According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, researchers have found that awe-inspiring experiences___41___ our prosocial (亲社会的) behaviors, making us more ___42___ and more humble. Awe-inspiring experiences make us more empathetic, allowing us to___43___ another person’s emotional expressions better and respond with concern.___44___ they make us more willing to engage with trust and ___45___ others.
What kind of experiences can be called“awe-inspiring”? The___46___ mentioned by the journal include scuba diving (潜水), witnessing the birth of a child, watching a meteor (流星) shower, and visiting a forest. Awe is an emotional response to something very large, says the article, and it challenges and expands our way of seeing the world.
___48___ the feeling of awe is felt___49___ by different individuals, and for different reasons. The deep blue ocean might inspire different feelings in a poet than in a fisherman, ___50___. The study says an awe-inspiring experience is a moment so overwhelming (无法抗拒的) that time seems to stand still.
When you look at or experience something___52___, like looking at a waterfall or a sky filled with stars, your mind is fixed on the present moment. Time seems to___53___, the Stanford researchers concluded, making you feel like you have more of it to spare. This makes you feel more patient, less materialistic, and more willing to help others.
Other researchers believe awe is powerful because it takes us out of our own heads. “Awe makes our individual identity less___54___ and gets us to think about things bigger than ourselves,” Paul Piff, assistant professor of psychology at the University of California, told The Wall Street Journal. Piff has found that many___55___ things in life inspire awe – listening to a piece of music you haven’t heard before, going on a nature hike, or going to a pop concert. All you need to do is start noticing and marveling (对……惊叹) at the world around you.

    Section B
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
    (A)
Taking a job mainly because the pay is appealing can increase the likelihood that the job will not work for you in the long run. Moreover, a potential employer will most likely sense it if you are not passionate about your role.
“During a recent conversation with a candidate, it became clear that his primary motivation was a pay raise,” said Amy Perrone, vice president Shelli Herman & Associates. “It was a big red flag.”
Perrone said a smart job seeker is motivated by opportunity and fit, as money can lose its appeal very quickly. Here are five instances in which taking a pay cut could actually be to your advantage.
l You want a career change
You might want to switch to a new field in which you hold little experience. In this case, a lower salary will be appropriate until you have acquired a certain skill level. If your new job is in a growing field such as hospitality or health care, your salary could increase rapidly. A change of career might improve your quality of life, which can be worth more than a bigger paycheck.
l You make a lateral move
A lateral move that does not involve a higher salary immediately can provide one in the near future. Assuming different responsibilities can open up opportunities. A wise lateral move can expose you to someone from whom you can learn, and the value of that knowledge might more than compensate for a temporary drop in pay.
l You’re not progressing in your current job
A job that offers no growth is frustrating and can be financially disastrous. You are likely to become unproductive, and your employer might want to hire someone with fewer skills at a lower cost. A move to a larger company with greater scope and resources could provide you with a brighter financial future despite a temporary cut in pay.
    l __________
This is obvious, but it is surprising how many people suffer through miserable jobs not realizing the damage they do to their health. According to a survey by The Conference Board, over 50 percent of U.S. workers were dissatisfied with their jobs. Having to do a job that you dislike is stressful. Stress can affect your ability to sleep, which in turn can further stress your immune system and contribute to ill health. If you would be much happier and less stressed with a job that can provide a more flexible schedule, a salary cut that brings improved health could improve your quality of life overall.
l You relocate for your spouse(配偶)’s career
A relocation because of a spouse’s career can be an opportunity for the other spouse to pursue a career change. If you must leave a good-paying job, consider what you would like to do instead and how you can achieve it.
Many people consider a pay cut to be a backward step in their careers, but the opposite is often the case. Consider how happy you are in your current job and whether you are progressing professionally. It could be time for a change if your health is suffering, you are questioning the management capabilities of your employer or you can see a path to something more appealing. Think through your work opportunities and your finances carefully before making your move.
    41. The underlined phrase “red flag” most probably means _____.
    A. A symbol of success. B. A symbol of giving up.
    C. A sign of a potential problem. D. A sign of a promising talent.
    42. Which heading is the most appropriate for paragraph seven?
    A. Your health is suffering.
    B. You are questioning your employer’s management capabilities.
    C. You can see a path to something more appealing.
    D. You are not dissatisfied with your current job.
    43. What is the passage mainly about?
    A. Why can’t we get promoted?
    B. Why should we consider a pay cut?
C .How can we change our career?
    D. How can we improve the quality of life?

    (B)
    Social interaction?
DO you find it hard to go a day without updating your micro blog? Do you feel out of the loop if you are not chatting on QQ?
For many teenagers around the world, social media has become a big part of their lives. They constantly tell us that communication has never been easier and that you can connect to friends with the click of a button. But is this a good thing?
A recent survey done by Common Sense Media, a non-profit organization in the US, has found that as many as 79 percent of 13- to 17-year-old teenagers feel the need to disconnect from social media sometimes. Surprisingly 36 percent said they wish they could go back to a time before social media existed. Why do they feel this way?
Yahoo reported that scientists have found that social networking sites are a way in which youngsters isolate (孤立) themselves; they tend to use the Internet to avoid human contact and escape from real problems. And the study by Common Sense Media has confirmed (确认) this. According to the organization, many teenagers believe that using social media takes away the time they spend face-to-face with friends. One participant in the study said: “Technology and social networking have absorbed (影响) some of my close friendships, and they’ve dwindled. I miss the times where we could just go hang out and laugh.”
The organization also reports that more than a third of US teenagers want to unplug (关机) in order to avoid overexposure to negative information. The Washington Post reports that 90 percent of teenagers in the country say they have witnessed their peers being bullied (欺负) on social networking sites. According to the newspaper, some teenagers present their “alter ego (个性的另一面)” on social media, engaging in (参与) conversations with more bravado (逞强) and taking more risks than they do in person.
And some teenagers want to disconnect to enjoy being alone. One teenager said they disliked social media because sometimes being alone is important – “It’s nice to just sit back and relax with no possible way to communicate with anyone in any way.”
    59. What did the recent survey done by Common Sense Media find out about the US teenagers?
    A. Over 30 percent of the teens would rather have no social media around them.
    B. 90 percent of the teens said their peers were once bullied on social networking sites.
    C. More than a third of the teens believe their use of social media affects how they feel about themselves.
    D. About three-fourths of the teens wished they could disconnect themselves from the Internet completely.
    60. According to the article, many teenagers want to unplug ______.
    a. to protect their privacy b. to have more alone time
    c. to spend more time with their friends d. to escape from their real problems
    e. to reduce their exposure to negative information
    A. a, b, c, B. a, c, d C. b, c, e D. b, d, e
    61. The underlined word “dwindled” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to have______.
    A. been in danger B. become weaker C. been improved D. remained firm
    62. What can we infer from the fifth paragraph?
    A. Some teenagers play a negative role in their real daily life.
    B. Some teenagers admitted having bullied others on social networking sites.
    C. Some teenagers tend to present a different personality on social networking sites.
    D. Some teenagers agree that the advantages of social media outweigh their disadvantages.

    (C)
BEIJING - Astronomers have refuted against rumors that the destructive earthquake and the following tsunami in Japan were closely related to or even caused by the "supermoon" that will appear in the sky on Saturday.
The word "supermoon" was introduced in a report by the British newspaper Daily Mail on March 9, which said amateur scientists were warning that such an astronomical phenomenon could disturb the Earth's climate patterns and may even cause earthquakes and volcanic activity. The moon will be 356,577 kilometers from the Earth on Saturday, the closest in 19 years, and the closest point in its oval orbit coincides with a full moon, the report said.
However, Saturday's moon is not actually the closest to Earth in 19 years, Tang Haiming, an astronomer with Shanghai Astronomical Observatory under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told Xinhua News Agency. A shorter distance of 356,566 km was seen in December 2008.
Yet some people suggest that previous supermoons have occurred before extreme weather events. In 1974 the phenomenon was followed by Cyclone Tracy in Darwin, Australia, and in 2005 it occurred shortly before a deadly tsunami in Indonesia. Coincidentally, two fresh disasters happened in Asia right before Saturday's supermoon. The public's concern about their connection with the moon boomed after Japan's destructive earthquake and tsunami and an earthquake in Southwest China's Yunnan province that killed 25 people on March 10.
But astronomers are trying to reassure people that such rumors are merely unreasonable.
“A supermoon could cause high tides but has no direct relation with natural disasters such as earthquakes,” Liu Jie, a researcher with the China Earthquake Network Center, told China Daily on Tuesday. “We can't find any necessary connection between previous supermoons and earthquakes. And the quake in Japan occurred because the Earth's inner energy had accumulated to some extent, and it's not related to the moon. ” he said.
James Garvin, chief scientist at the Goddard Space Flight Center under NASA, said in an article on NASA's website that “the effects on Earth from a supermoon are minor.” “The combination of the moon being at its closest to Earth in its orbit, and being in its 'full moon' configuration (relative to the Earth and sun), should not affect the inner energy balance of the Earth, since there are lunar tides every day. ”
Zhu Jin, curator of the Beijing Planetarium, said “the moon moves around the earth in a certain path, so each orbit has a perigee -- its closest approach, and an apogee -- its furthest distance.” “A lunar perigee occurs once a month and there are very small differences in distances between perigees,” he said. “Those tiny differences are far from enough to cause earthquakes or eruption of a volcano,” he added.
    63. How many disasters are mentioned in the article?
    A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
    64. What’s the real reason for the quake in Japan?
    A. Because supermoon disturbed the Earth's climate patterns.
    B. Because the Earth's inner energy had accumulated to some extent.
    C. Because the combination of the moon being at its closest to Earth in its orbit, and being in its “full moon” configuration affected the inner energy balance of the Earth.
    D. Because God punished us for our serious pollution.
    65. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
    A. When the moon is 356,577 kilometers from the Earth, it is the closest in 19 years.
    B. A supermoon has no direct relation with high tides.
    C. A lunar perigee occurs once a month and they are always the same in distance.
    D. The supermoon should not affect the internal energy balance of the Earth.
    66. What would be the best title for the passage?
    A. “Supermoon” and earthquake
    B. The earthquake in Japan
    C. Explanation for worries over “supermoon”
    D. A rumor about “supermoon”
    Section C
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences listed below. Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.
A I could lower my blood cholesterol level simply by changing what I ate.
B I was three years old at that time.
C There is not enough oxygen in the blood.
D It was a heart attack just waiting to happen
E The trial was designed to test the effect of lowering blood cholesterol on the risk of heart disease.
F The death rate for the test was only 1 in 100, I was assured.
Like millions of other Americans, I come from a family with a history of heart disease. My father had his first three heart attacks when he was only thirty-one. __67__. I grew up with heart disease. It was there, but I didn’t take it seriously.
When I was thirty-one, my blood cholesterol (胆固醇) level was measured for the first time. It was 311 mg/dl, the doctor told me -- an extremely high level that put me at a very high risk of heart disease, especially with my family history. He sent me to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to be screened for participation in a clinical trial. __68__.
At NIH, physicians explained the degree of risk associated with my blood cholesterol level and the nature of the experiment. This test involves putting a tube through a leg artery(动脉) up to the heart.__69__. Learning about the risks of the experiment as well as the risk associated with my raised blood cholesterol level scared the life out of me. Although I was excluded from participating in the study, the experience may well have saved my life.
For the first time, I began to realize the seriousness of high blood cholesterol. __70__. But equally important, I got a taste of what it is like to be a patient, to have tests done on me and to think of myself as sick. This was hard to take.
This experience taught me a lifesaving lesson. Although I felt fit and strong, I was actually at high risk for heart disease because of my high blood cholesterol level. And with my family history, it could not be ignored. Therefore, I should try to lower my blood cholesterol level.
    Section D Summary
Directions: Summarize the following passage with no more than 60 words.
MCDONALD’S restaurants stand among American capitalism’s greatest success stories. Starting out with just one burger stall in 1948, the fast-food chain’s emphasis on quick service and a standardized menu has helped it to grow to more than 35,000 outlets across the world. It has been profitable: after a unstable period in the early 2000s, the firm’s share price went from $12 in 2003 to more than $100 at the end of 2011. But now McDonald’s has lost its advantage. Global sales have been declining since at least last July. When the company announces its annual results on January 23rd, analysts think it will reveal its first full-year fall in profit since 2002. What’s gone wrong?
Some of McDonald’s problems some from operational mistakes across the world. Particularly, its business in Asia—where it makes nearly a quarter of its global profits—has been hit by several health scares. Sales in China fell sharply after one of its suppliers was discovered last July to be using expired and contaminated chicken and beef. More recently, several Japanese customers have reported finding bits of plastic and even a tooth in their food. Geopolitics has not helped. Last year some Russian outlets were temporarily closed by food inspectors, seemingly in retaliation(报复) for American and European sanctions(制裁) against Russia over its military intervention in Ukraine. Some politicians in Russia have even called for the chain to be thrown out the country completely.
But McDonald’s also has problems at home. It faces competition from other fast-food chains such as Burger King, which has been gaining market share with a simpler and cheaper version of the McDonald’s menu. And it is being squeezed by more upmarket “fast-casual” restaurants such as Shake Shack and Chipotle Mexican Grill, which are rapidly growing. They have been attracting customers—particularly younger ones—away from McDonald’s chicken nuggets and chips by offering slightly better quality food, a high level of customization (such as the option to choose the ingredients in a burger) and some table service.
McDonald’s seems to have two options: to imitate the likes of Burger King and go back to basics, or to reform to compete with the likes of Shake Shack. The chain seems to be trying to do both. It now has two new formats, one offering a simpler menu, and another called “Create your taste”, letting customers customize their burgers. Similarly, it has opened “McCafés” in several countries. In France, one of the few parts of the world where McDonald’s sales are still rising, these offer macaroons, tea and coffee in china cups and saucers, as well as some limited waitress service. It hasn't always gone smoothly: some of the restaurants in Paris were forced to put signs on the bins saying “please do not throw away the crockery”. As McDonald’s tries to reinvent itself, it may find that disposing of its traditional image will prove much harder.

The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage
There is no Blank Space in Taylor Swift’s bank account. The singer-songwriter tops Forbes annual list of the 100 highest-paid celebrities with $170 million.
Swift is ahead of fellow pop stars Adele at No. 9 with $80.5 million, Madonna at No. 12 with $76.5 million, Rihanna at No. 13 with $75 million and Katy Perry at No. 63 with $41 million.
The song Shake It Off and 1989 World Tour earned more than $200 million for her last year.
Swift’s ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris landed at No. 21 on the magazine’s list with $63 million. However, her current BF didn’t make the list.
Beyonce and Jay Z. are this year’s highest-paid celebrity couple, with $107.5 million over the past year.
Other top ten earners included boy band One Direction at No. 2 with $110 million. The Korean boy band Big Bang is at No. 54, which is the first time for them.
    11. Who is among the top 10 earners in Forbes annual list of the highest-paid celebrities? (B)
    12. Which of the following is not a contributing factor to Taylor Swift’s success in Forbes annual list of the highest-paid celebrities? (C)
    13. Which of the following statements is TRUE? (B)

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage
The first time I saw olive trees was when I visited my grandmother in Greece. I couldn’t believe trees could look so old. But actually in the right climate – like the Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters – anywhere olive trees could get from five hundred to fifteen hundred years.
Nothing on the olive tree was wasted. The dead branches were used for heating. Some of the crop was saved to be eaten. The olive meats were also pressed to squeeze out oil, which was used for cooking or was rubbed into the skin to keep it soft, and a few drops in just-washed hair acted as a good conditioner. The meats left in the press were used to feed the animals. My grandmother didn’t use candles. Instead, she put olive in a glass with a little water and make an olive-oil candle. When the oil was used up, the water put out the flame.
As you can see, the olive is a very determined fruit from a practically indestructible tree.
    14. How long could an olive tree live? (A)
    15. Which of the following can’t olive oil be used for? (C)
    16. What can olive trees provide according to the passage? (D)

    Section C Longer Conversations
Directions: In Part C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 17 through 18 are based on the following conversation
W: Have you ever reached for another potato chip, only to realize that you had eaten the entire bag without stopping? Do you acknowledge you have a bad habit but can’t seem to get rid of it? Today we have Richard O’Connor, author of Change Your Brain to Break Bad Habits, to share his opinion. What do you think makes people fail to kick a bad habit, Richard?

M: People believe they lack will power, but will power is not something you either have or don’t. It’s a skill that can be developed with practice by telling yourself no.

W: Would you please go into it in more details?

M: The real secret is not to try to break a habit but to learn to focus on a positive activity you feel good about.

W: That is what you defined in your book as replacement therapy. Am I right?

M: Yes. And you should be realistic when setting goals.

W: What do you mean by saying being realistic?

M: First, you can set up your motivational goal, which is also where you want to end up. Then work out your concrete steps for the next day, week or month.

W: What else can we do to help reach the motivational goal?

M: Make your goals public. It can give you motivation when your friends and family help you by reminding you of your goals.

W: Practice is the key. Thank you, Mr. O’Connor.
    17. What is the key to replacement therapy? (D)
    18. Why should you make your goals public? (B)

Questions 19 through 20 are based on the following conversation
    Fox: Good Morning.
Little Prince: Good Morning. Who are you? You are very pretty.
    F: I’m a fox.
P: Come and play with me. I’m so terribly sad.
F: I cannot play with you. I’m not tame.
P: Oh! I’m so sorry. But what does “tame” mean?
F: It is something which is too often forgotten. It means to establish ties …
    P: To establish ties?
F: That’s right. To me, you are still just a little boy like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you have no need of me, either. To you, I am just a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, we shall need one another. To me, you will be unique. And I shall be unique to you.
P: I’m beginning to understand. There is a flower… I think she has tamed me…
F: Possibly. One sees all sorts of things on Earth…
P: Oh! But this is not on Earth.
    F: On another planet?
    P: Yes.
F: Nowhere is perfect. My life is all the same. I hunt chickens and men hunt me. All chickens are alike and all men are alike. But if you tame me, my life will be full of sunshine. I shall recognize the sound of a step different from all others. The other steps send me hurrying underground. Yours will call me out of my cave like the sound of music. So it will be marvelous when you have tamed me! I beg of you… tame me!
P: Willingly, but I haven’t got much time. I have friends to discover and a lot of things to understand.
F: One can only understand the things one tames. Men have no time to understand anything. They buy ready-made things in the shops. But since there are no shops where you can buy friends, men no longer have any friends. If you want a friend, tame me!
    P: What should I do?
F: You must be patient. First you will sit down at a little distance from me, like that, in the grass. I shall watch you out of the corner of my eye and you will say nothing. Words are a source of misunderstandings. But every day, you can sit a little closer to me …
P: Now I understand. My flower is unique, because she is the one I have watered. And it is her that I have listened to complaining or boasting or sometimes remaining silent. Because she is my rose.
F: Now here is my secret for you. It is very simple. It is only with one’s heart that one can see clearly. What is essential is invisible to the eye. Men have forgotten this basic truth, but you must not forget it. For what you have tamed, you become responsible forever. You are responsible for your rose.
    19. Why does the fox want the little prince to tame him? (C)
    20. What is the secret the fox tells the little prince? (A)
