In 2021, Liam had graduated from high school and was seeking a “crazy adventure”. He had some experience of biking long distances. His longest trip was biking from Los Angeles to San Francisco. He made short videos of that trip and shared them on TikTok. Some of his videos became quite popular. That bike trip helped him decide to tackle a much longer trip. He’d read a book by someone who had hiked from Oregon to Argentina. Liam wondered what it would be like to bike from the farthest north in the US to the most southern point in South America.
That meant leaving from Prudhoe Bay in Alaska. Liam set out on Aug 1st, 2021. He had a tent, a sleeping bag, a phone, a first-aid kit, and spare parts for his bike. He didn’t have much else. At first Liam’s parents were worried about him taking such a long bike trip alone. But as he carried on, his parents became his strongest supporters. Liam was confident. “As long as I was going south, I knew I was going in the right direction,” he said. By early December, he had reached Mexico.
Mexico was one of Liam’s favorite parts of the trip. But Liam also faced challenges there. For several months, he traveled with a companion, Logan. Some of their belongings were taken away by a robber. At one point, they considered quitting because the extreme heat there made biking difficult. But it cooled down once they reached Central America, and they kept going. During the trip, Liam got very sick more than once. In Colombia, he had a bike accident that left him severely injured. Despite all these difficulties, Liam didn’t give up easily.
After traveling through 14 countries, Liam finally arrived in Argentina on Jan 10th, 2023. Now Liam is heading home. He hopes to write a book about his adventures. He also hopes his experience will encourage others to take up biking or start an adventure of their own.
4、What made Liam decide to cycle for a longer distance?
A. His previous biking experience.
B. His graduation from high school.
C.A book he read about Argentina.
D. Demands from his TikTok fans.
5、How did Liam’s parents feel about his trip originally?
A. Confident. B. Happy. C. Concerned. D. Puzzled.

C. He suffered from an accident and was injured.
D. He was robbed and lost some of his property.
7、Which of the following words best describe Liam?
A. Enthusiastic and kind.

Hearing your siblings(兄弟姐妹) describe their childhood can sometimes be a little confusing. You may even get the sense that you didn’t grow up on the same planet, much less in the same house. It turns out this is normal—and for a good reason.
“Significant changes in family financial status can impact differences in extracurricular activities, schooling, vacations, and other material aspects of childhood between siblings, ’’ said Keneisha McBride, a psychologist at Boston Children’s Hospital. Emotional shifts in parents can play a significant role as well. “Parents may show up very differently depending on their own work commitments and stress levels, “ he said.
Birth order can also shape the way a child interacts with their parents. “For example, the oldest child is often expected to take on more responsibilities and look after younger siblings. ‘‘ Keneisha said. “Younger siblings may have a parent who feels more experienced and therefore may be more relaxed but may have less time to give that child. 99
How parents respond to their kids’ personalities also plays a role. One child may share certain interests and personality characteristics with one or both parents, while another sibling has more of their own distinct personality and interests. So if one kid is passionate about that same sport their parent loves, they may develop a specific connection. Parents respond differently to each child or enjoy spending more time with a child that is easier for them to communicate with and enjoy the company of.
“Siblings need to recognize and respect each other’s differences.” Keneisha said. “If one or more siblings feel that there was unfair and unequal treatment in their childhoods, working through this together can be very beneficial to their relationships. Giving one’s siblings grace to explain their experiences without judgment can help with compassion(同情) . Trying to change other people’s perceptions(感知能力) of their experiences is a futile exercise. Working through one’s own experiences can be healing.”
8、What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. Financial situations influence siblings’ ambition.
B. Siblings are born into different family circumstances.
C. Emotional health of parents is important to children.
D. Siblings are treated differently according to birth order.
9、What might parents expect the oldest child to do?
A. Have high academic expectations.
B. Attend to his or her younger siblings.
C, Share the same interests with siblings.
D. Spend more time accompanying parents.
10、What might help form better relationships between parents and children?
A. The same hobby. B. The ability to judge.
C. The distinct character. D. The sense of responsibility.
11、What does the underlined word “futile” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Practical. B. Useless. C. Enjoyable. D. Fruitful.
Large tanks(箱) full of green algae(藻类), called “liquid trees” are being promoted as a possible solution to air pollution issues in big cities.
The “liquid trees” emerged in late 2021, having been developed by scientists from the University of Belgrade in Serbia. The tanks were designed to remove carbon dioxide(CO2) from city air. The 600-liter tank is filled with algae, which turns CO2 to oxygen as trees and other plants do, harvesting energy from sunlight using chlorophyll(叶绿素).
“The algae replaces two 10-year-old trees or 200 square metres of lawn.” Ivan Spasojevic, one of the scientists working on the project said. The algae is also more efficient than trees at removing CO2 from the atmosphere, acting between 10 to 50 times faster. One species of algae, Chlorella vulgaris, is up to 400 times more effective at harvesting CO2 than trees.
The tanks were a space-efficient alternative for cities with particularly bad air quality, like Belgrade, which has two large coal power plants nearby. “Our goal is not to replace forests but to use this system to fill those urban pockets where there is no room for planting trees or trees struggle to grow due to air pollution.” Spasojevic said.
The algae they have used is single-celled freshwater algae that can be found in ponds and lakes in Serbia. It adapts to the conditions of a city, being able to grow in tap water and high or low temperatures. The tanks also don’t require much care, with the extra algae being created to be removed around every 45 days, followed by adding fresh water and minerals. The extra algae can also be used as fertilizer, in wastewater treatment or for biofuel production.
The “liquid trees” are designed to be multifunctional in a city space, providing a sitting down space, solar-powered lighting at night, and a charging port. They contribute to improving the quality of life, public health and a cleaner environment.
12、How does algae in the large tanks work to clean city air?
A. It turns oxygen into carbon dioxide,
B. It reacts to the liquid in the large tanks.
C. It uses chlorophyll to harvest the sunlight,
D. It absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen,
13、What can we learn from what Spasojevic said in paragraph 4?
A. Algae tanks will take the place of trees,
B. Trees fail to grow in polluted air condition.
C. Algae tanks take up less space than trees,
D. Scientists want to surround the city with forests.
14、What’s the function of the last paragraph?
A. To show the popularity of the invention.
B. To summarize the uses of the “liquid trees”,
C. To introduce the potential of the algae tanks.
D. To tell the future development of the “liquid trees”.
15、What can be the best title for the text?
A. Scientists’ Efforts to End Air Pollution
B. Green Algae Applied to Real-Life Situations
C. “Liquid Trees” Could Help Clean the Air in the City
D. Multifunctional Tanks Bring Convenience to Citizens

六、读后续写
34、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Triiiiiingggggggggggg, the bell rang. Suddenly I felt my heart beating wildly and fear rose within me. I was nervous as I started to feel sick, really sick. I ran to the bathroom and cleaned my face with water. I felt my heart pounding in my chest, hard and loud as I looked into the mirror and murmured(低语) “Come on, you can do this.”
Some were looking forward to this moment for ages, but not me. I become very anxious every time I imagine how uncomfortable it would be on the stage, and being the center of attention. If it was a speech, I could manage, but repeating a scene from a movie that has already been done by professional actors is simply hard because we might get compared to them. But there was no choice. It was arranged by my art teacher, Mr. Smith, who is a tall handsome gentleman wearing big smiles all the time. He is one of the most famous teachers in our school and students love his performance classes a lot.
As I made it to the school hall, I went over the script(剧本) in my head. Suddenly I tensed as I couldn't remember all the lines. Once I was there in the school hall, my brain literally stopped working because of all the noise and the tension in the air.
As soon as the teachers who were supposed to judge our performances entered, the crowd became quiet and the performances began. I was really nervous until the first performer was called, because I was really tired of being the first in everything as my name was the first in the register. But the more I waited, the more tired I got of waiting. There came a point where I, who once was feeling sick and scared of performing, wanted to go on stage and get my performance done.
My heart beat faster than ever and as I walked onto the stage, I was even shaking. When I got up along with my friend, I had a good look around. There were 50 to 60 people. Then I felt really stupid for being scared of having an audience.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was about to introduce myself and start to perform when I saw a smiling face.

34、答案:
I was about to introduce myself and start to perform when I saw a smiling face. It was Mr. Smith, who wears his sweet smile as usual. He showed his thumb up and threw me a look of encouragement. I breathed a sigh of relief, feeling more relaxed. My lines seemed to pour in from my mind and my sweaty hands finally found their right position. I imagined myself a movie star and spared no effort to bring out the emotions of the character. To everyone’s delight, I performed in a smooth and natural way. Once the performance was done, thunderous applause filled the hall and I knew that I made it.
When I got off the stage, Mr. Smith walked up to congratulate me. I could not help giving him a big hug. I looked at him and said, “Thank you. I wouldn’t have made it if it had not been for your encouragement.” Mr. Smith told me the biggest fear was actually myself. I nodded, smiling at him and promised to grab more chances like this to practise. After that, I made several more performances and gradually overcame the stage fear. I would owe it to Mr. Smith, the tall, handsome, smiling teacher.
