Beijing, with co-host Zhangjiakou in neighboring Hebei Province, will host the 2022 Winter Olympics. That will benefit the capital as well as its residents (居民), so the below is something to be expected from the Winter Olympic Games.
Blue skies
It is highly expected that hosting the Winter Olympic Games will push Beijing to reduce pollution and improve the air quality more effectively.
Beijing began carrying out a five-year plan from 2013 that cost 130 billion US dollars to upgrade heating systems, cut car emissions (排放) and close heavily-polluting factories. Such efforts will not only be made in Beijing but in a neighboring Hebei and Tianjin as well, as was suggested by a development action plan to integrate (结合) the three places. Hopefully, blue skies will become a regular feature even after the Games.
Transportation
Although Beijing is the host city of the 2022 Winter Games, Chongli county of Zhangjiakou will host some of the snow events.
The capital region is likely to benefit from investments in infrastructure (基础设施), including the Beijing- Zhangjiakou intercity railways, expansion of Beijing subway systems, upgraded highway networks and another regional airport.
Winter sports
Beijing’s vision is to develop a winter sports market for more than 300 million people in northern China.
With a rich legacy left by the summer Olympics, China plans to reuse 11 of 12 venues built for the 2008 Olympics and only needs to build a new rink for speed skating, effectively easing possible problems of facilities (设施) being left idle after the Games.
Transformation (转变)
On the back of the Winter Olympics, the Beijing municipal (市政的) government is looking at fostering (培育) sports
-related industry as a new growth driver to power its economy.
The goal is to integrate the Winter Games with sustainable development plans for the wider region, focusing on clean energy, green technology, and improvement in ecology and air quality.
Tourism
The country’s plan to develop a winter sports industry will enhance ( 增 强 ) Zhangjiakou’s reputation as a tourist destination by upgrading its transportation system and facilities, such as hotels and restaurants.

The COVID-19 and flu are both respiratory (呼吸的) infectious diseases, with similar symptoms (症状) including fever and cough, but they are not the same.
Both the COVID-19 and flu are diseases caused by a virus. In the case of flu, the pathogens (病原体) are flu viruses, and for COVID-19, it is a novel coronavirus (新型冠状病毒).
Common symptoms for flu and novel coronavirus are nearly identical (相同的) fever, cough and tiredness, sometimes sore throat and diarrhea (腹泻). In severe cases, they result in pneumonia (肺炎), and even deaths in the worst cases. Flu has seasonal ups and downs. Although it can exist all year round, the virus infects more people in winter and spring. As for the novel coronavirus, there is not yet enough evidence showing how it would respond to changing weather.
The mortality rate (死亡率) for the novel coronavirus is higher than that for flu. Generally, people with poor immunity ( 免 疫 力 ), especially children and seniors, are more likely to catch seasonal flu and develop into severe cases. As for the novel coronavirus, the median age for the infected is 51. But the novel coronavirus is a brand-new virus, and no one has total immunity no matter what their age is.
Both the flu and the novel coronavirus are transmitted (传播) in similar ways, by direct contact with infected patients or small droplets from the nose or mouth when a person with viruses coughs or breathes.
Flu can be spread by an infected person for several days before their symptoms appear. As for the novel coronavirus, spread might be possible before people show symptoms, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
For the novel coronavirus, there is also a risk for aerosol transmission (气溶胶传播). In health facilities, people may catch the virus if they breathed in aerosol, the suspension (悬浮, 暂停) of fine solid or liquid particles in the air, which have been polluted by the virus. The novel coronavirus has also been found in patients’ fecal (排泄物) samples, but fecal-oral transmission does not appear to be a major transmission route.
24. What can we learn about the novel coronavirus?
A. It has seasonal changes. B. It causes less deaths than flu.
C. It may spread among people of all ages. D. It only spreads after people show symptoms.
25. Which of the following is NOT the way the novel coronavirus transmits?
A. Aerosol transmission. B. Contact transmission.
C. Fecal-oral transmission. D. Age transmission.

A. prove flu has less harm to humans than COVID-19 B. raise people’s awareness of protecting their health
C. prove COVID-19 probably won’t cause human deaths D. provide some suggestions to avoid COVID-19 infection
27. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. A new treatment on the novel coronavirus. B. The latest research on COVID-19 and flu.
C. The difference between the novel coronavirus and flu. D. How to identify COVID-19 and flu on symptoms.

A big eating show, or mukbang (吃播) in Korean, is an online audiovisual show in which a vlogger (视频博主) consumes large quantities of food while interacting with the audience. These shows originated in South Korea and have become a worldwide trend.
This eating performance has rapidly spread its influence to some Asian countries such as Japan and China where it became popular. In China, mukbang is called “chibo”, in which mukbangers make their content into short videos and vlogs and upload them onto huge social media platforms like Weibo.
Many hosts of such shows become popular for their ability to eat large amounts of food, but these shows have also received criticism for their waste of food. On Aug 12, CCTV exposed several Chinese hosts who were pretending to eat large amounts of food while on camera, but actually later threw it away.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, about a third of the world’s food 1.3 billion tons is wasted every year. In China alone, as it was once reported that the amount of food wasted in China was enough to feed 200 million people a year.
In June 2020, the United Nations warned that the world is on the road of the worst food crisis in 50 years. To discourage this practice, many video and live-streaming ( 流 播 ) platforms, including Douyin, Kuaishou and Bilibili, have removed videos that show food waste.
People in China have realized the need for safeguarding food security and halting food waste. In Shanxi province, local restaurants have been asked to serve half portions to avoid waste. The Wuhan Catering Association proposed that restaurants adopt the “N-1 mode”. For example, a group of 10 diners should only order enough for nine people at first. More food is only brought to the table if required.

A picture of 17-year-old Zhang Guimei has won great popularity on China’s social media. The young girl with black-rimmed glasses and two short braids ( 辫 子 ) is smiling brightly into the camera. Netizens are deeply touched by the fresh-faced girl in the picture, which is a far cry from Zhang’s now aged and weathered face people are familiar with, as it tells a story of a woman who has devoted her life to promoting education and fighting poverty in rural areas.
Born in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang province in 1957, Zhang traveled to Yunnan at the age of 17 and has been helping girls from poor areas pursue education for over 40 years. Zhang helped establish the country’s first senior high school to offer free education for girls from poor families. The school provides free education to girls who would otherwise have had no chance to study after completing their nine years of compulsory education.
Despite having serious health problems, Zhang Guimei took morning classes with students for 12 years. She has also
racked up 110,000 kilometers visiting her students’ families over the years. Most of her salary and bonuses were spent on students. Since the school opened in 2008, it has seen more than 1,800 students progress to universities and colleges.
“I was built to be a mountain not a creek (小溪), rising to the high peaks with the small valleys at my feet. I was born to be great, not worthless, standing on the shoulders of the giants, the petty (次要的) cowards beneath me.” The motto of Huaping High School for Girls is also a true reflection of Zhang Guimei’s strength and resolve.
On Feb 25, 2021 President Xi Jinping presented an award to Zhang Guimei to mark the nation’s poverty alleviation (减缓) accomplishments and honor exceptional poverty fighters at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
