I wish I’d been more confident in my own abilities, especially when I was at school.
I was a shy child and struggled a bit when talking to other people. On the whole, my parents were very supportive, always encouraging me and trying to help me relax in social situations, but I was always terribly self-conscious. I wish I hadn’t been so worried about what everybody thought of me. I know now that if you are extremely shy , then it’s hard work to have a conversation with you. Now I try to think about the other person I’m talking to and put them at ease in my company .However, at school, I found it especially difficult in my peer group. I wasn’t competitive, but I was aware of my appearance and I always compared myself to other people, usually coming to the conclusion that I wasn’t as clever or as popular or as cool as they were. I wanted to be popular. I know now that the kids who are considered the coolest at school aren’t necessarily the most popular or successful when they grow up.
I realize now that everything changes during your teen years — physically, mentally, socially and emotionally — and I just had a harder time than most. I wish I hadn’t let it stop me from doing things, though. I wish I’d taken a gap year or at least traveled more when I left school. But to tell the truth, I didn’t have the courage to go off alone before going to college. I could have gone to Europe and America with a friend as I’d saved up enough money, but in the end I just didn’t want to do it. My parents really wanted me to try a gap year. They said it would be a great experience before college. I think they were right, and now I won’t have another opportunity to do that for a long time.

A.Not paying enough attention to her parents. B.Not saving up enough money to go abroad.
C.Not going to college together with her best friend. D.Not being brave enough to travel before college.
27.Why does the author write this text?
A.To honor her parents B.To share her life lessons

The St. Louis soldier, Todd Nicely joined the navy in 2007, and was severely injured—lost his arms and legs and his life was almost taken away while serving abroad in 2010.
“I didn’t want to put my guys through anything that I wouldn’t want to do, so a lot of the times I was in the front,” he told the news while remembering the incident that changed his life. Over the past decade, Nicely has learned to adjust to the world with amputated arms and legs, a way of life that recently became a bit easier thanks to the addition of a service dog.
CHAMP Assistance Dogs in St. Louis, Missouri, gifted Nicely with a service dog named Hugo this season. The non-profit’s task focuses on connecting service dogs to people with disabilities who need them. Hugo is trained to assist Nicely with his day-to-day tasks, small gestures that add up to significant changes for the man.
“Nearly 12 years later, Hugo is pam of the family. Having him here to pick things up that I drop is kind of a blessing. It makes my quality of life a lot better,” Nicely told KMOV News 4.
This improved quality of life is what CHAMP works hard to provide for soldiers and other individuals who benefit from the support of a service dog. “Hugo is making a difference in Todd’s life. It is a wonderful feeling for all of us, and we are on top of the world in seeing someone become more independent because a dog is there to help them,” Pam Budke, CHAMP Assistance Dogs’ director, shared with KMOV News 4.
Nicely hopes that Hugo helps other soldiers by showing them it’s important to seek assistance when you need help. “You are supposed to be this tough man. Now, all of a sudden, you’re asking for help. It’s like, ‘am I weak?’ ‘No’,” Nicely said. “It doesn’t make you weak. It actually makes you stronger to ask for help,” he added.
28.Which of the following can describe Todd Nicely best in army service?
A.Lucky. B.Clever. C.Considerate. D.Well-educated.
29.What is the purpose of CHAMP Assistance Dogs?
A.To send homeless dogs to people. B.To help people train service dogs.
C.To make the disabled adjust to the world. D.To create a bond between the disabled and service dogs.
30.What does the underlined phrase “on top of the world” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Ashamed. B.Astonished. C.Delighted. D.Embarrassed.
31.What can be inferred about the soldiers from the last paragraph?
A.They seldom ask for help. B.They like being tough to others.
C.They love dogs more than anyone else. D.They need to show their weakness sometimes.
D
Imagine shopping in a store only to realize during checkout your wallet and phone are both left at ho me or missing! What if the cashier told you that you could pay using your palm?
This may soon become a reality thanks to Amazon's newest product: Amazon One. By linking your palm to a credit card, this technology could allow users to pay at stores
Amazon is piloting the hardware in two of its Amazon Go stores in Seattle, and plans to take it to twenty more in the near future. The company is also hoping to sell its technology to other retailers.
Like fingerprints, palm prints are unique to a person.Do you know that palm prints develop during the fetal(胎儿的)stage, even before we are born? Physical features such as palm veins(纹路), fingerprints, and facial characteristics are most commonly used for biometric identification. However, palm scan technology has been around for some time and is considered the safest of all.
Unlike fingerprint scans that may not record correct information when there is a cut or bruise, or when fingers are wet, palm scans are more reliable. By scanning your palm, it is more convenient to pay.The patterns of veins don't change during the human lifetime. More importantly, unlike fingerprints that can be copied fro m something people touch, it is not possible to get a picture of a person's palm and guess the vein patterns.
There are also some concerns about this new technology, one of which is security, as Amazon plans to store the users' palm data on the cloud. This is a risk as hackers can get access to this information unlike Apple's face scan technology that stores the data on your iPhone. In spite of this, it is a pretty impressive technology. Who knows how the world will develop in the future? All you may need to do is wave your hand.
32.What's the purpose of giving an example in paragraph 1?
A.To introduce the topic. B.To remind you to take-your phone and wallet.
C.To share an unhappy experience. D.To stress the importance of your palm.
33.What can we learn about palm-scan payment?
A.It has developed to a mature stage. B.It has been put into use in many countries.
C.It possesses some advantages over fingerprints. D.It may fail when you cut or dirty your palm.
34.Where is the text probably taken from?
A.A fashion book. B.A science magazine.
C.A research review. D.A travel brochure.
35.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.More Possibilities for Payment B.Palm-Scan Payment vs Other Payment
C.Scanning Your Palm to Pay D.Comparison of Various Modes of Payment
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As you get older, you'll meet a wider range of people from different cultures. Culture is an idea that isn't easy to understand. People often use the term to refer to things like food, holidays, clothing and music. 36 Religion, customs, beliefs and values are also part of your culture. So when meeting people from different backgrounds, you can sometimes find that there're huge differences in how you see the world.
37 For example, when you meet people from a different culture, ask them about their lives. It is one of the best ways to understand the culture. But be polite about it and remember they don't owe you an answer, and might not want to give it—not everyone wants to explain everything about their culture.
Maybe you've recently met someone from a different culture you find interesting. 38 Get to know his/her families and see how their customs and traditions differ from yours. You might be surprised to find how culturally different two people living even in the same town can be!
Read books by and about people who are different from you. Reading memoirs (回忆录), biographies and other nonfiction books is an obvious way to learn about a country or someone's life. 39 Like with books, you can also watch movies to learn more about a culture. What's more, keeping yourself in a different culture through travel is also an amazing way to understand another culture.
40 So accept and respect the differences between yourself and your friends from different cultures—remember that what is a difference to you is just their normal life!
A.Make friends with him/her.
B.But it also goes much deeper than that.
C.Show respect towards people from other cultures.
D.You may think you know a lot about a culture or place.
E.Differences between us are what makes life so interesting.
F.There are many ways to understand other people's cultures.
G.Also don't ignore novels that have been translated from other languages.

It seems that Chinese people have always loved to discuss 61 differences between northerners and southerners. Now, another difference has drawn wide attention: the way northerners and southerners shop 62 food at markets.
People from southern China normally buy 63 they need for just one or two meals at a time. It’s normal for them to buy just half a Chinese cabbage, two 64 (potato) and 25 grams of beef at a time. 65 , a person may be laughed at if they do this in the north. Instead, buying enough vegetables and meat for a week 66 (be) normal.
The different could be because of the different climates. Food can 67 (keep) for a long time in the north, as it’s 68 (usual) cold and dry there. Many northerners have the habit of 69 (store) food for a long time. But due to the hot and wet weather in the south, southern Chinese people prefer 70 (buy) just enough food for one meal or one day. Otherwise, the food may go bad.
Maybe these debates about different customs help us to understand each other better.

When Western parents are expected a baby, they start to think long and hardly about what they will name their child. The child will have to live with a name for their whole life after all.
Some parents seem focus on finding a name that is distinctive, a name that everybody likes it and nobody else uses. Also, sometimes it goes horribly wrong. One musician named his child Audio Science, while other couple named their kid Pirate. Recently, some parents in the US and Europe have gone as far as pay someone to come up with a name for them. Some companies charge a couple hundred dollars, and one Swiss company charges about $ 30,000 think of a unique name that has never been used before.

Text1:M: Would you like to go to the theatre tonight? I’ve got some tickets.
W: I’m sorry. I’ve arranged a party to meet some old friends tonight.
M: No problem. Maybe next time you’ll come.
W: Yes. That would be nice.
Text2:W: Tom seems like a good student.
M: He is certainly not so intelligent as George, but his grades are better than his.
W: Yeah, he works much harder.
Text3:M: This is the last time I’m coming to this restaurant.
W: It is said that their steaks are some of the best in town. What happened?
M: They’re excellent but always over-cooked. And I can’t get any waiter’s attention around here, either.
W: It’s alright. Let’s enjoy it, anyway.
Text4:W: There is a good comedy on at the Royal Theater next Saturday. Would you like to go with me?
M: Of course. Well, I’ll ask Janet if she is free. Then I can book seats for us.
Text5:M: Now, what seems to be the trouble, Mrs. Stevens?
W: I’ve been very dizzy lately. And last night, I had some chest pain.
M: Don’t worry. Let me have a look.
Text6:M: I see your old roommate Marie is featured on the cover of Vogue magazine.
W: Yes, and she was on Bella two months ago.
M: I can’t believe I’ve met her.
W: Her ship has certainly soared recently.
M: You sound bitter.
W: No, not really. I’m not jealous. It’s just that she doesn’t speak to any of her old friends any more.
M: Fame changes people, not always for the better.
W: I know. I just thought we were really close.
M: Guess you’re stuck with me then.
W: Friends for life.
M: Why don’t we go do something this evening?
W: Like what?
M: Like go bowling or see a show at the theater. Something to get your mind off this.
W: Honestly, I’m fine. I think I just need a hot bath and a good book.
Text7:W: It’s hot today. I’d like to have some ice cream. Do you want some, dear?
M: No, thank you. Do you know the danger you face when eating ice cream?
W: Yes, gaining weight.
M: No, not that. Have you heard about brain freeze?
W: No, what’s that?
M: For many people, eating ice cream or drinking an icy drink too fast can produce a terrible headache. It usually hits in the front of the brain. People also call it “ice cream headache”.
W: Okay. I see. You know what? After all these years, you sound more and more like my father.
Text8:W: Sometimes I just can’t figure out why some people always buy famous brands such as LV or Nike. What do you think about that, Tom?
M: Maybe they think that famous brands can make them feel good. You know, producers of famous brands spend a lot of money on their advertising. They want people to know that they are good enough to afford the best.
W: I can understand the influence of advertisements on people. But some people do not make that much money but spend half of their incomes on famous brands.
M: Oh, I see. Some people probably need to wear brand-name clothing to feel special and fashionable. They don’t want to be a nobody in the crowd.
W: Well, that’s one of the reasons they spend so much. They want to keep up with changing fashions, so they buy regardless of the price.
M: As far as I am concerned, I will buy things that are high quality at reasonable prices. There are also many cheap things with good quality. I never want to be a victim of advertisements.
W: I couldn’t agree more.
Text9:W: Did you report a break-in to us just now?
M: Well, it isn’t my place. I am just staying here for two months while my friends are out of the city. So besides the TV set and some paintings, I don’t really know what else is missing. All the drawers had been emptied out and I guess something was taken. My friends will be mad.
W: I see. Now...
M: It wasn’t my fault, of course. All the windows and doors were locked.
W: Now how exactly did you discover the break-in?
M: I went out at 7:00 as I do every Thursday to at-tend my computer class. Afterwards I stopped at a café for a drink and I got back here just after 11 o’clock.
W: How can you be so sure of the time?
M: Because I was at the café till the ten o’clock news was over, and it’s only a two-minute walk from here. Is there any chance of anything being recovered? I know my friends will be especially sad about the paintings.
W: We’ll do our best and let you know if we find anything. And if I were you, I would immediately call my friends.
Text10:M: Hi, everyone. I thought I would introduce myself as part of this site, and at the same time, make this introduction into a listening quiz. As you know, my name’s Randall Davis, and I’m originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, in the United States. When I was 19 years old, I moved to Venezuela in South America, and later returned to the United States in 1993. I entered Brigham Young University from 1993 to 1999, and I majored in Spanish education and Teaching English as a Second Language. After graduating from university, I moved to Tokyo, Japan, in the spring of 1999. Then, in 2006, I moved to Nagoya, Japan, where I currently live and teach. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, bike riding, playing basketball, and hearing from students from around the world.
