From learning about protecting wild animals and natural habitats to reading about the effects of recycling, books are perfect for showing people how to get involved. Here are four of such books.
Tall Trees
Describing the wildlife that lives in Northern California’s redwood forests, it turns story time into a counting lesson as readers count all the creatures in the forests. Readers will also love remembering Tony Frederick’s playful poetry about the animals of the forest.
Save the Bees
Bethany Stahl has a whole series of “Save the...” books, and they all have great lessons for readers. The explanations are fun and perfect for animal lovers who want to learn how to make a difference. On her website, she even has links to free books, which are great resources for parents or teachers.
My Friend Earth
The message of this book, written by Patricia MacLachlan, is beautiful and simple, encouraging kids to learn about Earth and all that it does. It has acute die-cut (模切) design, which is fun for little hands to explore, although those under 4 might need some help. It covers a wide range of topics and will help kids gain an appreciation for everything from rain and wind to bears and birds.
Thank You, Earth
The author of this book, April Pulley Sayre, has written many award-winning books, and this one is truly special. It was written in a letter format (格式), thanking Earth for so many great natural moments. You’ll find beautiful pictures in this book.

They already guide blind and disabled people; now dogs are to be trained to help people with dementia (痴呆) or Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s can make people confuse night and day or forget basic things such as washing or drinking enough water.
The dogs will be trained to respond to sound triggers (触发器) in the home that cause them to perform tasks. The duties will include reminding their owners to take medicine, as well as encouraging them to eat, drink and sleep regularly.
The idea was developed by design students at the Glasgow School of Art and will now be put into practice by Alzheimer’s Scotland and Dogs for the Disabled. The first dogs will be distributed to four Scottish couples, where one of the partners is in the early stages of dementia. Some 670,000 people in Britain have dementia and one in three over 65 will develop the condition. By 2021 this is expected to rise to one million.
Joyce Gray of Alzheime’s Scotland said, “People in the early stages of dementia are still able to live a relatively normal life, and dogs help to maintain routine.” Another advantage of using the pets as companions is that dogs can give them a sense of silent support and companionship. Ms Gray said, “The evidence is that people may forget familiar faces but not pets. It’s such a strong bond that people often remember them longest. People don’t need to communicate verbally (言语地) but they can still interact. You can have a speechless bond.
Helen McCain, director of Dogs for the Disabled, said, “People with dementia often forget to take the medicine. If a dog presents them with a bag with pills in it there’s a greater chance of them taking it. The dog would also encourage the owner to take them out for walks, ensuring they keep exercising and interacting with other people.”
24.In Britain people with dementia ______.
A.are likely to increase in number.
B.are mostly over 65 years old.
C.will be trained to respond to sound triggers.
D.will be able to live a relatively normal life.
25.The dogs are taught to perform tasks by ______.
A.making some sound signals. B.communicating with the patients.
C.reminding the patients by barking. D.reacting to some sound triggers.
26.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Faces. B.Triggers. C.Pets. D.Companion.
27.What is mainly talked about in the passage?
A.The idea of dementia dogs was developed by students.
B.Dogs are trained to assist Alzheimer’s patients.
C.British people with Alzheimer’s are in poor condition.
D.The dementia dogs perform most duties of a doctor.

Have you ever seen one of the many videos of an elephant grabbing a paintbrush, putting it in paint, and producing a painting similar to something a 5-year-old could create? While watching an elephant paint is an amazing sight, we can’t help but wonder whether the training methods and results reflect animal cruelty.
A 2014 study on four captive (圈养的) Asian elephants at the Melbourne Zoo in Australia sought to identify stress-related behaviors around the activity of painting. While the researchers found that the elephants had a neutral response to painting—not stressful, nor enriching—it seemed that when an elephant was not selected to paint, it displayed non-interactive behavior. This is seen as a possible signal of stress in the animals.
In addition, PETA, a famous animal rights group, has cited several American zoos that use harmful training methods to get elephants to paint, perform tricks, play instruments, and more. Not every zoo that organizes elephant painting uses aggression (攻击) to encourage the elephants. However, PETA argues that animal shelters should not force animals to do tricks at all.
Activist organizations warn that elephants can undergo extreme discomfort in the training process. Furthermore, many of the painting elephants are very young, at an age where they should still be with their mothers. It raises questions about whether there’s a chance they were caught for the express purpose of performing, or if they could somehow be restored to a return to the wild.
It is difficult to support any kind of trained behavior that differs greatly from a wild animal’s natural tendencies. The role of a shelter, ideally, is to allow an animal to live as close to its normal life as possible, perhaps with an eye to returning the animal to the wild; teaching them to paint does not seem to align with that target, particularly if it’s not a learned behavior that the animal would be willing to do independently.
28.What can be safely concluded from the 2014 study?
A.Researchers didn’t collect solid evidence.
B.Painting promoted elephants’ interaction.
C.Negative effects of painting were confirmed.
D.Elephants made strong responses to painting.
29.What is a concern of activist organizations?
A.Complexity of the training process. B.Purposes of elephants’ performance.
C.Daily activities of captive elephants. D.Potential for elephants’ return to nature.
30.What does the underlined phrase “align with” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Wander off. B.Set up. C.Consist with. D.Go against.
31.What might be the best title for the text?
A.How PETA Helps? B.Why Animal Rights? C.Should Elephants Paint? D.Should Elephants live in captivity?
D
I READ mostly fiction before I was introduced to CaMalcolm Gladwell's work.
In his TED talk called "Choice, Happiness, and Spaghetti Sauce (意大利面酱)", he used the examples of Pepsi and spaghetti sauce to argue that giving people choices makes them happy. If I had only heard his conclusion statement and missed the evidence that he employed, I would have been wondering how he could argue such an interesting point. But he structured his argument like a detective story, with each puzzle piece contributing to the conclusion.
Fascinated, I borrowed his book Outliers: The Story of Success from the library. Each chapter had its own story and argument, and all of the arguments were about factors that contributed to an individual’s success in the world.
The depth of his research was amazing. In the first chapter, he analyzed the reasons behind the crash of Korean Air Flight 801 in 1997, which killed more than 220 people. The disaster took place partly because the co-pilot didn’t point out the mistakes that the pilot was making. In South Korea, it’s disrespectful to disagree with higher ups even if they are doing something wrong.
Perhaps most interesting of all, Gladwell explained why Asians are so good at math. He said Asians get an advantage when they learn how to count because their language has fewer syllables (音节) and makes numbers easier to remember.
But Gladwell is mostly interested in answering my favorite question, "Why?” And that’s exactly why I love his works. After reading Outliers: The Story of Success and other books like it, I found myself questioning my commonly-accepted beliefs much more often. After all, why should we take anything for granted?
32.Why does the author write this article?
A.To promote some of Gladwell’s books.
B.To introduce Gladwell and his books.
C.To show how Gladwell did research for his books.
D.To explain why he enjoys Gladwell’s books.
33.How did the author feel about Gladwell’s TED talk?
A.Surprising but persuasive. B.Refreshing but puzzling.
C.Interesting but doubtful. D.Funny but conclusive.
34.What can we know from the passage?
A.Eating spaghetti sauce can make you happy.
B.Carelessness caused the Korean air crash in 1997.
C.Fewer syllables give Asians an advantage in learning math.
D.The Story of Success is about Gladwell’s personal success.
35.What really makes the author fall in love with Gladwell’s works?
A.His strong arguments.
B.His amazing research.
C.His detective-like stories.
D.His questioning spirit.
As soon as you come into contact with a new environment, chances are you will be hit with culture shock. 36 I’d like to share my own past experiences and offer you some suggestions on how to overcome it and adjust to life as a freshman in the UK.
When I first arrived at university, I was a few weeks late due to some flight issues. I had never been to the UK before and I was extremely scared; everything seemed different. Culture shock was inevitable (不可避免) as I found it difficult to adjust to different aspects of UK society. Language, accents, mannerisms and even the food caught me off guard to start with. One of the effective ways to overcome it is to try and be open-minded. 37
Since I was a new international student, my biggest concern was standing out amongst a completely different culture. Unfortunately, this led to me keeping to myself and not truly coming to terms with my new surroundings. 38 University life can be difficult at the beginning and many people around you understand this. You’d be amazed how much people will be willing to help you. If you don’t ask any questions, you’re not going to get any answers.
39 This is particularly better if you are alongside other students who are also in the same boat, as you can go through the process together. Making friends at university is very important, especially at the beginning. 40 Making friends not only makes it easier to deal with but also goes a long way towards improving your social skills that will benefit your university experience as a whole.
A.Time and habit can help deal with culture shock.
B.The feeling is intense at the beginning of a stay abroad.
C.If there is one thing I wish I did more of, it would be asking questions.
D.Culture shock has less of an effect if you are with people around you.
E.Treat everything new as a chance to gain knowledge about the culture.
F.You’ll learn to understand the world through your host culture’s eyes.
G.It is a relief to know that you are not the only one suffering from culture shock.

“Be present.” This is the slogan of mindfulness meditation and a supposed key to self-awareness and acceptance. In any type of mindfulness exercise, the goal is to perform routine activities with a 41 sense of attention.
Although mindfulness has its advantages, psychological research has also revealed that in some circumstances it’s important to be 42 . That is, as we develop skill in complex tasks, we can perform them with increasing facility until attention seems to be 43 . Everyday examples range from riding a bike to chopping cucumbers to brushing your teeth.
Forming this state of “automaticity” are mental processes that can be executed without paying attention to them. These processes proceed without conscious 44 . We don’t perform all tasks automatically, but many can be performed this way once they are well 45 .
To be clear, paying attention is important when learning a new skill. But research has also revealed that paying too much attention to what you’re doing can have 46 effects, particularly when you perform well-practised skills. In fact, this is one reason why some experts appear to “choke (窒息) under 47 ”: They think too much about the mechanics of the task at hand.
In a classic study, cognitive scientist Sian Beilock and her colleagues had skilled golfers attempt to sink putts (推球入洞) under different experimental conditions. In one scheme, the golfers were simply 48 to pay attention to the swing of their club (球杆) and say “stop” when they finished their swing. In another condition, they were directed to listen for a target sound while 49 other noises and say the word “tone” when they heard the target sound.
50 , the skilled golfers performed considerably worse when they focused on their swing than when they paid attention to irrelevant sounds. The effect of paying attention to their swing was so damaging that when they were warming up before the 51 began, the golfers actually did better.
Focusing too carefully on the 52 of well-practised motor sequences (运动序列) can cause mistakes, which is the important message from this research. 53 , we should not resign to go through life on autopilot, missing opportunities to make deeper connections with ourselves, one another and our environment. But there are situations where we should let automaticity 54 .
The next time you ride a bike or join in a sport, don’t 55 it.

I’ll never forget that hot and windy day when I passed my driving test. The instructor just told me that I passed and he was talking to me about my test as I was full of smiles. I looked over at my dad and he was staring at(盯着) his phone with a strange look. And then the instructor and I went on with our own business.
“Excuse me sir, but I must take this call …” my father rudely cut in. I was so embarrassed because there were signs all over the DMV (车管局) office that read: CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF. He opened his phone and said, “Hello?” The look on his face was unforgettable as he turned so white. I knew something was wrong. My first thought was that someone was in the hospital or had died. Although no one had died, little did I know that the phone call was going to change my life forever.
The call was from the North Middleton Fire Department and they told my father that he needed to get to the house as soon as possible. My dad was about to shut his phone when suddenly I heard my old sister on the phone. All I could hear was her crying crazily and shouting “Fire”! I had one thought going through my head at that moment, and it was her son, Tom.
Did my sister get him out of the house in time? He was only six months old and I loved him more than anything in the world. We ran out of the DMV office both in complete shock. My dad was driving anxiously and quickly. At this point I didn’t even know how to prepare myself. The thought of my house burning to the ground didn’t seem to be real. I kept telling my dad it probably wasn’t even that bad and to stop driving like a crazy man.
The drive from the DMV office to my house is only a fifteen-minute drive, but it felt like forever. Finally, we were half a mile away from the house.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;

M: I need a new phone and I think I might buy a Chinese one
W: But you always had American phones in the past.
M: Yes. But I trust Chinese ones. More and more people use them. They are reliable and fast.
W: And cheap, of course.
M: Yes, that’s the main thing. They cost far less than even the Korean ones.
W: I hear they are not as good if you want to play games or watch movies on them.
M: It depends on which one you get. If you buy a more expensive one, it will obviously have more functions.
W: I really don’t understand why anyone would want to watch a movie on a phone or play a game for that matter
M: Well, I used to think like that. But when you are on a long journey, say on a subway or a bus, it is sometimes nice to have something to do other than reading.
W: Is that how you use them?

W: At the local community center. I’m really enjoying it.
M: What kind of dance are you learning?
W: We’re learning a few different types of dance. So far, we have learned ballet, modern, and tap. Of all the types, tap dance is my favorite. Ballet is pretty hard.
M: Sounds like a lot of fun. My sister Shelley is thinking of joining you in your class, but l fear it’s already full. Besides, she fears she may be too old to learn dance lessons. She’s fifteen, though.
W: No, our class isn’t full. You can schedule a time for her to come to one of our classes. The first visit is free. We have our lessons every Monday evening at 7 pm.

M: Pippa, I’ve just got your message. I’m sorry. When are you leaving? W: Today. Actually, I’ve just finished clearing my desk. M: Have they paid you for this month? W: Yes, they have. M: I understand. W: Guess what? I’ve just opened an e-mail from Ed Burrows in Cardiff … M: Oh, yes? W: He says he might have a job for me. M: Wow, news travels fast. Have you phoned him yet? W: No. I need some time to think about what I want to do. I’ve just been on the Internet looking for a cheap holiday. Uh-oh, here comes the boss. I have to go. I’ll call you later, Bye. M: Bye.
18.B 19.A 20.C
W: Good morning, everybody. My name is Jane Brown. Today I’d like to talk about myself. I’m 32 years old and I have just finished my first week at university. As well as attending lectures regularly, I have had to learn to read books quickly and write long papers. I decided to go to university after 14 years away from the high-school classroom. As a secretary, although I was earning a reasonable amount of money, I was bored with doing something where I hardly had to think. I wanted to be one of the students at the local university, who looked happy and full of hope. However, now that I’ve actually become a student I find it hard to mix with younger classmates. Unlike most eighteen-year-olds, I much prefer a weekend with my books to one out partying. Then there are the normal student benefits of long holidays and theater and cinema discounts. I hope that continuing my education at this late date has been a wise choice.

通读全文,尤其是第一段的“They already guide blind and disabled people; now dogs are to be trained to help people with dementia or Alzheimer’s.(他们已经为盲人和残疾人提供了向导;现在狗被训练来帮助老年痴呆症患者)”可知,本文主要讲的是狗被训练来帮助老年痴呆症患者。故选B。
28.A 29.D 30.C 31.C
根据第二段关键句“While the researchers found that the elephants had a neutral response to painting—not stressful, nor enriching—it seemed that when an elephant was not selected to paint, it displayed non-interactive behavior. This is seen as a possible signal of stress in the animals.”(尽管研究人员发现大象对绘画的反应是中性的——既没有压力,也没有丰富——但当大象没有被选中绘画时,它似乎表现出了非互动行为。 故选A项。
根据倒数第二段关键句“It raises questions about whether there’s a chance they were caught for the express purpose of performing, or if they could somehow be restored to a return to the wild.”(这引发了人们的疑问,它们是否有可能因为表演而被抓住,或者它们是否可以以某种方式回到野外。)
根据画线短语句中“The role of a shelter, ideally, is to allow an animal to live as close to its normal life as possible, perhaps with an eye to returning the animal to the wild”(理想情况下,庇护所的作用是让动物尽可能接近其正常生活,也许是为了让动物回归野外)可知,庇护所的作用是让动物尽可能接近其正常生活,或让动物回归野外,由此可知,教它们画画与这个目标不一致,“Consist with”意为“和……一致”,能够表达画线短语在句中所要表达的意思。故选C项。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段关键句“While watching an elephant paint is an amazing sight, we can’t help but wonder whether the training methods and results reflect animal cruelty.”(虽然观看大象绘画是一个令人惊叹的景象,但我们不禁怀疑训练方法和结果是否反映了虐待动物的行为。)
32.D 33.A 34.C 35.D

If I had only heard his conclusion statement and missed the evidence that he employed, I would have been wondering how he could argue such an interesting point. But he structured his argument like a detective story, with each puzzle piece contributing to the conclusion.(如果我只是听到他结论的陈述,而错过他使用的例子,我可能会想他是怎样表述这样有趣的道理。 故选A。
He said Asians get an advantage when they learn how to count because their language has fewer syllables (音节) and makes numbers easier to remember.
And that’s exactly why I love his works.
36.B 37.E 38.C 39.D 40.G
36.前文“As soon as you come into contact with a new environment, chances are you will be hit with culture shock.(一旦你接触到一个新的环境,你很可能会受到文化冲击。)”提到进入新环境可能遇到文化冲击,后文“I’d like to share my own past experiences and offer you some suggestions on how to overcome it and adjust to life as a freshman in the UK.(我想和大家分享我过去的经历,并提供一些建议,帮助大家克服这些困难,适应英国大一的生活。)” 中的 abroad与后文中as a freshman in the UK语义一致,并且承上启下,符合题意。故选B项。

If you don’t ask any questions, you’re not going to get any answers.(你会惊讶于有多少人愿意帮助你。
39.后文“This is particularly better if you are alongside other students who are also in the same boat, as you can go through the process together. Making friends at university is very important, especially at the beginning.(如果你和其他同病相怜的学生在一起,你们可以一起经历这个过程,那么这个效果会更好。在大学里交朋友是非常重要的,特别是在刚开始的时候。)”中的“alongside other students”以及“Making friends”可知,该段主要建议“多与别人在一起”。D项“如果你和周围的人在一起,文化冲击的影响就会小一些。”符合题意,适合做中心句。故选D项。
40.该段主要是关于“多与朋友在一起”,根据上文的“This is particularly better if you are alongside other students who are also in the same boat, as you can go through the process together. Making friends at university is very important, especially at the beginning.”(如果你和其他同舟共济的同学在一起,这就更好了,因为你们可以一起完成整个过程。 中的not the only one与“go through the process together”一致。故选G项。

句子主语是Healthy eating along with regular exercise,主语后有介词短语along with,谓语动词应该根据along with前面的主语进行变化,因此谓语单复数应根据healthy eating确定,动名词作主语,谓语动词用单数,故填is。

66.Dear Mike,
I'm writing to tell you that I’ve been a Senior One student. However, I find I have to learn more subjects than in junior high school. We have ten classes a day. Besides, math and English are more difficult. I feel upset about the two subjects. But I'll try my best to study them well. Could you give me some advice about English?
Although it's a little difficult in the beginning, I'm doing all my best to overcome it.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.All we could see was black smoke filling the sky. We jumped out of the car and started running to the house. The police tried to stop my dad, but he zoomed right by them. I attempted to follow him, but the police officer grabbed my arm. “Let go of me. That’s my house!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. Eventually, I caught up with my dad in front of the raging fire and we stood there in surprise. Where is my old sister? I asked myself, starting to seek her without delay.
Suddenly, I found my sister sitting in our neighbor’s yard, without Tom beside her. Seeing the sadness in my eyes, my sister told me that Tom was safe in our neighbor’s house. At that point I didn’t care about all my clothes, jewelry, shoes… I was just relieved to hear my family was safe! As all the ashes of our belongings gently landed on us like snowflakes, we just sat there in silence, grateful for the safety of each other, feeling lucky despite the fire.
