Over half of the world’s agricultural soils are already degraded, and the remaining soil will only take us another 40 to 50 years. Yet despite the threat, soil health receives less attention. That’s why visionary Sadhguru set off on a 100-day, 30,000-kilometer motorcycle journey.
Sadhguru went on his motorcycle journey from London, on March 20, but his journey really began about 20 years ago in India, revealed Jankowski, who has been volunteering with Sadhguru’s Isha Foundation since 2004 and the Conscious Planet/Save Soil movement since August 2021.
Sadhguru decided to travel from the UK to India by motorcycle. The route went through Europe and the Middle East to the United Nations Convention. He is currently in India, and will conclude the trip at its southern tip in Coimbatore on June 21.
Aubuchon, who has been volunteering at the Isha Foundation for the past decade and accompanied Sadhguru as a member of the audio-visual team, revealed the truth about the journey. Sadhguru went through a variety of road conditions, from steep (陡峭的), cobblestone streets in Rome to dusty, uneven two-lane roads in Romania and Georgia. He drove through winds strong enough that truck drivers had to be put on notice, snow in Switzerland, and heavy rainfall coming into Rome that flooded the roadways.
People inspired by the movement have taken the initiative to raise their voices in different ways. Volunteers in Canada have got to Niagara Falls, the CN Tower and the Montreal Olympic Stadium lit up with the green-and-blue Save Soil colors, and one UK schoolboy wrote a letter about the issue to Prime Minister and received a response.
This encouragement has made the movement very hopeful in a time of anxiety over what we as individuals can do. That hopeful messaging was in evidence when Sadhguru met with school children planting trees outside of Baku, Azerbaijan. This is an area that is currently experiencing desertification, but was once very green. “We can change it for the better,” said Sadhguru. “This is something we should be giving to our children and their children.”
24. Why did Sadhguru make his motorcycle journey?
A. To build up his body.
B. To practice his cycling skills.
C. To draw attention to soil health.
D. To go sightseeing around the world.
25. What is the function of paragraph 4?
A. To publicize Sadhguru’s motorcycle journey.
B. To tell us the difficulties Sadhguru encountered.
C. To explain the work done by Sadhguru’s team members.
D. To introduce the make-up of Sadhguru’s volunteer team.
26. What is people’s attitude to the movement?
A. Indifferent. B. Critical. C. Hesitant. D. Favourable.
27. What can we infer about the future of the area of Baku?
A. It can return to a green place.
B. Wood will be sufficient for use.
C. Its desertification can’t be any worse.
D. Children there will live a carefree life.
C
Scientists studying a giant collection of plastic garbage floating in the middle of the open ocean have found some unexpected occupants: dozens of marine (海洋的) species that usually stick close to the coast. The findings help overturn the long-held idea that the open ocean is a barrier that most coastal species could never break.
Haram, a marine ecologist, and her colleagues, made this discovery after examining 105 things collected from an area known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Even though biologists knew that coastal species can occasionally travel on ships or floating things, scientists had long thought that coastal species couldn’t live long-term out at sea or establish new communities there. That’s because differences in temperature, salinity (盐度), and the available nutrients found in the watery environments all seemed like potential deal-breakers.
But the March 2011 tsunami in Japan forced marine biologists to rethink their old assumptions. Identifiable waste from Japan started turning up in places like Hawaii years later, carrying coastal species that had somehow managed to survive.
So Haram and her colleagues decided to sample some of the garbage out in the Pacific. Examining the garbage back in the lab, researchers found hundreds of marine species—and 80% of them were coastal. The kinds of small creatures examined in this study often serve as food for larger species, possibly implying all kinds of animals higher up the food chain like turtles, fish, and marine mammals (哺乳动物).
“Coastal species are traveling all the time,” says Rech, a marine biologist. “That could increase the risk of introduced species finding new places to take hold and become invasive (侵略性的).”
Rech and her colleagues didn’t see such a diverse range of coastal life when they studied dozens of things from the South Pacific, but she says it may be that this is a more severe, nutrient-poor environment.
On the other hand, says Rech, this study makes her wonder whether the South Pacific really has small numbers of coastal species out there.
28. What is the traditional thought about coastal species?
A. They travel on ships or floating things.
B. They break the barrier to the open ocean.
C. They can hardly survive at sea for long.
D. They are intolerant of temperature changes.
29. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The purpose of the research.
B. The process of the research.
C. The significance of the research.
D. The application of the research.
30. What will probably be talked about following the last paragraph?
A. Long journey to the South Pacific.
B. Careful study of costal life in the open sea.
C. Environmental protection of the South Pacific.
D. In-depth research into things from the South Pacific.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Floating ocean garbage is also a treasure
B. Coastal species are traveling all the time
C. Floating ocean garbage is home to coastal species
D. Coastal species possess strong continued vitality
D
Birds and other animals can often fly, walk or swim to follow their preferred environment, while plants are quite literally rooted to the ground. They require outside forces to help them grow in new areas: half of all plant species rely on animals to place their seeds elsewhere, such as by eating fruits and then dropping the seeds they contain.
Unfortunately, deforestation, poaching (偷猎) and other human pressures are causing population declines in some crucial seed-spreading species. Such losses have already blunted plants’ ability to keep pace with a rapidly changing climate by a shocking 60 percent.
For decades scientists have been tracking which birds and other animals eat fruits and the seeds they contain, how far those seeds are transported and whether they grow wherever they are dropped. These are what ecologists call mutualistic interactions (互利互惠).
Fricke, an ecologist, and his co-authors took data from thousands of studies that have been conducted around the world over several decades and fed them into a machine-learning model. The researchers taught the model which animals and plants had mutualistic interactions.
They additionally looked at what would happen if extinctions were to occur among endangered birds and mammals. The areas that would see the greatest impact to the spread of seeds from such losses were primarily in Southeast Asia and Madagascar. “It clearly shows, as we’re losing mammals, we’re often losing the best seed spreaders,” says Fricke. Fricke says he and his colleagues’ estimates are likely conservative because they did not consider additional barriers to the spread of seeds, such as roads and other human infrastructure that can block animals’ movements.
Overall, Fricke says, the new study provides a realistic sense of what kind of climate change plants are able to deal with. It shows humans are now forcing plants to move greater distances to maintain comfortable climate conditions—while at the same time slowing them down with our impacts on the animals they rely on to carry their seeds.
32. What can we know about plant species?
A. They hardly escape the fate of being eaten.
B. They prefer a fixed familiar environment.
C. They call for external forces to settle in new areas.
D. They depend on animals to drop the seeds elsewhere.
33. What does the underlined word “blunted” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Weakened. B. Enhanced.
C. Showed. D. Developed.
34. What can we learn from paragraph 5?
A. Mammals are independent of plants.
B. Mammals are critical to seed distribution.
C. Loss of plant species is down to road conditions.
D. Birds in Southeast Asia and Madagascar go extinct.
35. What is the most effective way to handle the situation?
A. Building fewer new roads.
B. Transplanting more young plants.
C. Ceasing to kill birds and animals.
D. Being cautious of human activities.

Green building is a design process that grows out of a connection with the natural landscape. It is a set of informed decisions that consider the site and materials to reduce the cost, maintenance, and energy usage of the home. Green homes are healthier, safer, more comfortable, and cost less to operate. 36 Here are several green building ideas.
Reduce water needs. Rainwater catching systems use tools to catch and store water that falls on roofs. Front loading washing machines use less energy and water. Some dishwashers use less water and have no-heat drying. 37 Low flow toilets and showerheads reduce water usage.
Use renewable or recycled materials. Consider decks made of waste wood and plastic, such as Trex or other brands, which does not contain formaldehyde (甲醛). 38 Plan for a place to recycle household trash, such as a storage container in the kitchen, and holding container in the garage.
39 Trees, vegetation and bird habitats on the site should be protected during the construction. Native trees, grasses and rock outcroppings can be made a part of your building and landscaping design. Reduce the impact on the building site as much as possible.
Green building is an approach to design and construction that respects the environment and conserves resources. 40 Green building techniques create a more cost-effective, enjoyable, and sustainable home to live in.
A. Safeguard Your Site.
B. It is available to all homeowners.
C. Hard surface floors are very durable.
D. Construction waste is hard to deal with.
E. Use materials with recycled content when possible.
F. Check water and energy usage before buying appliances.
G. They connect people to the land and community around them.

Like many teens today, I was a confused and angry sixteen-year-old with low self-esteem (自尊). Not only was I extremely overweight, but my grades began to fall. I began drinking, hanging out with the wrong crowd and eventually running away from home.
The last time I ran away, my mom and dad couldn’t find me for weeks. I soon found out that the freedom for which I had longed was full of empty promises. Once again, I found my way home to the family that welcomed me back with open arms. This time, however, their unconditional love set much-needed boundaries and I had to return to school.
The first day back was as painful as I had anticipated. I heard all the names my peers called me. I probably would have run away again if it had not been for a familiar voice from the end of the hall. Mrs. Alma Sitton, who let us fondly call her “Miss Alma”, had been one teacher who had always treated me with respect and dignity. However, she was tough on all of us. We all knew that if we missed one day of Miss Alma’s class, she had neat loads of make-up work ready to distribute.
Ignoring the taunts (嘲笑) of my classmates, I dutifully walked down the hall as Miss Alma called to me. As expected, she led me into her warm familiar classroom, near the table of missed assignments. But what came next was totally unexpected. She turned toward me, put her hands on my shoulders, and then put her arms around me! As she hugged me, softly in my ear Miss Alma whispered, “Debbie, you should have great plans for your life and I’m here for you.” That ten-second gift of hope and encouragement has lasted thirty years. I don’t remember the loads of missed assignments, but it was at that point that Miss Alma became my hero.
Twenty years later, it may have been a surprise to my entire hometown that I lost one hundred pounds, married and taught in St. Louis. I was even selected as teacher of the year and I have traveled throughout the United States as a member of the National Teachers Hall of Fame, speaking to thousands of schools and churches.
Miss Alma, retired, was serving at her church social-fish and loaves of bread!
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I decided to return to my hometown and thank Miss Alma.
Without hesitation, I accepted her invitation to her church.

第二节 (满分25分)
One possible version:
I decided to return to my hometown and thank Miss Alma. As I approached her, once again I was enveloped in that warm, encouraging hug. “Oh, Debbie! Look at you! You’ve lost a hundred pounds! And I heard you have become a teacher of the year. I am so proud of you.” I wanted to tell her what an inspiration she had been. But I was too choked up to say much of anything at the time. Before my departure, she asked me to make a speech where she worked the next day.
Without hesitation, I accepted her invitation to her church. It was the highlight of all speaking engagements. I publicly thanked her for being such a role model, such an encourager and the very reason I became a teacher. “Kids don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” I said to everyone present, tears welling up in my eyes. Before ending my speech, I extended my thanks to her again and convinced her that I had passed on that hug and encouragement to many other “Debbies”.
such as massage, facials and honey rubs.
