Everything they know about you came through this device, sometimes from hundreds of miles away. Yet they feel they can know you just from the sound of your voice. That’s how powerful the 2 is.
Powerful, yes, but not always 3 . For years I dealt with my travel agent only by phone. Rani, my faceless agent whom I’d never met 4 , got me rock-bottom prices on airfares, cars, and hotels. But her cold voice really 5 me. I sometimes wished to find another agent.
One morning, I had to 6 an immediate flight home for a family emergency. I ran into Rani’s office 7 . The woman sitting at the desk, seeing my madness, sympathetically jumped up. She gave me a 8 smile, nodded while listening patiently, and then printed out the 9 immediately. ”What a wonderful lady!“ I thought.
Rushing out 10 I called out over my shoulder, “By the way, what’s your name?” “I’m Rani,” she said. I turned around and saw a 11 woman with a big smile on her face waving to wish me a safe trip. I was 12 ! Why had I thought she was cold? Rani was, well, so 13 .
Sitting back in the car on the way to the airport, I figured it all out. Rani’s 14 —her warm smile, her nods, her “I’m here for you” 15 —were all silent signals that didn’t travel through wires.

What do you think a former football player might do in retirement? 31 a school cafeteria employee probably won’t come to your mind.

I seldom believe in luck, but I have really had a string of the bad kind lately. Last week my 15-year-old washing machine 46 . I tried to fix it online but 47 realized the repairs would cost more than a(n) 48 machine. Then this week my daughter’s broke, too. Once again, it was beyond any easy repair. I ended up having to 49 two new washing machines, putting a couple of big decreases in my credit cards. Both got 50 quickly but l was still annoyed about the 51 period I was going through.
Somehow my 52 traveled back to my childhood. I saw Mum’s hand loading an old fashioned wringer (绞拧器) washing machine with my dirt jeans and muddy shirts. She had to put each 53 through a pair of wringers. After the washing she would often pat the machine 54 — growing up hand washing clothes she was deeply 55 for the machine that did so much of the work for her.
I began to think about it. I have been blessed with so much more than Mum, yet I was 56 in the problems and 57 of modern life instead of thanking for all I have. I felt guilty and thanked for that 58 memory.
The good old days had their share of struggles as well as 59 . So do the good new days. What 60 is how we live and what we learn from them.

Driving on the mountain road where I live can be both a delight and an adventure. Yet, you should also watch for deer and squirrels 121 the road as well as fallen trees and rocks that may break loose from and 122 down the side of the hill.
I 123 upon one big rock just the other day. I saw a car just ahead of me narrowly turn around it. But the stone was 124 there, which might cause traffic accidents. I turned round and then 125 over to a wide spot. I knew a rock of this 126 would break parts of a low riding car like mine if the driver didn’t see it 127 . So I walked over and moved the huge stone. It must have weighed 50 pounds, but with all my strength, I removed it. I felt relieved and walked back to my car.
The happening reminded me too of an old 128 I had read once: In a faraway land, a king had placed a huge rock on the way to his palace. Many nobles walked by and surrounded it, complaining that the king didn’t keep the road up better. Finally, a 129 farmer pulling a cart (马车) of vegetables arrived. He 130 and pushed the rock off the road. Then he saw under it was a bag of gold coins that the king had left for the one who 131 the path for those who came after. Later, he was not as badly off as before.
Now while there wasn’t any 132 under the rock I moved, my heart did feel more 133 as I was driving back home. Maybe the real 134 is the joy we spread, and the 135 we share.
