheaper brand(如果他选择了更便宜的品牌)”可知,此处应说明允许孩子在不同的品牌之间做出选择。C项“Permit the child to choose between them. (允许孩子在两者之间做出选择)”符合语境。故选C项。

【导语】这是一篇议论文。本文介绍了笑能帮助我们缓解压力,生活中要笑对困境,看向事物积极的一面。

117.第二段第一句提到“You can try to find a different perspective. ”(你可以尝试换个角度)。下文作者讲了朋友的一个故事,旨在证明只要找到了好笑的点,就可以把一件尴尬的事情变成一件好笑的事情。而读者可以从这个故事里获得灵感,受到鼓舞。从上下文可以得知,这个角度实际上指的是看到事情的有趣的地方,找到好笑的点。G项“If you have trouble seeing the funny side, you may find the following inspiring.”(如果你很难看到有趣的一面,你可能会发现下面的故事很鼓舞人心。)
118.空处位于段首,由此判断该句应为该段的主题句,后文提到“You might not have felt like laughing at the time But now, looking back, you could consider all of the strange aspects of the experience and all of the things you did to keep active or simply stay sane (神志正常的) .”(当时你可能不想笑,但现在,回头看,你可以考虑所有奇怪的方面的经验和所有的事情,你做了保持活跃或只是保持理智。) C项“You can also look again and laugh.”(你可以回过头看看,然后大笑一场) 该项符合文意,故选C。
119.前文提到“When you share stories with your friends, you can choose to share stories of trauma (创伤) and pain, or you can choose to lift their spirits with stories of hope and growth.”(当你和朋友分享故事时,你可以选择分享创伤和痛苦的故事,也可以选择用希望和成长的故事来鼓舞他们的精神。)后文提到“Take the exact same story and change the focus from “feel sorry for me” to “laugh with me”. ”(以同样的故事为例,把重点从“为我感到难过”转变为“和我一起笑”。)由此判断,该段说明可以把难过的事情转换成另外一个方面去吸收。结合文章标题“What a comedian can teach you about managing stress”(喜剧演员可以教你如何管理压力)可知,喜剧演员会让观众一起笑起来。B项“Why not do what comedians do?”(为什么不学学喜剧演员呢?)B项符合文意,故选B。
120.前文提到“Keep in mind that we’re all in this together, that we all share the same ridiculous experiences, and that we can laugh together at whatever life throws at us. ”(请记住,我们都在一起,我们都有同样荒谬的经历,我们可以一起嘲笑生活给我们的任何东西。),此空前面建议人们要认识到每个人都会经历不好的事情,无论经历什么,我们都可以发笑。所以此空应该是这么做的好处。E项“Then you are able to make a simple choice.”(然后你就可以做一个简单的选择。)

126.上文“One thing to remember is that value isn’t only linked to its artist quality.”(需要记住的一点是,价值不仅与艺术家的素质有关。) 而B项“It’s interesting to explore what makes art valuable.(探索是什么让艺术有价值是很有趣的)”填入空格处,可以引起下文,符合题意。故选B项。
127.根据空格后的句子“The masterpiece went from a value of less than $10,000 when David Rockefeller first owned it, to upwards of $72 million when it was later sold by Sotheby’s.(大卫·洛克菲勒最初拥有它时,这幅杰作的价值不到1万美元,后来在苏富比售出时,价格已超过7200万美元)”和句中的the masterpiece可知,空格处的句子应该提到某一杰作。所以G项“For example, Mark Rothko’s White Center was owned by the Rockefeller family, one of America’s most powerful dynasties.(例如,马克·罗斯科的《白色中心》属于洛克菲勒家族——美国最强大的王朝之一)”填入空格处,和下文是顺接关系,符合题意。故选G项。
D项“Auctioneers are skilled salesmen who help raise those prices up and up and up.(拍卖师是熟练的推销员,他们帮助提高价格)”提到了拍卖的事,且下一句中的they就是指的D项中的Auctioneers。故选D项。
129.根据空格后的句子“After all, art is often a reflection of the culture of its time and as it became a product, art was affected by political and historical changes.(毕竟,艺术往往是其时代文化的反映,当它成为一种产品时,艺术受到政治和历史变化的影响)”和句中的after all可知,空格后的句子是对空格处的句子进行解释——当它成为一种产品时,艺术受到政治和历史变化的影响。 所以E项“It’s obvious that changes in polities have a historical effect on the value of art to different people.(很明显,政治变局对艺术于不同人群的价值产生了历史影响)”填入空格处,符合题意。故选E项。
C项“It seems as though all of these factors combine to determine the value of art.(似乎所有这些因素共同决定了艺术的价值)”说是上面提到的这些因素共同决定了艺术的价值,总结了全文,符合题意。故选C项。

132.根据下文“It is thought that unreasonable anxiety is caused by a patient’s negative interpretation of events, rather than the events themselves. CBT is a talking therapy that helps patients assess their reactions to situations, replacing the worry cycle with more useful or realistic thoughts.”(人们认为,不合理的焦虑是由病人对事件的负面解释引起的,而不是事件本身引起的。
133.根据下文“A person who fears spiders might place thinking about a spider at the bottom of the list, and having a spider move along his arm at the top. With the help of a psychologist, the patient systematically works their way through the list, using relaxation techniques until they are comfortable with each stage.”(一个害怕蜘蛛的人可能会把思考蜘蛛放在列表的底部,让蜘蛛沿着他的手臂移动放在列表的顶部。
134.根据前文“Exposure therapy isn’t a usable option for all phobias.”(暴露疗法不是所有恐惧症的有效选择。) 下文“Advancements in virtual reality systems mean that patients can now face their fears through a headset rather than in the real world.”(虚拟现实系统的进步意味着,患者现在可以通过耳机而不是在现实世界中面对他们的恐惧。)
135.根据前文“Advancements in virtual reality systems mean that patients can now face their fears through a headset rather than in the real world.”(虚拟现实系统的进步意味着,患者现在可以通过耳机而不是在现实世界中面对他们的恐惧。)

136.下文“I can find my way there easily enough because there are signs pointing me in the right direction. But getting back to my dining table is another story (我可以很容易地找到去那里的路,因为那里有指示牌指向我正确的方向。但回到我的餐桌是另一回事)” 可知此处讲述作者在以自己出门在餐厅找洗手间为例,要找到洗手间很容易,但要回到自己的餐桌位置却并不容易说明,因此C项“以去餐馆上厕所为例”符合语境,故选C。
137.上文“those who are puzzled with directions (那些对方向感到困惑的人)” 以及“They just need to work at it (他们只需要努力)”可知主语与上下文相同,都应由“they” 指代“those who”,注意文中的指代关系,因此B项“是的,它们可以提高方向感”符合语境,故选B。
138.上文“In a University of Nottingham study, drivers who’d followed step-by-step GPS instructions found it harder to work out where they’d been. (在诺丁汉大学的一项研究中,遵循GPS逐步指示的司机发现很难确定自己去过哪里。)”可知有些司机仅仅靠GPS,很难找到方向,空格处进一步说明方向感差带来的后果,因此D项“他们甚至没有注意到自己经过了同一个地方”符合语境,故选D。
139.下文“Looking at online maps on a big screen-or even studying a paper map-also allows you to get a sense of that all-important bigger picture and how everywhere fits together. (在大屏幕上查看在线地图,甚至研究纸质地图,也可以让你了解至关重要的大局,以及各地是如何融合在一起的。)”可知设空处提出的培养方向感的方法,不仅更能让人印象深刻,而且在看在线地图或纸质地图时,可以让人更好地找到目的地,与空格处是本段主旨,因此G项“研究一张更大的地图并提前记住路线可能会有所帮助”能够概括段意,故选G。
140.上文“Finally, try to relax when you’re on unfamiliar ground (最后,当你在陌生的地方时,试着放松)”说明的是从思想上保持冷静放松,设空处随即解释保持放松的原因,以及下文“But this sudden burst of anxiety will only increase your pressure and prevent you from calmly working out which way to go.

141.根据前文“We often idealize the act of cooking. In my mind’s eye, I can see myself swanning through the kitchen with smooth hair as I stir a pot of spaghetti in slow motion. (我们常常把烹饪的行为理想化。在我的脑海里,我可以看到自己梳着光滑的头发在厨房里游弋,用慢镜头搅拌一锅意大利面。)”可知,此处强调的是每个人都经常把做饭理想化,即自己梳着光滑的头发在厨房里游弋,用慢镜头搅拌一锅意大利面。后文应该强调事实并非如此。C选项“In practice, there is rarely anything ideal about cooking.(实际上,关于烹饪,很少有什么是理想的。)”
142.根据后文“Each meal’s ingredients came wrapped up in a separate paper bag, each labelled with a recipe card.(每顿饭的食材都包装在一个单独的纸袋里,每一种都贴上了食谱卡。)” E选项“Soon came our box of ingredients that made everything easier.(很快,我们的食材盒来了,一切都变得简单了。)”
143.根据前文“Think about the hunt for recipes, the cuts and bums, and the spilled bottle of olive oil. (实际的烹饪也更容易。我喜欢预先加工的蔬菜和适当分配的调味汁。想想寻找食谱的过程,伤口和烫伤,还有打翻的一瓶橄榄油。)”可知,此处强调的是在送餐服务提供包装食材之前,作者做饭的各种艰难情况。后文应该强调在拥有送餐服务提供包装食材之后,之前的种种困难将完全消失。A选项“These were all things of the past.(这些都是过去的事了。)” 故选A。
144.根据前文“A few weeks into our subscription, however, I realised that gone with the frustration of cooking was its joy. (然而,订阅了几周后,我意识到烹饪的乐趣伴随着沮丧而去。)”可知,此处强调订阅食材虽然给作者带来了方便,但是让作者失去了做饭的乐趣。后文应该强调揭示失去乐趣的原因。B选项“In fact, cooking can connect you with your food.(事实上,烹饪可以把你和你的食物联系起来。)”
145.根据后文的“For busy families who couldn’t afford the connection with food, these boxes offer fresh, healthy, waste-free meals that require minimal effort and time. (对于那些负担不起与食物联系的忙碌家庭来说,这些盒子提供新鲜、健康、无浪费的食物,只需要最少的努力和时间。)”可知,此处强调的是定制食材的好处。G选项“Of course, I do realise the practical advantages of meal subscription boxes.(当然,我确实意识到订餐盒的实际优势。)”

146.空前说“Expressing gratitude in your daily life sometimes is challenging and annoying.(在日常生活中表达感激有时很有挑战性,也很烦人。)”,空后说“Christina Costa, a psychologist who has studied the positive effects of gratitude on the brain, tells us how to be better at showing gratitude.(心理学家Christina Costa研究了感恩对大脑的积极影响,她告诉我们如何更好地表达感激之情。)”,空格处承上启下,说明表达感激还是有办法的,E选项“But experts say it doesn’t have to be that complicated.(但专家表示,事情没必要那么复杂。)”
147.空前说“You can also do it on your phone or by hand.(你也可以在手机上或手写。)”,空格处应该说任选一种方法,C选项“Whichever way you choose, make it as easy as possible.(无论你选择哪种方式,都要让它尽可能简单。)”
148.空前说“Think of someone in your life who you have not had the chance to thank. Why are you grateful to those persons?(想想你生命中还没机会感谢的人。你为什么要感激那些人?)”,空后说“Then send them a letter, an email, or even better, deliver the letter in person and read it to them.(然后给他们寄一封信,一封电子邮件,或者更好的是,亲自把信交给他们并读给他们听。)”
149.空前说“Think of the bus driver picking you up.(想想接你的巴士司机。)”,空格处应该说明这个司机具体如何帮你的,F选项“Maybe he’s really nice or waits for a minute for you.(也许他真的很好,或者等了你一分钟。)”
150.空格处是本段主题句,由空后的“Look around you, and take notice of everything that makes up your environment: the sky, the cool breeze.(看看你的周围,注意构成你周围环境的一切:天空,凉爽的微风。)”可知,本段主要讲的是要注意周围的世界,B选项“Notice the world around you.(注意你周围的世界。)”
