Tom was working in a big company. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn’t wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother’s Day, and he usually tried to make it “back home”, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do. I’ll send my mother some roses.”
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a boy talking to the girl in it. “How many roses can I get for five dollars?” the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the boy would be happy with something else.
“No. I have to buy roses,” he said. “My mom was badly sick last year and I didn’t get to spend much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because those are her favorite.” He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked up at Tom and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Tom was touched by the boy’s voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Tom had been blessed (幸运的) in his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy’s roses.
The girl looked at the boy and said, “OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran out of the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Tom ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have them delivered (递送) to his mother. After that, with relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a graveyard (墓地).

    2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Forty-three years seems like a long time to remember the name of someone you don’t know so well. I have forgotten the name of an old lady, who was a customer on the paper route in my home town when I was a twelve-year-old boy. Yet it dwells in my memory that not only she made delicious cookies but also she taught me a lesson in forgiveness that I shall never forget.
On a winter afternoon, a friend and I were throwing stones onto the slanted roof of the old lady’s house from a spot near her backyard. The object of our play was to observe how the stones changed to missiles as they rolled to the roof’s edge and shot out into the yard like comets (彗星) falling from the sky. I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and threw it out. The stone was too smooth, however, so it slipped from my hand as I let it go and headed straight not for the roof but for a small window on the old lady’s back porch. At the sound of fractured (断裂破裂的) glass, we knew we were in trouble. We turned tail and ran faster than any of our missiles flew off her roof.
I was too scared about getting caught that first night to be concerned about the old lady with the broken window in winter. However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn’t been discovered, I started to feel guilty for her misfortune. She still greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the paper, but I was no longer able to act comfortable in her presence.
I made up my mind that I would save my paper delivery money, and in three weeks I had the seven dollars that I calculated would cover the cost of her window. I put the money in an envelope with a note explaining that I was sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost for repairing it.

Joe was an old man aged 75. He lived happily with a beautiful family. Then his children grew up and moved to different cities in pursuit of a good career and future. He was left living in a small village carrying the memories of his dead wife.
Joe had four grandchildren. They used to visit him during their holidays. It was now their vacation time and Joe was eagerly waiting for their arrival. He prepared his home for the kids, cleaning the house, mowing (修剪) the garden, and buying their favourite foods and dresses.
In the process of these busy arrangements, he lost his watch. The watch was gifted by his dead wife when their first child was born. Joe treasured the watch. After his wife’s death, it became his only companion with its “tick, tick” sound throughout the silent night.
He was happy with the kids at home and forgot about the missing watch. It was only the next day when he was about to take a bath that he remembered the watch was lost. He saw it last when he was arranging things in the barn (谷仓).
He was very upset. His grandchildren asked him why he was feeling so low and what was troubling him. Joe said, “Dear children, I lost the most precious watch I have ever had and ever got in my life. It was a gift from your grandma. I lost it while cleaning the house! I feel like I’m missing my heart.” The children tried to comfort him. One granddaughter asked, “Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last before it went missing?” Joe said, “I guess when I was cleaning the barn!” The children rushed to the barn to search for the watch.
The barn was full of waste materials, books, broken furniture, etc. They searched for more than two hours with the help of Joe, but could not find it Joe was completely at a loss and asked the children to stop searching. All felt sad and left, disappointed.

Brian Williams left the house with a lunchbox full of food every day. His mom enjoyed preparing home-made meals for him, believing home-cooked food was much healthier than the food in the school cafeteria.
Every time Brian went home from school, his lunchbox would be empty. Mrs. Williams was pleased, thinking Brian enjoyed the meals prepared for him. However, she wondered why he would head straight to the kitchen to pounce (猛扑) on more food every afternoon.
“You’re such a growing boy, huh? Go ahead and cat,” Mrs. Williams once said, patting his head as he ate the snack she had prepared. Brian nodded silently as he continued to devour (吞食) his food.
Little did Mrs. Williams know that Brian had been going to school without food. His classmates would play jokes on him, thinking he didn’t have enough money for paid meals at the cafeteria. Brian paid no attention to them. Instead, he hid in the playground while everyone ate their meals in the classroom or cafeteria. He would sit on the swings alone, waiting for the bell to ring for their next class.
Soon, his teachers got concerned about all the teasing Brian received from his classmates and they wondered why he had never eaten anything during the lunch break. They knew he came from a well-off family and that he would have been given money to buy food at the cafeteria if he had not brought home-made lunch.
Whenever they asked him where his food was, he’d make excuses—he left his lunch at home, he wasn’t hungry, or he ate before lunchtime. But his teachers weren’t convinced, so they decided to give Brian’s mom a call. “Brian hasn’t been eating. Mrs. Williams,” a teacher revealed. “He gives us excuses every day about why he doesn’t have lunch with him.”
“But that’s impossible!” Mrs. Williams shouted. “He leaves with his lunchbox every day and I make sure that his lunchbox is filled. Where does the food go?” she said, surprised.

I keep a two-dollar bill in my wallet that was given to me by my mother when I was six years old. I still remember the day when she pulled me into the living room and said, “You are brilliant in my mind, but if you fail once don’t give up. Don’t fear failure. It is a way of getting us to try harder. You will succeed, I promise.”
She looked at me and continued, “I want you to carry this two-dollar bill for extra good luck.”
“Thanks mom,” I replied. “I will keep it close to me always.”
I am not superstitious(迷信的), but from that day on the bill goes with me wherever I go. I firmly believe that luck would follow me everywhere.
Every morning I would get dressed and my two-dollar bill went into my pocket. My mother passed away when I was 17 years old and I remember taking out my two-dollar bill. I held it in my hand for the longest time and knew that she would be watching over me the rest of my life.
Each time I felt I had a crisis on my hands, I would reach for my two-dollar bill and set it on the table. I would stare at it for several hours and could always come up with a solution.
When I applied for my first job, I was thirty years old and very shy. The thought of being interviewed for a job was scary but I had to work. On my first interview, as I sat in the waiting room, I noticed there were five women ahead of me. All of the women were younger and very well dressed. One of them looked perfect in her blue striped suit with matching purse and shoes. I knew I was up against women better qualified by looking at the length of their resumes(简历).

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

George’s mother was very poor. Instead of having bright blazing fires in winter, she had nothing to burn but dry sticks, which George picked up from under the trees and hedges.
One fine day in July, his sick mother sent George to the woods, which were about two miles from the village in which she lived. He was to stay there all day to get as much wood as he could collect.
It was a bright, sunny day, and George worked very hard; so that by the time the sun was high, he was hot, and wished for a cool place where he might rest and eat his dinner. While he hunted for a spot about the bank he saw among the moss some fine, wild strawberries, which were a bright scarlet with ripeness.
”How good these will be my bread and butter!“thought George. Lining his little cap with leaves he set to work eagerly to gather all he could find and then seated himself by the brook.
It was a pleasant place, and George felt happy and contented. He thought how much his mother would like to see him there, and to be there herself, instead of in her dark close room in the village.
George thought of all this and just as he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he said to himself, ”How much mother would like these!“and he stopped, putting the strawberry back again. ”Shall I save them for her?“said he, thinking how much they would refresh her, yet still looking at them with a longing eye.
”I will eat half, and take the other half to her, “said he at last, and he divided them into two heaps(t). But each heap looked so small, that he put them together again.
”I will only taste one“thought he. As he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest and he put it back. ”I will keep them all for her, "he said with great happiness, and he covered them up nicely, ready to take home.

Once a middle aged man lost his job and was looking for a job to support his living. One day, in a newspaper he found that a job of “office boy” was available. He needed a job so badly that he applied for the post of “office boy” at once. It was at a big famous company.
Next day he was called for an interview. The manager interviewed him and gave him a test. Surprisingly, he cleared the test, which meant he was hired and he could make money. He was pleased beyond description. “Now give me your e-mail address so that I can send you further details and your joining letter,” the manager said. Sadly, he replied, “Sir, I don’t have a computer and neither do I have any e-mail address.” The manager replied, “What? You don’t have an e-mail address? In modern times, if you don’t have it, which suggests you don’t exist and also means you can’t get this job. I am really sorry but you are not hired.”
He left, completely overcome by disappointment. He didn’t know what to do as he had only $200 left in his pocket and no job. He had no hope of getting any other job anytime soon. He didn’t know what to do. He didn’t want to go home without a job. He thought for a long time. Then an idea occurred to him. He decided to go to the supermarket and buy 10 kg vegetables with that money and then went door to door to sell those vegetables. Till evening he was able to sell off all those vegetables and even doubled up his money.
This made him realize that he could survive by this and started to go to supermarket every day early in the morning and bought fresh vegetables and then the whole day he would sell them going door to door. To his delight, by evening he would sell all the vegetables he bought in the morning.
He worked very hard every day and with his determination and persistence, just in 5 years he became a well-established businessman.

When I was young, there was an apple orchard (果园) near my home. The man owning the orchard employed some migrant families to gather apples and care for the trees. They worked hard but got paid and fed little.
Once my grandmother struck up a conversation with one of the young women. Her name was Maria. She and her husband, Tony, were expecting a baby. “We’re going to stay with my parents,” Maria said. “We work here to earn money for the bus ticket.”
“They’re going to need a lot of things when the baby comes,” Grandmother told me when we got home. “Let’s ask God to send angels to help that young couple.”
    “Angels?” I was surprised.
“If we do our part, angels will do the rest.” she said. Grandmother went to the closet and brought out a box filled with S & H trading stamps, which can be used to buy things. She spilled the pile of stamps on to the kitchen table. “You can see I’ve been saving up the stamps for just the right purchase.”
We sat down at the table and looked through the baby section of the S & H content. My eyes fell on a bassinet (摇篮) with a silk canopy (罩篷) over it. “That’s what a young mother will need,” Grandmother said. “Let’s see if we save 20 books of stamps, we can get a bassinet.”
In the coming weeks, we tried hard to collect the stamps, but before Maria and Tony left, we were three books short. And there were no angels helping us with the stamps either.
“Open the content,” Grandmother said. “Let’s pick a bassinet we can afford.” We chose one without a canopy. The next day we went to the Green Stamp store to get it. “Maria will love this one just as much.”
Grandmother assured me as she pushed the door open. I couldn’t help but feel disappointed. Grandmother gave the clerk the information and handed over the 17 books of stamps we saved. The clerk walked to the backroom and returned empty-handed. “I’m sorry,” she said. “We don’t have such a bassinet for the 17 books of stamps.”

    10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a chilly morning in spring. Only a few people were around as I jogged through the park. Ahead was an elderly gentleman sitting on a wooden bench a few feet off the path. I was ready for a break to catch my breath and check my pulse. I sat next to him, looked at my watch, and started counting my heartbeats. After a few seconds, he interrupted my focus by asking how often I jogged. I responded without making eye contact, “Two or three times a week.” He attempted to engage me in the small talk that one engages in with a stranger.
His genuineness and comfortable smile eventually won me over, and soon we were talking about everything under the sun. We first discussed our favorite television programs, great places we had visited, meaningful moments in our lives, paths taken and not taken. Unexpectedly, we began revealing our politics, exchanging our different experiences as parents. He mentioned that his daughter and her ten-year-old son were coming to visit him in a couple of weeks; he hadn’t seen them for two years. How he looked forward to their visit! We chatted as if we had been friends for decades.
I think it was the chill that broke the moment between us. I looked down at my watch. What seemed like a half-hour had actually been three hours! We were totally unaware of time and place. We who were strangers had somehow become soul mates. We said our gentle farewells, “See you around,” smiling and waving as we parted. We knew we probably wouldn’t meet again.
Several days later, while putting newspapers into a recycling bin, I chanced to see the old man’s picture on the back page, in the obituaries (讣告): “Mr. – passed away yesterday… Please send donations to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.” Tears welled up in my eyes and trickled down my cheeks as I drove home. I was also weeping for his daughter and her not having had that moment of closeness with him that I just had on that Sunday morning.

And the other children were also curious about Ted’s going. But the little boy just asked the others not to follow him and to remain silent. All the children kept silent as they were told. Ted was there for about fifteen minutes and then he rushed to his grandfather, holding the watch in his hand. To everyone’s surprise, Ted had found the watch. He gave it to Joe, which made Joe extremely delighted.
They were surprised and asked how he was able to find it. The little boy replied: “I sat there without making any noise, and the barn was so silent. After a few minutes, I heard the ‘tick, tick’ sound and found the watch.” Joe hugged and thanked the little boy. This is the power of silence. If we stay calm when facing difficulty, we are more able to find the solution!

That afternoon, when Brian returned home, his mom asked what he did with the food. Brian simply said he tended to eat it before class when he was hungry. His mom believed him, so she bought him a bigger lunchbox to accommodate more food. Thinking Brian had more than enough food for school, his mom called his teacher to check on him. However, his teacher revealed that the boy still came without lunch. Feeling very confused, Mrs. Williams told Brian’s teacher, “I’ll look into it.”
    Paragraph 2:
The following day, Mrs. Williams handed Brian his lunchbox, deciding to follow him from a long distance away to find the truth. Soon after Brian left, she followed him secretly and noticed that instead of turning right towards the school, he turned left towards the park. When he got to the park grounds, Brian sat next to a girl around his age, who was wearing worn-out clothes and looked weak. She began to eat the food handed to her quickly. Everything became clear to Mrs. Williams. Her young boy was so selfless that he sacrificed his lunch daily for this poor little girl from the orphanage nearby.

I couldn’t believe it. No bassinet for the 17 books of stamps. I eyed the piles of Green Stamps I’d counted on. Maybe angels really do exist only on Christmas cards. Seeing our disappointment, the clerk said, “If you’re interested, we do have another option.” She opened the content. “It costs 20 books, but since the one you wanted isn’t available, I can give you the bassinet as a replacement.” I looked over the counter to see that she was pointing at the very bassinet we had originally chosen!
“That’s a lovely replacement with a canopy,” Grandmother said. She was excited for the bassinet we had been longing for and expressed gratitude for the clerk’s kind offer again and again. I got to know my grandmother’s words “If we do our part, the angels will do the rest.” If we were determined to do something, the real angel would lend us a hand. We arranged for the bassinet to be sent straight to Maria’s mother so it would be waiting when she and Tony arrived.

Arriving home, I sat down and wrote her daughter a brief letter. I described the chance meeting and what we had talked about. I hoped it might ease her grief knowing that her dad loved her and that she was always in his thoughts before his passing. I posted the letter to the address in the obituaries and I did hope that my letter could be of some comfort to her during the saddest time.
It was almost eight months later when an envelope arrived. As I began reading, I realized it was from the old gentleman’s daughter. The letter brought him vividly back to mind: She told me I might be the last person he talked to because he was found dead in the park later that day. She thanked me for staying and talking with her dad to share the sunshine and a nice time in his life. Later, I jogged through the park and approached the bench where the old man sat with a warm feeling for our unexpected meeting.
