At 12, 139 feet above sea level, Potala is the highest palace in the world. The 1, 300-year-old palace was originally built by Tibetan king Songtsen Gambo for Princess Wencheng of the Chinese Tang Dynasty. Eventually it was expanded and changed into the house for the Dalai Lama. Since 1959, it has been turned into a museum of Buddhism. In 1994, Potala Palace was named a World Heritage by UNESCO.

From Mozart to Metallica, tons of people enjoy listening to various types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Most believe that music helps increase creativity, but an international study conducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that view. The study results were echoed by scientists from Lancaster University, and the University of Gavle, saying their findings show music actually weakens creativity.
To reach their conclusions, researchers had volunteers complete verbal problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room, and then again while music played in the background. They found that background music significantly weakened the volunteers’ ability to complete tasks connected with verbal creativity. The team also tested background noises like those commonly heard in a library, but found that such noises had no influence on subjects’ creativity.
The tasks were simple word games. For example, volunteers were given three words, such as dress, rise, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word connected with all three that could be combined to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be “sun” (sundress, sunrise, sunflower). Volunteers completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while listening to two different types of music: rock music or light music
“We found strong evidence of weakened performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions,” says co-author D. Neil McLatchie of Lancaster University. He and his colleagues find that music negatively influences the verbal working memory processes of the brain, preventing creativity. Also, as far as the library background noises having seemingly no effect, the study’s authors believe that was the case because library noises create a “regular state” environment that doesn’t affect concentration.
“To conclude, the findings here challenge the popular view that music increases creativity, and instead show that music, whatever type it is, is always a disadvantage for creative performance in problem solving,” the study reads.
    24. The underlined word in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by ________.
    A. Challenged B. accepted C. doubted D. heard
    25. What were the volunteers asked to do in the study?
    A. To play music. B. To combine given words.
    C. To create new words. D. To connect words with music.
    26. What can we infer from the study?
    A. Quiet background inspires creativity best. B. Library noise does no harm to creativity.
    C. Music has a bad effect on language ability. D. Music types matter in creative performance.
27 Which is the main idea of the passage?
    A. Quiet Environments Prevent Concentration. B. Background NoiseAffects Concentration.
    C. Composing Music Weakens Creativity. D. Listening to Music Reduces Creativity.
    C
It has long been believed that the smart phones in our pockets are actually making us duller; but now there is evidence for it.
Researchers at the University of Texas discovered that people are worse at conducting tasks and remembering information if they have a smart phone within eye shot. In two experiments they found phones sitting on a desk or even in a pocket or handbag would distract users and lead to worse test scores even when it was set up not to disturb test subjects. The effect was measurable even when the phones were switched off, and was worse for those who were more dependent on their mobiles.
The researchers tested 520 university students on their memory and intelligence when in the presence of a smart phone to see how it affected them. Participants were told to complete tests in mathematics, memory and reasoning with their smart phones either on their desk, in their bag or pockets,or in another room. Those who had their phones on the desk recorded a 10 per cent lower score than those who left them in a different room on operational tasks, which measures working memory and focus. Those who kept their phones further out of sight in their pockets or their bags scored only slightly better than when phones were placed on desks.
The researchers found that the negative effect of having a phone within eye shot was much greater among those who said they were dependent on their smart phones. Participants who had expressed sympathy with phrases such as “I would have trouble getting through a normal day without my cellphone” and “using my cellphone makes me feel happy” performed as well as others when their phone was in a different room, but worse when it was placed on their desk.
The researchers said the effect arises because part of a smart phone users’ mind is devoted to trying not to think about distractions such as whether they have any messages when the smart phone is in their sight.
    28. For the people who scored the lowest, where did they put their cellphone?
    A. On the desk B. In their bags.
    C. In their pockets. D. In a different room.
    29. Which of the following will the researchers most probably agree with?
    A. People shouldn’t have a smart phone.
B Phones wouldn’t distract users when switched off.
    C. Those depending on mobiles are more likely to be distracted.
    D. Their research has completely changed people’s view on smart phones.
    30. According to the study, why did cellphones affect the participants?
    A. Using cellphones made them feel happy.
    B. They focused on trying to ignore distractions.
    C. They spent much time on the received messages.
    D. They couldn’t get through a day without cellphones.
    31. Where does the text probably come from?
    A. Book review. B. A Science fiction.
    C. Cellphone advertisement. D. A news report.
    D
“We are running out of space and the only places to go to are other worlds... Spreading out may be the only thing that saves us from ourselves. I am convinced that humans need to leave Earth.” These are the words of the famous scientist Stephen Hawking, spoken at a science festival in Norway in 2017, a year before his death.
Hawking was not alone in this view. Many experts feel that the only way for humanity to last far into the future is to colonize other planets. That way, if an asteroid, a terrible disease, nuclear war, or some other disaster strikes Earth, civilization as we know it would still have a chance. Mars is one of the most tempting destinations. NASA, the United Arab Emirates, the private company SpaceX, and the organization Mars One all have plans to send humans there. “Either we spread Earth to other planets, or we risk going extinct, SpaceX founder Elon Musk said at a conference in 2013.
But not everyone agrees that colonizing Mars or any other planet is such a great plan. The most common argument against going is that it’s just too expensive or dangerous. It will take huge amounts of money and other resources just to get people there, let alone set up a place for them to live. It’s not even clear if humans could survive on Mars. One of the biggest dangers there is deadly radiation that bombards the planet.
Maybe all the time and money people would pour into a Mars mission would be better spent on more urgent projects here on Earth, like dealing with poverty or climate change. Some experts argue that handling a problem like an asteroid strike or disease outbreak while staying here on Earth would be much easier and less expensive than surviving on a new planet.
In addition, moving to a new planet could harm or destroy anything that already lives there. Mars seems uninhabited, but it could possibly host microbial life. Human visitors may destroy this life or permanently change or damage the Martian environment. Some feel that’s too much of a risk to take.
What do you think? Should humans colonize outer space or stay home?
    32. What can be inferred from the passage?
    A. Many experts insist that humans should take the risk.
    B. Mars is the most attractive destinations for human beings.
    C. Hawking firmly believes the only way to save humans is moving to Mars.
    D. All the other experts don’t agree with Hawking’s idea.
    33. Why do some experts disagree with the plan to colonize Mars?
    A. It will cost much more money to settle on Mars than on Earth.
    B. It is too long a distance from the Earth to the Mars.
    C. Human visitors will bring diseases to Martian environment.
    D. The deadly radiation that bombards the planet is the biggest danger.
    34. What’s the writing purpose of the passage?
    A. To raise people’s awareness of protecting the environment.
    B. To present different opinions on whether to move to the Mars.
    C. To arouse readers’ reflection on whether to colonize outer space.
    D. To inspire people to deal with the environmental problems.
    35. In which section of a magazine is the passage most likely from?
    A. Fiction. B. Current affairs. C. Social Studies. D. Science.

    第二节(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea; the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year,I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn't break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, "This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up." When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens,I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn't break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.

    A clean-up activity
In order to help beautify our school campus, our class organized a clean-up activity around our school last weekend.
After having the sixth class, we jumped into action. We were divided into two groups: one group cleaned up the playground, the park and the public places while the other put the sign “No littering” at the proper places and called on our schoolmates, workers and teachers to protect our environment. After three hours’ hard work, we were happy to see that our school campus looked much cleaner than before.
The activity turned out to be a great success, which not only raised public awareness of environmental protection but also enriched our school life.

    续写答案

【答案】I knew I should do something. I went to my piggy bank and was about to break it and withdraw money when my mind came back to the bike I wanted to buy, and I hesitated. Thinking of the look in the eyes of the children hoping for help in the earthquake, I grabbed the piggy bank and threw it to the ground. Suddenly, the coins rolled all over the floor. "Yes, those children need help and need the money more." I said to myself.
My grandfather was surprised by my behavior. When he realized what had happened, he fondly touched my head and said, "Good boy, you did the right thing. Grandpa is proud of you." He continued, "My dear grandson, you deserve that bicycle. As a bonus, let's buy that bike together now. Then, go for a spring outing by bike. “Thank you, Grandpa. ” I was overwhelmed with happiness
