Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb's-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn't sure how much it would amount to.

My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn't interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. She flew to Boston on the east coast of the US. Later, she settled in a new neighborhood in East Boston. However, shortly afterwards, the company where she worked went bankrupt（破产）. Then, one day, something terrible happened to Jonathan. His parents were called away to the hospital because his grandmother was ill, and so Jonathan was left at home by himself. Two men had chosen that house for an unannounced visit.

My father said firmly, “If he doesn’t bite me when I try to pick him up to put him in the car, then we have a new dog.” The dog happily joined us with no fight at all, the only thing we were in danger of was getting licked. He kept sticking his head between the two front seats and thanked us for picking him up. The dog had clearly been on the road for some time, he was really too thin. So we fed him a lot over the course of the next two weeks striving to look after him with the hope that he would get stronger. Unfortunately, all our efforts were in vain. He was still very thin.
We took him to the vet, who said the dog appeared to be in good health. The vet guessed the dog was about two years old. He gave the dog all the required shots and sent us on our way. “Amazing! The dog is healthy.” My mother said in an excited voice. So thrilled were we that we headed home immediately. We did love our new family member. The dog was a sweet companion to our family, who was a quick learner and knew how to respond to different instructions. We learned a lesson from the experience that kindness and sympathy made a big difference to our life.

I gave him a salute just like a real soldier.
I thanked him, one of the nation’s heroes, for his service again. He smiled and carefully placed his items back in his bag and started to walk away. I saw him take a few dollars from his pocket. He turned back and asked if we had a vending machine so he could get some cookies.
I told him the right direction, but after looking at his money he put it back in his pocket and started to walk off the wrong way. I walked to him and asked if I could buy him some cookies. He refused, saying he didn’t want a handout and that he would eat something for lunch when he got home.

Then I asked people to lean their backs against the wall of the elevator and adjust their breathing. But suddenly, a man jumped up and down irritably. “What a terrible elevator!” he said angrily. I rushed to stop him. “Please stop! It could be very dangerous. We should calm down and wait for help!” Fortunately, everyone calmed down then. We just waited and waited. I felt anxious and checked my watch.
I thought that this must be the worst interview ever. Obviously, I would be late, and I thought that the interviewers couldn’t be in a good mood.
