    Introducing Japan’s Most Beautiful Libraries
A library can be many things: a place to borrow books, a space for quiet study, an event space, and a community center. But as these four libraries in Japan show, some libraries can also be very beautiful!
    Toyo Bunko
Tokyo’s Toyo Bunko was first opened in 1924, and it’s Japan’s oldest and largest Asian studies library. As well as a library, it has a garden, a fountain, a museum and a restaurant. It also has around one million books, including 24,000 collected in China by English journalist George Ernest Morrison in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
    Kadokawa Culture Museum
Kadokawa Culture Museum, in Tokorozawa, Saitama prefecture, was designed by Yokohama-born architect Kengo Kuma. The building, which looks like a giant rock or a castle, includes art galleries and museums as well as several libraries. On the 4th floor is the huge Bookshelf Theater, which holds 20,000 books on 8-meter-tall shelves.
    Yusuhara Community Library
Yusuhara Community Library, also designed by Kengo Kuma, is in Kochi prefecture on the island of Shikoku. Filled with natural light, it was built in 2018 with local wood, and is meant to look like a “forest of knowledge” with sunshine coming down through leaves. The library has silent areas, areas for conversation, and an area with steps that can be used as seats or as an event stage. Guests are asked to take their shoes off to enjoy the feel of the wood floor under their feet.
    Takeo City Library
Takeo City Library, in Saga prefecture on the island of Kyushu, is a bright and spacious library with around 250,000 books. The building has a cafe and a bookstore, and around 20,000 picture books are in the children’s library next door. The library also has classes and events. Anyone living in Japan can borrow books and return them using a special delivery service.
21.Which library should you go if you want to read books from China and have a meal?
    A.Toyo Bunko. B.Takeo City Library.
C.Yusuhara Community Library. D.Kadokawa Culture Museum.
22.What do Kadokawa Culture Museum and Yusuhara Community Library have in common?
A.Built with local wood. B.Required to take off shoes.
C.Designed by the same architect. D.Filled with enough natural sunshine.
23.Which of the following is a unique feature of Takeo City Library?
A.It is located on the island.
    B.It offers drinks and food.
C.Only Japanese can borrow books and return them.
D.People in Japan don’t need to return books in person.
    B
For Western designers, China and its rich culture have long been an inspiration for Western creative.
“It’s no secret that China has always been a source(来源) of inspiration for designers,” says Amanda Hill, chief creative officer at A+E Networks, a global media company and home to some of the biggest fashion(时尚) shows.
Earlier this year, the China Through A Looking Glass exhibition in New York exhibited 140 pieces of China-inspired fashionable clothing alongside Chinese works of art, with the aim of exploring the influence of Chinese aesthetics(美学) on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. The exhibition had record attendance, showing that there is huge interest in Chinese influences.
“China is impossible to overlook,” says Hill. “Chinese models are the faces of beauty and fashion campaigns that sell dreams to women all over the world, which means Chinese women are not just consumers of fashion — they are central to its movement.” Of course, not only are today’s top Western designers being influenced by China—some of the best designers of contemporary fashion are themselves Chinese. “Vera Wang, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu are taking on Galliano, Albaz, Marc Jacobs—and beating them hands down in design and sales,” adds Hill.
For Hill, it is impossible not to talk about China as the leading player when discussing fashion. “The most famous designers are Chinese, so are the models, and so are the consumers,” she says. “China is no longer just another market; in many senses it has become the market. If you talk about fashion today, you are talking about China—its influences, its direction, its breathtaking clothes, and how young designers and models are finally acknowledging that in many ways.”
24.What can we learn about the exhibition in New York?
A.It promoted the sales of artworks. B.It attracted a large number of visitors.
C.It showed ancient Chinese clothes. D.It aimed to introduce Chinese models.
25.What does Hill say about Chinese women?
A.They are setting the fashion. B.They start many fashion campaigns.
C.They admire super models. D.They do business all over the world.
26.What do the underlined words “taking on” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A.learning from B.looking down on C.working with D.competing against
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Young Models Selling Dreams to the World
B.A Chinese Art Exhibition Held in New York
C.Differences Between Eastern and Western Aesthetics
D.Chinese Culture Fueling International Fashion Trends
    C
Mr. Smith, the professor at my business class, had a unique way of going over the answers to our weekly tests. For each question, he would ask a random student for their answer and then continue to grill(盘问追问) him/her, forcing him/her to defend that answer. It was certainly a memorable way to review. How I wished I’d been a more experienced student and got used to the professor’s grilling! I wasn’t, though.
But in my anatomy class, Dr. Cuddy introduced “high power” and “low power” body positions, saying “high power” positions involve taking up much space and making yourself look big, while “low power” poses, in contrast, involve making yourself look small, keeping your arms and legs crossed and held close. People tend to see others with high power poses as natural leaders, and are more willing to hire them. Her research finding was that spending just two minutes standing in a high power pose increased a person’s feeling of power and self-confidence. She wanted us to try it out.
On my next quiz-review day, instead of bending over my book studying quietly, I sat up straight and spread out my books and notebooks on the entire surface of my desk. When our teacher asked if anyone had any questions about the material before we began our quiz review, I raised my hand.
The effect was surprising. My professor answered my question as if talking to a colleague, and I had a wonderful feeling of calm. Suddenly, I realized that the important thing was that I was participating. I just needed to engage fully in the class and learn.
Today, before a presentation or a test, I spend a few minutes “thinking big”-taking up space and being seen. It calms me down and when I do, my best always turns out to be pretty good.
28.How did the author perform in his business class?
A.He was good at defending his answer. B.He had difficulty getting used to the professor.
C.He did good memorization for his weekly tests. D.He felt confident to question against the teacher.
29.What did Dr. Cuddy want her students to try out?
A.Keeping their arms crossed at a talk. B.Keeping their desks clean in class.
    C.Using low-power poses in class. D.Taking a high-power pose briefly.

30.What will the author spend time doing before a test?
A.Discussing the content with his classmates.
B.Going over his lessons without being seen.
C.Making himself look big and get noticed.
D.Collecting things on his desk to make it clean.
31.What is the author’s attitude towards “thinking big”?
    A.Favorable. B.Doubtful. C.Critical. D.Indifferent.
    D
Biologists in the United States are sounding an alarm about a deadly disease that has been attacking a quiet, intelligent animal: the bat. The disease, called white-nose syndrome, is an infection caused by a fungus (真菌) that attack the nose, wings, and other skin areas on the bodies of bats while they are hibernating (冬眠) in large groups in their caves. The disease was first discovered in a New York cave in the winter of 2006, and it is spreading quickly. Infected caves have been discovered in 19 states and in Canada.
Scientists have discovered that the source is a strain of a cold-loving fungus usually found in polar regions. They are not sure how the fungus kills bats. One theory is that the fungus causes discomfort. The bats began to become upset and partially wake up from hibernation. This activity causes them to burn precious stored body fat and die of starvation. Experts estimate that over 5. 5 million bats across nine species have disappeared because of the disease. Wildlife experts fear that if the infection spreads to more bat populations in the Southeast and Midwest, endangered bat species, such as the Indiana bat and Virginia big-eared bat, may be in grave danger of extinction.
Why should Americans care about the loss of these creatures? In warm months, bat fly at night, eating up to their body weight in insects. They control the populations of insects that bite, eat crops, destroy forests, and spread disease. Because of this, the United States government is getting involved. It has heard announcements from bat experts and is taking seriously their pleas (请愿) for funding to study the disease. The possibility of what one lawmaker called “an ecological and economic disaster” is very real if the deadly disease spreads further.
32.What causes white-nose syndrome among the bats?
    A.Ecological pollution. B.A cold-loving fungus.
C.The freezing climate. D.The lack of food.
33.What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A.Where the experts discovered the disease. B.Why the bats’ hibernation is disturbed.
C.How the fungus possibly affects bats. D.What contributed to the concern of the experts.
34.What is the main concern about the extinction of the bat in the US?
A.The imbalance of the ecosystem. B.The destruction of the forests.
C.The spread of the disease. D.The decrease of the insect population.
35.What is the US government most likely to do in the future?
A.To introduce laws to protect bats.
B.To appeal to people to stay away from infected bats.
C.To declare the coming of an ecological disaster
D.To approve funding for bat disease research.

Walk Out of the Comfort Zone and Try New Things
For most high school students, free periods (课,节) are useless. From what I have seen, few do homework. 36 . This makes it impossible for those who actually want to do work to complete any. As a senior next year, I think extra periods should be used to take optional subjects.
37 . Now is the time for us students to choose a suitable one. We will experiment in different fields of study. We will never know if we are interested or talented in a subject if we don’t try it.
In my 8th grade, I was told that I had to take an art class as a graduation requirement; so in the 9th grade I took Studio and Art. One of the projects was to build a clay pot, but I built mine incorrectly, so it broke in the kiln (窑). 38 . Now I know for sure that I do not want to be an artist. However, the class was one of my favorites that year. I was able to try new activities and test my ability.
39 ! College is when we should focus on a specific major, but high school is when we have to figure it out.
Half of all college students change their major at some point. By doing that hundreds of dollars are wasted on classes that they would have never needed to take. So use our extra periods to find out what we want to do in college. 40 .
    A.Our school offers many classes
B.We should find out what we are good at
C.I’ve avoided anything related to art since then
D.Instead, many are on their phones and talking
E.I found out that I have no artistic ability at all
F.Walk out of our comfort zone and try new things
G.The classes we choose can influence us in the future

The continuous knock on the door brought me quickly from my kitchen. I hurried to answer.
We had just moved into the neighbourhood and I couldn’t imagine who it would be. Opening the door, I saw an old man dressed in dirty clothing. From his hand hung a torn plastic (塑料制的) bag.
“Can I help you?” I asked, hoping he had the wrong address.
“Would you like to buy some fresh garden vegetables?” he said.
“Are they from your garden?” Looking inside his bag, I saw mostly dirt, with several carrots.
“Yes.” His voice was soft. “And I can get some apples from a tree in my yard. Would you like some of those too?”
My heart softened, and I wondered if he really needed the bit of money he was asking for his produce.
I asked him in. “Please step inside and I’ll get my wallet.”
The next day, he knocked at our door again. This time, my little four-year-old Heidi got there first. “Oh, hello. Would you like to come in for tea?”
Without hesitating, the old man stepped inside and held out a broken basket with several apples resting at the bottom.
“You might like to make a pie,” he said.
There was no mistaking the wistful (渴望的) look in his eye.
We sat at the kitchen table and drank our tea. Great excitement at hosting a visitor was obvious in my three children’s never-ending stream of questions. “What is your name? Where do you live? Why are your clothes so dirty?”
The homeless-looking man laughed as he answered each question. His name was Mr. Locket and he lived around the corner. His wife had passed away several years before, and his children lived far away. He was lonely. His need for companionship ( 交往) had sent him door to door under the ruse (计策) of selling fruit and vegetables. Ours was the only door opened to him that day.
Finally, the cookies were gone and he rose to his feet. On his way to the door, he turned and offered us a cheerful smile and a wave goodbye. He had promised to return tomorrow, and I knew what I wanted to do.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

    66.                                                                                     Music Changes Life
Good morning, my name is Li Hua. It’s an honor to be here and to share with you the story of how music has had an impact on my life.
There was a time when I felt greatly depressed because I moved and was thrown into a totally different world. So lonely was I that I drowned myself to music. Gradually I got familiar with different musicians and their works. Then one day our teacher asked us to discuss music in class. For the first time I raised my hand. Miraculously, many boys and girls came to me praising my knowledge of music after that class. They also began to invite me to their homes and parties. Thus, not only did music help me cope with loneliness then but also brought me opportunities to open the gate of a new life.
       That’s all. Thank you.
    67.One possible version:
The next day, the children excitedly waited for his visit. The table was set with cups and dishes. The delicious smell of apple pies filled the house. As he entered the kitchen, his eyes filled with tears. Pulling up a chair, he immediately seemed at home, and we watched with amazement as he ate up half the pies. “Your pies taste a lot better than mine!” he commented. I smiled and offered him a few tips on making pies.
The next day, we found a basket sitting on the step. Inside were several rosy apples. I made another pie that night. As the days passed, Mr. Locket became a daily visitor to our active home. In his quiet and gentle way, he made himself popular with each child. I loved to look around the kitchen door and watch as he sat in our big chair with my children beside him, looking up at him with full attention as he read a children’s book or told a story.

M: Ruth, I have got this terrible cold, and I have to see a doctor. I am afraid I can’t go to the class. Could you help me hand in my lab report to Doctor Davidson?
W: Sure, no problem. Just take care of yourself, and don’t worry about the class.
    Tex3:
M: Hurry up with your food, Sally. They say there is a big storm coming. We’d better get home before that.
W: OK, I’m done. Let’s get back to the car. Could you carry these shopping bags?
    M: Oh, sure.
    Text4:
M :Excuse me, Madam. I can’t find my umbrella.
W : Are you sure you looked for it carefully?
M : There are many things waiting for me to deal with, so I’m in a hurry! Your attitude made me confused. Next time I don’t think I’ll go into your shop.
    Text5:
M: This is Mr. Baker’s office. To be a good secretary, you must be quite familiar with office routine.
W: Okay. I’ll get familiar with relevant work as soon as possible.
    Text6:
W: Can we get two ice screams? I’m a little hungry now.
M : We have some at home, in the fridge. Can’t you wait?
W :No. Anyway, I just need something to eat just now.
M : Oh, you are so greedy! I think I’m nowhere near to stop you. While you’re choosing what to eat on the second floor, I’ll look for cheese and peanuts on the third floor.
W: Okay... Is there anything else we need?
M : I want to buy a bottle of cooking oil. We are going to run out of it soon.
    Text7:
M: Have you heard the news?
    W: What news?
M: Colin fell and broke his leg on holiday. His teacher had to drive him home and he’s going to be off school for eight weeks.
W: Oh no, poor Colin. He’s been away for two weeks, hasn’t he? I was expecting him to be back next week.
M: Yes, it happened on the last day of his holiday.
W: He’ll fall behind with his schoolwork.
M: His teacher said he’d send him some homework to do. His classmates have sent him a card as well.
W: I think we should go to visit him at home.
    Text8:
M: Here with us is Marsha Ward, who is a best-selling author in Britain. Welcome, Marsha. Please, tell us something about your new book.
W: Certainly. Did you know that more than a million children in Britain every year require hospital treatment for accidents that happen at home?
M: Really? I had no idea that the number is that high.
W: Yes. And almost all of those accidents could have been prevented. Parents can prevent children from falling down the stairs by setting up safety gates. They can use mats in the bedrooms to prevent children from slipping on floors.
M: Is the bathroom the most dangerous room in the house?
W: No, the most dangerous room by far is the kitchen.
M: OK. Now it is a good time to answer some of our listeners’ questions. Hello, line 1…
    Text9:
W: Wow, I would give anything to be more like Audrey Hepburn.
M: I never really understood why so many girls are such big fans of her.
W: Well, she had such a classic elegance about her because she spent years training as a ballet dancer before becoming an actress.
M: Why didn’t she stick to dancing as a career?
W: It seems it was fate. She suffered from inadequate nutrition during the war, and therefore, a career as a professional dancer would have been too demanding on her body. So she focused on acting instead. Roman Holiday was her first big break which made her a star.
M: I see the photo of her in that black dress everywhere.
W: No, that one is Breakfast At Tiffany’s. Her character in that film is very outgoing and lovely, even though in real life, Audrey always described herself as shy and quiet.
M: So what did she do after her acting career?
W: She devoted much of her life to helping children in need. Her family received international aid during the war when she was growing up. I think that left a big impression on her.
    Text10:
M: People can’t imagine life without water. Without it, the earth we live on would be a dead one. There would be no trees, no crops, no animals and no people. So water is considered to be next to oxygen in importance.
Although nearly three quarters of the earth’s surface is covered with water, most of it is seawater which is undrinkable. The demand for water is increasing, but water resources are in short supply. Agricultural production needs enormous amounts of water , so does industry. Besides, the rapid growth of population makes it more and more difficult for people to survive because of the water shortage. More than half of the world’s population lives in water-stressed areas and, according to the United Nations, that number will increase to two-thirds by 2025. So water shortage has become one of the most serious problems.
Fortunately, people have realized this pressing problem and are trying to find ways to solve it. First, people are urged to use less water. Second, measures are taken to protect water resources. Third, circulating water is used for industrial purposes over and over in factories and treated sewage water is used for irrigation in farming land.
