The English language is constantly evolving (演变), and there are a great number of words out there that don’t mean what they used to. We’re talking about common words that you use every day. We take them for granted, but at some point in history, their meanings totally changed, and they all originally meant something much different.
Generally speaking, the word “nice” is one with good meanings. However, back in the late 12th century, if someone said you were “nice”, it was far from nice. Way back when, “nice”was used to mean “foolish” and “stupid”. Later on in the 13th century, “nice” came to mean “shy”, and during the 14th century, it even meant “being careful”. But finally in the 18th century, it changed to the kinder definition we know today, and ever since then, people have been using it in a popular way.
All of us get sad every now and then. It’s a normal part of life. A loved one passes away, we get overlooked for that big promotion at work, or the grocery store is out of your favorite flavor of Hawaiian Punch. These are all things that can make us very sad. However, once upon a time, “sad” had a very different definition. Back in the 1300s, it was the perfect word if you’d eaten too much food at dinner. Through the years, the definition of “sad” changed to “heavy” and then “tired”, all before evolving into the word we use today.
“Awful” is perhaps the one word on this list that should have stuck with its original meaning. While today it means “bad” or “terrible”, “awful” used to mean “awe-inspiring” or “full of awe”. In other words, if something was “awful”, then it was worthy of respect or even fear. However, over the years, “awful” has come to have a completely opposite meaning.

My eighteen-year-old daughter Julia called twenty minutes after she left, saying she had an accident. I grabbed my shoes and was in the car in less than a minute. When I finally saw her, I hugged her tightly. Then I looked at the other driver. Learning that he fell asleep behind the wheel at about seventy miles an hour when the speed limit was forty-five, I could have choked him.
“It could have been worse,” I reminded myself as she cried all the way to the doctor’s office. Luckily, four days after the accident, Julia felt better. At her appointment, her doctor cleared her to resume normal activities, including driving. But I could tell by her look that she had no intention of getting behind the wheel.
Later that day, I sat with Julia as she spoke on the phone with our insurance agent. On the phone, she was professional, telling the agent what had happened in a clear, brief way. I realized she sounded like an adult. And adults drive cars. I realized that no matter how I felt about it, allowing Julia to give in to her fear wasn’t good for her. When she hung up, I hugged her. “You’re stronger than you think,” I said. “And tomorrow you’re going to drive my car and meet your friends for lunch. You just have to push through the fear and do it, and it will get easier each time you do.” I ignored the fear in her eyes and the way my heart sped up when I thought about Julia behind the wheel again.
The next day, Julia drove my car to meet her friends. As I watched her leave, I felt nervous and proud. She texted me when she got to the restaurant, and I felt my heart rate return to normal. The tears I’d been holding back all week flooded my eyes. Watching her leave the house without me for the first time since the accident was frightening, but it was also necessary.

We would like to take a look at cashew nut (腰果). If you have been lucky enough to taste one, you will know just how delicious they are. Once you begin eating cashews, it’s very difficult to stop.
Here’s something you may not have known about cashew nuts until now. The cashew nut that you eat is not a nut at all. It’s the seed that grows inside a single nut found beneath a cashew apple from the cashew tree. The red or yellow cashew fruit does not contain any seeds. Technically, that means they are not actually a fruit - even though they look like one. They taste a little like mango with a bit of grapefruit. It is unlikely that you will ever see one outside of Brazil because its skin is very thin. They do not travel well. In Brazil, they are eaten raw, drunk as a juice or turned into a delicious jam.
The nut is very hard. You have to be very careful if you open it. It contains a poison that can badly burn your skin if you come into contact with it. To remove this, the nut has to be roasted at a high temperature for 20 minutes before it is opened. Once roasted, the nut is ready and the cashew is taken out. It has a thin skin around it. This is peeled off (剥掉) carefully to make sure the cashew is not broken. The cashew is then roasted once more in coconut oil for 5 minutes. Then it’s ready to eat. What has just been described is a long process. This is why cashews are expensive.
Cashews are eaten all over the world. They are also popular ingredients (配料) in different styles of cooking, especially in Southeast Asia. Cashews can be found in nut butter, ice cream, cashew milk and also cheese spread! We are thankful to the Portuguese who discovered the cashew tree in Brazil. If it had not been for them, the Brazilians may have kept cashews all to themselves.

A.It is a kind of nut. B.It is in limited use.
C.It is easy to get. D.It is mainly grown in Brazil .
19.Why is the cashew nut heated at a high temperature?

Should doctors ever lie to benefit their patient — to speed recovery or to cover the coming of death? In medicine as in law, government, and other lines of work, the requirements of honesty often seem dwarfed (变矮小) by greater needs: the need to protect from bad news or to keep a promise of secrecy; to advance the public interest.
What should doctors say, for example, to a 46-year-old man coming in for a routine physical checkup just before going on vacation with his family who, though he feels in perfect health, is found to have a form of cancer that will cause him to die within six months? Is it best to tell him the truth? If he asks, should the doctor lie to him that he is ill, or minimize seriousness of the illness? Should they at least hide the truth until after the family vacation?
Doctors face such choices often. At times, they see important reasons to lie for the patient’s own sake; in their eyes, such lies differ sharply from self-serving ones.
Studies show that most doctors sincerely believe that the seriously ill patients do not want to know the truth about their condition, and that informing them risks destroying their hope, so that they may recover more slowly, or deteriorate (恶化) faster, perhaps even commit suicide.
But other studies show that, contrary to the belief of many physicians; a great majority of patients do want to be told the truth, even about serious illness, and feel cheated when they learn that they have been misled. We are also learning that truthful information, humanly informed, helps patients deal with illness: help them bear pain better, need less medicine, and even recover faster after operation.
There is great need to discuss this issue openly. Not only in medicine, but in other professions as well, people may find themselves repeatedly in difficulty where serious results seem avoidable only through deception (欺骗). Yet the public has every reason to know professional deception, for such practices are peculiarly likely to become deeply rooted, to spread, and to trust. Neither in medicine, nor in law, government, or the social sciences can there be comfort in the old saying, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”
22.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

24.What does the underlined part “they” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A.supportive B.opposed C.indifferent D.shocked
Back from the beach I found an envelope on the doorstep. It was the fifth envelope with my latest photographs. This time I decided to check with the hotel reception. At the reception desk, a middle-aged man introduced himself, “Hello, Ms. Drew. I am Benson living at Room No. 14...I put the envelopes...”
“What the hell? How can you click my snap (快照)... ” I was interrupted by him signaling to walk with him. We silently arrived at Room No.14. A fair, curly haired, ten-year-old girl opened the door.
“This is my daughter Agnes ... She snapped your photographs.”
She smiled bitterly at me and told me I reminded her of her lost mom.
I replied, “ It’s all right honey, if that can make you happy ....”
Day-to-day evening walks made us closer. Agnes saw her mother in me and I reverted (回复) the feelings lovingly. After a week I left as my work in the city had got over. A tearful Agnes bid me goodbye promising in touch.
Each season Agnes greeted me with long mails about “her school”, “her vacation with dad”, “her new year” and much more. The maternal (母亲般的) bond lasted for three years until all my letters were suddenly unanswered. I wondered what could be the reason.
One day my husband came with a plan for the weekend. Then unconsciously we drove down to the beach road heading to the hotel where I met Agnes. A group of girls walled to the seaside with two elderly ladies who looked like their caretakers. A little girl who sat all alone caught my attention. She looked familiar but thin, dark and her face was full of scars (伤疤).
“Agnes... how come? What happened to you?”
Her tearful blue eyes looked sad. One of the caretakers told me that a car accident had killed her dad and this was the first time she responded to any other individual. Agnes lay on my chest deep asleep as I inquired about “orphan (孤儿) adoption formalities”. The little angel hugged, tightly on my shoulders. The sun finally fully emerged out of the vast water expanse to shine brightly over us...

For many people, Christmas is a time to cozy up inside with yummy treats and pretty decorations while the snow falls outside. However, people living in nursing homes often have few family members to celebrate with.
In 2009, Patricia Gallagher in Philadelphia were aware of this so she decided to bring a Christmas book to different nursing homes and read for people. She said, “I just got this idea in my head to call two nursing homes at random and ask if my mother and I could come and read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.’” The nursing homes were more than happy to welcome her in and the residents of those homes were equally thrilled. Thus, her holiday tradition started.
To go along with the book reading, Patricia brought some of her kids’ stuffed animals so the senior residents could hold them while she read the story.
But, when it was time to pack up and go to the next nursing home, Patricia found that no one wanted to give the stuffed animals back! She said, “It was just a nursing home with a lot of elderly people sitting in wheelchairs. And all of a sudden, the whole room became alive with jingling bells and they really didn’t want to give them back because they thought we had given them a gift.”
Seeing the joy that a simple present can bring, Patricia had the idea to gather stuffed animals and dolls as a gift for senior citizens living in nursing homes. Then, she put an ad up for gently used stuffed animals on a website. It wasn’t long before the local communities and schools started hosting stuffed animal collections on her behalf. In just two years, she collected more than 11,000 stuffed animals to gift people!
With so many stuffed animals, Patricia started offering gifts to people living in homes for veterans (退伍军人) as well. She said, “These stuffed animals not only bring people joy, but bring back the memories of their childhood and give them some comfort.”

Brian Fischler is blind. He can tell whether it’s light or dark outside, but that’s about it.
“I grew up sighted like everybody, and I was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (视网膜色素变性) at 13,” Fischler says. “And for me, the lights went out about 2009.” Fischler, a New York-based stand-up comedian, has used the app Be My Eyes since it first came out eight years ago. It relies on sighted volunteers to do tasks like describing holiday cards sent in the mail, or telling you whether that can in your cupboard is coconut milk or chicken soup.
Hans Wiberg, a Danish furniture craftsman, created the app after he got tired of calling his friends and family to ask for help to identify things. He spent a couple of years developing it, and the app was launched in 2015.
But eight years later, there’s a twist. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more accessible, app creators are experimenting with an AI version using tech as well as human volunteers. Be My Eyes CEO Mike Buckley says the argument for AI is that it can do things people cannot. Buckley says, “You can tap into the AI and say, ‘How do I connect to my Sony stereo?’ and furthermore, you can take a picture of your refrigerator and it not only tells you what all the ingredients are but it tells you what you can make for dinner.”
However, he insists that AI won’t completely replace the volunteers who make Be My Eyes so popular. “I hope it ends up being 50-50 because I do think that there is going to be a desire for continued human connection,” Buckley says, “There’s some volunteer feedback we’ve gotten, for example, when they actually get a call they talk about it as the best day of their week.”

One of the hardest things in life is sticking to a healthy diet. Experts recommend you plan your meals in advance, so you aren’t attracted when faced with less-than-healthy choices. It’s said that the average American eats almost 25 percent of their daily calories from snacking (零食) alone, and snacking is the leading cause of childhood obesity.
Therefore, there are two choices: Stop snacking (hard) or snack healthier (simple). But, for many of us, telling apart what’s “healthy” and how much to consume (消耗) are two different things. But, if you don’t keep the amount in check it can seriously ruin your diet. It’s easy to consume double or triple the amount. If you’re struggling to keep you and your family’s snacking under control, you may be interested in the new online store called NatureBox.com, offering a new service delivered right to your front door on a monthly basis.
After you sign up on their website and provide some information about your taste preferences and anything else, the company sends you a box every month containing a delicious selection of healthy snack foods. A box includes 12-15 servings across 4 to 5 different NatureBox snacks — enough to last you and your family for a month.
Each box costs just under $20 and shipping is always free. NatureBox is meant to fit your lifestyle by providing you with snacks you’ll enjoy and look forward to eating. You can easily order what you want to receive based on the snacks you love most. And now, NatureBox is offering an immediate 25% off their first order. As a young man, Al was a skilled artist. He had a wife and two fine sons. One night, his oldest son developed a stomachache. Thinking it was only some common illness, neither Al nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the illness became serious, and the boy died suddenly that night.
Knowing the death could have been prevented if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, Al’s emotional health was weakened under the effect of his guilt. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his sixyearold younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Al could handle, and he began to take in a lot of alcohol and became an alcoholic.

Royal family gather at Windsor Castle for first Easter Sunday service without the Queen on April 9th. Attendees and members of the royal family wore a variety of stylish hats throughout the ceremony. It is a requirement for all women to wear hats on royal occasions. This rule dates back to the 1950s when upper class and royal women would rarely show their hair in public, according to the BBC.
Hats were originally worn for practical reasons such as protection from the sun, rain or cold weather, but quickly people wore them for other purposes. The top hat, for example, was reserved for upper-class men and was worn at formal events such as weddings and horse races. Women also used hats to signify social status, wealth and fashion. The larger the hat, the wealthier the wearer was believed to be.
In addition to status, hats played an important role in British social etiquette. Men were expected to remove their hats indoors, especially in formal settings, to show respect. Women, on the other hand, were to wear their hats until seated for dinner, but then they were expected to remove them.
But hats were not always a symbol of status and etiquette. The bowler hat, created in 1849, was worn by the working class, especially those involved in transportation. The bowler hat became an iconic item of British fashion, worn by both men and women.
Today, hats continue to be an essential part of British culture, with many old and new hat shops throughout the country. The fedora is also making a comeback among younger gen-erations. Taylor grew up on the coast of New South Wales, Australia and swimming in the ocean was part of everyday life. She began spear fishing and worked her way up in her early 20s to become one of very few women who were professional spear fishers and was named the Australian Ladies National Champion.
However, as she spent more time underwater, especially with the sharks, she had a change of heart. “I learned straight away that sharks are nowhere near as dangerous as the media would have us believe. And I learned that they all have different personalities-there’s the shy guy, the cross guy, and the aggressive guy; they’re all different.” From that point on, she decided, along with her late husband and world spear fishing champion, Ron Taylor, to hang up her spear and to only shoot them with her camera.
As a pioneering shark conservationist, Taylor succeeded in many firsts throughout her life’s work. She was the first person to dive with sharks cageless. The first person to test the power of a shark bite; she hand-fed a Great White and petted it. There’s nothing she wouldn’t do to help correct the false image that sharks are dangerous, man-eating beasts. Her research has become the basis for much of what we know about sharks today and she succeeded in becoming the first person to get Grey Nurse sharks protected in a specific area, the first shark species in the world to receive protected status.
When asked about what could be done to help save the sharks, and the oceans, Taylor said she was quite pessimistic about the whole thing. “Change has to come from the government level.”But she also recommended, “The thing that works the best is to get a good story and then get it on camera. Then go on television and speak to the public. Say it to the mothers, “Wouldn’t you like your child. . . when they’re old enough, to be able to see this wonderful, friendly shark?””

In my hometown, Oklahoma, the dirt goes everywhere. When my sister, Faye, and I walk to school, we cover our mouths so we don’t breathe in the dirt. Mama says all the dust is due to the drought(干旱).
Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After church, Papa went to the field to check on the cattle while Mama started dinner. Faye and I played in the yard. Then the temperature suddenly dropped, and Mama shouted from the house, “Iris, you and Faye get inside, real quick now!”
I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust. “Faye, go with Mama!” I shouted. “I will warn Papa.” Covering my face with one hand, I struggled my way toward our family car and got in. The storm hit so fast that the day turned into night in an instant. Papa was still out there! I needed to help him find the car. I turned on the front lights, but would Papa see them in the thick darkness? I pushed the horn (喇叭) again and again, hoping Papa would hear it.
Suddenly, to my great surprise and relief, Papa’s face appeared at the window. He opened the door and climbed onto the seat next to me. After Papa shut off the car’s lights, we huddled together in the darkness for hours. I worried the dirt would bury us.
Finally, the wind subsided and the dust began to settle. We got out and reached the front porch just as Mama and Faye came out from the house.
