My wife, Hannah, and I don’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots gets either overwatered or underwatered, but after my diagnosis with brain cancer, I loved the idea of having something green around.
A friend gave me what he said was a lucky bamboo plant in a deep-green bowl. We placed the plant in the living room and I told Hannah I wanted to care for it myself. When it didn’t immediately turn yellow or lose leaves, I was pleasantly surprised. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment when I sometimes felt useless. As a family physician, I was used to offering care, not receiving it.
Since my diagnosis, I had to rely on help from other people. Watering the plant, small act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity.
After I recovered from the operation and returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height. Both the plant and I were thriving. Then, without any reason, it began to show signs of stress. Its leaves kept browning and dropping to the floor. Hannah reminded me that we’d seen houseplants die before, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that the plant had become a symbol of my health. I grew increasingly depressed and fearful.
Looking back, I realized I had wrongly connected my caring of the plant—something I could manage—with my own survival—something I couldn’t. Knowing I couldn’t control my fate (命运), my anxiety actually lessened. I began to search online to figure out how to care for my plant. Following the instructions, I transplanted the plant to a larger pot, giving it room to grow. When it was back in the sunny window, we both began to thrive again. Whenever I look at the plant in its new pot, I make a point to think of those who have cared for and supported me.
24. Why was the author surprised about the plant’s good condition?
A. Because he had unusual good luck.
B. Because his health was worsening.
C. Because he was diagnosed with brain cancer.
D. Because the plant didn’t grow badly like before.
25. What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 imply?
A. The author considered himself useless.
B. The author desired to provide care.
C. The author was concerned about his health.
D. The author hoped to return to work.
26. Why was the author fearful?
A. Because the plant’s poor health might indicate his death.
B. Because the stress of work would harm his well-being.
C. Because he may have to rely on others from then on.
D. Because he would experience a rather risky operation.
27. How did the author lessen his anxiety?
A. By searching plant knowledge online.
B. By accepting his unavoidable limitation.
C. By knowing he will survive in the end.
D. By thinking of those who supported him.
C
If you have gone to the cinema and watched the popular movie “The Wandering Earth II” recently, you might be impressed by the intelligent computer MOSS. It can make the reasonable decision in the shortest time based on the given conditions. In fact, such strong AI like MOSS does not exist in reality for the time being.
However, weak AI, which replaces human processing in a specific field, has already influenced our daily life. For example, OpenAI, the San Francisco-based startup opened up the language model ChatGPT for public testing in November 2022. Compared with traditional search engines, which display simple results according to searching keywords, ChatGPT can interact with people just like dialoguing, answer professional questions, and also answer follow-up questions. Thanks to its revolutionary user experience, ChatGPT obtained more than one million users just five days after its release.
More than a Chatbot, ChatGPT can also realize article creation, code generating and other functions only by requesting. ChatGPT can even write code such as Python, debug (排错) code and generate comments for code just like a professional programmer. It also presented strong capacity in content continuation, literary creation, music creation, etc. It is so powerful that New York City public schools have banned it from their networks and school devices.
However, ChatGPT is still far from perfect. Even OpenAI’s CEO once said, “It’s a mistake to be relying on it for anything important right now. It’s a preview of progress. We have lots of work to do on robustness (稳健性) and truthfulness.”
Even though AI like ChatGPT still has a long way to go, predictions about how the technology will influence our society are already there. Among the industries that may be most affected by ChatGPT, experts say, are journalism, law and translation.
28. Why is the movie “The Wandering Earth II” mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To prove that the movie is a hit.
B. To introduce the topic of the text.
C. To show how intelligent MOSS is.
D. To advertise the movie.
29. Which statement about ChatGPT will the author probably agree with?
A. It’s well-received for its truthfulness.
B. It can just display simple results content.
C. It should be banned from all school networks.
D. It makes human-machine interaction more intelligent.
30. What does the OpenAI’s CEO think of ChatGPT?
A. It’s totally reliable. B. It’s a product of accident.
C. It needs improving. D. It should speed up its progress.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Moss Beats ChatGPT B. OpenAI Develops Well
C.AI Takes Over D. ChatGPT Works

The Living Planet Index (LPI) report shows that wildlife numbers have dropped sharply since 1970. It says that, on average, wildlife populations dropped by 69% in the 48 years from 1970 to 2018. That’s a huge drop. Marco Lambertini, who leads the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), said, “The message is clear and the lights are flashing red.”
The LPI is reporting the average change in the size of animal populations over time. Some kinds of animals are in worse trouble than others. Populations of vertebrates (脊椎动物) that live in fresh water (not oceans) have dropped by 83%. The numbers of sharks and rays in the oceans have gone down by 71%. Central and South America and the Caribbean had the greatest population losses—a drop by 94%. Next came Africa, with a 66% drop, followed by Asia and the Pacific with a 55% drop. Europe and North America showed smaller losses. These areas probably had greater losses before 1970.
The biggest problem is the loss of wild areas to growing cities, and activities like farming and deforestation. Hunting, poaching (偷猎), overfishing, and pollution are also big challenges. Climate change is a growing problem, and may soon be the biggest one.
But there are some hopeful signs. About half of the populations are jarless or growing. In some cases, human efforts to protect animals are working. For example, nests of loggerhead turtles in Chrysochou Bay, Cyprus rose by 500% from 1999 to 2015 because of efforts to protect them.
An international meeting on biodiversity this December is seen as extremely important. The meeting, called COP15, is being run by the United Nations in Montreal, Canada. The meeting’s goal is to get countries to agree to new guidelines to help stop the loss of animals, plants and wild lands by 2030. “Our future depends on reversing (逆转) the loss of nature just as much as it depends on addressing climate change,” says Carter Roberts, who leads WWF in the US. “And you can’t solve one without solving the other.”
32. What does Marco Lambertini say about the drop of wildlife numbers?
A. It’s alarming. B. It’s unreal.
C. It’s tolerable. D. It’s puzzling.
33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Fast development of big cities.
B. Effects that climate change brings.
C. Causes for wildlife populations’ decline.
D. Challenges of protecting wild animals.
34. What does the underlined word “jarless” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Stable. B. Considerable.
C. Imbalanced. D. Shrinking.
35. Why is the meeting in the last paragraph considered important?
A. It is hosted by the UN for the first time.
B. It reports the main threats to humankind.
C. It offers a way to deal with climate change.
D. It aims to make new rules to protect nature.

作文范文:
Aimed at helping the students from poverty-stricken areas, the Student Union launched a grand charity sale last Friday at our school’s stadium, which witnessed the kindness and generosity of all the students and teachers present.
As scheduled, the activity began at 3:00 p.m., lasting three hours. What came first was a moving speech delivered by a volunteer, mirroring the authentic life of the needy students and kindling the kindness. What subsequently followed was the exciting sales section where many second-hand items, ranging from electronic devices to old fancy clothes, were sold at a pretty low price. So enthusiastic were our schoolmates and teachers that all goods were snapped up within hours. All the money raised would be sent to the Red Cross and distributed to those needy students.
This charity sale proved successful and meaningful. Not only did we students promote our social responsibilities, but we also understood every bit of our kindness could pile up enormous strength.

M: Then I strongly suggest this best-selling one. It must look great on you.
Text 2
W: Morning, Jack. I didn’t see you in the office yesterday. What happened?
M: Well, I had a terrible headache after I got up. So I took a day off and went to a clinic. (2)
W: How are you feeling today? Will you go to Daniel’s birthday party tomorrow?

M: Alright. It’s a pity you can’t join us.
Text 4
W: Let’s help Mom clean the house after dinner. Ever since we moved in, she has been busy doing the cleaning.
M: That’s great. You could tidy the bathroom and the kitchen, and I take charge of the living room.
W: Okay.
Text 5
M: Did you listen to the weather forecast for tomorrow?
W: Yes. The rain will stop tonight. There will be strong winds tomorrow morning and the sun will come out in the afternoon. (5)
Text 6
W: The Premier League season has begun. I remember you are a big fan of football, right?
M: Yes. Last Saturday, I went to a match with my son Michael in the stadium. (6) It was Chelsea F.C. playing against Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. A great cheer went up when every goal was scored.
W: Wow, that sounds interesting. How much did the tickets cost you? (6)
M: £76 for me and £28 for Michael. (6)
W: It’s well worth the price. I watched the game on TV. I hope I can be there next time. (7)

Text 7

W: Well, I used to spend a lot of time reading newspapers when I was in high school. But my friends hardly read them because they thought newspapers were boring. That’s why I started a newspaper for teenagers. (12)
M: So, why did you go for an online newspaper?
W: Well, I thought if my newspaper was the same as those traditional ones, it wouldn’t make a difference. I supposed teenagers may prefer an online newspaper. And I talked to a few schoolmates about my ideas after we graduated from university. They all agreed to join me. But you know, the first step is always difficult. We had problems in getting bank loans. Finally, I had to borrow some money from my parents and then we founded a small newspaper company. (13)

W: No, you don’t have to. Just scan the QR code on the table to order.
M: Oh, I see. So the first thing is to choose a hot pot. I know you like spicy food, don’t you?
W: Yes, but Bob isn’t keen on it. Let’s choose a hot pot with two flavors. Then I’d like sliced bacon, beef balls and shrimps. What about vegetables?
M: I want potato slices, lettuce and broccoli. For the drinks, I’d like a bottle of orange juice.
W: Okay. Bob likes egg dumplings. (17) I’ll order some.
M: Don’t forget tofu. It’s Mary’s favorite.
