“Sing for Life” will sign up(签约) more than 40 local women to take part in a 10-week singing project. They prepare for a live performance at The Cresset this November, and support charity(慈善) partner Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. Participants(参加者) will learn to sing, meet new people, perform live on stage and raise money for this local charity.
Completely no singing experience is needed, just a willingness to step outside your comfort zone (舒适区), be interested and give it ago... “Sing for Life is not about finding the next Adele; it’s about helping ordinary women find their voice,” says Willam Prideaux.
After missing a year because of Covid-19, last year’s project was a very large one. Over 100 women signed up in September 2021, and all were thirsty for learning to sing and raise money for Thorpe Hall Hospice...They raised almost £10,000 in the end, which is phenomenal.
For most of the participants, it was their very first experience of singing in public, and the experience was positive. Choir(合唱团) member Raluca says, “Sing for Life showed me how the expert guide can turn total strangers into a performing choir in just a few weeks.”
Reka agrees, “Sing for Life was a fantastic thing to do soon after moving to Peterborough. I felt very happy doing what I love with like-minded, kind people. It was great to make new friends, be part of something bigger and raise money for charity!”
Helen Kingston at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice says, “We are glad that Sing for Life 2022 will raise the roof helping Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. Our care teams do all we can to make room for the things that matter-like spending time with loved ones, sharing stories, jokes and memories, and filing their final days with love. Wish everyone lots of luck―we can’t wait to hear the group hit the high notes!”

A Massachusetts high school has been unable to turn off its smart lights system since August of 2021 when the software (软件) running failed.
When Minnechaug Regional High School had a smart lights system installed (安装) years ago, the goal was to save money and energy. No one ever imagined that one day, the 7,000 lights would have been running continuously at full brightness since mid-2021, wasting money greatly. There seems to be no way to turn off the lights at this time.
“We know this is costing an amazing amount of money,” Aaron Osborne, an official at the Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District, told NBC News. “And we have been doing everything we can to get this problem solved.”
Unfortunately, solving the problem is harder than it sounds. The company that installed the smart lighting system didn’t think to include physical light switches (开关), using software to control all the 7,000 lights instead. When that software failed in August 2021, the school connected the company that had installed it, only to learn that there wasn’t much to be done. 5th Light, the company that had installed the system, changed hands several times and is now owned by another company called Reflex Lighting. The only way to solve the problem was to replace (更换) the hardware.
Mainly because of supply chain (供应链) problems in China caused by the Covid-19, getting the parts, required to finally turn off the 7,000 lights is very challenging. The repairs should have been carried out in early 2022, but they were put off all through the year. Now, the lighting company says that it received all the necessary replacement parts and the lights will finally be turned off next month.
It’s hard to judge how much money it cost to keep them running non-stop for 17 months. Paul Mustone, president of the Reflex Lighting Group, told reporters that the problem will finally be fixed next month.
    23. The 7,000 lights haven’t been able to be turned off in the school ________.
    A. since August 2021 B. for over 2 years C. since January, 2022 D. for over 3 years
    24. The lights couldn’t be turned off mainly because of ________.
    A. the Covid-19 B. smart lighting system failure
    C. physical light switches D. the improper use of the school
    25. Which of the following is true according to the report?
    A. Reflex Lighting installed the lighting system.
    B. The necessary replacement parts are from China.
    C. The repairs were carried out in time in early 2022.
    D. The school didn’t connect the installation company.
    26. The underlined word “them” in the last paragraph refers to “________”.
    A. the lights B. the costs C. the problems D. the repairs
A 24. B 25. B 26. A
根据第一段“A Massachusetts high school has been unable to turn off its smart lights system since August of 2021 when the software (软件) running failed.” 故选A。
根据第二段中“When Minnechaug Regional High School had a smart lights system installed (安装) years ago, the goal was to save money and energy. No one ever imagined that one day, the 7,000 lights would have been running continuously at full brightness since mid-2021, wasting money greatly.”
根据第五段中“Mainly because of supply chain (供应链) problems in China caused by the Covid-19, getting the parts, required to finally turn off the 7,000 lights is very challenging...Now, the lighting company says that it received all the necessary replacement parts...”
根据“It’s hard to judge how much money it cost to keep them running non-stop for 17 months.” 故选A。
    D
My teachers discovered my paper-thin, worn-out clothes, my bad body smell, the countless hurts and burns, and why I hunted for food from dustbins. My second-grade teacher, Ms. Moss, asked the headmaster for help. The next morning, my mother, an alcoholic(酒鬼), and the headmaster had a private meeting. Then Ms. Moss lost her job and I never saw her again.
Things went worse. I lived in the downstairs garage, did all chores, but received almost no food. My mother even changed my name “David” into “it”, and punished my brothers if they gave me food, used my real name or even looked at me.
My only safe haven(港湾) were my teachers. They did their best to make me feel like a normal child. Sitting in the garage and shivering from the cold, I closed my eyes, pictured my teacher’s face and felt warm inside.
One Friday afternoon, I looked at my headteacher, Mr. Ziegler. I knew he felt my pain. I bowed my head in respect, somehow hoping for a wonder.
On March 5, 1973, my hopes were answered. Four teachers, the school nurse and the headmaster decided to ask the local government for help. Because of my condition, I was immediately placed into protective custody(监护). Before I left, they hugged me one by one. ▲ They reminded me of Ms. Moss. As a child called “it”, I felt I wasn’t worth their trouble.
One teacher gently whispered, “No matter the result, whatever happens to us, this is something we must do. As teachers...if we can influence one child’s life...This is the true meaning of our job.”
After a round of goodbyes, with tears running down my face, I promised I’d never forget them and do my best to make them proud someday.
On March 5, 1993, I returned to Thomas Edison Elementary and presented my teachers with my first book, A Child Called “It”. I looked at them, tears running down their faces, and said, “As a child I learned that teachers have but one goal: to somehow make a difference in a child’s life. My four teachers, school nurse and headmaster risked their jobs to save the life of a child called ‘it’. I cannot, will not forget their courage and belief. Twenty years ago, I promised to my teachers. And tonight I renew(重申) my promise.”

    A. be a good teacher at the school B. encourage children to read his book
    C. make a difference in a child’s life D. continue to make them proud of him
    30. The best title of the passage is ________.
    A. A Kind Headteacher B. A Happy Childhood

Many think the word emoji comes from emotion. In fact, it’s from the Japanese for pictures, plus letter, or character.
In the 1990s, the Japanese mobile phone operator DoCoMo tacked a heart pictograph(图画文字) on to a cheap pager(传呼机), which was a great success with teenagers.
Kurita led the team at DoCoMo that designed a set of 176 pixelated (像素化的) characters inspired by basic concepts of things like weather, food, and feelings. They were called emoji. The first set of emoji launched on DoCoMo phones in 1999.
Other Japanese companies quickly followed DoCoMo’s lead and developed their own versions of emoji. Since then, emoji have exploded.
Emoji have been available outside of Japan since the mid-2000s through separate apps, which let users copy and paste the icons into text messages and emails. An emoji keyboard was added to Apple iPhones by 2011.
Today, emoji are part of our everyday vocabulary. However, emoji isn’t language and it isn’t ruining language.
