Martin was returning to work in his London office after spending two weeks with his brother in New York. He was coming back with a heavy heart. It was not just that it was the end of a wonderful holiday; it was not just that he invariably suffered badly from jet lag(时差); it was that Monday morning always began with a team meeting and , over the months, he had grown to hate them.
Martin was aware that colleagues approached these meetings with hidden agenda(会议议 程); they indulged in(沉溺于)game playing ; and he knew that people were not being honest and open. The meetings themselves were bad enough---there was all the moaning afterwards at the meeting like “I could have improved on that idea, but I wasn’t going to say.”
As this morning’s meeting began, Martin prepared himself for the usual dullness and boredom. But, as the meeting progressed, he became aware of a strange background noise. At first, he thought that he was still hearing the engine noise from the aircraft that had brought him back to London. But as he concentrated on the noise, it became a little clearer.
He realized, to his amazement, that he could actually hear what they were thinking at the same time as they were speaking. What surprised him, even more than the acquisition of this strange power, was that he discovered that what people were saying was not really what they were thinking. They were not making clear their reservations. They were not supporting views which they thought might be popular. They were not contributing their new insights. They were not volunteering their new ideas.
Martin found it impossible not to respond to his new knowledge. So he started to make gentle interventions (干涉), based more on what he could hear his colleagues thinking than on what he could hear them saying. “So, John, are you really saying.....” “Susan, do you really think that?” “Tom, have you got an idea on how we could take this forward?” They looked at him, puzzled. In truth, he felt rather proud of his newly -acquired talent.
As the meeting progressed, it was clear to him that each member of the meeting was learning how to hear the thoughts of the others. The game playing started to fall away; people started to speak more directly; views became better understood; the atmosphere became more open and trusting.
The meeting ended. As people left the room, Martin found that he could still hear what they were thinking. “That was the best meeting we’ve ever had.” “All meetings should be like that,” “ In future, I’m going to say what I think.”

Dramas are usually called plays, and their creators are known as “playwrights” or “dramatists”. Some popular types of drama include comedy, tragedy, farce, opera and docudramas. Now, I’d like to tell you some popular types of drama.
Lighter in tone, comedies try to make the audience laugh and usually come to a happy ending. Comedies put unusual characters in special situations, causing them to do and say funny things. Comedies can also be sarcastic (讽刺的) in nature, creating fun serious topics. There are also several different types of comedy, including romantic comedy, a comedy of manners, and tragicomedy — plays in which the characters take on tragedy with humor while bringing serious situations to happy endings.
Tragedy is based on darker themes. Generally, tragedies show serious subjects like death, disaster, and human suffering in a way that makes the audience think. Hardly enjoying happy endings, characters in tragedies, like Shakespeare’s Hamlet, are often troubled by tragic character flaws (缺点) that finally lead to their death.
A farce is a type of drama in which characters overact and present physical humor. Examples of farce include the play Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett and the hit 1980 movie Airplane! written by David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams.
Opera is a type of drama which combines theater, dialogue, music, and dance to tell stories of tragedy or comedy. Since characters express their feelings through singing rather than dialogue, performers must be both skilled actors and singers. The tragedy La boheme by Giacomo Puccini, and the comedy Falstaff by Giuseppe Verdi are classic examples of opera.
A docudrama is a relatively new kind of drama. Docudramas talk about historic events or non-fictional situations. More often presented in movies and television than in live theater, popular examples of docudramas include the movies Apollo 13 and Twelve Years a slave.
6.What do we know about comedies?
A.They don’t talk about serious topics.
B.They usually don’t have sad endings.
C.There’re always some arguments in them.
D.There’re four kinds of comedies mentioned.
7.What is a big feature of characters in tragedies?
A.They are often sarcastic in nature.
    B.They usually have character weaknesses.
C.They usually suffer a lot before their death.
D.They are remembered by their ways of thinking.
8.How would people most probably react when watching plays like Waiting for Godot?
    A.Upset. B.Cheerful. C.Worried. D.Thoughtful
9.In dramas like La boheme, performers are required to ________.
A.say something funny B.present physical humor
C.tell stories through dialogue D.be good at acting and singing
10.Who would most probably love watching docudramas?
    A.Girls loving romantic stories.
    B.Children loving funny stories.
    C.People interested in fictional situations.
D.People interested in true events in history.

Utah is the second most wasteful states in the US. Everyone always complains about how much construction there is all the time— on campus you can’t walk ten steps without running into another pit— but no one seems to be doing anything about it. Every year the city has a surplus of money and they spent it on unneeded road construction. Instead, this money should be spent on developing Utah’s solar energy capabilities (能力).
People may think that solar power technology isn’t advanced enough to sustain (维持) an entire state year-round. However, Utah is one of the six states in the country getting more than enough sunlight to run completely on solar power every year according to Solar Nation. For reference, one might look at places similar to the Hotel at Oberlin in Ohio, a hotel remodeled in the summer of 2016 to run completely on solar power. Anywhere west of Ohio has no excuse for not using solar energy.
Many think it would be bad for the economy to switch to solar power because electrical workers would lose their jobs. But this isn’t necessarily true. They could transfer to solar companies. Considering how many panels (电池板,面板) would need to be built and installed (安装) and maintained, there’s plenty of work for electrical workers. Solar panel installation may be expensive at first, but as it stands currently, solar panels are expected to pay for themselves within 11 years of installation, saving solar panel owners up to $700 in electric bills per house in the first year.
Moreover, we, the humans of planet Earth, would never run out of solar energy. The sun will exist long after humanity goes. And while solar panels may be expensive, they cost the Earth much less than using coal and natural gas.
It’s bad enough that Utah is the most wasteful when it comes to the use of water. And the city is killing its citizens with air pollution. But when we have the physical capability of making changes that will ultimately save the environment and deepen our pocketbooks (财力、钱袋子), and we don’t make those changes, we’re actually lazy rather than being cautious.
11.Which of the following statements would the author agree with?
A.Roads in Utah should be repaired.
B.Money should be better used in Utah.
C.Construction is very important to Utah.

B.To show it is possible to use solar power in summertime.
C.To show solar power can be relied on year-round in Utah.
D.To prove many hotels are taking advantage of solar power.
13.According to Paragraph4, using solar energy can ________.
A.benefit the environment B.prevent waste in Utah
C.improve work efficient D.lead to many changes in Utah

On one day my grandma died, I went for a walk to clear my mind. The small purse I carried with me was a gift from her. The bag only weighted several pounds but it felt like I was dragging heavy luggage.
As I was walking, I spotted Mary who gave me an excited hug. She asked how I was. “How are you” is a question that can turn meaningless or meaningful, depending on how you answer it. I considered going the meaningless route. Then I remembered that she is a friend from church. We once celebrated an activity together. Maybe I could lean on her for some comfort. I explained that my grandma died and I was feeling in bad shape emotionally.
Mary expressed kind regards. Then she asked the question everyone asks when you tell them someone died, “Were you two close?” It’s the main standard that determines the appropriate size someone’s sadness can take. The answer to this question depends on how someone defines closeness. I tend to feel close to people I can have heart-to-heart with. I nodded to Mary and said, “Yeah, we were.”
She nodded back, playing her role in the cultural script (剧本)we all know. Mary gathered information about the funeral arrangements, and then we parted. Seeing her was a catalyst (催化剂) to my quickly getting in touch with my sorrow. I cried loudly on the street directly.
Later that night I texted my friend Roger to tell him what had happened. I expected a text back with sympathy. Instead, the phone rang. Soon he was asking me what my favorite song was. While I hesitated, he started singing the hymn, “It Is Well With My Soul.” He finished it and prayed for me over the phone. It really made me exhilarated. I felt that a heavy burden was removed. But I cried again because of the spiritual synchronization(同步). I didn’t share stories of my grandmother or try to explain my complicated emotions over the phone.
Then I realized that courtesy (客套话) is generally good practice, but it can’t compare to personalized, thoughtful communication. And that kind of pat statement really has no place if you want to make a real connection.
21.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.The author used to offer Mary advice to Mary.
B.The author and Mary enjoyed social activities.
C.The author and Mary often shared their secrets.
D.The author hesitated to turn to Mary for comfort.
22.Mary asked “Were you two close?” to ________.
A.judge how sad the author was
    B.determine what sadness it was
C.prove that they were close friends
D.see if the author needed comfort
23.From the fourth paragraph, we can know that ________.
A.Mary decided to attend the funeral
B.the author felt touched to see Mary
C.the author got no real comfort from Mary
D.Mary felt helpless about relieving the author’s pain
24.What does the underlined phrases “made me exhilarated” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Cheered me up B.Made me satisfied
C.Let me down D.Kept me down
25.What does the author mainly want to express in the passage?
A.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
B.Spiritual communication is better than courtesy.
C.Crying is an effective way to ease people’s pain.
D.It’s hard to recover from the pain of losing a loved one.

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone.
The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection.
The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.
The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Several says.
Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.
The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $199, developing on features. The U.S. is the first target market.
Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.
26.Which is one of the feature of the Kolibree toothbrush?

27.What can we learn from Serval’s words in Paragraph 3?
A.You will find it enjoyable to see a dentist.
B.You should see your dentist on a day-to –day basis.
C.You can brush with the Kolibree as if guided by a dentist.
D.You’d like a dentist to watch you brush your teeth every day.
28.Which of the following might make the Kolibree toothbrush fun?
A.It can be used to update mobile phones.
B.It can be used to play mobile phone games
C.It can send messages to other users
D.It can talk to its developers.
29.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.How Serval found out his kids lied to him.
B.Why Serval thought brushing teeth was necessary.
C.How Serval taught his kids to brush their teeth.
D.What inspired Serval to invent the toothbrush
30.What can we infer about Serval’s children?
A.They were unwilling to brush their teeth
B.They often failed to clean their toothbrushes.
C.They preferred to use a toothbrush with a dry head.
D.They liked brushing their teeth after Serval came home.

On Wednesday, two things happened. In Syria, 80 people were killed by government airstrikes. Meanwhile, in Florida, Elon Musk’s SpaceX successfully launched and fired a sports car into space. Guess which story has dominated mainstream news sites?
The launch of Musk’s Falcon Heavy rocket, the most powerful ever launched by a private company, went off successfully. Musk sent his cherry-red Tesla roadster running toward Mars, launching “a new space age”. The event attracted phenomenal publicity and made the rocket launch a masterstroke of advertising for Tesla.
Meanwhile, in Syria, where hundreds of thousands of refugees(难民) may be forced to return to unsafe homes, a UN human rights coordinator for Syria said despondently(沮丧地) that he was no longer sure why he bothers to videotape the effects of bombing, since nobody ever pays attention. He wondered what level of violence it would take to make the world care.
There is, perhaps, no better way to appreciate the tragedy of 21st-century global inequality than by watching a billionaire spend $90m launching a $100,000 car into space.
Musk said he wanted to participate in a space race because “races are exciting” and that while strapping his car to a rocket may be “silly and fun … silly and fun things are important”. Thus, anyone who mentions the huge waste the project involves, or the various social uses to which these resources could be put, can be dismissed as a killjoy.
But one doesn’t have to hate fun to question the justification for pursuing a costly new space race at exactly this moment. If we examine the situation honestly, it becomes hard to defend a project like this.
A mission to Mars does indeed sound exciting, but it’s important to have our priorities straight. First, perhaps we could make it so that a child no longer dies of malaria every two minutes. Or we could try to address the level of poverty in Alabama which has become so extreme that the UN investigator did not believe it could occur in a first-world country. Perhaps when violence, poverty and disease are solved, then we can head for the stars.
Many might think that what Elon Musk chooses to do with his billions is Elon Musk’s business alone. If he wanted to spend all his money on medicine for children, that would be nice, but if he’d like to spend it making big explosions and sending his convertible on a million-mile space voyage, that’s his right.
But Musk is only rich enough to afford these money-consuming projects because we have allowed social inequalities to arise in the first place. If wealth were actually distributed fairly in this country, nobody would be in a position to fund his own private space program.
Elon Musk is right: silly and fun things are important. But some of them are an indefensible waste of resources. While there are still humanitarian crises such as that in Syria, nobody can justify vast spending on rocketry experiments.
34.Why does the writer mention the two pieces of news at the beginning of the passage?
A.To illustrate the inequality of wealth distribution and the consequent inequality of attention distribution.
B.To highlight the significance of SpaceX’s successful launch of a rocket and a car into space.
C.To appeal to the government for more attention to the air strikes and refugee crisis in Syria.
D.To find out which news dominated the mainstream news sites.
35.Why did the UN human rights coordinator for Syria feel disappointed?
A.Because nobody appreciated his work and all the efforts he made.
B.Because the violence in Syria is not serious enough to make the world care.
C.Because however hard he tried, nobody seemed to care about the situation in Syria.
D.Because he had great difficulty videotaping the effects of bombing.
36.What is implied in Paragraph 6 and 7?
A.The space project of SpaceX cost the government too much money.
B.It kills the fun to question the justification of the pursuit of space programs.
C.Space programs are a waste of money that cannot be justified.
D.Addressing problems of violence, poverty and diseases should be our top priority.
37.What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
A.We should pay equal attention to space projects and solving social problems.
B.No private companies should be allowed to spend money in rocketry experiments.
C.The money and resources used in space projects could have been used to deal with various social problems.
D.Elon Musk should be blamed for misleading the public.

From the first use of the rocket to carry satellites into space to the setting up of space stations, human beings have been putting great effort into space research. And so far, we have achieved many successes. But there are still numerous tasks in front of us and we should not stop trying to progress.
The international space station is an important step we should take in space exploration. It is not only helpful but also essential. It provides a proper space environment for many experiments that we have wanted to do for a long time. It is also a base for the observations of the earth and the universe. It could also be an important base for later travel to the moon and Mars. In a word, if we want to explore space more, the first thing we should do is to set up a space station.
As the space station costs a lot of money, it is hard for one country alone to establish one. The USA seems to be the only country that has the ability to build a space station alone, and it has tried to do so, but not very successful. So it aggregated many other countries to work on it together. Though it is still extremely expensive, it is much cheaper than doing it alone. It is really a job that needs everyone’s effort and will benefit everyone.
But even so, the funds needed are still a big problem. As for the USA, it seems that it has too many things to spend its money on. Although it is the richest country in the world, it has much debt every year. It has to make arrangements about its finance, and try to find a balance in all these issues.
38.What is the author’s attitude towards building and developing the international space station? ________.
    A.Supportive. B.Doubtful. C.Critical. D.Negative
    39.From Paragraph 2 we learn that ________.
A.the necessity of building the international space station is not realized now
B.many experiments have been done in the international space station
C.the international space station is necessary for people to explore space more
D.people have traveled to Mars from the international space station
40.Which of the following is NOT a reason for countries’ cooperation in building the international space station? ________.
A.That it requires a lot of money.
B.That it needs everyone’ s effort.
C.That it will benefit every participating country.
D.That it is too far away from the earth.
41.The underlined word “aggregated” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by_________.
    A.united B.scolded C.allowed D.forbade
42.Which of the following aspects about building the international space station is NOT mentioned in the passage? ________.
    A.Difficulties. B.Cooperation.
    C.Significance. D.Specific arrangements.

When I was a high school student, a close friend went to New Zealand as an exchange student and I was very curious. I wasn’t able to become an exchange student myself, but I began talking to my parents about possibility of becoming a host family to see it. Our school had an active AFS (American Field Service) chapter, so we got information about hosting a student through AFS.
After further exploration, we decided to go for it. We received a student’s brief introduction We looked over the pictures and her family and read the introduction. Her name was Simone and she was three years older than me, one year older than my brother. This was our student!
After informing AFs that we’d accept the student, we had the opportunity to call her on the phone and began writing to her. The accents of the Australian and American English were so different that we had a very hard time communicating. Thankfully, reading and writing each other’s letters was not a problem.
AFS began making the arrangements for Simone to come to America for her year as an exchange student. In August, we picked Simone up at the airport in St. Louis. During the year of Simone’s stay, we had our ups and downs. At first the accents were difficult. The first Sunday she attended church services with us, she didn’t understand anything that was said. Her Australian accent was very thick and she said we spoke too fast for her to follow our words. We, on the other hand, thought she spoke too fast and was difficult to understand. Learning to live with someone new isn’t always easy, but we managed.

Laugh is infectious. The sound of roaring laughter is far more infectious than any cough or yawn. When laughter is shared, it unites people together and increases happiness and understanding. In addition to “the domino effect” of joy and amusement, laughter also produces healthy physical changes in the body. Humor and laughter strengthen your immune system, improve your energy, reduce pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free, and easy to use.
Laughter is a powerful cure to stress, pain, and disagreement. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh after a quarrel. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and ready to act.
With so many advantages, the ability to laugh easily and frequently is a great resource for defeating problems, improving your relationships, and supporting both physical and emotional health.
More than just a break from sadness and pain, laughter gives you the courage and strength to find new sources of meaning and hope. Even in the most difficult times, a laugh-or even simply a smile-can go a long way toward making you feel better. And laughter is really infectious-just hearing laughter trains your brain to smile and join in on the fun.
Laughter is your birthright and a natural part of life. Infants begin smiling during the first weeks of life and laugh out loud within months of being born. Even if you did not grow up in a family where laughter was a common sound, you can learn to laugh at any stage of life.
Begin by setting aside special times to seek out humor and laughter, as you might with working out, and build from there. Eventually, you’ll want to add humor and laughter into your life, finding it naturally in everything you do.

My mother, Marisol Torres, came with her family to Australia in the early 1960s. Then my parents’ marriage ended and Mum began the study of precious stones. Her interest in opals (猫眼石) took her to the New South Wales remote town of Lightning Ridge. There were no luxuries (奢华的享受), but she was closer to nature and had a chance to find black opals and make some money.
My mother was beautiful with dark hair and brown eyes, but she was also quiet and shy. Early in the Ridge years, she kept to herself, but later, she started going to the neighbourhood centre to make friends.
It was her dream to mine, but her get-rich-quick thinking was unrealistic. She was cheated and she was never very successful. But she kept a sense of humour and a charming smile.
Then, just as friendships began to blossom, she was diagnosed with cancer and had to return south for treatment. She had the intention of cooking Spanish food as special treat for her Ridge friends, but died too soon. In her honour, my aunt, Marisa, and I fulfilled (实现) her desire when we visited the Ridge in March last year.
People who mine (采矿) the Ridge come from a cross section of society, from lawyers to travels. Looks don’t mean much: it can be hard to tell who is millionaire and who is poor. Opals attracted Sebastian and Hanna Deisenberger to Lightning Ridge. They planned a two-year stay, but became permanent residents.
Then there’s Neil Schellnegger, 45, who moved to the area with his parents when he was a child. He lives with his son, Luke. Luke is a shy 19-year-old boy who enjoys helping his dad. They haven’t had much luck over the past couple of years, but their passion for opals conquers disappointment. They love the peaceful lifestyle.
Danny Hatcher, 38, is a second-generation miner and president of the Lightning Ridge Miners’ Association. He is an optimistic man, driven by the desire to find the perfect opal. “It’s magic,” he explains. “Once you start opal mining you don’t want to do anything else… There is always the potential for finding a million dollars. Nothing beats it.”
It’s a place where dreams—spiritual or material—can be fulfilled; a place, for one last bet in life.

In this world, if there exists something constantly miserable and intolerable to others, that’s having a character which is your master. No one has a temper naturally so good that it does not need attention and cultivation, and no one has a temper so bad, that, even by proper culture, it may not become pleasant. There are comers at every turn in life, against which we may run, and at which we may break out in impatience, if we choose.
One of the best disciplined tempers ever seen was that of a gentleman, Roger Sherman, who rose from a humble occupation to a seat in the first Congress of the United States. He made himself master of his temper and cultivated it as a great business in life. There are one or two instances which show this part of his character.
One day, after having received his highest honors, he was sitting and reading in his sitting room. A student, in a room close by, held a mirror in such a position as to pour the reflected rays of the sun directly in Mr. Sherman’s face. He moved his chair, and the thing was repeated. A third time the chair was moved, but the mirror still reflected the sun in his eyes. He laid aside his book, went to the window, and many witnesses of the rude behavior expected to see the ungentlemanly student severely punished. He raised the window gently, and then—shut the window blind!
I cannot help providing another instance of the power he had acquired over himself and always bearing the results of the behavior in mind. Mr. Sherman was one of those men who still maintained the forms of religion in their families. One morning he called them all together as usual to lead them in prayer to God. Mr. Sherman took his seat beside one of his children. The rest of the family were seated around the room. Besides these, some of the tutors of the college were boarders in the family and were present at the time. His aged mother occupied a corner of the room, opposite the place where the distinguished Judge sat.
He opened the Bible and began to read. The child seated beside him made some little disturbance, upon which Mr. Sherman paused and told him to be still. Again he continued but again he had to pause to scold the little offender, whose playful character would hardly permit it to be still. At this time he gently tapped its ear. The blow, if blow it might be called, caught the attention of his aged mother, who now with some effort rose from the seat and tottered across the room. At length, she reached the chair of Mr. Sherman, and in a moment, most unexpectedly to him, she gave him a blow on the ear with all the force she could gather. “There,” said she, “you strike your child, and I will strike mine.”
For a moment, the blood was seen mounting to the face of Mr. Sherman. But it was only for a moment and all was calm and mild as usual. He paused; he raised his glasses; he cast his eyes upon his mother; again it fell upon the book from which he had been reading. Not a word escaped him; but again he calmly pursued the service. Such a victory was worth more than the proudest one ever achieved on the field of battle.

Idling around all day long while wondering why you can’t succeed? Better stop wasting your time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow. The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.
You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem (自尊). Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their life. They are leaves tossed (摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.
You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for whatever happens in your life. Losers think that everything happens by accident while successful people realize that they are responsible.
Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we consciously choose to accept and believe. Thoughts and beliefs cause everything. Our actions are merely a result of habits ingrained in us over a period of time. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. We are responsible for either reinforcing (强化) good habits or kicking bad habits and consciously replacing them with consistently practiced good habits. All in all, you are what you choose to be, so please make an informed choice first.
If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing (培育) the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.
In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.
68.People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they .

Technological progress has transformed every aspect of my life. I bank online and learn online. Just like other young people, when I’m hungry and busy, I will order food through a food delivery app, especially during the pandemic. These apps are fast and convenient.
A survey of the food delivery service online conducted in the US shows that 26% of the people surveyed use food delivery service once a week, while 24% order food 2—3 times per week. Some have meals delivered even more often, with 8% ordering 6 times per week.
However, I deleted Uber Eats from my phone two months ago. Not because I didn’t like using it. I loved it. I can order precisely what I feel like eating. And I can have that hot meal delivered to my door within about 30 minutes with only a small fee. It’s the kind of on-demand service that used to be reserved for the ultra-wealthy. Now ordinary people, like me, lying on their couches, working late in their living rooms, or isolating themselves at home during the pandemic can enjoy it, too.
However, I was shocked when I knew that five delivery riders were killed in three months last spring. Some riders sometimes were paid at rates lower than the minimum wage or without much of the basic protection enjoyed by the rest of us. They were also doing their jobs in an unsafe working environment — our city streets. This is particularly the case in Sydney, where some major media organizations have complained about the construction of safe cycling infra-structure(基础设施)for decades and worse still, state governments have previously torn up bike paths.
So I deleted the app and haven’t used it, or any of its competitors, since then. I have no illusions that my standpoint will make a big difference. But I think our governments need to fight against the companies reshaping our lives and our communities for the worse to make our cities safer for everyone, including cyclists.

On my way back home, I waited at the crosswalk for the traffic light to change colours. A man dressed in a UCLA shirt stood next to me. We exchanged friendly smiles. His friend came by and commented that he was excited that it was Friday. The man replied that he had to work on the weekend. He shared, “I have two little kids at home. I am thankful for any work that I can get. ”
I smiled, as the man's words made me happy in a dark week of midterm exams and job interviews. As we made our way across the street, he told me he had been shot and had seven surgeries in the past couple of years. He called getting better a “vacation” because in that kind of situation, that was the only way he could deal with what had happened.
At the end of the crosswalk, before we left each other, he said, “Through life's terrible moments, you find life's greatest gifts.” I took a left. He and his friend took a right to the parking lot. I looked back at him, thankful that our short conversation had made my day. He looked at my way. We exchanged nods and smiles, the same exchange we first made when we stood by the crosswalk moments ago.
Though we never shared names, I will forever remember his story and his inspiring life. When people ask me what I love most about my university, I tell them about the creative professors and excited students. UCLA supports its students to follow their dreams, whatever that path may be. As a college senior, I am incredibly grateful for my college experience.
What I remember most about my university life are memories of smiles and life lessons. There was that night when a group of us watched the waves and waited for the sunrise, the time my professor and I discussed equal rights, the class in which my group members and I danced to our textbook reading. These are life stories that make me smile and teach me lessons.
You never know who may inspire you next. It may be the person standing next to you at the crosswalk or the student sitting next to you in class. Simple life stories and beautiful exchanges come with just a nod, a smile, and a crosswalk. You never know what you can learn from them, from courage to positive attitudes towards life.

Carl Allamby started his car repair business at the tender age of 19. Over the years, it had grown into two shops with 11 workers, but Allamby had become uneasy, longing for something more. Therefore, at the age of 34, he decided to go for his bachelor’s degree in business management.
After taking classes part-time over the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take biology to get his degree, which later turned out to be the best thing that ever happened. Biology classes reawakened a childhood dream that he had hidden somewhere deep within himself.
Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, Allamby was raised by his stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home goods door-to-door. His school didn’t offer the advanced science classes that might have led him on a premed (医学预科的) path. Even if it had, doing well in school could prove dangerous. “You could get into a lot of trouble just for being the class nerd (讨厌的人),” Allamby said. So he set aside the thoughts of becoming a doctor and started fixing cars instead.
But a different Carl Allamby walked into that biology class at age 39. He was ready to live his dream. With the support of his family he soon decided to skip business school to take science classes. Becoming a doctor was late and he would become a nurse instead, he reasoned. But Allamby’s chemistry professor told him “Why not a doctor? You have a great talent for the work. You will go a long way.” The professor was right and Allamby did very well.
In 2015, Allamby cut ties with his past, and then he started at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 2019, Carl Allamby became Carl Allamby, MD.He took a job in emergency medicine at Cleveland Clinic Akron General.
“How many people can do something so brand-new at such a late stage in their life?” he said. “My age and past career are all good reasons why I shouldn’t be here. And yet, here I am.”

C.It brought about positive transition in his life.

D.To show how Allamby struggled in his childhood.
85.What do we know from the chemistry professor’s words?
    A.He appreciated Allamby’s courage.
    B.He recognized Allamby’s capability.
C.He suggested Allamby should aim lower.
D.He thought Allamby was too old to be a doctor.
86.What does Allamby’s story mainly tell us?

Avoiding unseen food hazards (危害) is the reason people often check the dates on food packaging. And printed with the month and the year is often one of the following phrases: “best by”, “use by”, “best if used before”, “best if used by”, “guaranteed fresh until” and “freeze by”.
People think of them as expiration dates, or the date at which a food should go in the trash bin. But the dates have little to do with when food becomes less safe to eat. I am a microbiologist and I have studied the spread of bacteria (细菌) in food. A more science-based food dating system could make it easier for people to differentiate foods they can safely eat from those that could be hazardous.
It’s reported that in 2020 the average American household spent 12 percent of its income on food, but a lot of the food is simply thrown away, despite being perfectly safe to eat. And nearly 31 percent of all available food is never consumed. The current food dating system may be to blame for the problem.
It’s logical to believe that date labels are there for safety reasons, since the USA government enforces rules including printing nutrition and ingredient information on food packaging. The dates on those food packages, however, are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Rather came from food producers.
A food brand may survey consumers in a focus group to pick a “use by ” date that is six months after the product was produced because 60 percent of the focus group no longer liked the taste after six months. Smaller manufacturers of a similar food might play copycat and put the same date on their products.
One industry group, the Food Marketing Institute and Grocery Manufacturers Association, suggests that its members mark food “best if used by” to indicate how long the food is safe to eat, and “use by” to indicate when food becomes unsafe. But using these marks is voluntary and often causes consumer confusion.
A joint study by the Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic and the National Resources Defense Council recommends the elimination (取消) of dates aimed at consumers. Instead, it suggests manufacturers and distributors use “production” or “pack” dates, along with “sell by” dates, aimed at supermarkets and other retailers.
根据第一段前三句“Martin was returning to work in his London office after spending two weeks with his brother in New York. He was coming back with a heavy heart. It was not just that it was the end of a wonderful holiday;(马丁和他哥哥在纽约呆了两周后回到伦敦办公室工作。他怀着沉重的心情回来了。这不仅仅是一个美好假期的结束)”可知,马丁在纽约的两周假期是愉快的。故选C项。
2.细节理解题。根据第二段第一句“Martin was aware that colleagues approached these meetings with hidden agenda(会议议 程); they indulged in(沉溺于)game playing ; and he knew that people were not being honest and open.(马丁意识到同事们在参加这些会议时都有隐藏的议程;他们沉迷于游戏;他知道人们并不诚实和开放。)”
根据第五段的第二句“So he started to make gentle interventions (干涉), based more on what he could hear his colleagues thinking than on what he could hear them saying.(因此,他开始进行温和的干预,更多地基于他听到同事们在想什么,而不是他听到他们在说什么。)”和最后一句“In truth, he felt rather proud of his newly -acquired talent.(事实上,他为自己新获得的天赋感到相当自豪。)”
根据第六段“As the meeting progressed, it was clear to him that each member of the meeting was learning how to hear the thoughts of the others. The game playing started to fall away; people started to speak more directly; views became better understood; the atmosphere became more open and trusting.(随着会议的进行,他清楚地发现,会议的每个成员都在学习如何倾听其他人的想法。玩游戏的兴致开始减弱;人们开始更直接地说话;观点得到了更好的理解;气氛变得更加开放和信任。)”可知,由于马丁的干涉,会议上人们开始更加直接地表达自己的想法。故选C项。
5.推理判断题。根据第六段“As the meeting progressed, it was clear to him that each member of the meeting was learning how to hear the thoughts of the others. The game playing started to fall away; people started to speak more directly; views became better understood; the atmosphere became more open and trusting.(随着会议的进行,他清楚地发现,会议的每个成员都在学习如何倾听其他人的想法。玩游戏的兴致开始减弱:人们开始更直接地说话;观点得到了更好的理解;气氛变得更加开放和信任。)”和第七段“The meeting ended. As people left the room, Martin found that he could still hear what they were thinking. “That was the best meeting we’ve ever had.” “All meetings should be like that,” “ In future, I’m going to say what I think.”( 会议结束了。

根据文章第二段“Lighter in tone, comedies try to make the audience laugh and usually come to a happy ending.”(喜剧的基调比较轻松,试图让观众发笑,通常会有一个皆大欢喜的结局。)
根据文章第三段“Hardly enjoying happy endings, characters in tragedies, like Shakespeare’s Hamlet, are often troubled by tragic character flaws (缺点) that finally lead to their death.”(悲剧中的人物,比如莎士比亚的哈姆雷特,很难享受幸福的结局,他们经常被悲惨的性格缺陷所困扰,最终导致他们的死亡。)
根据文章第四段“A farce is a type of drama in which characters overact and present physical humor. Examples of farce include the play Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett and the hit 1980 movie Airplane! written by David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams.”(闹剧是一种戏剧类型,其中人物夸张表演并表现出肢体幽默。
根据第五段“Since characters express their feelings through singing rather than dialogue, performers must be both skilled actors and singers. The tragedy La boheme by Giacomo Puccini, and the comedy Falstaff by Giuseppe Verdi are classic examples of opera.”(由于角色通过唱歌而不是对话来表达感情,表演者必须是熟练的演员和歌手。
根据文章最后一段“Docudramas talk about historic events or non-fictional situations.”(纪实剧讲述历史事件或非虚构场景。)

由文章第一段“Utah is the second most wasteful states in the US. Everyone always complains about how much construction there is all the time— on campus you can’t walk ten steps without running into another pit— but no one seems to be doing anything about it. Every year the city has a surplus of money and they spent it on unneeded road construction. Instead, this money should be spent on developing Utah’s solar energy capabilities.(犹他州是美国第二个最浪费的州。每个人总是抱怨那里的建筑量太多——在校园里,你走十步路都会碰到另一个坑——但似乎没有人对此采取任何措施。每年,这个城市都有多余的钱,他们把钱花在了不必要的道路建设上。相反,这笔钱应该用于开发犹他州的太阳能能力)”可知,作者认为犹他州把钱浪费在不必要的建筑上面,认为钱应该更好用在其它方面。故选B项。
12.推理判断题。由文章第二段“However, Utah is one of the six states in the country getting more than enough sunlight to run completely on solar power every year according to Solar Nation. For reference, one might look at places similar to the Hotel at Oberlin in Ohio, a hotel remodeled in the summer of 2016 to run completely on solar power. (然而,据solar Nation报道,犹他州是全美六个阳光充足的州之一,每年完全依靠太阳能发电。作为参考,我们可以看看与俄亥俄州奥伯林酒店(Hotel at Oberlin)相似的地方,这家酒店于2016年夏天进行了改造,完全使用太阳能)”可知,作者举例 Hotel at Oberlin 是为了证明犹他州全年都可以依靠太阳能。故选C项。
13.推理判断题。由文章最后一段“Moreover, we, the humans of planet Earth, would never run out of solar energy. The sun will exist long after humanity goes. And while solar panels may be expensive, they cost the Earth much less than using coal and natural gas.(此外,我们地球上的人类永远不会耗尽太阳能。人类走后,太阳会存在很久。虽然太阳能电池板可能很昂贵,但它们比使用煤炭和天然气要便宜得多)”可知,相对于煤矿和天然气燃烧导致污染,太阳能更环保,让地球做出的代价更少。故选A项。
由文章第一段“Instead, this money should be spent on developing Utah’s solar energy capabilities (相反,这笔钱应该用于开发犹他州的太阳能)”以及最后一段“ But when we have the physical capability of making changes that will ultimately save the environment and deepen our pocketbooks (财力、钱袋子), and we don’t make those changes, we’re actually lazy rather than being cautious.(但是,当我们有能力做出改变,最终拯救环境并让我们的钱包里钱多,而我们没有做出这些改变时,我们实际上是懒惰而不是谨慎)”可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是呼吁犹他州官员开发太阳能。故选D项。
分析文章结构可知,文章第一段作者提出自己观点this money should be spent on developing Utah’s solar energy capabilities.(相反,这笔钱应该用于开发犹他州的太阳能);中间三段分别 以However,But和Moreover进一步论述自己的观点;最后一段总结升华作者观点But when we have the physical capability of making changes that will ultimately save the environment and deepen our pocketbooks , and we don’t make those changes, we’re actually lazy rather than being cautious.(但是,当我们有能力做出改变,最终拯救环境并让我们的钱包里钱多,而我们没有做出这些改变时,我们实际上是懒惰而不是谨慎)。

根据The Power of Now部分中的“The key message of the book is simple and powerful: The way to true happiness is through learning to live in the now, without reliving the past or racing to the future. (这本书的关键信息简单而有力:通往真正幸福的道路是学会活在当下,而不是重温过去或奔向未来。)”可知,讲述实现真正幸福之路的书籍是The Power of Now。故选C项。
根据首段“I do think that a book can inspire ideas and ways of thinking that have the power to transform our lives. Here are some books to serve the purpose.

由文章第二段“She asked how I was. ‘’How are you’ is a question that can turn meaningless or meaningful, depending on how you answer it. I considered going the meaningless route. Then I remembered that she is a friend from church. We once celebrated an activity together. Maybe I could lean on her for some comfort.(她问我怎么样。‘你好吗’是一个可能变得毫无意义或有意义的问题,这取决于你如何回答它。我考虑选走无意义的路线。)”可知,作者刚开始是没有想向Mary倾诉来寻求安慰的。故选D项。
22.细节理解题。由文章第三段“‘Were you two close?’ It’s the main standard that determines the appropriate size someone’s sadness can take. (‘’你们俩关系亲密吗?’这是决定一个人悲伤程度的主要标准。)”可知,Mary问这问题来判断作者有多伤心。故选A项。
由文章第四段“She nodded back, playing her role in the cultural script (剧本)we all know. Mary gathered information about the funeral arrangements, and then we parted. Seeing her was a catalyst (催化剂) to my quickly getting in touch with my sorrow. I cried loudly on the street directly.(她点了点头,扮演了我们在剧本中都知道的(客套关心别人的)角色。玛丽收集了有关葬礼安排的信息,然后我们分手了。看到她是我很快与悲伤取得联系的催化剂。我直接在街上放声大哭。)”可知,作者没有在Mary那里获得安慰。故选C项。
24.词句猜测题。由文章第五段“I felt that a heavy burden was removed. But I cried again because of the spiritual synchronization.(我觉得一个沉重的负担减轻了。但我又哭了,因为精神上找到和我共鸣的人了。)”可知,作者找到能真正能体会她感受的人,所以应是很高兴的。所以猜测made me exhilarated表“让我高兴”。故选A项。
由文章最后一段“Then I realized that courtesy (客套话) is generally good practice, but it can’t compare to personalized, thoughtful communication. And that kind of pat statement really has no place if you want to make a real connection.(然后我意识到客套话通常是很好的做法,但它不能与个性化、周到的沟通相比。如果你想建立一个真正的联系,那么客套话真的没有任何意义。)”可知,作者想表达精神上的沟通胜过客套话。故选B项。

27.推理判断题。根据第三段中的““It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.(“这有点像让牙医每天观察你的刷牙情况,”法国发明家Thomas Serval说。)”
根据第四段中的“The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush.(牙刷还可以与手机上的其他应用程序通信,因此开发人员可以创建由牙刷控制的游戏。)”
根据第五段的主题句“Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father.( Serval说,他的灵感来自他作为父亲的经历。)”
根据第五段中的“He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry.(他下班回家,问孩子们有没有刷牙。他们说“是的”,但塞尔瓦尔会发现他们的牙刷头干了。)”可知,作者问孩子们是否刷牙了,孩子们在没刷牙的情况下说自己刷过了,由此可推断,Serval的孩子不喜欢刷牙。故选A项。

根据第一段“On Wednesday, two things happened. In Syria, 80 people were killed by government airstrikes. Meanwhile, in Florida, Elon Musk’s SpaceX successfully launched and fired a sports car into space. Guess which story has dominated mainstream news sites? (周三,发生了两件事。在叙利亚,政府的空袭造成80人死亡。与此同时,在佛罗里达州,埃隆·马斯克(Elon Musk)的SpaceX成功地将一辆跑车发射到太空。猜猜哪个故事占据了主流新闻网站?)”和第二段“The launch of Musk’s Falcon Heavy rocket, the most powerful ever launched by a private company, went off successfully. Musk sent his cherry-red Tesla roadster running toward Mars, launching “a new space age”. The event attracted phenomenal publicity and made the rocket launch a masterstroke of advertising for Tesla.( 马斯克的猎鹰重型火箭(Falcon Heavy)发射成功,这是私人公司发射的最强大的火箭。马斯克向火星发送了他的樱桃红色特斯拉跑车,开启了“新的太空时代”。该活动吸引了大量的宣传,并使火箭发射成为特斯拉广告的一大亮点。)”以及第三段的“ a UN human rights coordinator for Syria said despondently(沮丧地) that he was no longer sure why he bothers to videotape the effects of bombing, since nobody ever pays attention. (联合国叙利亚人权协调员沮丧地说,他不确定为什么要费心拍摄轰炸的影响,因为从来没有人关注。)”可知,第二条新闻吸引了惊人的注意力,第一条新闻却几乎无人关注。因此可以推断,作者提到这两条新闻是为了说明说明财富分配的不平等以及由此引起的注意力分配的不平等。故选A。
根据第三段“a UN human rights coordinator for Syria said despondently(沮丧地) that he was no longer sure why he bothers to videotape the effects of bombing, since nobody ever pays attention. (联合国叙利亚人权协调员沮丧地说,他不确定为什么要费心拍摄轰炸的影响,因为从来没有人关注。)”可知,叙利亚的联合国人权协调员感到很沮丧,是因为他觉得不管他怎么努力,似乎没有人关心叙利亚的局势。故选C。
36.推理判断题。根据第六段“If we examine the situation honestly, it becomes hard to defend a project like this.(如果我们诚实地审视形势,就很难为这样的项目辩护。)”和第七段“A mission to Mars does indeed sound exciting, but it’s important to have our priorities straight.
根据文章第七段“First, perhaps we could make it so that a child no longer dies of malaria every two minutes. Or we could try to address the level of poverty in Alabama which has become so extreme that the UN investigator did not believe it could occur in a first-world country. Perhaps when violence, poverty and disease are solved, then we can head for the stars. (首先,也许我们可以做到每两分钟一个孩子不再死于疟疾。或者,我们可以尝试解决阿拉巴马州的贫困水平,该州的贫困程度已变得如此极端,以至于联合国调查人员不相信这可能发生在第一世界国家。也许当暴力、贫困和疾病得到解决时,我们就能走向星空。)”,第九段“If wealth were actually distributed fairly in this country, nobody would be in a position to fund his own private space program. (如果财富在这个国家得到公平分配,就没有人有资格为自己的私人太空计划提供资金了。)”和最后一段“But some of them are an indefensible waste of resources. (但是其中一些是毫无道理的资源浪费。)”可知,作者认为社会上财富分配不公,一方面资源和财富被浪费,另一方面还存在贫困、疾病、暴力等社会问题。因此推断作者想要告诉我们的是:用于太空项目的资金和资源是浪费,这些资源本可以首先用来解决社会上的贫困、疾病、暴力等社会问题。故选C。

It provides a proper space environment for many experiments that we have wanted to do for a long time.”(国际空间站是我们太空探索的重要一步。 故选A项。
根据第二段最后一句“In a word, if we want to explore space more, the first thing we should do is to set up a space station.”(总之,如果我们想更多的探索太空,首要的事情就是建立空间站。)
根据第三段第一句“As the space station costs a lot of money, it is hard for one country alone to establish one. ”(建立空间站耗费巨大,所以任何一个单独的国家都很难完成。)及最后一句“It is really a job that needs everyone’s effort and will benefit everyone.”(这真的需要每个人的努力,也将会使所有人获益。)
根据第三段第二句“The USA seems to be the only country that has the ability to build a space station alone, and it has tried to do so, but not very successful. ”(美国似乎是唯一有能力独立建立空间站的国家,它也尝试这样做了,但并不理想。)可知,美国独立建立空间站的尝试并不特别成功,所以它决定联合其他国家。故“aggregated”是“联合”的意思。故选A项。
根据文章第二段第一句“The international space station is an important step we should take in space exploration.”(国际空间站是我们太空探索的重要一步。) 第三段第一句“As the space station costs a lot of money, it is hard for one country alone to establish one. ”(建立空间站耗费巨大,所以任何一个单独的国家都很难完成。)说明了建立空间站遇到的困难。第三段第三句“So it aggregated many other countries to work on it together.”(所以它决定联合其他国家一起合作。)

They planned a two-year stay, but became permanent residents.(猫眼石吸引了塞巴斯蒂安和汉娜·德森伯格来到Lightning Ridge。他们计划住两年,但最终成为永久居民)”,第六段的“They love the peaceful lifestyle.(他们喜欢平静的生活方式)”,第七段的“Once you start opal mining you don’t want to do anything else… There is always the potential for finding a million dollars. 故选A。
根据倒数第三段的“They haven’t had much luck over the past couple of years, but their passion for opals conquers disappointment. 【导语】本文是议论文。作者通过举例阐述了要控制坏脾气,培养好脾气,做一个自律的能够控制自己的脾气的人。
63.细节理解题。根据第一段的“No one has a temper naturally so good that it does not need attention and cultivation, and no one has a temper so bad, that, even by proper culture, it may not become pleasant.(没有人的脾气天生好到不需要注意和培养,也没有人的脾气坏到即使经过适当的培养也不会变得令人愉快的地步。)”
根据第二段“One of the best disciplined tempers ever seen was that of a gentleman, Roger Sherman, who rose from a humble occupation to a seat in the first Congress of the United States. He made himself master of his temper and cultivated it as a great business in life. ( 我们所见过的最自律的人之一是一位绅士,罗杰·谢尔曼,他从一个卑微的职业成长为美国第一届国会的议员。他让自己控制了自己的脾气,并把它作为人生的一件大事来培养。)”以及下文的举例可知,罗杰·谢尔曼是一个自律的绅士,控制的了自己的脾气,并且努力培养自己的好脾气,因此可知他是一个能够意识到自己的行为后果的人。故选C。
65.词句猜测题。根据上文“At length, she reached the chair of Mr. Sherman, and in a moment, most unexpectedly to him, she gave him a blow on the ear with all the force she could gather.( 最后,她走到谢尔曼先生的椅子旁,不一会儿,出乎他的意料,她用尽全身力气给了他一记耳光。)”可知,老母亲当众有力给了谢尔曼先生一个耳光,结合常识和下文“But it was only for a moment and all was calm and mild as usual.(但这只是一瞬间,一切就又如同往常一样镇静而温和。)”
根据第二段的“There are one or two instances which show this part of his character.(有一两个例子可以说明他性格的这一部分。)”,第三段的“One day, after having received his highest honors, he was sitting and reading in his sitting room.(有一天,在获得最高荣誉后,他坐在客厅里看书。)”以及第四段的“I cannot help providing another instance of the power he had acquired over himself and always bearing the results of the behavior in mind.( 我不禁再举出一个例子,说明他获得了控制自己的权力,而且总是把这种行为的后果记在心里。)”
根据第一段的“No one has a temper naturally so good that it does not need attention and cultivation, and no one has a temper so bad, that, even by proper culture, it may not become pleasant. There are comers at every turn in life, against which we may run, and at which we may break out in impatience, if we choose.( 没有人的脾气天生好到不需要注意和培养,也没有人的脾气坏到即使经过适当的培养也不会变得令人愉快的地步。如果我们愿意,在生活的每个转折点上,我们都可能与之抗衡,也可能因不耐烦而爆发。)”以及第二段“One of the best disciplined tempers ever seen was that of a gentleman, Roger Sherman(罗杰·谢尔曼是我见过的脾气最自律的人之一)”和下文的举例可知,文章通过举例阐述了要控制脾气,做一个自律的能够控制自己的脾气的人。

根据第二段“People with low self-esteem do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their life. They are leaves tossed by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.(自卑的人不相信他们对自己的生活有任何力量或责任。它们是随风飘动的树叶,随天气的突然变化而随风飘动)”可知,把低自尊的人比作树叶是因为他们不相信自己有能力和责任控制自己的人生,就像树叶一样随着机会的改变而随风摇摆。故选B项。
69.推理判断题。根据第三段“Losers think that everything happens by accident while successful people realize that they are responsible.(失败者认为一切都是偶然发生的,而成功人士意识到他们是有责任的)”可知,失败者认为每件事的发生都是偶然和随机的,因此他们把失败归结于运气不好。故选D项。
根据第四段“Everything happens as a result of something.  If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect.  We are responsible for what we consciously choose to accept and believe.  Thoughts and beliefs cause everything.(任何事情的发生都是某件事的结果。如果我们能找出原因,我们就能控制结果。我们要对自己有意识地选择接受和相信的东西负责。思想和信念导致一切)”可知,成功绝非偶然,而是取决于我们对待事物的态度。故选B项。
71.推理判断题。根据最后一段“In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible.  Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.(简而言之,在你生活的各个方面,无论是金钱、身体、情感还是精神,你都要负责任。一旦你认识到这一点,接受它,并坚定地相信它,你就走上了成功之路)”可知,是作者对论点的总结,说明我们要取得成功,就要对生活的各个方面负责。也可从关键词“In short”看出,这一段的作用是总结观点。故选A项。
通过第一段“Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.(相反,要意识到成功的种子在你出生时就已经种在你体内了。只有你有能力让这些种子生长)”可以看出,作者认为我们有能力去把握成功。以及最后一句“Success is a choice and not a chance.  You can be a success if only you make the right choice.(成功是一种选择,而不是一个机会。只要你做出正确的选择,你就能成功)”表明作者的观点:成功是一种选择而不是机会,只要做出正确的选择,就可以成功。而下文都是围绕要想成功就要把握机会做出正确的选择而展开。文章结尾也是对这一中心论点的总结。因此标题也要按照“成功是一种选择”这一论点来定。故选A项。

根据第二段中“A survey of the food delivery service online conducted in the US shows that 26% of the people surveyed use food delivery service once a week, while 24% order food 2—3 times per week.   Some have meals delivered even more often, with 8% ordering 6 times per week.(一项针对美国在线外卖服务的调查显示,26%的受访者每周使用一次外卖服务,而24%的人每周订购2-3次。有些人甚至更频繁地叫餐,8%的人每周点6次餐)”可知,在美国进行的调查告诉了我们外卖APP的使用频次。故选A项。
根据第三段中“I can order precisely what I feel like eating.   And I can have that hot meal delivered to my door within about 30 minutes with only a small fee.   It’s the kind of on-demand service that used to be reserved for the ultra-wealthy.   Now ordinary people, like me, lying on their couches, working late in their living rooms, or isolating themselves at home during the pandemic can enjoy it, too.(我可以点我想吃的东西。而且我只需付很少的费用,就可以在大约30分钟内叫人把热饭送到我家门口。这种按需服务曾经是超级富豪的专利。现在,像我这样的普通人,在大流行期间躺在沙发上,在客厅里工作到很晚,或把自己隔离在家里,也可以享受它)”可知,Uber Eats可以满足不同用户的需求。故选B项。
75.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“However, I was shocked when I knew that five delivery riders were killed in three months last spring.   Some riders sometimes were paid at rates lower than the minimum wage or without much of the basic protection enjoyed by the rest of us.   They were also doing their jobs in an unsafe working environment — our city streets.(然而,去年春天,当我知道3个月内有5名快递员死亡时,我感到震惊。有些骑手的工资有时比最低工资还低,或者没有我们其他人所享有的基本保障。他们也在一个不安全的工作环境中工作——我们的城市街道)”以及最后一段中“So I deleted the app and haven’t used it, or any of its competitors, since then.(所以我删除了这款应用,从那以后再也没用过它,也没用过它的任何竞争对手)”可知,作者删除Uber Eats的主要原因是送货员的安全问题。故选C项。
根据最后一段中“I have no illusions that my standpoint will make a big difference.   But I think our governments need to fight against the companies reshaping our lives and our communities for the worse to make our cities safer for everyone, including cyclists.(我不幻想我的立场会产生重大影响。但我认为,我们的政府需要与那些让我们的生活和社区变得更糟的公司作斗争,让我们的城市对每个人都更安全,包括骑自行车的人)”可知,作者写最后一段的目的是呼吁政府做出一些改变。故选D项。
77.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Just like other young people, when I’m hungry and busy, I will order food through a food delivery app, especially during the pandemic.   These apps are fast and convenient.(就像其他年轻人一样,当我又饿又忙的时候,我会通过外卖app订餐,尤其是在疫情期间。这些应用程序又快又方便)”可知,作者本来和其他年轻人一样,也喜欢用外卖APP,再根据第三段“However, I deleted Uber Eats from my phone two months ago.(然而,两个月前,我从手机上删除了优步外卖)”以及最后一段“So I deleted the app and haven’t used it, or any of its competitors, since then.(所以我删除了这款应用,从那以后再也没用过它,也没用过它的任何竞争对手)”可知,本文之后是在讲作者为什么删除外卖APP,所以A项“Why I gave up using food delivery apps(为什么我放弃了用外卖软件)”是本文最好的标题。故选A项。

根据第二段第二句“As we made our way across the street, he told me he had been shot and had seven surgeries in the past couple of years.(我们穿过街道时,他告诉我,他中了枪,在过去几年里做了七次手术。)”
根据第二段第三句“He called getting better a “vacation” because in that kind of situation, that was the only way he could deal with what had happened.(他把好转称为“假期”,因为在那种情况下,这是他处理所发生的事情的唯一方法。)”
,第一段最后一句“He shared, “I have two little kids at home. I am thankful for any work that I can get. ”(他分享说:“我家里有两个孩子。我对我能得到的任何工作都心存感激。”)”,第三段第一句“At the end of the crosswalk, before we left each other, he said, “Through life's terrible moments, you find life's greatest gifts.”(在人行横道的尽头,在我们离开彼此之前,他说,“通过生活中可怕的时刻,你会发现生活中最好的礼物。”)”和第三段最后一句“We exchanged nods and smiles, the same exchange we first made when we stood by the crosswalk moments ago.(我们交换了点头和微笑,就像我们刚刚站在人行横道旁时一样。)”
通读全文,尤其是最后一段“You never know who may inspire you next. It may be the person standing next to you at the crosswalk or the student sitting next to you in class. Simple life stories and beautiful exchanges come with just a nod, a smile, and a crosswalk. You never know what you can learn from them, from courage to positive attitudes towards life.(你永远不知道谁会激励你。它可能是站在你旁边的人,或者是在课堂上坐在你旁边的学生。简单的生活故事和美丽的交流只是一个点头,一个微笑,一个人行横道。你永远不知道你能从他们身上学到什么,从勇气到对生活的积极态度。)”可知,从这篇文章中,我们可以知道激励人的人和事可以随时随地发生,你永远不知道谁会激励你,从他们身上能学到什么。故选D项。

84.推理判断题。根据第三段“Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, Allamby was raised by his stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home goods door-to-door. His school didn’t offer the advanced science classes that might have led him on a premed path. Even if it had, doing well in school could prove dangerous. “You could get into a lot of trouble just for being the class nerd,” Allamby said. So he set aside the thoughts of becoming a doctor and started fixing cars instead.(Allamby出生在俄亥俄州的东克利夫兰,他的母亲是全职主妇,父亲是挨家挨户推销家居用品的。他的学校没有提供可能让他走上医学预科之路的高级科学课程。即便如此,在学校表现良好也可能是危险的。“如果你只是班里的书呆子,你可能会惹上很多麻烦,”Allamby说。所以他把当医生的念头搁在一边,开始修车)”可推知,作者写第3段的目的是来解释为什么Allamby曾经放弃了他的梦想。故选C项。
85.细节理解题。根据第四段中“But Allamby’s chemistry professor told him ”Why not a doctor? You have a great talent for the work. You will go a long way.”
根据最后一段““How many people can do something so brand-new at such a late stage in their life?” he said. “My age and past career are all good reasons why I shouldn’t be here. 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要告诉读者食品包装上的日期并不受食品和药物管理局的监管,而是来自食品生产商。作者建议取消针对消费者的日期。
87.细节理解题。根据第二段“People think of them as expiration dates, or the date at which a food should go in the trash bin. But the dates have little to do with when food becomes less safe to eat. I am a microbiologist and I have studied the spread of bacteria (细菌) in food. A more science-based food dating system could make it easier for people to differentiate foods they can safely eat from those that could be hazardous. (人们认为它们是保质期,或者食物应该扔进垃圾桶的日期。但日期与食物何时变得不安全无关。我是一名微生物学家,我研究了细菌在食物中的传播。一个更科学的食品测年系统可以让人们更容易区分他们可以安全食用的食物和那些可能有害的食物。)”可知,作者认为需要一个更科学的食品测年系统,也就是说目前的食品测年系统并不科学。故选A。
根据划线单词上一句“It’s reported that in 2020 the average American household spent 12 percent of its income on food, but a lot of the food is simply thrown away, despite being perfectly safe to eat. And nearly 31 percent of all available food is never consumed.(据报道,2020年,美国家庭平均将收入的12%花在食物上,但很多食物被扔掉了,尽管它们吃起来非常安全。在所有可用的食物中,有近31%从未被食用。)”可知,这里指的问题是指食物浪费的问题。故选C。
89.推理判断题。根据第四段最后“The dates on those food packages, however, are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Rather came from food producers. (然而,这些食品包装上的日期不受食品和药物管理局的监管。而是来自食品生产商。)”以及第五段“food brand may survey consumers in a focus group to pick a ”use by“ date that is six months after the product was produced because 60 percent of the focus group no longer liked the taste after six months.  (一个食品品牌可能会在一个焦点群体中调查消费者,以选择产品生产后6个月的“使用日期”,因为焦点群体中60%的人在6个月后不再喜欢这种味道。)”和第六段“One industry group, the Food Marketing Institute and Grocery Manufacturers Association, suggests that its members mark food ”best if used by“ to indicate how long the food is safe to eat, and ”use by“ to indicate when food becomes unsafe.(一个行业组织,食品营销协会和食品杂货制造商协会,建议其成员在食品上标注“最佳使用时间”,以表明食品的安全食用时间,并在“使用时间”上标注食品的不安全时间。)” 故选A。
根据文章第四段“It’s logical to believe that date labels are there for safety reasons, since the USA government enforces rules including printing nutrition and ingredient information on food packaging. The dates on those food packages, however, are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Rather came from food producers. (日期标签的存在是出于安全考虑,这是合乎逻辑的,因为美国政府执行的规定包括在食品包装上印刷营养和成分信息。然而,这些食品包装上的日期不受食品和药物管理局的监管。而是来自食品生产商。)”以及第五段“A food brand may survey consumers in a focus group to pick a ”use by“ date that is six months after the product was produced because 60 percent of the focus group no longer liked the taste after six months.  (一个食品品牌可能会在一个焦点群体中调查消费者,以选择产品生产后6个月的“使用日期”,因为焦点群体中60%的人在6个月后不再喜欢这种味道。)”可知,文章主要介绍了当前食品日期标签的阴暗面。故选D。
