My daughter was a shy child, not a joiner. My memories of her early years involve me gently urging her to try 31 activities, like bouncing teddies with other kids at playgroup. When she was four, she attended her first class in the local gymnastic club’s recreational program. She loved her lessons, and I loved taking her there. When she showed friends what she could do, she showed 32 .
Two years later, a new teacher 33 . She was a perfectionist, and I felt 34 when she complained about my daughter’s careless form. The harder she pushed, the less 35 my kid was. I decided to chat with the teacher after one class and thought I saw something in her face: she didn’t like my daughter. 36 I didn’t register for the next term.
The decision troubled me for 37 . I suggested rejoining a later session, but my daughter quietly 38 . Then, one day when she was about 13, she cried unexpectedly: “I wanted to stay in that gymnastics class! I 39 wanted to quit!”
I was shocked. Had I misread the situation? Did I keep my daughter from working it out on her own terms? I shared my 40 with a child and family expert. “You have to respect that she doesn’t want to do all the things you want to do,” Kolari told me.
41 we talked, I realized I’d ignored all the activities my daughter followed on her own. She taught 42 to knit (编织) at eight and quickly surpassed me in skill. She can program a computer. Her 43 always impressed me, so why did I always keep thinking about group activities?
44 there’s one truth to a tight-scheduled child, it’s that parents involve themselves too much in their kids’ activities. I did make one 45 when my daughter reached high school: she had to take a music class. Right around that time, she 46 a friend’s guitar. She 47 a band and learned drums, then guitar. But 48 of this required my encouragement.
“If your child is 49 home because they’re afraid of failure, it’s worth 50 them,” Kolari says.

I used to be the shyest person in the world. I hid behind my older sister, whenever I had to speak to (an) 81 person—including the McDonald’s cashier, or even a distant relative.
82 asked to speak in class, I could hardly 83 , much less speak. Even among the few friends I had, my high, timid (羞怯的) voice earned me jokes—about being a girl. Then in the seventh grade, my sister suggested I 84 voice lessons. After a little bit of 85 , I did—as long as it stayed a secret. I began a series of vocal (发声的) exercising. After exercising a lot, I finally gained 86 in my voice.
A few months later, I was asked to sing for some retired people. I thought I would do better than before 87 the voice lessons. I opened my mouth and nothing. I couldn’t remember the words of the song! My face turned hot. The 88 pianist whispered a prompt (提示), and I remembered just enough to keep singing. Then the thought 89 me: I’ve embarrassed myself enough in front of this 90 . There’s really nothing else to lose. So in my second song, I just 91 and felt the energy of the song lift me. And I did much better.
After that, I started singing to myself as 92 as I could in my own room. That’s something I would never have done before. On a recent school trip, I was asked to sing again. It was 93 how much people liked my singing. One classmate: 94 said that I should be in the school’s talent show.
I am not a shy person any more. 95 has made me more outgoing. Today, I’m almost a loudmouth. I can meet people without being afraid. I can also stand in front of the whole class and give a big speech. I am proud of myself.

And had some seniors delayed their own dreams because they had been 147 busy caring for others?

Seniors can apply; wishes are then assessed by a committee that looks at factors such as 155 conditions and financial need.
Although their 156 operates only in Nova Scotia, each WAY wish is recorded and spread through a video. Mahoney and Chisholm have their own 157 — the pair want people to be 158 to realize a dream for a senior. “We want to create a nationwide movement that 159 how we view and support seniors,” says Mahoney. “That is considered our social mission, and that is the difference our organization is trying to make to the 160 .”
