Tom Brown’s orchard (果园), known as Heritage Apples, is home to 700 varieties of apples. They are among the 1,200 endangered varieties that Brown has recovered from six southern states. Many of these have not been sold for a century or so. In fact, he cloned some of the apples from the last remaining trees of their kinds.
Before Brown discovered lost apples, he was a chemical engineer who, along with his wife, Merrikay Brown, enjoyed visiting farmers’ markets. It was at one, in 1999, that he became fascinated by baskets full of heritage apples with unfamiliar names such as Kane, Lawver, Rusty Coat, and Rambo. These apples had shapes, colors, and tastes like no apples Brown had ever seen before. The seller Maurice Marshall told him other lost apples might still be found in the area. Interested, Brown went in search of them.
Brown advertised in area newspapers seeking information about old apple trees. The response was exciting, but few brought concrete information. Actually, most of the leads about the whereabouts of these old trees come from people in their 70s, 80s, and 90s, many of whom he met at local businesses and at festivals where he exhibited heritage apples. When Brown finds a tree, he cuts a branch off and returns during fruiting season to identify them. He compares leaves and apples to historical seed catalogs, and uses photos to correspond with experts for further confirmation.
In 1905, there were more than 7,000 apple varieties in the United States. Then people moved to urban areas and grew less of their own food while large agribusinesses preferred selling fewer varieties, ones that were familiar and shipped easily. Saving the long-forgotten fruits is a race against time. Now, the 79-year-old has to drive over 30,000 miles a year and devotes around three days a week to apple-hunting. He hopes to recover another 100 varieties or more in his lifetime.
4. What do we learn about the apples in Brown’s orchard?
A. They are rare species. B. They are mostly clones.
C. They sell well in the market. D. They adapt to different climates.
5. What did Brown decide to do after talking with Marshall?
A. Help him promote fruits. B. Recover the lost apples.
C. Learn to plant fruit trees from him. D. Taste the apples mentioned by him.
6. How did Brown locate most of the lost varieties?
A. By referring to documents. B. By putting advertisements.
C. By consulting the elderly. D. By communicating with experts.
7. What does the author intend to tell us about Brown?
A. His colorful retirement life.
B. His work in protecting fruit trees.
C. His love for popularizing gardening.
D. His contributions to saving lost apple species.
A 5. B 6. C 7. D

According to statistics, 358bee species live in the Netherlands, but more than half of them are part of the Dutch red list — a catalog listing endangered species. To support the insects, the city of Utrecht Council, together with advertising agency Clear Channel, has transformed 316 bus stops across the city into “bee bus stops”. They are like ordinary bus shelters, but small gardens have been added to the roofs. The gardens are filled with grass and wildflowers chosen to attract bees.
The city authorities put the project out to tender (投标). In the tender, they outlined the requirements and encouraged applicants to develop a nature-inclusive design that offers ecological benefits to the city. Finally, they signed an agreement with Clear Channel, who won the tender and setup 316 bus shelters. The project didn’t cost the city government anything. The operators are responsible for the upkeep of the stops citywide, using income from advertising.
The bus shelters have brought about great changes in the city. Green roofs catch fine dust, store rainwater and provide cooling in the heat. They also ensure biodiversity in the city. There are also 96 bus stops fitted out with LED lighting and bamboo benches. The base plate is also made from recycled concrete. The advantages of the bus stops have not gone unnoticed by the media. But what particularly has caught the media’s attention is that these eco-friendly shelters make people happy and enthusiastic, and encourage them to do something for nature.
This unique Dutch city even has a program for residents who can transform their own roofs into green roofs for bees. Residents interested in this can apply for government allowances. Click here for more information and details.
8. Why did the Utrecht Council add green roofs to its bus shelters?
A. To beautify the urban space. B. To promote public transport.
C. To offer comfort to travellers. D. To stop the bee population decline.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How the costs were shared. B. How the project was operated.
C. What was in eluded in the tender. D. Why the agreement was reached.
10. What impresses the media most about the bus shelters?
A. The variety of the chosen plants.
B. Their role in reducing air pollution.
C. The use of energy-saving LED lights.
D. Their effect on people’s environmental awareness.
11. Who is the text mainly intended for?
A. Local tourists. B. News reporters.
C. Utrecht citizens. D. Project managers.
D 9. B 10. D 11. C

Some experts have been concerned lately about robots leaving humans behind, taking our jobs and possibly a lot more, as in sci-fi films. Christ of Koch, a famous neuroscientist (神经学家), has suggested a novel method. To keep up with the machines, we should increase our brainpower with brain implants (植人物).
Koch notes that brain implants are already helping the paralyzed or people unable to move control computers and robots, and they are being explored for the treatment of mental disorders. Future implants could help us download huge amounts of information instantly, he says, so we can learn “novel skills and facts without even trying”. “Another exciting aspect,” Koch says, “is combining two or more brains into a single conscious mind by direct neuron-to-neuron links.” Koch calls for a “crash program” in brain technologies to make us smarter.
But Koch ignores the obvious facts that bad persons can hack (侵入) into our smartphones and laptops. What if hackers could attack our brains? They may be able to spy on, change or control the memories of people implanted with brain devices. What’s more, we are nowhere close to being able to strengthen the brain in the manner that Koch imagines. Scientists have been experimenting with neuro-technologies for mental illness for more than half a century, and they have little to show for it.
Koch genuinely feared that science, far from addressing our problems, might exacerbate them. The use of robots in the workshop, for example, could cause mass unemployment. Do we just count the immediate job losses—without measuring any other potential positive effect on the economy? Despite losing some jobs to robots in the short term, the increase in productivity will help our overall economy grow faster, which, in turn, will create more, higher quality jobs than we had before.
The future is not as scary as we think. Perhaps we’ve got serious problems on our hands, and we have a lot of work to do to settle them. Brain implants are not the answer.
12. What leads to Koch’s optimism about future brain implants?
A. The great advance in AI research.
B. Their application in medical fields.
C. The breakthrough in surgical techniques.
D. Their easy adaptation to the human body.
13. How does the author feel about Koch’s “crash program” in brain technologies?
A. Disapproving. B. Unconcerned. C. Favorable. D. Excited.
14. What does the underlined word “exacerbate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Avoid. B. Worsen. C. Reduce. D. Answer.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A Are Brain Implants at Risk of Hacker Attack?
B. Will Robots Take the Place of Humans in Future?
C. Will Brain Implants Let the Disabled Live Normally?
D. Do We Need Brain Implants to Keep Up with Robots?
B 13. A 14. B 15. D
根据文章第二段“Koch notes that brain implants are already helping the paralyzed or people unable to move control computers and robots, and they are being explored for the treatment of mental disorders. Future implants could help us download huge amounts of information instantly, he says, so we can learn “novel skills and facts without even trying”.(科赫指出,大脑植入物已经在帮助瘫痪或无法移动的人控制电脑和机器人,并且正在探索用于治疗精神障碍。他说,未来的植入物可以帮助我们立即下载大量信息,这样我们就可以“毫不费力地学习新的技能和事实”)”可知,科赫认为目前大脑植入物已经在帮助瘫痪或无法移动的人控制电脑和机器人,并且正在探索用于治疗精神障碍。所以他对于未来的大脑植入物能够帮助我们毫不费力地学习新技能和事实抱有乐观的态度。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“But Koch ignores the obvious facts that bad persons can hack(侵入) into our smartphones and laptops. What if hackers could attack our brains? They may be able to spy on, change or control the memories of people implanted with brain devices. What’s more, we are nowhere close to being able to strengthen the brain in the manner that Koch imagines.(但科赫忽略了一个显而易见的事实:坏人可以侵入我们的智能手机和笔记本电脑。如果黑客可以攻击我们的大脑呢?他们或许能够监视、改变或控制植入大脑设备的人的记忆。更重要的是,我们离能够以科赫想象的方式增强大脑还差得很远)”可知,作者对于科赫的想法是不赞同的。故选A。
根据文章第一段“Christ of Koch, a famous neuroscientist(神经学家), has suggested a novel method. To keep up with the machines, we should increase our brainpower with brain implants(植人物).(著名的神经学家克里斯特·科赫提出了一种新方法。为了跟上机器的步伐,我们应该通过植入大脑来提高我们的智力)”、第二段“Koch notes that brain implants are already helping the paralyzed or people unable to move control computers and robots, and they are being explored for the treatment of mental disorders.(科赫指出,大脑植入物已经在帮助瘫痪或无法移动的人控制电脑和机器人,并且正在探索用于治疗精神障碍)”、第三段“But Koch ignores the obvious facts that bad persons can hack(侵入) into our smartphones and laptops.(但科赫忽略了一个显而易见的事实:坏人可以侵入我们的智能手机和笔记本电脑)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讨论了我们是否需要大脑植入物来跟上机器人。所以“Do We Need Brain Implants to Keep Up with Robots?( 我们需要大脑植入物来跟上机器人吗?)”

根据空前“Peer pressure is the influence a person feels from others in his peer group. The person may be encouraged to change his behavior, attitudes, and even values to match his peers.(同龄压力是一个人从他的同龄群体中感受到的影响。这个人可能会被鼓励改变他的行为、态度,甚至价值观,以适应他的同龄人。)”可知,上文讲述的是同龄压力是一个人从同领人那里感受到的影响。选项B“People tend to be under peer pressure (人们容易承受同龄压力)”是上文内容的延续,同时下文“because of a desire to be recognized as well as for a fear of not belonging.(因为渴望被认可,也因为害怕没有归属感。)”
When dealing with peer pressure, start by choosing friends who are like-minded and be have positively. Surround yourself with friends who won’t pressure you to do things.(选择积极的朋友。在处理同龄压力时,首先选择志同道合的朋友。和不会给你压力的朋友在一起。)”可知,上文主要建议我们选择志同道合的朋友。选项G“They should accept you for who you are without wanting to change you(他们应该接受真实的你,而不是想要改变你)”与上文内容一致,指的都是选择志同道合的朋友,而不是不能接受真实的你的朋友。故选G。
根据空前内容“Say no to avoid peer pressure. For example, if a few kids in school try to get you to cut class with them, just say no to show that you’re not willing to compromise. This will save you the trouble of getting pressured again in the future.(说“不”以避免同龄压力。例如,如果学校里有几个孩子想让你和他们一起逃课,你就说不,以表明你不愿意妥协。这将省去你在未来再次受到压力的麻烦。)”可以推断,上文主要建议我们要学会拒绝,并且举例说明如果有人让我们做不好的事情,我们要学会拒绝。只有这样,我们才能避免再次受到压力。选项E“Otherwise, you are likely to face serious consequences(否则,你可能会面临严重的后果)”是上文内容的延续,指的是如果我们不会拒绝,就会面临严重的后果。故选E。
根据空前内容“Get advice from an adult. If you face peer pressure that’s hard to handle, get advice from an adult you trust. Talk to a parent or a teacher.(听取成年人的建议。如果你面临难以应对的同龄压力,向你信任的成年人寻求建议。和父母或老师谈谈。)”可知,上文建议我们要听取成年人的建议。而下文“Plus, they can help you prepare for the next time you face peer pressure.(另外,他们可以帮助你为下一次面对同龄压力做好准备。)” A“They can help you feel much better(他们能帮助你感觉好很多)”指的正是向所信任的成年人寻求建议的好处。 故选A。
根据下文“A typical example would be that a student feels pressured by his peers to perform well on tests. Positive peer pressure is more likely to set people up for success.(一个典型的例子是,一个学生感到同龄人的压力,这让他在考试中表现出色。积极的同龄压力更有可能使人们走向成功。)”可知,下文讲述的是同龄压力带来的好处。选项C“Peer pressure is not always a bad thing(同龄压力并不总是坏事)”符合下文内容,指的都是同龄压力也会带来好处。故选C。
