Lily’s sister, Maya, was going home from college for the summer vacation. The day was special for 11-year-old Lily. Lily could’t wait to go to the movie and the pool—what they did together in the past.
When Maya returned home, the sisters embraced each other warmly. Usually, Lily made dessert at night while Maya would share her college experiences. But this time, the elder sister told that she had other plans. In spite of her disappointment, Lily expected them to do something together.
For breakfast the next morning, Lily invited Maya to go shopping together, and Lily wanted Maya to help her pick some summer clothes and would treated Maya to a big feast. However, Maya made friends again, only to promise that they could spend some time together at night.
So Lily rented a movie to enjoy that day. However, when Maya came home that afternoon, she told Lily that she had invited some friends over. Lily pretended to be reading, actually hiding the tears in her eyes. She didn’t want to be jealous of Maya and her friends, but she missed her sister’s company, and when Maya’s friends arrived, Lily began to make tricks. She deliberately interrupted their conversation, asking questions unrelated to the discussion, and even commented on them. Even when everyone watched TV, Lily deliberately changed the channel. But when Lily went to bed, she was ashamed. Maya was very uncomfortable and looked hurt, but didn’t blame Lily.
For several days, Lily couldn’t find a good chance to apologize to her sister. When Maya’s friends visited again, Lily was eager to join them in the backyard but decided not to. She was afraid she would make the situation worse.

    Caught in “the Web”!
Dave and Kelly loved their computer. Their parents got it for them a couple of months ago, and they had taught their kids how to use it. They bought some computer games for the kids to play and connected the computer to the Internet. The kids loved going on the Internet and visiting websites. They got to do research for their homework, play games, print colouring pages and read stories. They also got to email their friends and even chat with other kids, after getting their parents’ permission.
Because the kids liked the Internet so much, they would finish their homework, and then go to surf the Internet. Very often, they didn’t feel the passage of time and found themselves almost falling asleep in front of the computer screen.
One day they stayed up late surfing the Internet after they were done with their homework. They watched a video about a science fiction story, which described two alien species hunting human information, because aliens had a wicked intention to conquer the Earth. The species coming from a distance tried to collect every aspect of data about humans, but in vain. They were detected and driven away by watchful humans. After a while they started getting tired and they were almost falling asleep. While they were in the twilight between being asleep and being awake, they felt a strong suction coming from the computer screen. It felt like a huge vacuum cleaner!
By now, they were fully awake, but when they looked around, they did not see their living room anymore. Instead, they were drawn into the computer itself by that mysterious power. They were surrounded by a complex system of tubes and small boxes and columns. They were all in different shapes, such as being tall, short, wide, narrow, round, square, etc. More strangely, they all felt a little warm and some even were shining with real, blue or orange light. They saw themselves floating in a long tube with speeding chunks of alphabets, numbers, images and sounds. They were INSIDE the computer!
    注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Their dream came true and they decided to let loose and drift along the long tubes and have some fun.

Once upon a time, there was a boy who always enjoyed listening to his mother’s story about the statue (雕像) standing beside their house.
The statue’s name was Miriad, who was the symbol of kindness. People who walked by the statue showed their respect through bowing (鞠躬) in front of Miriad’s statue. It became a tradition in their village that everyman who died due to helping others would be honored as Miriad, and would be remembered by all the people.
One night, the boy asked his mother how Miriad gained his respect from all the people in this village. “He was just a simple man,” his mother said. “He helped people selflessly, thinking others first.” “Well, I can also do that,” the boy proudly told his mother. His mother continued, “That is the reason why people made Miriad a statue, for you child to copy and not to forget.”
One morning, the boy saw a little girl crying under an apple tree. “Why do you cry?” the boy asked. “I was trying to get myself some fruit from this apple tree and suddenly I fell down from it,” the little girl explained. “Let me do it for you,” the boy said. He started to climb up the tree and picked as many apples a she could. After a while, the boy jumped down from the tree and gave all the apples to the little girl.

    Your Name in Gold
Anne sat at the breakfast table, eating her cornflakes and reading the print on the cereal box in front of her. “Taste Cornflakes — Great New Offer!” the box read. “See back of box for details.”
Anne’s older sister, Mary, sat across from her, reading the other side of the cereal box. “Hey, Anne,” she said, “look at this awesome prize — ‘your name in gold’.”
As Mary read on, Anne’s interest in the prize grew. “Just send in one dollar with proof-of-purchase seal from this box and spell out your first name on the information blank. We will send you a special pin with your name spelled in gold. (Only one per family, please.)”
Anne grabbed the box and looked on the back, her eyes brightening with excitement. “That’s a neat idea,” she said. “A pin with my very own name spelled out in gold. I’m going to send in for it.”
“Sorry,Anne, I saw it first,” said Mary, “so I get first dibs on it. Besides, you don’t have a dollar to send in, and I do.”
“But I want a pin like that so badly,” said Anne. “Please let me have it!”
    “No,” said her sister.
“You always get your way-just because you’re older than me,” said Anne, her lower lip trembling as her eyes filled with tears. “Just go ahead and send in for it. See if I care!” She threw down her spoon and ran from the kitchen.

Last week, I watched an old couple when they walked through a thrift (节俭) store. I had just dropped of a bag of clothes. When I got the opportunity, I stopped by just to look through the old records that had music recorded on them.
Anyway, this couple moved slowly in search of items they had on a list they held tight in hand. They didn’t say much, but occasionally talked with the other and picked an item up. “No, it’s not suitable for her and she dislikes it,” one would say and move on.
My curiosity always got the best of me until I satisfied it by asking. “Can I help you find something?” I asked. They stopped, looking at me. Then the man said, “We are looking for old things that look new. Every new year in the past we tried to begin the year with new things. It was a goal to surround ourselves with things fresh so that we had new hopes for the year ahead. More importantly, we can give some gifts to Eva.”
“Eva? Who is she?” I asked. “She is a lovely 10-year-old girl we adopted. Her parents died in a traffic accident. She always wants to be a singer,” the man replied. I felt sad and said, “I’m sorry for the girl. Can you tell me how does your search work out?” The lady sighed and said, “It took a long time for us to find a special gift, but we discovered it was in vain (徒劳的).”
I knew it’s difficult for the couple to solve the problem, so I decided to take action. I said to them: “I can do you a favor. Please wait here for me.”

    6.阅读下面短文,根据其内容及所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Missy,” I cried to my wife. “Did you put this banana skin on my desk?” “No, honey, Meghan probably did.” As I’d feared, she had missed the real purpose of my question, which was to make it clear to her that she hadn’t done her job of defending my desk against the invader — our naughty girl. I abandoned the conversation.
I sat at my desk and stared at the screen. I waited patiently for ideas to come to me as I tried to think up exam questions for a test I would give my English students. My wife was off to a party somewhere, but I was not alone. Meghan, our 22-month-old angel, kept me company. Yet her plans seemed to go against mine.
She followed a daily routine that was both time-consuming and challenging. It included certain basic tasks: watching the fish, sweeping the floor in her room, climbing up and down on her bed.
At first I was able to concentrate on designing my test paper. But I was soon sidetracked. I had not counted on the arrival of the “bib-bibs” — “bib-bibs” were birds. “Bib-bibs, bib-bibs!” Meghan screamed excitedly, her eyes alive with expectation. She insisted that I come with her to the window.
“In a minute. Just let me finish this question.” I said. She pulled me by the hand (two fingers, actually) toward the window. I saw myself as a fool, being led to watch the “bib-bibs”. They chattered and leaped back and forth on the lawn just outside our apartment window. Meghan was absorbed, but as I watched them, I still thought about my work. With her attention off me, I left the window and went back to my desk.
Five minutes later, she returned. She reached up to my keyboard and pressed a bunch of keys, adding a long line of scrabbled letters to my question. I struggled to bring my annoyance under control. “No, thank you, Meghan. Daddy’s seen your work. I’ll do it myself.” She backed off.

It was Christmas, and Jase stopped before the Christmas tree, looking for his Christmas present. As Jase saw it was a firetruck, he couldn’t contain his excitement. “A firetruck? Wow!” he cried out so loudly that his father, who was outside clearing snow, and his mother, who was in the kitchen, hurried to the living room.
“Mom, Dad, Santa gave me superpowers! Don’t tell anyone, but I wrote letters to him, and I asked him… and I… Mom, Dad, I’ll become a firefighter! Yes, I will become a firefighter when I grow up!”
Jase had learned at school that firefighters were true heroes who saved people from danger. So the little boy wished to be a firefighter, and all his favorite toys were also related to firefighters!
“Do you like the present?” his mother asked.
“I love it, Mom!” said Jase.
“Well, that’s great!” his father said. “But you woke up your little sisters sleeping upstairs, and you’re going to have to help me calm them down!”
    “Okay!” Jase smiled.
Jase’s family had his twin sisters, Milly and Rosie, his dad, Peter, and his mom, Lydia. They were happy in their tiny home.
Jase was so happy with his Christmas present that he spent the whole day driving his toy truck. He also gave his little sisters a ride in it, and they loved it.
“Saving all that money was worth it,” Peter told Lydia over Christmas dinner. “Jase seems to love the truck, and the girls are happy, too.”
“Well, we had to do this even though we were on a tight budget (预算),” said Lydia, watching her kids play with the truck.
When everyone was asleep, Jase was too exited to fall asleep and he decided to take his truck down to the living room and play with it. As he went down the stairs, trying not to make a noise, and reached the living room, he began driving it around.

“This year is going to be different,” Mark told himself every year. He always said that he would start exercising more and eating less. Every year he made the same resolution (决定), but every year he failed to keep it. However, this year Mark knew it was going to be different because he decided to make changes to his resolution. He learned that it should be more specific for his goal. Only in this way could he be more focused and know exactly where to begin.
Losing weight by taking exercise is very common. Without guidance, Mark was less likely to reach his goal. This year he decided to run at least one mile every day, which was easy for him. He also said that he tried to eat at least five fruits a week. It could be realized since Mark used to eat two fruits per week at most. As weeks went on, Mark found it easier to keep his resolution because he knew what he had to do. In the past, he would exercise once in a while and eat a diet only sometimes. He did not have a plan on what he was going to do at that time.
Now he did so well that he reached his goal. He felt great about the changes he was making; he felt happier and healthier gradually. He also thought about other things he could do to improve his health. This resolution encouraged him to sleep earlier and drink more water. In the past, he usually watched TV programs for a long time at night. He knew some TV series were boring, but he just couldn’t get up from the sofa because it felt so good. After that he played some video games before going to sleep. Sometimes he forgot about time and went to bed very late. No wonder he felt tired the next morning.
    注意:续写词数应为150左右。

Every afternoon after school, the children used to go and play in the Giant’s garden.
It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass, beautiful flowers, and peach trees whose pink pearly blossoms (花) came out in spring, and that in autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat in the trees and sang so sweetly. The children used to play games there, crying and laughing.
“How happy we are here!” they cried to each other.
One day the selfish Giant came back. When he arrived, he saw the children playing in the garden.
“What are you doing here?” he cried loudly, and the children ran away.
“The garden is my own garden,” said the Giant. “I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.” So he built a high wall all around it, and put up a notice board reading, “No Entry!”
The poor children had nowhere to play. They tried to play on the road, but the read was very dusty and full of hard stones, so they did not like it. They used to wander around the high wall when their lessons were over, and talk about the beautiful garden inside. “How happy we were there!” they said to each other.
Then the spring came, and all over the country there were blossoms and birds. Only in the garden of the selfish Giant was it still winter. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom. When they saw the notice board, they were so sorry for the children. The only ones who were pleased were the snow and the frost (霜). “Spring has forgotten this garden.” they cried, “so we will live here all year round.” The snow covered up the grass, and the frost painted all the trees silver. Then they invited the cold north wind to stay with them.
“Why is the spring so late to come?” said the selfish Giant, looking out of the window at his cold white garden. “I hope there will be a change in the weather in the garden.”

    The Miracle Coat
A few years ago, I was having dinner with some good friends from work to celebrate the upcoming Christmas holiday. As we were finishing up the evening, one of my friends told us a very sad story about something that had happened the day before. Her son’s friend was in his mid-twenties and self-employed. He lived on the second floor of a house nearby. Someone who lived on the first floor had been smoking and fell asleep. The house burned down. All the occupants escaped, but the house was completely destroyed with everything in it. All this young man had were the clothes on his back and his pickup truck. He had no family in the area and nowhere to go. My friend was putting him up for a few days until he could decide what to do next. Those of us sitting at the dinner table were horrified. Everyone started opening their wallets to contribute money. My friend put up her hand and said, “He will not accept money. We tried to convince him, but he thinks it is charity and won’t take it. All he wants is a warm coat and some used clothing if anyone has some.” We were all more than happy to fulfill this request and were told that he wore a size 2XL. None of us knew men who wore that size, so it was going to be a bit of a challenge to take care of this quickly.
It was a typically cold New York Christmas, and I couldn’t imagine him without a coat. I shed some tears on the drive home, a combination of grateful tears for the many blessings I had in my life and sad tears for this poor, young man and his troubles. I went to bed and woke up in the middle of the night with a very clear thought in my mind. I was to visit a nearby thrift store(旧货商店) and find this young man a coat. The next morning I got dressed and went to the thrift shop. I was there when it opened at nine.

1.That night, Lily considered a lot. She studied the photograph of the two smiling girls that was on the nightstand. Next to the picture, she noticed some letters and cards that she had sent to Maya at school. The letters reminded Lily of how much she had enjoyed writing to her big sister. She decided to write Maya a letter apologizing for her behaviour. Minutes later Maya knocked on Lily’s door. “I’m the one who should be apologizing,” Maya said. “No. It’s me. I’m sorry that I’ve been so selfish. I didn’t realize how much I had hurt your feelings,” Lily said quickly.
Lily invited Maya to sit beside her on the bed. Maya saw the letter Lily had been writing. Maya picked it up and read. “I felt ashamed to ruin your party with your friends but I was eager to join in your new friends. I didn’t know how to express myself.” Maya was moved and hugged Lily. “At school I read your letters over and over again, too. They helped me bear being away from home,” Maya said. Maya suggested that they could make some popcorn and then watched a movie. Both of them smiled.

Several weeks passed. One day the mailman brought a small package addressed to Mary. Mary took the package to her room. Anne casually followed her in and sat on the bed. “Well, I guess they sent you your pin,” Anne said in a mean voice. Mary slowly took the paper off the package. She opened a little white box and carefully lifted off the top layer of white cotton. “Oh, it’s beautiful!” Mary said. “Just like the cereal box said.”
“Would you like to see it, Anne?” Mary asked. “No, I don’t care,” said Anne. Mary put the box on the dresser and went downstairs. Anne was alone in the bedroom. Soon she couldn’t wait any longer, so she walked over to the dresser. As she looked in the small white box, she gasped. Mixed feelings of love for her sister and shame at herself welled up within her, and the pin became a sparkling gold blur through her tears. There on the pin were four beautiful letters — her name in gold: A-N-N- E.

After arriving home, I found an old record which was given by my grandparents when I was ten years old. I believed Eva would love it.
When I returned to the store, the couple sat near the counter. Seeing me, they waved to me. I ran to them with the record in my hand. The man was surprised and asked me where I had gone. I gave them the record and told them, “This is a gift from my grandparents, and now it belongs to Eva.” The couple felt happy and showed their appreciation to me. After a few seconds, out of the corner of my eye, I saw tears rolling down her cheek. I felt so terrible that I regretted what I had said. I had to correct my mistake.
I finally surrendered myself to the “little queen” and took her to the park. I turned to her and said, “Sorry, let’s go to see more ‘bib-bibs’!” She was so excited that she smiled through tears. The children went in through the broken part, with smiles on their faces and green branches in their hands. Wherever they went across the garden, the winter and frost were driven away, trees turning green and blossoms coming out. Surprisingly, with more children pouring into the garden, birds flew back, singing. It was obvious that it was not trees, nor flowers, nor birds but the children who brought again spring into this garden that was surrounded by the high wall.
The Giant thought about what had happened and decided to change his attitude(态度) toward the children. Not only did the garden hope for spring, but he himself was expecting the green world. Looking at the children playing in the garden, the Giant discovered the lovely and lively children were the spring. Then he became guilty about his selfish act. He thought to himself. “For days and months I have continued to keep the spring out of my garden. No, it’s the garden of all.” Without hesitation, he broke the high wall and allowed the children in.

10.However, I went through every coat and jacket but found nothing even close to what I needed. Suddenly, a lady came out of the back room, so I stopped to ask if she had anything in the back in that size. I explained the poor young man’s story. She went in the back and returned a few minutes later saying there was nothing else. I was upset. However, a moment later, another woman came out of the back with what looked like a brand-new down parka in her arms. She said, “This was dropped in our overnight bin. It was the only thing in the bin. Is this what you’re looking for?” It was perfect! I was stunned and could barely speak.
This was a Christmas miracle! There was certainly no other explanation for why I, a perfect stranger, was somehow charged with finding him a coat. Or why there just happened to be only one item, the perfect coat, left in the overnight bin of this thrift store. (176 words)
