Researchers at the Harvard Medical School have been looking at how sleeping and dreaming affect the way we perform certain tasks. Previous research has already shown that a person who has a nap (小睡) after learning a task will be able to complete the task better when they wake up than a person who doesn’t sleep. Now it has been revealed that if the person dreams about the task while they are asleep then they will be able to perform it even better.
For instance, if a student stays up all night to revise for an exam then he or she won’t do as well as a student who combines their study with sleep. But the student who will do best in the exam is the one who sleeps and dreams providing the dreams are related to what he or she is learning.
The time we are asleep is divided into different periods. These periods are known as REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep. During REM periods our dreams are more vivid and intense and easier to remember when we wake up. Brain activity is also higher.
According to Associate Professor Robert Stickgold, a memory and dream researcher at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, there’s convincing evidence that when we dream, the brain is making connections that help us learn what we have been learning previously.
It’s possible that in the future some courses will include short sleeping periods as part of the learning process. The power nap is now an established practice in the professional world even if it’s frowned upon in some cultures. It’s only a matter of time before a short sleep is common while studying. And if our dreams can be controlled to relate in some way to what we are learning then our learning potential will increase even more.
We know that we can’t live without sleep. But the reasons why we sleep and why we dream while we’re asleep are still a mystery.

It may be the holiday season, but the spirit of peace and goodwill has not infected the streets of Los Angeles. More drivers seem to be rolling through stop signs and running red lights than ever before. Everyone seems to be in a terrible hurry.
Why is everyone in such a hurry? Where are they rushing to?
I think perhaps the answer lies in answering this question: What does that round of parties and meetings and mad rushing from place to place allow all of us to avoid confronting? I think the answer is clear---ourselves.
There is an experiment where subjects had to choose between being alone with themselves and their thoughts for approximately 15 minutes and receiving electric shocks. The majority chose the shocks-- reflection of how painful, frightening, threatening, confusing, boring (!), you name it...we find being alone with just ourselves and our thoughts.
Our desire not to be with our innermost thoughts is so great that we create and find distractions. In the car, we can make phone calls or listen to music. We live in a world of endless opportunities for distraction.
I understand the desire. Life is hard. Growing is a painful slow process. To keep moving requires determination and strength--- and giving up seems So much easier (as do those electric shocks!). We may win some battles, but the war is never over. Sometimes we are just too tired to fight and just need that music or that book to relax. I just instinctively turn on the radio when I get in the car, I don’t even give the quiet a moment to sink in.
But it’s time for a reality check; otherwise, we slip into an avoidance mode. It’s challenging. But let’ s take a change. Instead of rushing from house to car to meeting to groceries to...let’s take a moment to stop and think before each activity. What do I want to achieve now? And what is the best way to do that? Maybe I could think of ways to grow.

D.He thinks life is full of surprises.
When we are born, we are perfect. As we grow, we develop many complexities due to many influences in our lives. Our brain collects and saves all kinds of information from the moment we are born. Apart from our brain having memory, cells in our body have their own memory, meaning that our body stores memories, both physiological and psychological. We are complex emotional beings in nature compared with any other living things.
Apparently, physical and psychological memories strongly influence our emotions! Interestingly, we can create, store, and release emotions like energy. Moreover, if we do not process our negative emotions properly and suppress (压制) them for a long time, they can find a way out violently and unexpectedly. Unfortunately, we carry our guilt throughout our lives putting the ever-increasing burden on our shoulders.
Both guilt and anger are useless for us. Therefore, one may ask: is there a way to put down the burden from our shoulders? It is possible, indeed. Importantly, since our guilt and anger inside us are neither released nor given attention, they are stored. Actually, we should take action to address our negative emotions in order to remove them from our system. We cannot just wish them away.
In fact, by acknowledging their presence and providing a channel for them, we can dissolve our emotions gradually. Is there a better way to unload our burden? Luckily, we have a natural gift for processing our feelings and emotions-forgiveness.
Indeed, forgiving ourselves is a great way to dissolve negative emotions. Of course, we should also learn to readily forgive others, and when we learn to forgive ourselves, we also naturally forgive others.
In summary, it is no good carrying our years of emotional baggage. By forgiving, we can throw away the emotional baggage we carry for years. Forgive your past mistakes. The moment you start forgiving, you will feel relieved and years of heaviness will lift magically!

Here’s a depressing number for you: 12. Just 12 percent of engineers in the United States are women. In computing it’s a bit better, where women make up 26 percent of the workforce — but that number has actually fallen from 35 percent in 1990.
There’s no single solution to such an annoying problem, but here’s an unlikely one: robots getting more girls interested in STEM. Specifically, robot toys for kids — simple yet powerful toys for teaching youngsters how to engineer.
These days, many toys targeting at getting kids interested in science and engineering are gender specific. “Sometimes there’s this idea that girls need special Legos, or it needs to be pink and purple for girls to get into it, and sometimes that makes me annoyed,” says Amanda Sullivan, who works inhuman development at Tufts University.
So Sullivan decided to try a specifically non-gendered robot toy called Kibo. Before playing with Kibo, boys were significantly more likely to say they’d enjoy being an engineer than the girls did. But after, boys had about the same opinion, while girls were now equally as likely to express an engineering interest as the boys. “I think that robots in general are novel to young children both boys and girls,” Sullivan says. “So aside from engaging girls specifically, I think robot toys like Kibo bring an air of excitement and something new to the classroom that gets all kids excited about learning.”
There’s a problem, though. While Sullivan proves that these kinds of robot toys can get girls interested in engineering, that doesn’t mean it will sell. “If you look at sales data, it clearly shows that they’re not being used by girls,” says Sharmi Albrechtsen, CEO and co—founder of SmartGurlz. “Even the ones that are considered no gender difference are towards boys. That’s the reality of the situation.” Gender sells — at least when it’s the parents doing the buying.
16.What can be learned about American women from paragraph l?
A.They are less gifted than men.
B.They can be the best engineers.
C.They are better in computing than in engineering.
D.They take up a smaller part in computing than in the past.
17.Which opinion might Amanda Sullivan agree with?
A.Robot toys are more suitable for boys.
B.Girls should play with pink and purple robot toys.
C.Both boys and girls can be attracted by robot toys.
D.People must consider gender when designing toys.
18.Which of the following best describes Kibo?
A.Money-saving. B.Gender-free. C.Eye-catching. D.Girl-focused.
19.Why don’t the robot toys sell well among girls?
A.They are boring and dull. B.They are difficult for girls.
C.They ignore the needs of girls. D.They are not welcomed by girls’ parents.
We’ve all been there. It has been a long day, there is nothing in the fridge, cooking seems arduous and the solution is obvious: takeaway. It’s easy for takeaways to become a regular habit. At some point, you have to wonder: even if you don’t look different in the mirror, is it doing you any harm?
There is some evidence that too many takeaways is linked to weight gain, but the relationship isn’t clear. A 2022 study found a connection between eating takeaway-style food in the 24 hours before taking the survey and increased BMI in participants, although the researchers were careful to point out that they didn’t know whether frequently eating takeaways made people overweight, or whether overweight people frequently eat takeaways. There is, however, evidence that simply living near(or walking past)a takeaway outlet or two can have an impact on body weight, with exposure to outlets near the workplace, most likely to tempt people.
But why? Well, takeaway food tends to be high in fat and salt - ingredients that are relatively cheap and taste good, making you more likely to reorder. There is also some evidence that junk food can be addictive, as the combination of salt, fat and sugar makes it hard to stop eating.
There is also the nutritional quality of the ingredients themselves. “Most takeaways contain highly processed ingredients and additives, nutrient-poor carbohydrates and plenty of deep-fried foods cooked in oil repeatedly heated to high temperatures, says Pearson.
So, what is the message? If you must place that order, consider the options:
The worst offenders on any menu are likely to be fried foods, or anything covered in high-sugar sauces. If you order Chinese food, go for steamed dumplings, grilled fish or soup. If you are going for Indian food, go heavy on the side dishes, like bean and potato curries, which are often more flavourful and healthy.
Finally, try to cut your consumption: consider switching your daily routes, hide the menus, and delete the apps on your phone.

I was 68 when I first stepped on stage as a standup comedian in 2003. I’d never set foot in a comedy club before. I’ve always been a performer - I’ve worked as a singer, actor and musician - but all that came to an end after 9/11. I live in New York, and we watched the twin towers fall from my apartment building. For a year afterwards, nobody wanted to go out or be entertained.
It was then that I started to think about comedy. I realised people needed to laugh, to enjoy themselves again, and thought that with a little training I could do it. I took a few classes, tried to work out a routine, and finally plucked up the courage to get up on stage. That first time was terrifying. I had no idea what the audience would make of me.
In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough to break through as a woman, even harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother. As I stepped on stage that first time, people laughed nervously. They were clearly surprised to see me. I introduced myself, stated my age and tried my first joke. There was silence. But by the time I got to the third line, people were properly laughing, I was addicted.
Now my sets differ. I might be on stage for 10 minutes in front of a dozen people, or my one-woman show is a full hour in front of a crowd of 100. Even today, I’m nervous before I step out. My first line is, “Hello, everybody. I’m 88 and three-quarters years old. I’m telling you that in case I don’t make it all the way through the show.” Then people laugh and I relax.
After a show, people young and old come up to me, saying what an inspiration I am. They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased I can show that as an older person you don’t need to take a back seat in life.
I’ve no intention of stopping comedy. I’m taking all these pills, trying to stay alive, and I hope to still be performing when I’m 100. My goal is to still be up there making people laugh. It’s hard work, but it stops me being bored. I’d only be playing golf otherwise

A growing body of research suggests that the gut microbiome (消化道菌群) could play a major role in a rising chronic disease that makes us physically weaker. The illness, which is commonly called chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), is characterized by intense fatigue, gastrointestinal (胃肠道的) issues, muscle pain, and cognitive challenges such as headaches and difficulty concentrating, among other symptoms. It often follows a viral infection which can lead to a “disruption” in a balanced gut ecosystem. Actually, an increasing number of Americans have been the sufferers since the outbreak of COVID-19.
Two recent studies published in Cell Host &Microbe point to changes in the microbiome as a possible cause of CFS. Research groups at Columbia University and the Jackson Laboratory performed detailed analyses of the microbes in stool (粪便) samples from patients with CFS and compared them to healthy controls.
The two groups found similar bacteria species were less present in CFS patients compared to control patients. They focused on bacteria that produce butyrate, a fatty acid involved in regulating metabolism and the immune system. “Butyrate plays several roles in directing the body’s response to infections, while also protecting the barrier between the intestine (肠) and the circulatory system, regulating genetic changes in cells, and more,” says Brent Williams, lead author on the Columbia study. Williams and his colleagues extensively analyzed the role of butyrate in CFS patients’ guts, even identifying a correlation between low levels of bacteria that produce this acid and more severe symptoms.
Parallel findings from the Jackson Laboratory team suggest the bacteria that produce butyrate could be used to diagnose CFS. Previous research has identified microbiome issues in CFS patients, but the new findings help clarify which microbes could be related to the illness.
More research on butyrate-producing bacteria and other species identified in the studies is necessary to investigate these potential biomarkers of CFS, the authors say. If the findings are replicated, specific gut bacteria could be used to diagnose the illness, which is currently identified based on symptoms alone.
The findings additionally point toward possible treatments, such as probiotics or microbiome-focused diet adjustments—though patients who have been sick for long periods may require drugs that alleviate the damage done to their metabolism or immune system.

In order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius — a suggested safe threshold (阈值,界限) — carbon neutrality by mid-21st century is essential. This target is also laid down in the Paris agreement signed by 195 countries, including the EU, which aims to reach global peaking of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible and to undertake rapid reductions.
Carbon neutrality means having a balance between emitting carbon and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere in carbon sinks. Removing carbon oxide from the atmosphere and then storing it is known as carbon sequestration (碳封存). In order to achieve net zero emissions, all worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will have to be counterbalanced (抵消) by carbon sequestration.
Carbon sink is any system that absorbs more carbon than it emits. The main natural carbon sinks are soil, forests and oceans. According to estimates, natural sinks remove between 9.5 and 11 Gt of CO2 per year. Annual global CO2 emissions reached 38.0 Gt in 2019. Moreover, no artificial carbon sinks are able to remove carbon from the atmosphere on the necessary scale to fight global warming at present. The carbon stored in natural sinks such as forests is released into the atmosphere through forest fires, changes in land use or logging. This is why it is essential to reduce carbon emissions in order to reach climate neutrality.
Another way to reduce emissions and to pursue carbon neutrality is to offset (补偿) emissions made in one sector by reducing them somewhere else. This can be done through investment in renewable energy, energy efficiency or other clean, low-carbon technologies.
The European Union is committed to achieving the carbon neutrality by 2050. Under the Green Deal it aims to become the first continent that removes as many CO2 emissions as it produces by 2050. On 7 October 2020, the European Parliament backed climate neutrality by 2050 and a 60% emission reduction target by 2030 compared to 1990 levels — more than Commission’s proposal of 55%.
In addition, members called for all EU countries individually to become climate neutral and insisted that after 2050, more CO2 should be removed from atmosphere than is emitted. Also, all direct or indirect subsidies (补贴) to fossil fuels should be canceled by 2025 at the latest.
35.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic. B.To present a fact.
C.To explain an agreement. D.To define a concept.
36.What would happen if carbon neutrality is achieved?
A.There will be no carbon emission.
B.The carbon emission will reach its peak.
C.The temperature will rise within 1.5 degrees Celsius.
D.The amount of production of CO2 will equal its removal.
37.Why are carbon sinks alone unable to achieve carbon neutrality?
A.Because they release more CO2 than they take in.
B.Because man-made ones couldn’t replace natural ones.
C.Because there aren’t enough of them.
D.Because people are destroying them.
38.What is the EU’s attitude towards its carbon goal?
A.Pessimistic. B.Indifferent.
C.Unclear. D.Ambitious.
Heading to Rome, but not in the city for too long? We’re going to focus on Rome’s highlights in this guide to help you get the most out of your day in Rome.
Colosseum
Dating from ancient Rome, it has survived through the fall of the Roman Empire, the Dark ages, the Middle Ages, the Industrial Revolution, and our current modern age, but it’s still incredibly recognisable as a giant sporting arena(圆形运动场), and looks pretty good for a 2,000-year-old building! The Colosseum is open every day, with times varying depending on the time of year.
Roman Forum
Close to the Colosseum, and included with your Colosseum ticket, is the Roman Forum. This was the heart of the Roman Empire with temples, shrines, government buildings, speech platforms, judiciary buildings, and places of commerce. There’s a great deal to see here, although we’d suggest trying to limit your time to around an hour to 90 minutes so as to allow you more time for your rest day in Rome.
Vatican Museum
The Vatican Museums are vast. There are over seven kilometres of corridors spanning 54 galleries, and with 20,000 works of art on display, there’s no shortage of content to keep you busy. Enough to say, an afternoon, or even a day, is unlikely going to be enough to fully appreciate what is on display. Note, the Vatican is closed on Sundays and some other days. Book your tickets in advance of your visit.
Sistine Chapel
Within the Vatican Museum complex is the Sistine Chapel (entry is included with Vatican Museum entry), whose ceiling and Last Judgement painting are generally regarded as one of Michaelangelo’s greatest works, and one of the greatest Renaissance works. As a sidenote, there’s no photography allowed in here, and there are guards who will enforce this rule. Lots of people break it, but we have seen people escorted(护送) out for doing so.
39.Where can you have a glimpse of the old Roman daily life?
A.Colossem B.Roman Forum
C.Vatican Museum. D.Sistine Chapel.
40.In which way can you get into the Sistine Chapel?

I have been a pet behaviorist for more than 25 years, helping animals “perform” on camera. But when a TV company asked if I could teach a dog to fly a plane, I faced the toughest challenge of my career.
Initially, I was hesitant about the project, which involved taking rescue dogs through training to control a light aircraft. I wondered if the idea was in the animals’ best interests but was won over by the program’s aim: to prove that an abandoned dog is capable of far more than people might expect.
My all-male crew was Alfie, Blondie and Shadow. We started with fun tasks that tested the dogs’ memories and abilities, training them to perform complicated moves. By breaking down a complex trick into simpler tasks, I was able to get my boys to achieve polished performances.
The tasks (barking on signals and pushing buttons with their paws) gave us a good feeling for which dogs might be most suited to flight school. I was delighted when Alfie and Shadow made it through, along with another trainer’s dog, Reggie.
We had six weeks to turn them into pilots. I built a copy of the plane’s seat and controls. Another system in front of the dogs included lights – red for right, blue for left and white for straight – and made distinctive sounds. We operated it from the back.
After six weeks, I was delighted at how far the dogs had come. Their final test was to perform a figure of eight, making turns while controlling their altitude. We needed a human co-pilot to take them to 3,000 feet before giving control to the dogs. All three of them performed admirably, flying the plane for minutes at a time.
In the five years since making the program, I visited London and saw Shadow, who is becoming a Hollywood star. Before the show, Shadow was only hours away from being put to sleep(安乐死). It’s a situation that tens of thousands of dogs find themselves in every year. They all have the potential to achieve amazing things if given the chance.
42.Why didn’t the author take the program at first?
A.Because he doubted whether it was good for the animals.
B.Because unwanted dogs’ ability was beyond expectation.
C.Because it was the biggest challenge.
D.Because the dogs might not be interested.
43.How did the author train the dogs to fly a plane?
A.He got help from three human assistants.
B.He trained the dogs on a real plane.
C.He used small tasks to train the dogs step by step.
D.He let the dogs operate the aircraft on their own.
44.What did the dogs do on the final test?
A.They flew the plane in the shape of the number eight.
B.They flew the plane to 3000 feet high.
C.They flew the plane only in straight lines.
D.They were helped by humans all the way.
45.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Intelligent and ambitious. B.Considerate and strategic.
C.Powerful and sympathetic. D.Realistic and cooperative.
One Saturday, Mary and 1 were playing with a ball and suddenly the ball went into a big man’s house. We went to his house and asked him if he could let us in to get our ball. He said, “No.” We felt helpless. Then I had an idea. There was a water tank (水箱) behind the man’s house. I looked at it and told Mary that we could climb onto the water tank and jump over the wall. Mary agreed, but we were both wearing skirts. So we decided to get our ball the next day.
The next morning Mary and I went to the water tank very early. We were both wearing shorts. Mary first climbed down into the man’s house by herself and I followed her. We looked for the ball and found it under a bed. Along with the ball were some gold bars! In a rush, we climbed back with the ball.
When we reached Mary’s house, the TV was on. It was news time. We couldn’t believe our ears when we heard that 20 gold bars were stolen from a gold shop. They showed a picture of the gold bars which were exactly the same as the ones we had seen under the big man’s bed. We rushed to tell Mary’s mother about the gold bars and she called the police immediately. The police came at once and caught the man. They found the gold bars in his house.
Several days later a police officer came and said, “Thank you children for helping us catch the thief. Here is the reward for you.”
We opened the gift box and were greatly surprised. There were some detective (侦探的) storybooks.

As a young man, AI was a skilled artist. He had a wife and two fine sons. One night, his oldest son developed a stomachache. Thinking it was only some common illness, neither AI nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the illness became acute and the boy died suddenly that night.
Knowing the death could have been prevented if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation,AI’s emotional health was weakened under the effect of his guilt. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than AI could handle and he became an alcoholic (酒鬼).
As the alcoholism progressed, AI began to lose everything he had — his home, his land, his art objects, everything. Eventually AI died alone in a San Francisco motel room.
When I heard of AI’s death, I thought he was a loser because he ended his life with nothing material to show for it.
As time went by, I began to change my judgment. You see, I knew AI’s now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known. I watched Ernie with his children and saw the free flow of love between them. I knew that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.
One day, Ernie told me, “From my earliest memories as a child until I left home at 18, my dad came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said,’I love you, son.’”
Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge AI as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he left love to his son,who became one of the finest, most giving men I have ever known.

On the eve of this week’s rail strikes, it was reported that the industry bosses are planning to weed out paper train tickets and close almost 1,000 station ticket offices in England. The transport secretary, Grant Shapps, has made no secret of his desire to see costs saved in this way. Some stations sell only a handful of tickets each week and the vast majority of transactions (交易) have moved online.
In the name of cost-cutting, station ticket offices are likely to follow the telephone booth on the corner and become memory. For those who have grown used to the benefits of organizing travel via smart phones, there will be little to feel sorry for. But for people without online access or skills, who tend to be older, poorer, and more fragile, another social barrier will have been built.
From medical appointments to payment apps for parking, more and more key services are now delivered digitally. As this revolution takes place, the interests of a significant minority are being ignored to some extent. In the case of health and social care, for example, it will often be those most in need of assistance who are least able to employ electronic devices.
The debate over ticket offices offers an opportunity to reflect more broadly on the increasing role of technology in our social landscape. The unavoidable trend towards technology is predictable, but its possible consequences need to be managed with more care. With the expanding range and increasing complexity of digital requirements, the aged are gradually withdrawing from increasing social services in their lives. Ros Altmann, the former pensions minister, recently wrote of being contacted by an elderly woman who no longer drives to her local park, because she cannot download the car parking app required.
Much more needs to be invested in helping gain easy online access. Alternative offline options must be maintained for important services. Contactable telephone numbers of relevant staff should always be available. These will cost more. But that is the price of digital transformation.
56.What does the underlined “weed out” mean in the first paragraph?
A.Pass on to. B.Give in to. C.Get rid of. D.Put up with.
57.Who will be kept out of service by the plan to sell tickets online?
A.The aged. B.The young. C.The rich. D.The strong.
58.What can be inferred about the digital transformation?
A.It will meet the demand of consumers. B.It will cost much less than planned.
C.It will need to be updated constantly. D.It will result in new social problems.
59.What is the text mainly about?
A.The accessibility of important offline services. B.The attitudes of the elderly towards technology.
C.The barriers caused by digital transformation. D.The pros and cons of marketing tickets online.
A team of Chinese researchers have recently developed a new type of self-powered flexible and transparent electronic skin to monitor subtle human activities, shedding light on the future of wearable electronics. This new e-skin integrates a flexible transparent supercapacitor (超级电容器) as an energy storage device with a stretchable transparent strain sensor (应变传感器). Thanks to its mechanical softness, the integrated e-skin can be directly attached to various parts on the body.
As the largest organ of human body, skin is responsible for multiple major functions such as protection, perspiration, regulation of body temperature, and sensory stimulation (刺激). It forms the basis of people’s physical interactions with the outside world.
The ideal e-skin should be highly sensitive, self-powered, and suitable for the human skin. “Inspired by sensory functions and performance of real human skin, we have made the new e-skin both flexible and transparent to serve multiple functions. After charging, it is capable of monitoring people’s subtle physical signals and multi-scaled activities in real time. It can measure a person’s pulse, tell when they are swallowing, and detect other body movements,” said Lan Wei, a professor at the School of Physical Science and Technology of Lanzhou University and the leader of the research team.
E-skin is the core of future wearable electronic devices. The new invention can be applied in smart health care, human-machine interaction, virtual reality and artificial intelligence. For example, it could help surgeons control surgical robots more precisely, enable people to “touch” over long distances, and create more immersive gaming experiences.
Going ahead, the research team will focus on strengthening the sensory capacity and power supply of the e-skin, making it even more like human skin, which will in turn make it more adaptive to various future applications.
60.Why do Chinese scientists invent the new wearable e-skin?
A.To regulate human body temperature. B.To watch and check human activities.
C.To delay human skin aging process. D.To improve human skin’s flexibility.
61.What inspired the researchers to develop the new e-skin?
A.The human contact with nature. B.The trend of wearable devices.
C.The way real human skin works. D.The development of strain sensors.
62.What will be the centre of the future research?
A.Strengthening remote control of the e-skin. B.Creating more new functions of the e-skin.
C.Changing the outer appearance of the e skin. D.Improving the sensory ability of the e-skin.
63.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Electronic Skin: More Than Skin B.Electronic Skin: More Like Skin
C.Electronic Skin: More for Fun D.Electronic Skin: More At Ease
A week ago, “Sports for Life” programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport that they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones.
Sport 1: Basketball.
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from the Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts with one teacher monitoring each game.
Sport 2: Gym.
We will be using the St. Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has a lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities — skipping, jogging, and outdoor aerobics (有氧运动) are all free of charge. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.
Sport 3: Hiking.
Hiking will take place at the Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75 per hour. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Sport 4: Swimming.
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the students from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (2:45 pm to 3:45 pm). Only students skillful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.
64.Who is the memo intended for?
A.The parents. B.The students. C.The workers. D.The teachers.
65.Why is the gym recommended in the St. Peter’s Memorial Park?
A.It provides free-for-all activities. B.It offers shelters from the sun.
C.It covers the cost of transport. D.It remains uncrowded all day.
66.What is a student required to do if taking part in swimming?
A.To pay $10 in all. B.To arrive at 4:00 pm.
C.To wear a swimming suit. D.To be good at swimming.
Whether we are sitting down or standing up, still or moving, body posture influences our mood. Several studies have shown this link between physical posture and mood. Others have shown a relationship between our mood and our cognitive (认知的) performance, including memory, reasoning, learning, and the speed of reaction and processing of information.
So a logical question arises. Can body posture influence our cognitive performance?
Previously, a New Zealand team (University of Auckland) carried out an experiment on posture when we walk, especially in the street. The team had found a very clear influence of our posture on our mood and confidence. It appears that walking with a hunched back, bowed head and motionless arms have a negative influence on our mental state.
Indeed, the researchers found that the simple act of straightening up, standing up straight, with your head held high, and gazing forward gives us a serious boost of confidence. Not only does our spontaneous posture have a psychological effect, but by correcting it, it is possible to bring about improvement in the long term.
In this other study, this time carried out by an Austrian team (Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg), researchers observed the same phenomenon, this time in a sitting position. Young adults were invited to participate in tests presented as intended to assess their ability to concentrate. In fact, the researchers had them sit in different postures — from upright to very slumped (消沉) — in order to note their influences on mood and cognition.
A first observation indicates that “sitting upright” is associated with a better overall mood. It is also found to have a positive influence on the speed of processing information and completing tasks, although the test pass rate does not vary significantly with posture.
Finally, and surprisingly enough, blood pressure is a little more favorable in an upright position. To further complete the list of benefits of sitting upright, we will add that it is widely recommended for protecting the back in case of work that requires sitting for a long time.
67.Why does the writer mention the studies at the beginning?
A.To introduce what cognitive performance is.
B.To emphasize the importance of body posture.
C.To prove the results of those studies are wrong.
D.To raise a new question to be studied and solved.
68.What does the underlined word “hunched” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Straightened. B.Bent. C.Loose. D.Solid.
69.What does the first study indicate?
A.Posture influences our mental state. B.Straightening up has a negative effect.
C.Gazing upward builds up confidence. D.Walking posture is especially important.
70.What can we learn about sitting upright?
A.It has mental and physical benefits. B.It helps improve the test pass rate.
C.It requires sitting for a long time. D.It increases the blood pressure.

A giant sunfish, about nine feet long, was caught on camera by kayakers off the coast of California. Ocean sunfish and southern sunfish are the world’s biggest bony fish, and they are both found in the Pacific Ocean. Adult ocean sunfish may reach more than 4,000 pounds, which is the same weight as an adult male rhinoceros (犀牛).
During a trip off the coast of Laguna Shore on December 2, Rich German and his friend Matthew Wheaton came across the massive sunfish just a few hundred yards from the beach. They then dialed 911. According to German, who talked to the media, this was the biggest sunfish that any of them had ever encountered.
Sunfish are a genuinely global species that can be found all over the world, but they spend their whole lives in the open ocean. Therefore, encounters like these are few and far between.
German captured images and footage of the sunfish. An underwater close-up shot of a sunfish as it wanders past the camera is included in one of the short films. “It was a one-of-a-kind and really interesting event,” German said of the most recent encounter, which he described as “another indication of why we need to conserve the ocean and the incredible creatures that call it home.”
Beyond its particular shape without the caudal fin (尾鳍), the species also surprises us with its impressive size, up to 3.10 meters long, which allows it to have few natural enemies. However, as a great lover of jellyfish (水母), its greed for food often leads it to confuse plastic bags with its favorite dish, making seawater pollution one of its main threats alongside overfishing.
Behind its impressive size, the sunfish is a harmless swimmer who today faces many threats. The sharp decline observed among its populations is due not to other sea animals of which it would be the food but to human activities which participate in destroying its habitat.
74.Why is the chance to encounter sunfish off the coast small?
A.It has impressive size. B.Its habitat has been destroyed.
C.It usually lives far from the coast. D.An adult ocean sunfish is too heavy.
75.What does German think of the encounter?
A.Encouraging and pitiful. B.Interesting and dangerous.
C.Anticipated and incredible. D.Impressive and meaningful.
76.What do we know about sunfish according to the text?
A.It’s greedy for food to support. B.It’s threatened by other sea animals.
C.It suffers from seawater pollution. D.It mistakes jellyfish for plastic bags.
77.Which could be a suitable title for the passage?
A.The Biggest Sunfish in the World Was Encountered
B.Why We Need to Conserve the Ocean as the Habitat
C.Sharp Decline Observed Among Sunfish’s Populations
D.Giant Ocean Sunfish Filmed off the Coast of California

可知,现在研究发现,睡梦梦见的任务将能执行的更好,以及倒数第二段中的“And if our dreams can be controlled to relate in some way to what we are learning then our learning potential will increase even more.
根据第一段中的“Now it has been revealed that if the person dreams about the task while they are asleep then they will be able to perform it even better. (现在研究表明,如果一个人在睡觉的时候梦到了这个任务,那么他就能做得更好。)”可知研究发现在睡梦中梦到的任务,在执行的时候会表现得更好,根据第二段“For instance, if a student stays up all night to revise for an exam then he or she won’t do as well as a student who combines their study with sleep. But the student who will do best in the exam is the one who sleeps and dreams providing the dreams are related to what he or she is learning. (例如,如果一个学生为了考试而熬夜复习,那么他或她的成绩就不会像一个学习与睡眠相结合的学生那样好。但是在考试中表现最好的学生是那些睡觉和做梦的人,因为这些梦与他或她所学的有关。)”举例说明一个学生在不同睡眠的状况下复习后考试的表现,以此来解释研究发现的结论,所以作者是通过举例的方式解释研究发现的结论的。故选B项。
3.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“These periods are known as REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep. During REM periods our dreams are more vivid and intense and easier to remember when we wake up. Brain activity is also higher. (这段时间被称为REM(快速眼动)睡眠和NREM(非快速眼动)睡眠。在快速眼动时期,我们的梦更生动、更强烈,醒来时更容易记住。大脑活动也更高。)”可知,在REM睡眠阶段,梦更形象强烈,醒来后更易记住,大脑更活跃,由此可推断,NREM睡眠阶段梦可能会从记忆中消失。故选C项。
4.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“According to Associate Professor Robert Stickgold, a memory and dream researcher at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, there’s convincing evidence that when we dream, the brain is making connections that help us learn what we have been learning previously.(根据波士顿哈佛医学院的记忆和梦境研究员罗伯特·斯蒂克戈尔德副教授的说法,有令人信服的证据表明,当我们做梦时,大脑正在建立连接,帮助我们学习之前学过的东西。)”

故选A 项。
根据倒数第三段中的“Our desire not to be with our innermost thoughts is so great that we create and find distractions. (我们不愿与内心深处的想法在一起的愿望是如此强烈,以至于我们创造和发现了干扰。)”以及倒数第二段中的“I understand the desire. Life is hard. Growing is a painful slow process. To keep moving requires determination and strength--- and giving up seems So much easier (as do those electric shocks!). (我理解这种渴望。生活是艰难的。成长是一个痛苦而缓慢的过程。继续前进需要决心和力量——放弃似乎更容易(就像那些电击一样!)”可知,作者知道人们不愿意与内心深处的自己在一起的欲望非常强烈,而倒数第二段中,作者很理解这种欲望,由此可推断,作者很理解那些选择电击的人的想法。故选C项。
8.细节理解题。根据尾段中的“But it’s time for a reality check; otherwise, we slip into an avoidance mode. It’s challenging. But let’ s take a change. Instead of rushing from house to car to meeting to groceries to...let’s take a moment to stop and think before each activity. (但现在是时候检查一下现实了;否则,我们就会进入回避模式。它是具有挑战性的。但是让我们改变一下。而不是匆忙地从家到车到会议到食品杂货到……让我们在每次活动前停下来想一想。)”可知,作者认为该认清现实了,为避免进入逃避模式,现在应该做出一些改变,在每次活动前停下来思考一些问题,由此可知,作者将花更多的时间去思考。故选C项。

20.词句猜测题。根据划线单词上文“It has been a long day, there is nothing in the fridge(这是漫长的一天,冰箱里什么都没有)”可知,冰箱里什么都没有,所以没法烹饪,即烹饪很困难,由此可推知划线单词“arduous”意为“困难的”,与B项“Troublesome(困难的)”意思一样,故选B。
根据第二段中“There is some evidence that too many takeaways is linked to weight gain, but the relationship isn’t clear. (有一些证据表明,吃太多的外卖与体重增加有关,但这种关系尚不清楚)”可知,吃太多的外卖与体重增加有关之间的关系尚不清楚,即研究人员对外卖与体重增加的因果关系尚不清楚,故选A。
22.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“The worst offenders on any menu are likely to be fried foods, or anything covered in high-sugar sauces. If you order Chinese food, go for steamed dumplings, grilled fish or soup. If you are going for Indian food, go heavy on the side dishes, like bean and potato curries, which are often more flavourful and healthy.(在任何菜单上危害最大的可能是油炸食品,或任何上面浇着高糖酱汁的食物。如果你点中国菜,可以点蒸饺、烤鱼或者汤。如果你想吃印度菜,那就多吃一些配菜,比如咖喱豆和土豆,它们通常更加美味和健康)”以及结合选项推知,作者认为蒸饺是对人身体产生最小危害的外卖,故选D。
23.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“It’s easy for takeaways to become a regular habit. At some point, you have to wonder: even if you don’t look different in the mirror, is it doing you any harm?(外卖很容易成为一种习惯。在某些时候,你不得不怀疑:即使你在镜子里看起来没有什么不同,这对你有什么害处吗?)”可知,文章主要就外卖是否对人身体有害进行了讨论。B项“外卖有害吗?”适合作文章标题,故选B。

25.推理判断题。根据第三段的“In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough to break through as a woman, even harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother.(在纽约,喜剧演员通常是留胡子的年轻人。作为一个女人,想要突破已经很困难了,对于一个年纪大到已经是他们祖母的人来说,就更难了)”推知,作者提到留胡子的年轻人是为了表明她所面临的挑战——性别和年龄。故选A。
根据倒数第三段的“Even today, I’m nervous before I step out. My first line is, “Hello, everybody. I’m 88 and three-quarters years old. I’m telling you that in case I don’t make it all the way through the show.” Then people laugh and I relax.(直到今天,我出门前还是很紧张。我的第一句话是:“大家好。我88又四分之三岁了。我告诉你这些是为了以防我没能撑到最后。”然后人们笑了,我也放松了)”可知,作者自第一次表演后尝试用调侃自己的年龄做开场,这样自己和听众都很放松。故选D。
27.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的“They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased I can show that as an older person you don’t need to take a back seat in life.(他们说,当他们到了我这个年纪时,他们想和我一样活跃。我很高兴我能证明,作为一个老年人,你不需要在生活中退居二线)”和最后一段的“I’ve no intention of stopping comedy. I’m taking all these pills, trying to stay alive, and I hope to still be performing when I’m 100.(我无意停止演喜剧。我吃了这么多药,努力活下去,我希望我100岁的时候还能继续表演)”推知,作者认为年龄只是一个数字而已,无论到了哪个年龄阶段,我们都可以做自己喜欢且有意义的事情。故选A。

根据第一段“In order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius — a suggested safe threshold (阈值,界限) — carbon neutrality by mid-21st century is essential. This target is also laid down in the Paris agreement signed by 195 countries, including the EU, which aims to reach global peaking of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible and to undertake rapid reductions. (为了将全球变暖限制在1.5摄氏度——一个建议的安全阈值——到21世纪中期实现碳中和至关重要。包括欧盟在内的195个国家签署的《巴黎协定》也规定了这一目标,旨在尽快达到全球温室气体排放峰值,并采取快速减排措施。)”和下文内容可知,第一段提出“碳中和”这一目标,下文围绕其展开,所以第一段的目的是引入话题。故选A项。
根据第二段中“Carbon neutrality means having a balance between emitting carbon and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere in carbon sinks. (碳中和意味着在碳汇中排放碳和从大气中吸收碳之间保持平衡。)”可知,如果实现碳中和,二氧化碳的产生量将与其去除量一样,达到平衡。故选D项。
37.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Carbon sink is any system that absorbs more carbon than it emits. The main natural carbon sinks are soil, forests and oceans. According to estimates, natural sinks remove between 9.5 and 11 Gt of CO2 per year. Annual global CO2 emissions reached 38.0 Gt in 2019.
根据倒数第二段“The European Union is committed to achieving the carbon neutrality by 2050. (欧盟致力于到2050年实现碳中和。根据《绿色协议》(Green Deal),欧洲的目标是到2050年成为第一个二氧化碳排放量与排放量相当的大陆。2020年10月7日,欧洲议会支持到2050年实现气候中和,到2030年实现与1990年水平相比减排60%的目标,超过了委员会提出的55%的目标。)”和最后一段“In addition, members called for all EU countries individually to become climate neutral and insisted that after 2050, more CO2 should be removed from atmosphere than is emitted. Also, all direct or indirect subsidies (补贴) to fossil fuels should be canceled by 2025 at the latest. (此外,成员国呼吁所有欧盟国家各自实现气候中立,并坚持在2050年之后,从大气中去除的二氧化碳应该多于排放的二氧化碳。此外,最迟在2025年取消对化石燃料的所有直接或间接补贴。)”可推知,欧盟在碳排放目标上雄心勃勃。故选D项。

75.推理判断题。根据第四段中““It was a one-of-a-kind and really interesting event,” German said of the most recent encounter, which he described as “another indication of why we need to conserve the ocean and the incredible creatures that call it home.”(“这是一个独一无二的,非常有趣的事件,”German谈到最近的相遇时说,他说这是“为什么我们需要保护海洋和把海洋称为家的不可思议的生物的另一个迹象。”)”
根据倒数第二段中“However, as a great lover of jellyfish (水母), its greed for food often leads it to confuse plastic bags with its favorite dish, making seawater pollution one of its main threats alongside overfishing.(然而,作为水母的超级爱好者,它对食物的贪婪常常导致它把塑料袋和它最喜欢的食物混淆在一起,这使得海水污染与过度捕捞一起成为它的主要威胁之一。)”
