Eating, probably one of the most-important parts of the day and probably one of things that change most when moving to another country. In Oaxaca, Mexico, adapting to eating patterns can take a while.
The first few months of living here I enjoyed eating Mexican food. I quickly learnt that big lunches and small dinners were the Mexican way and I kinda liked it. It made sense. As the months wore on I desired cooking and with it I desired the ingredients I knew and loved.
Oaxaca is known for its fantastic food and the food really is mind-blowing, but the problem for me was variety. I am from London, a city where you can eat food from a different country every day of the week, I was spoilt when it came to choice. I began to instruct friends and family who visited to bring Thai curry paste, sweet chili sauce, Indian curry sauces and gravy to make the perfect English Roast dinner.
For quite a while Oaxacan food lost its charm and the thought of cooking Mexican food was just too annoying. I would start to think about dinner at 5 just as my local market was shut and I would realize I had no ingredients and no means of getting any unless I took a long journey to the supermarket. It sounds like a strange thing to pet concerned about but I really think it was one of the biggest changes that I faced moving to Oaxaca.
However, just as I hit the two-year mark, things changed. I guess somehow I stopped fighting things and I began to adapt to the Oaxaca market food way of life. I shopped regularly for the freshest ingredients. I knew what was in season and I cooked accordingly. I started to realize just how super lucky I was to be able to eat fresh, locally sourced, seasonable food on my own doorstep. What started as culture shock turned into an improved way of living!
4. What did the author think of Mexican food for the first few months?
A. Boring. B. Amazing. C. Spicy. D. Simple.
5. Why Did the author ask her friends and family to bring her food?
A. She wanted to save money. B. She couldn’t afford Mexican food.
C. She was spoilt by her family. D. She wanted to eat various foods.
6. What do we know about the author in paragraph 4?
A. She preferred shopping in the supermarket.
B. She was concerned about strange things.
C. Everyday cooking disturbed her quit a lot.
D. Food held little appeal for her.
7. What does the story tell us?
A. If you can’t beat them, join them.
B. Where there is a will there is a way.
C. Food brings people together on many different levels.
D. It is never too late to learn.

根据第三段的“Oaxaca is known for its fantastic food and the food really is mind-blowing, but the problem for me was variety. I am from London, a city where you can eat food from a different country every day of the week, I was spoilt when it came to choice. I began to instruct friends and family who visited to bring Thai curry paste, sweet chili sauce, Indian curry sauces and gravy to make the perfect English Roast dinner.(瓦哈卡以其美味的食物而闻名,那里的食物真的令人兴奋,但对我来说,问题是食物的多样性。我来自伦敦,在那里你每天都可以吃到来自不同国家的食物,说到选择我被宠坏了。我开始指导来访的朋友和家人带泰式咖喱酱、甜辣椒酱、印度咖喱酱和肉汁来制作完美的英式烤肉晚餐)”可知,来自伦敦的作者习惯了食物的多样性,所以请朋友们带来各种食材,实现作者对于多种食物的需求。故选D项。
【6题详解】

C
When Thomas Edison hit a wall with his inventions, he would nap in an armchair while holding a steel ball. As he started to fall asleep and his muscles relaxed, the ball would strike the floor, waking him with insights into his problems.
To see whether Edison was right, researchers recruited more than 100 easy sleepers. The team gave them a math test. The volunteers weren’t told that there was an easier way to get the right answers by following a hidden rule. Those who didn’t find the rule after 30 trials took a 20-minute break resting in a chair in a dark room with their eyes closed. Each held a plastic bottle in their right hand while the researchers recorded their brain activity. They were also told to report aloud what was in their minds if they let the bottle fall. Most of those who napped reported various visions: dancing numbers and different shapes, the Roman Colosseum, a hospital room with a horse. After the break, the participants went back to complete the math problems.
The researchers didn’t see any connection between the content of peopled visions and their performance on the task. But looking at brain activity, they found that those who napped and were awakened during the first stage of sleep were three times better at finding the hidden key to the problem than those who remained awake. The creative effect happened even for people who spent just 15 seconds in the first sleep stage. But the trick didn’t work for those who reached later stages of sleep.
Contrary to the Edison tale, the magic moment didn’t come immediately after waking in this study. People took on average 94 trials of the math test after the nap to have an insight. “It is not like you can take a power nap and wake up with a solution right away.” Oudiette says, a sleep researcher at the Paris Brain Institute. Her team has already planned an experiment to help people reach a creative zone by monitoring their brain waves in real time. “Edison was somewhat right,” she says, “and now we have a lot more to explore.”
8. What does the underlined words “hit a wall” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Feel painful. B. Get satisfied.
C. Become breathless. D. Stop making any progress.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How visions and creativity are related. B. Who performed better in the test.
C. How the research was conducted. D. Who took part in the test.
10. The trick is more likely to work on ______.
A. a man who sleeps more than 15 seconds
B. a man who is easy to wake up
C. a man who wakes up during the first sleep stage
D. a man who sleeps deep
11. What was Oudiette’s attitude towards Edison’s trick?
A. Favorable. B. Unconcerned.
C. Doubtful. D. Worried.
D 9. C 10. C 11. A
根据第一段“As he started to fall asleep and his muscles relaxed, the ball would strike the floor, waking him with insights into his problems. (当他开始入睡,肌肉放松时,球会击中地板,唤醒他,让他产生顿悟。)”可知,Thomas Edison的发明陷入困境时,他会握着钢球睡一觉。当他开始入睡,肌肉放松时,球会击中地板,唤醒他,让他产生顿悟。故推知hit a wall指的是Thomas Edison的发明“无法取得进展,陷入困境”,与Stop making any progress意义一致,故选D。
根据第二段“To see whether Edison was right, researchers recruited more than 100 easy sleepers.
根据第三段“But looking at brain activity, they found that those who napped and were awakened during the first stage of sleep were three times better at finding the hidden key to the problem than those who remained awake. (但是观察大脑活动,他们发现那些在睡眠的第一阶段打盹并被唤醒的人在找到问题隐藏的关键方面比那些保持清醒的人好三倍。)”可知,这个技巧更适用于在第一阶段醒来的人。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Edison was somewhat right,” she says, “and now we have a lot more to explore.”(她说:“爱迪生在某种程度上是对的,现在我们还有很多东西要探索。)”可知,Oudiette认为Edison的技巧可能是正确的,对Edison的技巧是支持的态度,故选A。
D
I know that I shall meet my fate
Somewhere among the clouds above;
Those that I fight I do not hate,
Those that I guard I do not love;
My country is Kiltartan Cross,
My countrymen Kiltartan’s poor,
No likely end could bring them loss
Or leave them happier than before.
Nor law, nor duty bade me fight,
Nor public men, nor cheering crowds,
A lonely impulse of delight
Drove to this tumult in the clouds;
I balanced all, brought all to mind,
The years to come seemed waste of breath,
A waste of breath the years behind
In balance with this life, this death.
This poem by W. B Yeats is rather a thought-provoking poem on Major Robert Gregory, who was the son of one of Yeats’s friends. Robert Gregory was killed in Italy during the First World War in 1918. The poem was written during the First World War (1914-1919) when many Irish men fought for the cause of Englishmen. The poem is taken from the collection The Wild Swans At Coole. During the first World War, Ireland was a part of “Great Britain”. It became a separate nation later inl922. Therefore, when Gregory died, he actually died for the “English”, not for the “Irish”.
The pilot sees his forthcoming death yet he does- not seem regretful or scared but rather accepts the fate he is going to encounter. He clearly states that it is not any obligation for the country nor the inspiring speeches of the leaders or the cheering of the crowds that encourage him to fight in the battlefield. It is simply the thrill of the battlefield or adventure that pushes him to take up the job of an airman. He does not hate or love his enemies or his allies(盟友); his country will neither be benefited nor hurt by any outcome of the war. His past life seems a waste while his future life promises to be the same and his death will balance out his life. He feels that only death in war can balance his life of dullness. This is reflected in the line, “A waste of breath the years behind/In balance with this life, this death.”
This poem is recited in first-person. The poet is recounting the thoughts that are going through the airman’s mind as his death approaches. This choice of active voice is important because it gives all insight into the thoughts of the airman fighting on the edge of death. It is the poet who is imagining these thoughts.
12. What can we learn about the poem from paragraph 1?
A. The poem was written after the First World War.
B. The poem was requested by one of the poet’s friends.
C. The poem belongs to a collection.
D. The poem was written for the English.
13. Which of the following can best describe the airman?
A. Patriotic. B. Adventurous. C. Scared. D. Life loving.
14. At the end of this passage, the author might continue to write about______.
A. the voice of the poet
B. other poems of the poet
C. other poetic techniques used in the poem
D. the conversation between the poet and the airman
15. Which of the following is the best title of the poem?
A. An Irish Airman Foresees His Death B. The Irish Guarding the English
C. Dying a Painful Death D. Fighting for Kiltartan Cross

根据最后一段“This poem is recited in first-person. The poet is recounting the thoughts that are going through the airman’s mind as his death approaches. This choice of active voice is important because it gives all insight into the thoughts of the airman fighting on the edge of death. It is the poet who is imagining these thoughts.(这首诗用第一人称朗诵。诗人正在叙述那名飞行员在死亡临近时脑子里的想法。这种主动语态的选择是很重要的,因为它能让我们全面了解在死亡边缘战斗的飞行员的想法。是诗人在想象这些想法。)”可知,这一段谈论的是那首诗以第一人称的口吻表述,属于诗歌的一个技巧,作者可能还要就诗歌其他的技巧继续点评这首诗。故选C项 。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段最后一句“Therefore, when Gregory died, he actually died for the ‘English', not for the ‘Irish’.(因此,格列高利死后,他实际上是为‘英格兰人’,而不是为‘爱尔兰人’而死)”可知,诗中描述的这位飞行员是爱尔兰人,第二段第一句“The pilot sees his forthcoming death yet he does- not seem regretful or scared but rather accepts the fate he is going to encounter. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Practice Energy-Efficient Cooking
The eco-friendly kitchen begins with eating green, but it doesn’t end there.____16____ A few simple adaptations to your cooking methods can be a major step to a greener kitchen overall.
Stop Preheating.
____17____ Many newer ovens come to temperature so rapidly that they make preheating almost out of date. If you’re roasting or baking something that’s a little flexible when it comes to cooking time, you can put it in right away, then turn the oven off five or ten minutes early, and let dishes finish cooking in the remaining heat.
____18____
Making as best use of the oven as possible-cooking more than one thing at once, for instance, is also wise. For small dishes, using a toaster oven, or reheating in a microwave will also save energy; in fact, Energy Star estimates that you can reduce cooking energy by as much as 80 percent when using the microwave instead of the oven.
Use Stoves Efficiently
When cooking on the stove, using a properly sized pot for each of the stove burners also makes a difference; on an electric stove, for example, a 6-inch pot used on an 8-mch burner wastes more than 40 percent of the burner’s heat.____19____, and then use them whenever possible, including when you’re bringing boiled water up to temperature, which helps reducing cooking time and keeps beat where it belongs-in the pan.
Try a Pressure Cooker
Pressure cookers are another great way to save energy, reducing cooking time by up to 70 percent.
Eat Raw
Of course, the most energy-efficient cooking means leaving heat out altogether.____20____ There’s a large culture growing around the idea of raw food-don’t be afraid to try something new!
A. Limit Oven Use.
B. Invest in Long-Lasting Cookware.
C. Preheating is almost prehistoric.
D. Make sure all of your pots and pans have close-fitting lids.
E. Many popular cooking techniques use energy that isn’t needed.
F Make sure you can consume what you purchase and produce.
G. Don’t forget about salads, chilled soups, and other dishes that can be eaten cold.
E 17. C 18. A 19. D 20. G
根据“The eco-friendly kitchen begins with eating green, but it doesn’t end there.”(生态友好型厨房始于吃的绿色健康,但绝对不止于这里。)
根据“Many newer ovens come to temperature so rapidly that they make preheating almost out of date.”(许多新的炉子升温是很快地以至于做预热几乎已经过时了)以及小标题“Stop Preheating”(停止预热)可知,这一段讲的是让人们不要再提前预热以至于浪费资源。
根据“in fact, Energy Star estimates that you can reduce cooking energy by as much as 80 percent when using the microwave instead of the oven.”(事实上,能源明星估算你可以减少80%的做饭使用的能源当你使用微波炉而不是炉子。)
根据后文“you’re bringing boiled water up to temperature, which helps reducing cooking time and keeps beat where it belongs-in the pan.”(你把煮沸的水达到一定温度,这能帮助减少做饭的时间并且保持原本属于锅里的温度)可知,我们需要一个东西保持锅里的温度,那么就需要盖子,而选择D“Make sure all of your pots and pans have close-fitting lids.”(确保你所有的锅盆都有能紧密合适的盖子)正好包含我们所需要的“盖子”,故选D。
G“Don’t forget about salads, chilled soups, and other dishes that can be eaten cold.”(不要忘记沙拉,冷汤和其他食物是可以被冷吃的。)

Every year, Tia Vargas and her dad go hiking: this summer’s trip was up Table Rock in the Grand Tetons in early July. Vargas was just below the 11, 000-foot peak with her dad waiting about a mile down the trail (路线) when she ran into a family of hikers who had found an injured English springer spaniel (斯宾格猎犬).
They couldn’t find the limping (跛的) pup’s owner and, because the family were hiking with kids, Vargas figured it would be easier for her to carry the pup to safety.
“I had to crawl under him to get him up on my shoulders,” Vargas, a single mother of three from Idaho Falls, Idaho, tells MNN. “I felt the difficulty of it right away. I never felt 55 pounds like that before.” Vargas soon ran into her dad, Ted Kasper, who snapped some photos when he saw his daughter coming down the trail with a dog on her shoulders. “Dad laughed and said. ‘Isn’t this hike hard enough? You have to carry a dog too?’” Vargas recalls. “My dad makes me laugh. He is such a great man.”
That sense of humor helped Vargas get through the hard journey of carrying the heavy dog down the steep trail, she says. The trip was hard and nearly unbearable at times. “Every time I put him down to rest, it was difficult. And every time I got down on my knees to put my head under his belly and try to use neck and body strength to lift him it was painful and difficult. I thought we would see people on the trail on the way down to help. But that wasn’t the case.” she says.
Paragraph 1:
The group of three got lost once because of the fallen trees that made the trail disappear.

Paragraph 2:
Finally hiking six miles and reaching the bottom of the trail, Vargas found a very small note that said, “Lost dog named Boomer, call this number.”

The group of there got lost once because of the fallen trees that made the trail disappear. What was worse, it started to drizzle. However, they couldn’t wait for the rain to stop because it was getting dark and the dog was whining and obviously in pain, so they inched their way down the slippery slope while looking for the trail. Fortunately, it wasn’t long before they got back on track and the sky cleared up. “Thank God. It didn’t rain cats and dogs, but a dog,” Kasper said jokingly. “At one point, the thought of giving up crossed my mind. My legs hurt and were shaking but my dad’s jokes and the dog’s watery eyes gave me strength,” Vargas recalls.
Finally hiking six miles and reaching the bottom of the trail, Vargas found a very small note that said, “Lost dog named Boomer, call this number.” On their way to the vet, she called the owners, who thought for sure Boomer was dead. They had gone hiking together the day before and Boomer had fallen off a cliff. The family rushed down to look for him until dark but in vain. When they found out that Boomer was still alive, they were so blissful that they drove to the vet without delay. To their relief, Boomer only had a dislocated joint and was in a cast. The owners also told Vargas that they were moving to another city because of work and couldn’t take Boomer with them. With a brilliant smile on her face, Vargas stroked Boomer’s head and asked if it would like to go home with her. Boomer licked her hand gently, wagging its tail. This downhill battle turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
