My sister Alice and I have been trying to get people to stop dropping cigarette (香烟) butts (烟头) for seven years. One day, we were walking in our hometown and saw hundreds of cigarette butts on the ground. They made the town look so ugly that we decided to start a group to make people stop dropping butts. We called it “No Butts About It”.
At first, we drew pictures with “The Earth is not your ashtray (烟灰缸)” written on them. We put the pictures around our hometown—in parks, by beaches, and along roads. We wanted to make people understand that dropping butts hurts the environment. Most smokers don’t think that dropping butts hurts the Earth. But it does, and all rubbish does!
Later, we wrote to companies and asked them for money to help us. We used the money to buy ashtrays to give to smokers. We wanted smokers to carry the ashtrays with them so they didn’t have to drop butts.
At the moment, we are trying to get cigarette companies to put an ashtray in each pack of cigarettes. Some companies want to do it. Many people have started to join our group since it began. Today there are 45 other “No Butts About It” groups in America.
Now there even groups in England, Australia, and India! Many newspapers have written about my sister and me over the last seven years. And we have won many prizes for what we do. But we are not interested in prizes. We just want to make the Earth a better and cleaner place for animals, plants and people.

Eggs are a common ingredient. They’re at the center of the age-old question, “What came first, the chicken or the egg?” and the classic idiom, “Egg someone on.” And, most fascinatingly, they’re the subjects of art, film and fashion.
From Jean-Baptiste Greuze’s painting “Broken Eggs” and Claude Monet’s painting “Still Life with Eggs” to Giovanni Battista Recco’s “Still Life with Chickens and Eggs”, there’s no shortage of egg illustrations. Within the field of art, eggs are a complex theme due to their significance in Christian cultures and mythology.
Simply put, an egg is more than just food—it is “a symbol and a shape-shifter.. . an industry and an inspiration, a cross-cultural expression of rebirth and potential,” according to a book called “The Gourmand’s Egg. A Collection of Stories and Recipes”.
Written by David Lane and Marina Tweed of the contemporary food and culture journal “The Gourmand”, the latest publication explores this phenomenon through a collection of images, stories and recipes focused on eggs. There’s also a section devoted to egg accessories, further illustrating how the egg became so remarkable in culture.
Perhaps the earliest mythological subject of eggs is the world egg, which thinks that the universe came into existence via a hatched (孵化) egg. Eggs then became a symbol of celebration. This eventually became the basis of classic Easter traditions.
Eggs were first showcased in art during the Renaissance. Take for example Piero della Francesca’s Breru Madonna, in which the hanging egg is a symbol of both creation and purity. There’s also Hieronymous Bosch’s oil painting “The Garden of Earthly Delights”, which shows yet another floating unhatched egg that is “a symbol of unrealized hope, or hidden power.”
As “The Gourmand’s Egg” wrote, “The egg is a cinematic chameleon(变色龙). It has been a symbol of brotherly love, a Freudian red flag, a symbol of life. ”
Additionally, “as in so many pictures, the egg often features not only as an everyday foodstuff but as a container of countless meanings.”
    8. Why does the author list some paintings in paragraph 2?
    A. To appeal to the readers’ attention.
    B. To give examples of best painted eggs.
    C. To prove there are many paintings about eggs.
    D. To show the egg subject makes many famous paintings.
    9. What is covered in David Lane and Marina Tweed’s new book?
    A. The culture of eggs.
    B. Skills of egg hatching.
    C. The kinds of eggs.
    D. Types of egg containers.
    10. What does the egg stand for in Bosch’s painting?
    A. Life. B. Potential. C. Love. D. Purity.
    11. What is the author’s purpose of writing this text?
    A. To sell a newly-published book.
    B. To discuss famous paintings about eggs.
    C. To introduce different egg cooking techniques.
    D. To show the complex meaning of eggs in works of art.
C 9. A 10. B 11. D
根据文章第一段“And, most fascinatingly, they’re the subjects of art, film and fashion.(而且,最令人着迷的是,它们是艺术、电影和时尚的主题。)”可知,鸡蛋是艺术、电影等领域的创作主题;然后第二段“From Jean-Baptiste Greuze’s painting “Broken Eggs” and Claude Monet’s painting “Still Life with Eggs” to Giovanni Battista Recco’s “Still Life with Chickens and Eggs”, there’s no shortage of egg illustrations. (从让-巴蒂斯特·格鲁兹的《破蛋》和克劳德·莫奈的《鸡蛋静物》到乔瓦尼·巴蒂斯塔·雷科的《鸡和蛋的静物》,鸡蛋插画从不匮乏。)”介绍了几个以鸡蛋为主题的画作,由此推断作者列举这些画作是为了说明有许多关于鸡蛋的画作,进而支持“鸡蛋是很多艺术作品的主题”这一观点。故选C。
    【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Written by David Lane and Marina Tweed of the contemporary food and culture journal “The Gourmand”, the latest publication explores this phenomenon through a collection of images, stories and recipes focused on eggs. There’s also a section devoted to egg accessories, further illustrating how the egg became so remarkable in culture.(由当代美食文化杂志《美食家》的大卫·莱恩和玛丽娜·特威德撰写的最新出版物通过一系列以鸡蛋为主题的图片、故事和食谱来探索这一现象。还有一个部分专门介绍鸡蛋的配件,进一步说明了鸡蛋在文化中是如何变得如此引人注目的。)”可知,大卫·莱恩和玛丽娜·特威德撰写的新书中提到了有关鸡蛋的故事、食谱以及以鸡蛋为主题的图片,这些都展现的是有关鸡蛋的文化。故选A。
根据倒数第三段“There’s also Hieronymous Bosch’s oil painting “The Garden of Earthly Delights”, which shows yet another floating unhatched egg that is “a symbol of unrealized hope, or hidden power.”(还有希勒姆·博斯的油画《世俗的快乐花园》,这幅画展示了另一个漂浮的未孵出的蛋,它是“未实现的希望或隐藏的力量的象征”。)”
    D
For years, you’ve been told that stress can be deadly and is something to be avoided. Therefore, an anxious situation is often accompanied by a sense of fear. However, recent studies suggest that stress-related harmful effects on your health are not unavoidable.
One study followed 30,000 people over eight years and measured their stress levels. Those who believed that stress is harmful died at a higher rate than those who were under stress but didn’t acknowledge the so-called negative effects. The latter group was healthier, and many of them lived long, happy lives.
Stressful feelings start out in a small region of the brain that affects how people feel emotions, especially fear. The small region is very sensitive to possible threats. When it senses danger, it alerts the brain, and feelings of fear or stress can result. These feelings give people a warning message when they need to pay attention and when they need to take action. For instance, when the sight of a speeding car triggers (触发) the region to release a lightning-fast message, we know immediately to move out of the way!
Another study carried by Health psychologist Dr. McGonigal found a link between stress and the amount of sympathy people showed to others. Researchers tracked 1,000 adults, their descriptions of the level of stress in their lives and the amount of time spent helping others. With each major stressful event, such as a family tragedy or financial crisis, the risk of dying increased by 30 percent. But for the group who spent time helping others, there was no increase in stress-related deaths, even for those who had faced their own personal tragedies. According to Dr. McGonigal, “Chasing meaning is better for your health than trying to avoid discomfort. Go after what it is that creates meaning in your life and then trust yourself to handle the stress that follows.”
    12. What does the study in paragraph 2 suggest?
    A. Stress caused many deaths over eight years.
    B. Stress won’t hurt you if you don’t acknowledge its presence.
    C. It is not the stress but our response to it that creates problems.
    D. Those without stress usually live long and happy lives.
    13. What do we know about stress from paragraph 3?
    A. Stress is harmful to the brain.
    B. Stress can cause danger.
    C. Stress can be a threat to us.
    D. Stress can lead to timely action.
    14. What can we learn from Dr. McGonigal’s study?
    A. People without stress spend more time caring others.
    B. Stress often causes a family tragedy or financial crisis.
    C. Stress can be avoided by helping others.
    D. People chasing meaning in life suffer less from stress.
    15. Which may be the best title for the text?
    A. Stress Is Not Your Enemy B. Man Can Conquer Stress
    C. We Need Remove Stress D. Stress Is Nearly Harmless
C 13. D 14. D 15. A
根据第二段“One study followed 30,000 people over eight years and measured their stress levels. Those who believed that stress is harmful died at a higher rate than those who were under stress but didn’t acknowledge the so-called negative effects. The latter group was healthier, and many of them lived long, happy lives.(一项研究对30000人进行了为期八年的跟踪调查,并测量了他们的压力水平。那些认为压力有害的人的死亡率高于那些处于压力下,但不承认所谓的有负面影响的人。后一组人更健康,他们中的许多人生活幸福且长寿)”可知,死亡率高的测试组中的人们认为压力有害,另一组则不认为压力有不良影响,由测试的研究结果可见,造成问题的不是压力,而是我们对压力的态度。故选C。
    【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“When it senses danger, it alerts the brain, and feelings of fear or stress can result. These feelings give people a warning message when they need to pay attention and when they need to take action. For instance, when the sight of a speeding car triggers (触发) the region to release a lightning-fast message, we know immediately to move out of the way!(当它感觉到危险时,它会提醒大脑,从而产生恐惧或压力的感觉。当人们需要注意和采取行动时,这些感觉会给他们一个警告信息。例如,当看到一辆超速行驶的汽车时,该区域会快速地释放出信号,我们立即知道要让开!)”可知,压力感(feelings of stress)会给人们发出信息,从而让人做出应变,及时采取行动。故选D。
    【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“With each major stressful event, such as a family tragedy or financial crisis, the risk of dying increased by 30 percent. But for the group who spent time helping others, there was no increase in stress-related deaths, even for those who had faced their own personal tragedies.(每发生一次重大压力事件,如家庭悲剧或金融危机,死亡风险都会增加30%。但对于那些花时间帮助他人的人来说,与压力相关的死亡人数没有增加,即使是那些曾经经历过个人悲剧的人)”及“Chasing meaning is better for your health than trying to avoid discomfort.(追求生活的意义比避免生活中的不幸对你的健康更好)”可知,追求生活意义的人承受的压力更小。故选D。
    【15题详解】
主旨大意题。本文通过科学研究得出压力本身不会给我们带来问题,我们对压力态度影响了生活,结合最后一句“Go after what it is that creates meaning in your life and then trust yourself to handle the stress that follows.(追求在生活中创造意义的东西,然后相信自己能够处理随之而来的压力)”可知,“Stress Is Not Your Enemy (压力不是你的敌人)”适合作为本文的标题。故选A。

由小标题“Manage yourself (管理好你自己)”可知本段的建议是管理好自己;上文“When you notice information overload, don’t ignore it and don’t panic. Say to yourself, ‘I’m in a new job and there is plenty to learn here. It’s okay to feel this way.’ (当你注意到信息过载时,不要忽视它,也不要惊慌。对自己说:‘我有了一份新工作,这里有很多东西要学。有这种感觉是可以的。’)”介绍了面对大量信息时,如何调整自己的心态和情绪;G选项“This self-talk helps normalize the situation and makes the emotions easier to handle (这种自我对话有助于使情况正常化,使情绪更容易处理)”承接上文,说明自我对话所起到的作用,选项中的“This self-talk”指代上文“Say to yourself, ‘I’m in a new job and there is plenty to learn here. It’s okay to feel this way.’ ”;下文“Remember that emotions can help you better understand yourself and your values. (记住,情绪可以帮助你更好地了解自己和自己的价值观。)”阐述了管理好情绪的重要性;由此可知,G选项符合本段主旨和语境。故选G。

(对于不需要的信息,我们的大脑就像垃圾管理系统一样,回收并删除它们。)”可知设空处提到是大脑,F选项“Our brain is like a clever piece of equipment that ‘takes in information’ (我们的大脑就像一台‘接收信息’的聪明设备)”符合语境,选项中的“takes in”与下文中的“keeps”和“store”表达的意义一致。故选F。
文章结构分析可知,设空处为此段的小标题;由下文“Organizations often have digital knowledge management systems to store and take important information. You can do the same to reduce brain burden. I recommend creating a Word or Google document in which you write down information that your brain doesn’t need to remember or store. (组织通常拥有数字知识管理系统来存储和获取重要信息。你也可以这样做来减轻大脑负担。我建议创建一个Word或Google文档,在其中写下大脑不需要记住或存储的信息。)”可知作者在本段建议运用Word或Google文档来帮大脑减负;B选项“Use technology to help (利用技术来帮助)”能够概括本段主旨,适合作为小标题。故选B。
    【20题详解】
上文“Multi-tasking isn’t good for you physically or mentally and is worse for your productivity and cognition (认知). (同时处理多项任务对你的身体和精神都没有好处,对你的工作效率和认知能力也更差。)”阐述了同时处理多项任务的弊端;E选项“For greater results, focus on one task for around 25 minutes (为了获得更好的效果,专注于一项任务25分钟左右)”针对上文所阐述的同时处理多任务的弊端提出了解决方法:专注于一项任务;下文“You can go for longer than that, but be sure to take a break. Focused activity is less taxing than multitasking, but you can’t keep working endlessly. (你可以坚持更长时间,但一定要休息一下。专注的活动比一心多用要轻松,但你不能无休止地工作。)”承接选项E,就专注于一项活动的时间进一步阐述,指出专注于一项工作时,时间不能太长,要注意休息;由此可知,E选项符合语境。故选E。

My pillow was wet because of tears that night before the winter holiday. An e-mail from my college’s financial aid office was still showing on my computer screen. I didn’t have the money to return the next semester(学期).
My roommates were comparing their new class schedules and planning how to share textbooks. They were another step closer to their dreams.
I was packing my dreams into boxes , along with blankets, pillows and towels. My dad helped carry my belongings into his old blue pickup truck and I hugged my friends and said goodbye. There were a mixture of best wishes and hopes for my return, but I knew my departure was probably permanent.
As the New Year passed, my social networks were filled with my classmates’ hopes for the new school season. They were returning to school and I was at home. I didn’t realize how lonely it would feel.
It was the first official day of school. I woke to the ring of the phone downstairs. As my father talked on the phone, I started searching for jobs in my area. Now that I wasn’t in school, I would need to start paying back my school loans.
The fact that I wouldn’t be returning to school became real. Ever since I had packed my things in my suitcase, there had been this small hope that maybe a miracle(奇迹)would happen. And I thought , “If someone helps me remain in college, I won’t disappoint him / her. I’ll study harder and repay his / her kindness someday!’’ But as I searched the job listings, I knew I had given up hope. No hero was going to come and save me.
The sound of the phone being hurriedly placed into the receiver and the thundering of my dad’s footsteps pulled me from my self-pity. “Son , pack up your stuff ; you’re heading back to school!” my father shouted. “The call was from the financial(财政的,金融的) aid office. The clerk on the phone said someone unknown had secretly donated money and paid all the rest of your college tuition.”

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
His eyes lit up as he took my empty suitcase. “Now get your stuff packed; we have to go!” he urged. Surprised and excited, I smiled, tears rolling down my cheeks. In the following chaos of throwing a variety of clothes, bedding, and books back into the old pickup truck, I called my roommates. They cheered, saying they would clean my bed and get ready for my arrival. Three hours later, Dad drove me to my dorm , where he gave me his best wishes and left.
Taking my pen and notebook,I started attending my first class. Sitting in the classroom again, I felt so happy and satisfied. I valued the college life more than before and studied harder. Months later, I graduated as an excellent student. And I managed to find a good job that was very well paid. Although I didn’t find out who had helped me get back to college, I repaid the kindness by annually donating part of my salary to my college’s financial aid office.
