    A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Father’s appearing was like a savior to the two children. Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect. The children said loudly, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事,
My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn't understand my world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn't really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass (超过) anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone (长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb's-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn't sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, "A job's a big step to growing up. I'm glad you will be contributing to the household." My dad's words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn't interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

Paragraph 1:The pay arrived at last.

Paragraph 2:I understood immediately what my parents were worried about.

【答案】The pay arrived at last. Although the job was very tiring, I was very happy in my heart for I got something from my work. The toil of labor was forgotten for the time being. I thought I should have my own money and planned how to spend it. “How much money have you earned?” Dad asked. I was surprised, reluctant to say my income. The next morning, my dad’s livestock truck started running. I saw my father’s hard-working figure and thought of his words “A job’s a big step to growing up”.
I understood immediately what my parents were worried about. They were worried that I was too selfish to give. I realized that my labor was very hard, but my growth and our whole family had been depending on the hard work of my parents! Dad never complained about unfairness! He even seemed to think that was fair. I thought, “I’ve only worked for two weeks, but how many years my father has worked!” In the evening, Dad came back. I proudly took out my own money and handed it to Dad.

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Pumpkin (南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage-I carried an 85-pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I’m unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork (软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight,I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.

    Paragraph 1
It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer.
    Paragraph 2
The video was posted the Monday before Halloween.

    【答案】Paragraph 1
It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer. Dad was summoned – less, it seemed, in expectation of practical help than to make sure he didn’t miss out on the spectacle. I heard him propose calling the fire department. “Stay tuned,” said Mom; she’d mentioned she was going to upload the video to Facebook, but it was only then I realized she’d been filming the whole time. The video cuts before my rescue —Dad got me to push my head farther into the pumpkin so Mom could reach in and undo the rubber band round my ponytail. I emerged with squash-conditioned hair, a sore chin and my nose plugged with pulp.
    Paragraph 2
The video was posted the Monday before Halloween. By the end of that day, it had over 1,000 views. People asked Mom to put it on YouTube, and by Wednesday morning we were getting 5:00 am calls from TV breakfast shows and then the international media – the video started racking up hundreds of thousands of views. When I went on a youth camp, I was recognized by children I’d never met. The pumpkin also became a minor celebrity. Passersby and trick-or-treaters would knock and ask, “Which is Rachel’s pumpkin?” before taking selfies with it.

    二、2021届模拟题

    (1)2021·河北唐山市·唐山一中高三月考
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There are a number of volunteer organizations out there that deal in things like clothing donation and the sale of remaining books. Retired schoolteacher Cathy McAllister has been a member of such an organization, VNSA, since 2012. Her duties in this regard involve working throughout the year to help prepare the books for their February sale and acting as personnel chair for the sale itself. This means that she helps coordinate(协调)all the other volunteers that help out before, during, and after the event.
It was before the 2019 book sale and Cathy once again found herself sitting among a towering pile of books and sorting through them to ensure that they would be in go0d enough condition to resell. As she was sorting, she came upon a book. The slightly broken book was in fair condition but it was one of four copies she had already found, and she a saved three of those already. The others had been much more gently used as well. Though she didn't like doing it, she had done this long enough to know that the only remaining choice was to throw it into the pile for repurposing.
A greedy book lover herself, Cathy felt guilty about throwing away a perfectly good book. Before she threw it away, she decided to check for more serious damage inside that might justify her giving it up. She opened the cover and moved to fan through the pages when she noticed something unusual.
When she opened the cover, Cathy was surprised to see that a part had been hollowed out inside the book. It looked as though someone had taken an X-Acto knife and rather expertly hollowed out a significant space. What's more, the book's previous owner had chosen to hide something in that space. She looked down and saw that someone had hidden four packages in the space, each containing ten$100 bills. Cathy's first thought was that the bills were toy money that perhaps a kid had hidden inside as part of some childish game or something.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;

But Cathy soon realized that these were real $100 bills.

Luckily for Cathy, the book also contained the name of the book owner.
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【范文】
But Cathy soon realized that these were real $ 100 bills. Whoever had owned the book had chosen to hide $ 4,000 inside the book. Cathy's second thought upon seeing the money was that this was sufficient to do charity. She didn’t bother considering keeping the money herself. It just didn't feel right to keep it for any reason. Regardless of how much good she thought she might be able to do with the money, Catchy decided that the only realistic choice left to her was to return it to its owner.
Luckily for Cathy, the book also contained the name of the book owner. Using this name, Cathy might be able to find its rightful owner. Still, it would take a little digging. Thankfully, the book's previous owner happened to have a pretty unusual last name. This made Cathy's Internet search much easier. After only about ten minutes online, Cathy found them. The money belonged to a man and his daughter. So thankful were they for Cathy's honesty that they actually ended up donating a generous amount to VNSA to show their gratitude.

    This was it.
    Today was the day.
Finally, she would be able to see her again.
It’d been five long years. Her university days now felt like a lifetime ago. When Jennifer thought back to it, she didn’t like the girl she had been then, but when she thought about Yui Fay, that discomfort disappeared and her whole life lit up.
She couldn’t be more excited. She kept imagining their meeting – how they would run towards each other, hugging and talking of the old times. As she imagined, happiness spread through her body.
It was time to get dressed. As she was struggling about what to wear, she spotted a red summer dress, which she wore that night in Barcelona. She would never forget that night five years before. After a hard week at university, Yui Fay and she spontaneously (心血来潮地) bought bus tickets to Barcelona. They slept on the bus and then spent the whole day exploring the city. In the evening, they met these fun young guys and spent the whole night singing and dancing. Every day with Yui Fay was fun.
After university Yui Fay went back to China where she took over her family’s business, while Jennifer took the job in an office. They promised to keep in contact. But then life happened. The occasional calls faded with time and they had not talked for over two years. Yet, of all her friends, Yui Fay was still the one she felt the closest to. She knew all her fears, dreams, and her wildest stories. She knew that if something happened, Yui Fay would be there for her no matter what. And vice versa. Some friendships just survive the passage of time.
Yet the idea of meeting her was also terrifying. What if…? The idea was too hard to put into words. What if the person she was so fond of was no longer? What if this dinner turned out to be nothing more than a meeting between two boring businesswomen?
At that moment, her cellphone rang.

Jennifer took up her phone and looked at the screen.
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just then, someone was coming towards Jennifer.
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Possible version 1
    Paragraph 1:
Jennifer took up her phone and looked at the screen. It was Yui Fay. She suggested Jennifer bring more clothes as they would have a big project tonight. Confused though she was, Jennifer did what she was told as always. She packed a few more clothes, the red dress included, and left for the appointed restaurant. Yui Fay had not arrived, so she took her time to scan the menu and thought about what to order.
    Paragraph 2:
Just then, someone was coming towards Jennifer. Jennifer looked up and saw the face that she had been dreaming these days. “Yui Fay!” She shouted excitedly and ran to give her a big hug. Yui Fay smilingly hugged her back and told her what the big project was. “Let’s take a bus trip to Barcelona and relive our adventure!” Yue Fay hadn’t changed a bit, still the wild girl she used to be. And Jennifer knew immediately that it would be a great day.
    Version 2:
    Paragraph 1:
Jennifer took up her phone and looked at the screen. It was Yui Fay. She said that she would not be able to come and meet her and asked for a rain check. Jennifer was shocked and disappointed. After all, she’d been waiting for this moment for ages. Sad though she was, she had no choice but to agree. Having hung up the phone, she aimlessly wondered on the street and ended up walking into the appointed restaurant. The menu was filled with her favorite dishes yet she had little appetite for anything. She was so sad that she was not aware of what would surprise her next.
    Paragraph 2:
Just then, someone was coming towards Jennifer. She delicately patted Jennifer on one side of her shoulder, slipped to the other side and said, “Is the seat taken?” Jennifer looked up and saw that naughty, wild and adventurous face that had been carved into her brain. “Yui Fay!” Jennifer shouted out excitedly. “Why are you here?” Yui Fay smilingly explained that she had followed her the whole time to give her a big surprise. The rest of the day was great joy. It turned out that they didn’t change a bit, neither did their friendship.

It's a shop I must have walked past a million times before, but have only noticed until now, and have never thought to enter. It's a little brown brick building with a small window display offering various forgettable items that are of no interest to me. But I have some extra time today and decide to take a quick look.
The interior (里面) of the shop is cool and dark, and it takes a moment for my eyes to ad- just. A strong rose smell hangs thickly in the air, which is nearly enough to turn me away. In spite of this, I continue further into the store, eyes scanning the shelves for anything interesting. Indeed, there are different items, and yet none appeals to me.
    “Can I help you?”
I look up to see an elderly woman behind the counter. She looks a little surprised, and I wonder when she last saw a customer enter her shop.
    “Just looking casually,” I reply.
I make a full circle of the place and there is indeed nothing here I wish to purchase. I wonder how the old woman manages to stay in business. I head towards the door, but pause when I notice a large old book on a wooden stand.
There is no visible title on the well-worn leather cover, and it is locked with a combination lock (密码锁). Beside the book, there is a paper with numbers on it. The numbers read: 02-11-32.
I try the lock with the combination, but it does not open. I am now even more curious to discover what lies between the book's pages. “What is this book about?” I ask the old woman, who has been staring at me quietly the whole time. “Do you know the combination?”
“I do,” the woman replies, but adds nothing more.
I am annoyed by her response, and I've had enough of this place. I turn to leave and I am almost out the door when I hear the woman say, “Try your birthday.”
I wander back over to the book. She's crazy, I think. With my index finger, I hit the numbers into place so that they now show my birth month, day, and year.

    Possible version:
To my astonishment, the lock opens. I pull back the heavy cover and glance through the pages. “This can’t be right,” I whisper in shock as I realize the book is a biography about me! I look up to question the woman, but she is gone and the shop suddenly seems different and brighter. The shelves are now filled with all my favorite things. I wander around the shop again. How did I miss this shop before? I would buy any of these items in it gladly!
Suddenly, I hear a voice, telling me I'm the shop assistant until I find the next customer. I sit behind the counter, waiting for a customer to come in. However, they all walk past the window as though the place was invisible. The few that do enter seem uninterested in what I have to sell, or complain that the smell in the air is too strong. Until one day, a young woman takes an interest in the book. “It won't open,” she notes. “Try your birthday,” I say.

The excitement about Thanksgiving was really building. Grandma arrived with a homemade pecan pie. Dad was searching for his electric carving knife. Mama was in the kitchen humming a song. Little baby Lonnie bounced up and down. Dad smelled the air and sighed. My big brother, Slim, who was anything but slim, sneaked off to his room with a slice of the pecan pie. Even our dog Fido was wagging his tail.
Having set a pretty table, Mama looked up, smiling. “Help me carry in the food,” she said. Slim, who had come out of his room by this time, went racing into the kitchen. " I'll get it! I'll get it!” The rest of us piled in behind him, everyone grabbing a dish. Then we watched Dad carry in the biggest, brownest, best-smelling turkey we had ever seen with Mama's hand under the plate, just in case. Together they lowered the turkey to its place at the table.
It was the tradition in our family to think of something for which we were most thankful. We all ran to the table yelling something like “I'm thankful for school being out” or “I'm thankful for pecan pie!” All eyes were on that enormous turkey as we took our seats.
Yes, everything was perfect except for one thing. On that special day, it was Dad who sat at the head of the table and carved the turkey. It was an honor that he had eagerly expected for days. Mama always called Dad a clumsy ox. He frequently tripped (绊倒) over his own two feet, and he could drop just about anything.
We automatically eased back when Dad tested the electric carving knife in the air. Dad went to work on the white meat first with surprisingly few problems. Slice after slice landed neatly on the plate with thick gravy (肉汁)。Dad leaned forward and grabbed the end of the left turkey leg and cut it off, placing it whole on the plate. His oily fingers shone brightly in the light of the chandelier (大吊灯),and Mama waved her napkin. “I'm all right, Mama,” he said. “I'm all right. ”

But when Dad pulled back the right turkey leg, it slipped from his oily fingers. “You clumsy ox!” Mom yelled, and she quickly grabbed and picked up the leg. Baba looked at the chandelier and looked annoyed. We all laughed, and Fido started barking in circles on the ground. Anyway, our Thanksgiving dinner is here.
As Lonnie yelled, we found a turkey leg was missing. Where’s the drumstick? We felt very strange. Lonnie kept calling and looking at us, pointing under the table. We looked under the table and saw Fido munching on a big turkey leg. When he was found, he stared back at us, unrepentant. Mom said: “So Fido wants to have a delicious Thanksgiving, too.” Fido barked at us, as if confirming my mother’s words. We all laughed. It was so much fun.

Over the years, I've been guilty of hurriedly shutting the front door to many strangers when they came to my home knocking with the intention of selling things. I hated it when they tried their best to persuade me to buy the things they promoted. But earlier this year, around Easter time, a dear friend of mine, Linda, had an experience that changed my mind and attitude towards these "intruders".
Last winter, Linda went through a very messy divorce and was very depressed. So she quit her job and left Los Angeles, where she encountered her ex-husband in college. She flew to Boston on the east coast of the US. Later, she settled in a new neighborhood in East Boston. However, shortly afterwards, the company where she worked went bankrupt(破产). Suffering a series of bitter blows. she fell ill, a severe case of flu. She had to stay at home for the whole week, feeling extremely bad and hopeless.
Early one morning, Linda lay in bed, feeling painful all over. Then all of a sudden, there was an upsetting knock on her front door. Struggling out of the bed, she dragged herself to the window. There, outside, she saw a young lady carefully holding some leaflets(传单)and a TV set model. She knew of a large TV set establishment nearby and assumed a message was about to be gently delivered. "This is the last thing I need today." She muttered to herself and hesitantly opened the door.
Coughing bitterly, Linda stuck her head out. "Excuse me, madam…" the young lady said with a smile. "I'm sorry but I am not the slightest bit interested in any TV whatever." Linda interrupted her impatiently. "As a matter of fact, I am feeling terribly awful." "Is there anything I can do for you, madam?" the young lady asked with concern. "No thanks, just leave me alone." Linda then shut the door in her face. The young lady politely turned and left in silence.

    One possible version:
A few hours later, another knock. Linda glanced out of the window and to her surprise, there at the door was the same lady, back again. Really annoyed this time, Linda opened the door but before she could speak, with a concerned look on her face, the young lady handed Linda a warm pot, saying, "I'm so sorry I disturbed you earlier. I thought you may like this homemade chicken soup. Hopefully it might make you feel a little better. "(74)
Linda was surprised by this lovely action. Being new to the area, she didn't know any neighbors, so the gesture was all the more appreciated. She could only smile embarrassedly and sincerely thanked her. With that, the lady left. After she related this story to me, I thought about how touching this deed really was. Especially in today's world where, sadly, kindness and thoughtfulness seen so rare. I also realized that thinking about others and showing kindness is the real meaning of love.(76)

Many years ago, I had a friend named Jonathan who lived only a few houses down the street. He was a cool kid and a real friend and in retrospect(回想) I can see he had all the usual qualities and hang-ups of a typical boy. He was fun to be with because of his innocent enthusiasm, and he knew all the best places to hang out in the neighborhood.
The best part about Jonathan, though, was his dog. This is not to say that my friend was any less memorable than his pet, but that dog had a very special quality. A friendly Labrador that never met anyone he didn’t like, or immediately want to lick, Bowzer was born without any vocal chords (声带). He simply couldn’t bark though he behaved just like any other dog.
Even though he couldn’t make any sounds, Bowzer surely made his presence known anyway. We couldn’t play a pickup baseball game in the neighborhood park without an extra infielder, outfielder, base runner, or bellboy running around on four paws. It looked like his life depended on bumping into every single player on the field, regardless of which team that player played on. For all of us, it became an accepted part of our playtime that Bowzer would somehow be involved in whatever activity we decided on.
Then, one day, something terrible happened to Jonathan. His parents were called away to the hospital because his grandmother was ill, and so Jonathan was left at home by himself. Two men had chosen that house for an unannounced visit.
Jonathan was in his bedroom and heard the noise from the break-in, and because of panic, he didn’t scream for help. Bowzer was in the bedroom, and heard the noise as well, but because of his birth defect(缺陷), he couldn’t make a sound. As Jonathan read a book, the robbers made their way through the entire house and probably figured that no one was home.

    One possible version:
One of the robbers opened the door to Jonathan’s bedroom, and was frightened to find a boy in the bed. The robber was even more frightened to discover a fifty-pound Labrador flying at him. Bowzer couldn’t bark, but that didn’t mean he did not have teeth or that he did not intend to take as big a bite out of that robber as he could. With an angry dog chewing on his arm, the robber began shouting in pain. The second robber suddenly appeared, and that’s when Jonathan saw the gun. The last thing he remembers is hearing one gunshot.
Luckily, Jonathan survived that horrific gunshot without any physical injuries, and he loved his dog more afterwards. Bowzer protected his master in his own way. Just like on the baseball field, he responded swiftly and successfully bit the arm that held the gun. That gunshot, originally aiming at Jonathan, unfortunately went through one leg of Bowzer, causing him unable to run. Luckily, the police arrived just in time to arrest the robbers. Life came back to normal. Jonathan still hang out with his friends a lot, but he never leaves Bowzer at home alone. He takes him wherever he goes.

I met Connie the day she was admitted to the hospice ward, where I worked as a volunteer. Her husband, Bill, stood nervously nearby as she was transferred from the gurney(轮床)to the hospital bed. Although Connie was in the final stages of her fight against cancer, she was cheerful and always smiled. We got her settled in and then asked if she needed anything.
“Oh, yes,” she said, “would you please show me how to use the TV? I enjoy the soaps so much and I don't want to get behind on what's happening.” Connie was a romantic. She loved soap operas, romance novels and movies with a good love story. As we became acquainted, she confided how frustrating it was to be married 32 years to a man who often called her “a silly woman.”
“Oh, I know Bill loves me,” she said, “but he has never been one to say he loves me, or send cards to me.” She sighed and looked out the window at the trees in the courtyard. “I’d give anything if he’d say ‘I love you,’ but it‘s just not in his nature.”
Bill visited Connie every day. In the beginning, he sat next to the bed while she watched the soaps. Later, when she began sleeping more, he paced up and down the hallway outside her room. Soon, when she no longer watched television and had fewer waking moments, I began spending more of my volunteer time with Bill.
He talked about having worked as a carpenter. He and Connie had no children, but they’d been enjoying retirement by traveling, until Connie got sick. Bill could not express his feelings about the fact that his wife was dying.
One day, over coffee in the cafeteria, I got him on the subject of women and how we need romance in our lives; how we love to get sentimental(柔情蜜意) cards and love letters.
“Do you tell Connie you love her?” I asked (knowing his answer), and he looked at me as if I was crazy.
“I don’t have to,” he said. “She knows I do!”
“I’m sure she knows,” I said, reaching over and touching his hands rough, “but she needs to hear it, Bill.”
We walked back to Connie’s room. Later, I saw Bill sitting by the bed. He was holding Connie’s hand as she slept. The date was February 12.
Two days later I walked down the hospice ward at noon. There stood Bill, leaning up against the wall in the hallway, staring at the floor. I already knew from the head nurse that Connie had died at 11 A.M..

When Bill saw me, he allowed himself to come into my arms for a long time. His face was wet with tears and he was trembling. Finally, he leaned back against the wall and took a deep breath. “I have to say something,” he said. “I have to say how good I feel about telling her.” Bill stopped to blow his nose. “I thought a lot about what you said, and this morning I told her how much I loved her... and loved being married to her. You should have seen her smile!"
I went into the room to say my own goodbye to Connie. There, Connie lying still, seemed to fall into deep sleep. On the bedside table was a large Valentine card from Bill. You know, the sentimental kind that says, “To my wonderful wife... I love you.” In the dim light, I seemed to find a light smile at the corner of Connie’s eyes. I was convinced that she must leave without regret for at the last moment of life she felt the romance of his beloved husband. It’s never too late to say “I LOVE YOU!”

Amanda felt as gray as the sky outside when she looked across the table at her three-year-old sister. Li sat on a booster scat, drinking from her sippy cup. Wondering why Li was still afraid of her, Amanda took a cookie off her plate and held it out to Li, “Want a bite?”
As soon as Li saw Amanda reaching over, her eyes widened. She jumped down from her seat and raced to her room. What an annoyance! Amanda complained to Mom that she had thought being a big sister would be fun. Mom took Amanda’s hand reminding her that Li was in a new country with a new family and how scared she might be.
“Honey, she is still getting used to you,” Mom added. “It’s only been two weeks.”
Over a year ago, Amanda’s parents said that they were adopting a daughter from China, and Amanda had danced with excitement. She’d dreamed of taking her sister to the park, reading books to her, and teaching her to ride a bicycle. That hadn’t happened, though. In the weeks since their trip to China, Li had only let their mom and dad near her. Amanda had drawn pictures for her, read to her, and made funny faces, but none had worked. Whenever she got close, Li ran away.
“I just wish I knew how to help her,” Amanda said to herself, thinking of Li’s frightened eyes. As she sat onto the couch, she turned on the TV and began to watch a cartoon about a dog and a cat. After a few seconds, Amanda realized that the cartoon was in another language. The show looked funny, but she didn’t understand any of it. She frowned, turning off the TV. It reminded her of when they were in China. She had got frustrated when people talked in Mandarin, the language spoken in Li’s province.

    Para 1:
“That’s it.” Amanda sped to Li’s room. She gathered all her courage to ask Li in Mandarin whether she would like to see a cartoon with her. For the first time ever, Li nodded her head in delight, excitement shining from her eyes. Although Amanda was nearly at a loss to understand what the cartoon was about, Li spared no effort to make the program come across. Both sisters were immersed in the warmth between them.
    Para 2:
Mom came to the door and found them sitting side by side. Happiness welled up from the bottom of her heart. Not in her wildest dream could she imagine that her two beloved daughters would get along well with each other. It was not until mom patted the two on the back that they realized mom’s presence. Mom was delighted to see the special bonds created between her daughters. With sunlight streaming into the room, the family were in the seventh heaven.

Long ago in Ethiopia(埃塞尔比亚) a woman named Leeya married a man who had a son. Try as Leeya might, she could not seem to spark a connection with(建立关系) the child. After several months of this, Leeya didn't know what to do.
Now in Leeya's village there was a medicine man, a healer. After Leeya came up to the healer's hut, she introduced herself and cried." 'Make me a potion (药剂). Anything! Whatever it takes to get this child to respond to me."
The medicine man looked her in the eye and said. " This is not the same as fixing a broken bone. There is a potion that will change the child's behavior toward you. But you must bring me a whisker (胡须)from a live lion. ” Such a thing is not possible! How could she get a whisker from a live lion?
The next day, she left the house. Leeya went to a place where a lion was known to live. She walked up to a safe distance, set a bowl of meat down on the grass, stepped away quickly and hid herself carefully. A lion indeed lived there, and watching her away, approached the bowl to enjoy the meat.
Every day, she did this and so did the lion. Until one morning the lion was sitting next to the empty bowl when she arrived, waiting for her. This time she sat and petted its thick fur. " Actually," she thought, it is a rather friendly creature, when you get to know it. ” Finally she quickly cut off a whisker, careful not to hurt the lion in any way. "Thank you, my gentle friend," she said.

    Paragraph l:
Quickly, she ran to the medicine man's hut. Holding the whisker tight in her hand, she cried, "I have it! I have the lion's whisker!". The healer asked her how she did it. She explained the steps and handed him the whisker with pride. The healer looked at it with care. Then he walked over to the fire and threw it in, where it burned up right away to a crisp.
    Paragraph 2:
"What have you done?!" Leeya cried. "What it took for me to get that!" "Leeya," said the old doctor softly, "you don't need the whisker. Tell me whether this child is really more dangerous than a lion. If a wild beast will respond to your patience and loving care, don't you think a child who misses his mother will, too?" Leeya was shocked, but she thought maybe by the time she got back home, she knew what she could do.

Holidays are not necessarily for fun or rest. Doing something meaningful can also gain special pleasure. When the final bell rang, the students were reminded that there was no school on Monday—the Labor Day. “Enjoy your extra day off,” said the teacher to her class.
An extra day of fun suited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus dropped Kayla off, she ran into the house happily.
“How was school, Kayla?” asked her mom.
“It was great, Mom. I am excited about no school on Monday. ”
“You just started back to school two weeks ago. Already in need of a break, huh?” asked Kayla’s mom with a laugh.
Kayla slept in the next morning. Saturday was her favorite day of the week. It rained most of the day, so Kayla enjoyed playing video games inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and they played basketball for several hours.
Then it was Labor Day, you know, the extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to. But Kayla was awakened early that morning by her dad. He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day, the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house. Kayla couldn’t believe it. This was a holiday. A day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Kayla wiped her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.
“Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let’s get a move on, ”said Kayla’s mom. As she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla asked her parents,
“Are you serious about working today? Isn’t Labor Day a holiday?”
“Yes, Kayla. It is, ”replied her dad. “But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day was observed in the first place. ”

She knew it was a hard task, which needed a lot of tiring, careful and patient work. She has begun the work with great unwillingness.
    Paragraph 2:
But things began to change as she was doing the chores. Brushing the puppy, she found it was a lot of fun with so many soap bubbles. Then it was on to yard work where Kayla helped to pick up sticks. She pretended the small sticks were basketballs, and shot them into a large trash can. So the work was done with great pleasure. Kayla felt proud to see how much better the yard looked. When she finished her meaningful chores, Kayla enjoyed relaxing in her tree house. The lemonade tasted wonderful after a hard day of work.

A wealthy man and his son liked to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire these great works of art.
When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. Unfortunately he died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was in deep sorrow for his only son.
About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said,“Sir, you don't know me. I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life.”“He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and killed him instantly.”“He often talked about you and your love of art.” The young man held out that package.“I know this isn't much.”“I'm not a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.”
The father opened the package. It was a picture of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in surprise at the way the soldier captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that tears welled up in his own eyes. He thanked the young man and offered to pay for the painting.“Oh, no, sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It's a gift.”
The father hung the picture on the wall. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.
The man died a few years later. There was to be a great auction(拍卖) of his art collection. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having the opportunity to purchase one for their collection.

Being a poor man, it was all he could afford. “We have $10, who will bid $20?” No response. “Going once, twice, sold for $10!” “Now the auction is over!” The auctioneer laid down his hammer and explained, “When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told that only the painting of the son would be auctioned. And whoever purchased the picture of the son would receive all the father’s possessions, including the paintings.”

It all began when my younger brother, Chris, and I went over to Aunt Barbara and Uncle Howard's for Thanksgiving. My aunt and uncle live on a farm at the opposite end of town, and Chris and I love going there.
We live on a farm, too and we had to do the morning chores before we left. When we finally got to my aunt and uncle's, we saw Uncle Howard and Dad cleaning out the turkey coop before dinner. We asked Uncle Howard a lot of questions about turkeys. He must have been impressed, because when we were finished, he winked at my dad and handed me one turkey egg.
“You kids put this under a setting hen,” he said, “and in twenty-five days, you'll have one turkey!”
We were so excited that we nearly dropped the egg on the way home. We both stuffed ourselves at dinner and rushed to tend to our egg.
We put this egg under an old hen, and every day Chris and I would check to see if they'd hatched yet. Twenty-five days seemed like forever. Finally, on the twenty-sixth day, Chris and I walked into the coop after school to find the old hen scratching on the floor. Behind her waddled one ball of fluff, falling over his feet and looking sort of bewildered. We named the little chick Timothy.
Timothy grew and grew, gorging himself on the feed we threw out. He stayed mostly to himself, ignoring the chickens. Mom kept telling us not to get too attached to Timothy, because we were going to have him for Thanksgiving. But we never paid too much attention to what that really meant.
Then, one day toward Thanksgiving, Dad penned Timothy up and said, “We are going to make this nice, plump bird for our Thanksgiving dish." After Dad turned and walked away, Chris's face began to pucker and he started to cry.
“Don't worry, Chris,” I said comfortingly. “We'll save Timothy, somehow.”

    One possible version:
    Para 1:
I then had an idea when I thought of the small cave in the woods. It was a cave that Chris and I discovered during one of our little adventures. Well hidden beneath the bushes and leaves, the cave must be the safest place for Timothy's temporary escape. I told Chris about the idea of sneaking Timothy out and hiding him in that secret cave. Chris pondered for a while and nodded. With determined minds, we carried out the plan and I managed to take Timothy away while Chris helped to distract mother.
    Para 2:
However, Mom soon found Timothy missing, and Dad sent us out to look for him. "What are we supposed to do now?" Chris asked, "Should we just pretend to search for a while and then return home?" Yet the fact that Timothy was hidden by us shall be revealed sooner or later. To ensure Timothy's ultimate safety, the optimal option is to tell Dad the truth and plead for Timothy's life. So we went to the cave, took Timothy back home, and told Dad everything. To our delight, Dad wasn't too angry, and agreed to give up his idea of having Timothy for the Thanksgiving dish. Timothy had his life saved! That was a Thanksgiving without a turkey, but we had a great evening, with Timothy falling sound asleep by our side.

The story of my new family member
We found a lonely dog a few weeks ago, walking along the road in the countryside. All of a sudden, he was jumping on cars, and at the same time we thought maybe his family was camping somewhere in the neighboring areas. As a consequence we passed him by without hesitation. A few hours later, on our return trip, he was still in the same place, again and again, making an attempt to get people to stop for him. When he caught sight of us approaching, he lay down in the middle of the road, so we failed to get around him.
My father braked hard, pulled up and looked around for a few minutes, trying to figure out whether anyone around from whom he had been separated. After getting off the car, we checked the dog carefully. It didn’t appear so. Then we took a good look at the poor but cute dog. He gazed at us eagerly with gloomy eyes. We circled around him in a total silence. We had an overwhelming desire to find out what was wrong with him. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any clues. He had no collar and he was really too thin. Eventually we decided that he had been abandoned. We showed great sympathy for the poor dog. How helpless he was on such an occasion! He was homeless and he had no one to rely on.
On seeing the scene, we couldn’t help begging my parents to raise him. My mother agreed excitedly, “I love this lovely dog. How poor he is! It is high time that we should bring him home.” She stared at the dog with tears welling up in her eyes. We knew my mother was willing to adopt the dog because she was so sweet and she loved dogs very much. My father thought it was dangerous to raise a dog due to the fact that we were too young.

So we fed him a lot over the course of the next two weeks striving to look after him with the hope that he would get stronger. Unfortunately, all our efforts were in vain. He was still very thin.
We took him to the vet, who said the dog appeared to be in good health. The vet guessed the dog was about two years old. He gave the dog all the required shots and sent us on our way. “Amazing! The dog is healthy.” My mother said in an excited voice. So thrilled were we that we headed home immediately. We did love our new family member. The dog was a sweet companion to our family, who was a quick learner and knew how to respond to different instructions. We learned a lesson from the experience that kindness and sympathy made a big difference to our life.

I was busy with my work when I noticed a very untidy man standing in the hall. He looked lost and possibly homeless, or maybe even drunken because he was unsteady on his feet. He made his way over to me and I asked if I could help him. He looked at me for a few minutes and thanked me for not judging him like everyone else. He finally said yes as he gave me some old papers. He asked if I could make him a copy of his military paperwork.
As I made the copies he told me that he became injured in the war. I took a deep breath and simply replied, “Thank you for your service.”
Then I noticed he was holding a small brown paper bag tightly. The bag was dirty so I asked him if he would like a plastic bag for his paperwork. He nodded and then asked me to hold out my hand. As I opened my hand he carefully placed two items in my hand. My eyes were filled with tears. This wonderful man had just placed his Purple Heart and a Silver Star into my hand. I gave him a salute just like a real soldier.
I thanked him, one of the nation’s heroes, for his service again. He smiled and carefully placed his items back in his bag and started to walk away. I saw him take a few dollars from his pocket. He turned back and asked if we had a vending machine so he could get some cookies.
I told him the right direction, but after looking at his money he put it back in his pocket and started to walk off the wrong way. I walked to him and asked if I could buy him some cookies. He refused, saying he didn’t want a handout and that he would eat something for lunch when he got home.

    One possible version:
    Paragraph 1:
I couldn't let the hero go hungry. I said, “Sir, I know you don't take any handout. But can I buy our nation's hero lunch for his service?” He was surprised for a minute and did not refuse this time. I walked outside with him and into a park near my office. He asked if he could just sit in the park while I got his lunch. He didn't want anyone making fun of him, so I ran to the nearest shop and bought his lunch.
    Paragraph 2:
Then I rejoined him in the park. I sat down with him for only a few minutes because I needed to work. He thanked me over and over for my kindness and for not judging him like everyone else. I hugged him and then he stood up and gave me a formal salute. Tears flowed freely down my face. I told him it was an honor to meet one of our nation's heroes. I would never forget the lesson this total stranger taught me that day.

I felt so nervous. It was the day of my interview. I woke up early just to make sure I would have time to get prepared. It felt like a normal Monday, but for me, this day was very important. There was a lot of pressure.
After showering, I put on the outfit I had carefully chosen and laid out the night before. I looked at my reflection in the mirror. “You can do this,” I encouraged myself. I ate breakfast and fed my cat. I made my way to the bus stop and waited patiently. Aside from the rapid tapping of my right foot, no one could tell that I was so nervous.
When I arrived at my stop, I walked to the office. The building was so tall and I felt small in its shadow. But I also felt hopeful. This will be a great opportunity, I thought. And what is there to lose? Looking down at my watch, I noticed that I was early. This allowed plenty of time to review my resume (简历) and further prepare myself for the interview.
The doors of the building were impressive, all steel and glass and very modern.
When I walked in, someone showed me the waiting area and offered me a cup of coffee. After a few moments, a man in a nice suit told me to join him. As we walked toward the elevators, I began to feel anxious. The palms of my hands began to sweat. It seemed like an hour had passed before I heard the “ding” of the elevators opening.
We got into the elevator, full of men and women dressed to the nines.
“It’s quite a large office,” the man said to me. I chuckled nervously. I could feel myself getting warmer. I couldn’t wait to hear that comforting “ding” that signaled an escape.
As the elevator climbed, I again nervously checked my watch. Just as I looked down, it happened.
    Paragraph 1:
The elevator came to a stop between floors.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
I thought that this must be the worst interview ever.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Version 1
The elevator came to a stop between floors. My nervousness turned into fear at once. But I immediately realized that it was better to act than to just stand. First, I pressed the emergency button. Then I asked people to lean their backs against the wall of the elevator and adjust their breathing. But suddenly, a man jumped up and down irritably. “What a terrible elevator!” he said angrily. I rushed to stop him. “Please stop! It could be very dangerous. We should calm down and wait for help!” Fortunately, everyone calmed down then. We just waited and waited. I felt anxious and checked my watch.
I thought that this must be the worst interview ever. Obviously, I would be late, and I thought that the interviewers couldn’t be in a good mood. Finally, the rescuers arrived, and as soon as the door opened, I prepared to run to the office. But all of a sudden, a hand rested on my shoulder. I turned around and saw the man smiling at me. “Don’t worry, young man. You’ve done a good job. Congratulations on passing the interview.” I chuckled in surprise.
    Version 2
The elevator came to a stop between floors. Not knowing what was wrong, everyone in it got nervous quickly. Someone pressed the emergency button, and we were told that it would take the rescue team at least an hour to complete the repair work, which meant we had to be trapped in this narrow and hot space, waiting. Hearing this, people were anxious, and I couldn’t help worrying about the interview. With the clock ticking, I fell into desperation.
I thought that this must be the worst interview ever. I was so frustrated that my well-prepared resume wouldn’t work. Just when I gave up hope, the beautiful “ding” sound set me free from those messy thoughts. A receptionist in a suit stopped me after I had stepped out of the elevator and informed me of another interview opportunity because of the incident. At that moment, I could hardly describe my excitement. Life is just like a box of chocolates, and we never know what we will get. So don’t quit hoping even in the face of difficulty.
