BI began to discover my enthusiasm for the natural resources that surrounded me during the years I spent with my family enjoying outdoor activities hunting and fishing as a child in Georgia. Gradually and steadily, I found that the forest, trees and streams kept calling me back, which ultimately led me to a career in natural resources as a forester. When I started the profession more than two decades ago, I learned the basic essential benefits trees provide to the environment — they provide clean air, serve as a habitat for wildlife and can even offer shade for a tired forester on a hot sunny day! According to the Georgia Forestry Association (GFA), the forestry industry provides clean water for 57% of the state’s population and decreases the state’s fossil fuel emissions by 22%. Trees are used to make medicine, eco-friendly electronics, furniture and more. What I know now is that there’s so much more that goes into a healthy and energetic forest ecosystem. Each year foresters plant more than 30 million trees. But it takes active sustainable management to ensure social, economic, and environmental benefits, and we should take the time to gain a deeper understanding of one of our greatest renewable resources. This Arbor Day, I urge you to not only join the movement and plant a tree but invite you to reach out to us to learn more about what sustainable forestry means. On a personal note, when my wife and I purchased our first home many years ago, I planted around 100 trees on the property. At the time, it was as much about doing things with the family as it was letting out the inner forester in me. What I didn’t fully realize was the impact and legacy (遗产) those trees left for the next homeowner, the local community and the wildlife that resides in the area.As well as planting trees, do not forget to express your appreciation to the unsung heroes of our environment — your state and local foresters. The work they do is critical to protecting the ecosystems, water resources and air quality and will affect the health and happiness of future communities. 4. What made the author take up the profession as a forester?A. His fondness for nature. B. The benefits trees provide.C. Impacts of the forester’s work. D. His hunting and fishing experience.5. Why does the author mention the figures in paragraph 2?A. To confirm his career choice. B. To emphasize trees’ benefits.C. To show GFA’s great achievements. D. To highlight the harm of fossil fuel.6. Which idea about sustainable forestry does the author most agree with?A. It satisfies our inner need. B. It urges us to plant more trees.C. It offers quality family activities. D. It has a great impact on the whole area. 7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To explain his inner interest in nature.
B. To tell his satisfaction with his career.
C. To make an introduction to GFA in general.
D. To arouse people’s awareness of protecting trees. CIt is a proven fact that plants can respond to sounds around them. They also seem to be doing some “talking” in certain conditions, according to Professor Lilach Hadany and her team, which changes people’s previous opinions about “silent” plants. As the scientists studied the sounds closer, they began to notice patterns. Plants clicked hardly at all when they had enough water while they increased clicks with the soil getting drier. When scientists cut off a part of the trunk, the plants also clicked more but in a different way.Although scientist are not sure how the sounds are produced and whether they are made on purpose, the plants are definitely making noises, and creating many more noises when they’re stressed. An AI system trained to identify the different kinds of clicking sounds was able to tell the difference accurately about 70% of the time. This suggests that one day researchers will be able to decipher when a plant is having trouble, and what trouble it is having, quite helpful to farmers. The new discovery also raises some questions. The important one is: Do plants make sounds to communicate with each other? Previous studies show that plants do communicate in some ways. Plants attacked by insects send chemicals into the air. Soon, the unattacked ones start to make other chemicals that don’t taste good to insects. It’s possible that the ultrasonic (超声波的)sounds could work in a similar way.Another big question is: Is anything listening to the plants? Dr. Hadany points out that mice and moths (蛾), for example, depend on plants, and can hear ultrasonic frequencies. The clicks may tell these animals when a plant isn’t healthy, so they can avoid it.Dr. Hadany tells NFK that she and her team are planning to explore the effect of the sounds on other beings, both animals and plants. They also hope to learn what else might cause the plants to make sounds, and whether AI can help identify those conditions, too. 8. What can we learn about the sounds plants make?A. They are random.B. They are made by design.C. They vary in different situations.D. The clicks happen mainly in summer.9. What does the underlined word “decipher” in Paragraph 3 mean?A. Figure out. B. Hold back. C. Turn up. D. Put down. 10. Why does Hadany use mice and moths as an example ? A. To prove a theory. B. To illustrate one view. C. To answer a question. D. To make a comparison.11. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A. Plants Can “Talk” B. Farmers Will BenefitC. Discoveries Raise Problems D. Sounds’ Effects on Plants DBiotechnology company Colossal Biosciences has added a third species, the dodo bird, to its de-extinction (灭绝动物复活) list besides the woolly mammoth and the thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger in its attempt to genetically recreate extinct animals. Once, dodos were native to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, but human explorers and their introduced animals hunted them to extinction by the end of the 17th century. Now, Colossal claims it can bring back the large flightless bird by editing the genomes (基因组) of its living relatives. In this way, it might engineer an animal that fills an ecological role similar to the dodo’s, according to researchers. To do this, the scientists plan to edit genes from the Nicobar pigeon, the dodo’s closest living relative. They have already successfully identified the extinct bird’s genome from ancient DNA. Next, they hope to remove germ cells from an egg of a pigeon, edit the genes to make them more dodo-like and implant the cells back into a pigeon egg. This technique has worked to breed chickens.Although quite optimistic, Colossal scientists are still developing the genetic processes needed to do so. Other researchers questioned whether the company can accomplish what it has set out to do. “De-extinction is a fairytale science,” claimed Jeremy Austin, an Australian evolutionary biologist, “It’s pretty clear to people like me that de-extinction is more about media attention for the scientists and less about doing serious science.” Even if the scientists overcome the technical challenges and create an animal with genes like a dodo, it might not behave like one but a new species. The alternative bird will need to figure out how to survive without other members of its species to learn from. Besides, Colossal would have to consider where its new creature would live since it previously disappeared from the present conditions.Colossal founder Ben Lamm tells a Vice journalist, “I think this is an opportunity where, given the human aspects of the extinction of the dodo, man could not only bring the dodo back, but also fix what was done to parts of the ecosystem to reintroduce them. We will spare no effort.” Colossal has raised $225 million since it launched in 2021. 12. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?A. The reason for the project. B. The method of the project. C. The achievement of the project. D. The problems with the project. 13. What can we infer from Jeremy Austin’s words? A. He is indifferent to the project.B. The new bird is completely different.C. The project has more benefits than problems. D. The project tries to draw attention in the first place. 14. Why wouldn’t the gene-edited birds act in a normal way?A. Climate is not suitable. B. Scientists’ techniques are outdated. C. They lack learning resources. D. The gene has been changed largely. 15. Where is this passage most likely from?A. A documentary. B. A news report. C. An advertisement. D. A book review. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Uncertainty happens and may even dominates when we are making decisions, which may cause confusion about what is going on and how to react. But adults who expect to make decisions adapt after several tactical decision (战术决策) games. 16 And they develop strategies for coping with uncertainty. Here are the points behind these games. 17 We typically think that sensemaking comes first, and you act only then. But sometimes, you can take measures that are designed to cause the situation to clarify. Do something that forces the situation to respond, and we can gain a better understanding of it.Avoid falling into the information-gathering trap. Most people naturally seek to reduce uncertainty by collecting more data, and some data can be helpful. Too often, they collect data rather than trying to sort out the already existing data. And too often, they collect data they don’t actually need. Even the helpful data may work originally. 18 Develop flexible plans that will work in various situations. Develop plans that include a hedge (防范措施) against uncertainty. 19 They can help deal with unexpected events, whether crises or opportunities. In general, the greater the uncertainty, the fewer resources you should commit initially and the more you should keep in reserve.Be aware that you are changing in mindset. You are on your way to shifting your mindset from dreading uncertainty to a mindset of expecting it. 20 In this respect, you may even use it to your advantage. A. Try to learn as much as possible.B. Take action to weaken uncertainty. C. They get used to what is still uncertain. D. Go all out to deal with the unexpected things.E. The value of them decreases as people collect. F. You should hold some resources in your own hands. G. You can actually enjoy the pleasure of managing it successfully. 第二部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)第一节 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 In my childhood, my parents always said I could be anything I wanted to be and I believed them. Unfortunately, to avoid a rabbit that came out of nowhere, the husband turned the steering wheel suddenly and their car slid off the icy and slippery road, hopelessly stuck in a ditch (沟渠). They were left in the middle of nowhere, with no one around to give any help.A moment later, a car pulled up behind them, and a man stepped out. “Hi, guys. Need any help? My name is John, I know people easily get in trouble in such weather and I have been patrolling (巡逻) the area just in case,” he said.“Oh, thank you so much! Look at the car...,” The couple were relieved and grateful for his offer. Together, the three of them attempted to drag the car from the ditch, but it was too heavy. John then contacted his friend, Tom, and told him what had happened. Tom soon arrived with his truck and successfully drew the car out of the ditch. The couple expressed their gratitude to John and Tom for their help with money, but they refused, saying, “We just feel happy to be of help and if you will, please pay it forward by assisting someone else in need.” The couple drove back home safely, deeply moved by the selflessness of the strangers and determined to do the same when they had a chance. Several weeks later, the couple went to a local diner for breakfast. After ordering their meal and taking a seat near the window, they noticed an elderly woman sitting on her own at a table in the corner, looking depressed and lonely. Remembering the selfless help from the strangers before, they decided to have a conversation with her. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答
