I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six years, I was treading water(停滞不前), just trying to earn an income. I tried journalism, but I didn’t think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.
I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words.
It takes confidence to make a new start—there’s a dark period in-between where you’re neither one thing nor the other. You’re out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you’re too ashamed to say, “Well, I’m writing a novel, but I’m not quite sure if I’m going to get there.” My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside.
Then I met an agent(代理商) who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel.
The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal—that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.
It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck—of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there’s no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract(合同) of the publisher—to be a published writer—is unbelievably rewarding.
24. Why did the author decide to write a novel?
A. Because she hated her previous jobs.
B. Because her parents and friends had encouraged her to do so.
C. Because she wanted to pursue her own dream of writing a novel.
D. Because she graduated from university with a good degree in English Literature.
25. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 mean?
A. She became less independent. B. She became more reliable.
C. She suddenly lost confidence. D. She gradually gained confidence.
26. Who agreed to publish the author’s first novel?
A. An agent who she signed with.
B. A rights assistant she once worked with.
C. An agent who advised her to send her novel out to agents.
D. A publisher who she once worked for as a rights assistant.
27. Which of the following words can best describe the author’s experience as a writer?
A. Tough but rewarding. B. Interesting and smooth.
C. Difficult but exciting. D. Complicated and fruitless.
C
Creative and can-do Australians are collecting waste plastics and making new products using homemade machines. Precious Plastic SA is part of an international community of more than 40,000 people working to battle against plastic pollution.
Environmental science student Lucy Dunton said she got the idea from designer and maker Dave Hakkens' video on Facebook. Mr. Hakkens is from the Netherlands and posts videos about how to make things out of waste plastics on social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube.
“We're really interested in doing something, changing the way people think and creating this amazing community, to share skills and advice and connect with like-minded people,” she said. “Plastics can be used to make useful, everyday things as a way to fight plastic pollution. We want to encourage and support those who have started or want to start their own project, by acting as guides and sharing advice and resources.” The group is growing as others put their hands up to offer their time, skills and resources through the website and join the group.
Environmental science student Aiden Ryan worked with mechanical engineer Luke Christiansen to build the team's compressor (压缩机) in Luke's Dad's storeroom at Holdfast Bay, South Australia. They're now collecting parts for a shredder, so they can stop cutting plastics by hand. Raw materials come from organized beach cleans. They take their collection of plastics back to the storeroom where they are turned into new plastic products such as bowls and plates.
“A bowl could be made out of 10 reusable plastic containers,” Mr. Ryan said. He hopes to start selling the new plastic products soon.
Nic Wipf-Grant, one of the founders of Precious Plastic SA, says it is part of the growing sharing economy. “We want neighbours to share skills with neighbours,” he said. “We want neighbours to bring their plastics over and make bowls, plates and iPhone covers as gifts for their family and friends.”
28. What is one main purpose of Precious Plastic SA?
A. To raise money for ocean protection. B. To encourage people to cut down on waste.
C. To suggest using resources reasonably. D. To help people fight against plastic pollution.
29. What can we learn about Dave Hakkens?
A. He is an Australian designer. B. He helps Lucy Dunton post videos.
C. He cares about the environment. D. He is a member of Precious Plastic SA.
30. What's the purpose of mentioning Aiden Ryan and Luke Christiansen?
A. To show they have a business spirit.
B. To explain their great interest in science.
C. To explain the way to protect the environment.
D. To show many people play a role in Precious Plastic SA.
31. What does Nic Wipf-Grant think of Precious Plastic SA?
A. It encourages sharing. B. It sets a good example to new setups.
C. It will become popular soon. D. It has changed people's ideas about plastics
D
Chat GPT is a new AI system that sounds so human in conversations that it could host its own radio programs. Reading between its instantly created, perfectly grammatical lines, people see different visions of the future. Without doubt, Chat GPT is impressive.
Some compare the emergence of Chat GPT to the impact of the iPhone, but that doesn’t do it fair. Chat GPT, as well as the creative AI that will follow and outsmart it, is disruptive. And yet, that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the world is upon us. On the contrary, Chat GPT, I would argue, might serve to make us more aware of our irreplaceable human qualities.
Take the creative act, writing in particular, as an example. If you want it to, the AI-powered chatbot (聊天机器人) always produces something because it has the whole world of online data to draw from. But unlike us, it lacks the consciousness. Thinking is hard, critical thinking even harder, and Chat GPT isn’t good at either. It just restates what has already been said; it is one big recycling machine.
There is another obvious limitation of Chat GPT. Philosopher Harry Frankfurt once claimed: the difference between a bullshitter (胡说八道的人) and a liar is that the liar knows what the truth is but decides to take the opposite direction; a bullshitter, however, has no idea for the truth at all.. Chat GPT will reproduce misinformation from any of its input sources — it is not an intelligent system that tries to balance or weigh different perspectives. In this sense, everything that Chat GPT writes is bullshit.
This is why the so-called AIQ is critical. It is actually an extension and a measurement of our human IQ: our overall knowledge of AI tools, our mastery of information, and our ethical awareness. Chat GPT is going to change everything—-and nothing. Creativity, imagination and ethics—these will all remain unique human range. It is the AI’s very limitations that will make us appreciate our own.
32. What can we learn about Chat GPT from the passage?
A. It helps produce an artificial voice.
B. It offers a service for language learning.
C. It provides instructions on writing skills.
D. It produces immediate language responses.
33. What does the underlined word “disruptive” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Evil B. Profitable C. Revolutionary D. Reliable
34. Why does the author consider Chat GPT as a bullshit creator?
A. It makes up lies constantly. B. It can’t tell right from wrong.
C. It often makes unfair judgement. D. It always takes a neutral standpoint.
35. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. Chat GPT is causing panic now.
B. Chat GPT is probable to produce bullshit.
C. Chat GPT should be treated like a toy, not a tool.
D. Chat GPT makes us realize the unique human features.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
I have a drawer full of letters to Santa. Each year my children would write up their Christmas wish lists. They were polite requests for the latest game or toy. As the children got older, they would give Santa some hints(提示)on where to buy their presents. 36
Those letters taught my children a valuable lesson about writing: It has a purpose. Sometimes our purpose is to achieve something; other times it may be to entertain, inform, or persuade. 37 And when writing doesn’t seem to have any purpose or get any kind of meaningful response, then it can be hard to get excited about doing it.
Christmas is a great time of year for children to communicate with others through writing. When children write for real audiences and real purposes, they can learn to choose their words accordingly. 38 You write “Dear Santa” because you don’t know him personally and you want to show him respect.
39 Texting, online messaging, live chats while playing video games all mean that they are constantly producing written messages. However, because they are usually writing to family and friends, they use informal language most of the time.
There is nothing wrong with this kind of writing. It suits the audience and the purpose and gets the job done. 40 This type of writing won’t be rewarded by the school examiner, nor by a future employer or a potential client. The very best communicators are those who know how to adjust their language to match their audience.
A. It isn’t that these young people can’t write.
B. But it is always purposeful or at least it should be.
C. The age of pen-and-paper letter writing may have passed.
D. As a result, each year they received something they wanted.
E.You write“Hi Nanna and Pop”because you are close to them.
F. As technology develops, young people are writing more than they ever have.
G. But if this is the only kind of writing young people do, it will cause problems.

“Judy, hurry up! Let’s go to the beach!” That was a familiar morning call from my older brother, Sirin. Hearing that, I would spring up quickly and we would set off on our journey. Raised by our grandparents in Savanna, we experienced our happiest moments there. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, with its lush green trees, crystal-like ocean, and clear blue sky, Savanna was like a small village from a fairy tale.
Sirin and I often enjoyed the gentle sea breeze as we explored the breathtaking coast, with the endless, open water beside us and the vast, clear sky overhead. We felt a sense of freedom to wander the sandy beach or experience the excitement of sailing out to sea, delighting in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature’s wonders. When we grew tired, leisurely walking on the soft, warm sands to collect unique, fascinating seashells brought us a different kind of peaceful joy. The friendly, warmhearted villagers treated us like family, often sharing their freshly-caught seafood with us.
Three years later, we were taken away from the village to receive a better education by our parents. Occupied with our study, we rarely visited our beloved grandparents, only calling them occasionally. We gradually adapted to the fast-paced city life and found it more efficient and convenient. Whenever we had an appetite for seafood, our dad would simply order it through his phone, and it would be delivered to our doorstep within minutes. In addition to seafood, we could order anything our hearts desired, no matter how late it was. What we loved most was the convenience of not needing to wash the dishes after eating, as they were all disposable, designed for single use.
However, deep within us, we sometimes longed for the simple pleasures of village life. We were told by our grandparents that more and more tourists flooded into the village, which strengthened our desire to return. So, when the eagerly-awaited summer vacation arrived this year, we finally made our dream trip back to our childhood paradise. After greeting our grandparents with hugs and smiles, we eagerly headed towards the sun-kissed seaside to relive our cherished memories.

Dear Jack,
How have you been? Recently, my school held a series of activities on National Disaster Reduction Day, and I would like to share with you some of the highlights.
Firstly, we had a lecture on disaster prevention and reduction, which was delivered by a local expert. He introduced various types of disasters that could occur in our area, such as earthquakes, floods, and typhoons, and taught us how to prepare for them.
In addition to the lecture, we also participated in a simulation exercise. The school created a scenario in which a strong earthquake hit our city, and we had to respond accordingly. We learned how to evacuate, provide first aid, and cooperate with emergency responders.
Personally, I found these activities very informative, and they made me more aware of the importance of disaster prevention and reduction. I realized that we should not take our safety for granted and need to be prepared for emergencies.
How about in your country? Do you have any similar activities? I'd love to hear from you.
Best regards,
Li Hua

参考范文
Paragraph 1:
However, what we saw shocked us. Plastic bags and single-use containers littered the beaches, and we could hardly see any undersea creature in the once crystal-clear sea. To make matters worse, the water was dark and difficult to see through. Because of the unpleasant smell, we had to cover our noses. With tears blurring our vision, we desperately wondered what had happened to our beloved village. Looking at our anxious faces, Grandfather sighed with his head bowed. It was those visitors who did help us earn more money, but they also brought massive amounts of rubbish, which caused severe pollution and changed our beautiful village completely. While telling us about the changes, Grandfather gazed at the sea, his eyes filled with disappointment and helplessness.
Paragraph 2:
Hearing Grandfather’s words, we couldn’t wait to do something to tackle the pollution. Without hesitation, Sirin and I took off our shoes and walked near the sea to collect the rubbish with our bare hands. Seeing what we were doing, our family and some villagers joined us in our efforts. Some villagers fetched helpful tools, like sticks and nets, which were quite useful in catching the waste. I also pulled out my mobile phone and took photos of the rubbish floating on the surface of the sea. By posting those images on social media, I hoped more people could be aware of the pollution and lend a helping hand too. Much to our relief, our joint efforts made a difference. The seaside became clean once more, and the breeze from the sea smelled fresh and sweet again.

M: Great, thanks! I visited York with Helen and the kids. York is a really beautiful historic city and there are lots of old buildings. And my friend booked us a really nice hotel.
W: Oh? What did you do while you were there?
M: Well, we visited the old castle on Saturday. I love history and the kids enjoyed exploring all the different rooms. And we visited the museum on Sunday. It’s so interesting. You can see what the town looked like in the past.
W: What did you do on Saturday evening?
M: I wanted to go to a football match, but there were no tickets. So we went to see a movie instead. The kids liked it, but I didn’t. It was boring, to be honest.
W: What did you do for food?
M: Helen likes trying new food different from Italian food. So we planned to go to a Thai restaurant. Helen enjoyed it, but the kids didn’t like the food, so we walked to a Chinese restaurant, further along the street.

10. 【原文】M: Hi, I’m Chris from Florida. Last year, I moved to London, where I’m working for an American company. It’s been a big change, and there have been lots of things to get used to. For example, in the U.S. we drive on the right, while here in Britain I’ve had to get used to driving on the left.
What else? Well, the weather in Florida is usually great, so I’m used to lots of sunshine, and I used to sunbathe a lot. In London it rains so much. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it, and I always remember to take my umbrella with me.
Food in England is different, too. In America, I used to eat a lot of Mexican food. Here in England, people love Indian food, so I’m getting used to the different tastes. At the company where I work, it’s quite different. I used to work from 9 a.m. till 11 p.m. I hated working so late. Here in England, I start at 8:30 a.m., but finish at 5 p.m. On Friday evening English people like to go to the club with friends, but in America I used to go to the gym. I love sports.
Is there anything else? Some of the words are different. The subway is called the “underground” in London, and British people call the fall “autumn”.
