    UN fficial hails China's help fr needy(frm China Daily)
    UNITED NATIONS - China's experience and "enrmus prgress" in emergency preparedness and disaster risk reductin prvide a gd example fr the rest f the wrld, said a senir UN fficial.
    Valerie Ams, a frmer British diplmat wh heads the UN Office fr the Crdinatin f Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), will visit Shanghai and Beijing frm Oct 11 t 17 befre leaving fr the Demcratic Peple's Republic f Krea.
    Befre setting ff fr China, Ams spke with China Daily and ther Chinese media at the UN headquarters in New Yrk n China's rle and cntributin t the wrld bdy's humanitarian assistance effrts.
    "China has always been a gd partner in the UN system as a whle," said Ams, adding that China's cntributin t the rganizatin's humanitarian effrts "has grwn ver the years".Last year, China gave abut $11 millin t the Haiti earthquake relief effrt and $18 millin t help tackle the flding crisis in Pakistan, said Ams, wh became the under-secretary-general fr OCHA last September.
    During the trip, her first t China, Ams will attend a reginal partnership meeting in Shanghai and meet fficials frm key ministries, which she described as a gd pprtunity fr her t "explre pssibilities fr sharing knwledge and experiences as well as t discuss ways that OCHA is wrking t becme mre effective as an rganizatin".
    "I particularly want the trip t fcus n preparedness and disaster risk reductin. China has dne a huge amunt f wrk internally n this, and I think we can benefit in the regin and glbally frm China's experience," said Ams.
    "The meetings (in China) will be abut hw we see the challenges ging frward fr ur humanitarian system as a whle - bth in terms f the scale and depth f disasters," she added.
    Ams said the OCHA can build n China's experience and enrmus prgress in dealing with preparedness and disaster risk reductin natinally and utilize that experience reginally and glbally."And I really want t explre with the Chinese authrities hw we can d that," said Ams.She als praised China's cntinuing effrt in helping cuntries in need - the mst recent case being the Hrn f Africa.
    "China is ne f ur key partners, respnded very quickly and has been very supprtive," said Ams.An estimated 13 millin peple in Smalia, Kenya, Ethipia and Djibuti in the Hrn f Africa are facing severe fd shrtages caused by drught, accrding t the UN.
    Smalia is bearing the brunt f the mst severe fd crisis in Africa. Abut 3.6 millin peple, half f the cuntry's ppulatin, are at risk f starvatin. Mre than half f all Smali children are malnurished, with six infants dying frm malnutritin every day.
    At a recent UN ministerial summit n the Hrn f Africa crisis, Freign Minister Yang Jiechi annunced a dnatin f $70 millin in emergency grain aid and financial supprt, including a $16 millin dnatin t the Wrld Fd Prgramme t supprt famine-relief peratins in Smalia.
