While established by Woodrow Wilson as a holiday in the United States in 1911, the practice of recognizing mothers on a specific day or time of year has spread to more than 40 countries. Here's a look at the various traditions.
France
Mother's Day in France only started in the 1950s. After World War I, it was celebrated on the last Sunday in May, unless it conflicted with the Pentecost(五旬节). If it did, mothers were celebrated on the first Sunday of June. Regardless of the day, a traditional gift is a flower-shaped cake.
Japan
Following WWI, Mother's Day in Japan gained some popularity, and it is now celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Gifts include red or pink carnations(康乃馨) as they symbolize sweetness and purity. Children will often draw pictures of their mothers and present them to mom in addition to preparing dishes that their mothers have taught them.
Sweden
Celebrated on the last Sunday in May, the day isn't all that different from the U. S. version. There's breakfast in bed and homemade cards and the like. One difference is that the Swedish Red Cross collects money by selling red plastic flowers. The money from the flowers goes to mothers and children in need.
Thailand
While all mothers are recognized during Mother's Day in Thailand, the holiday is largely centered on Sirikit, the queen mother of Thailand. Mother's Day is celebrated on her birthday, August 12, and public places and households are decorated with lights and pictures of Sirikit. Flowers like jasmine are popular gifts.
21.What do Japanese children usually do for their mothers on Mother's Day?
A.Buy pictures. B.Cook meals. C.Grow flowers. D.Present cards.

The moment that Jiang Mengnan received the Touching China Person of the Year Award for 2021, she said she most wanted to express her gratitude to her parents. Born in 1992 in Yizhang county, Hunan Province, Jiang’s world has been silent since she was 6 months old, when the drugs she was given damaged her hearing. So, Jiang’s parents, both middle school teachers, taught her to learn vocalization (发声法) and lip reading.
Jiang put her hands on the throats of her parents when they talked and felt the vibration (震动) of the vocal cords (声带) to learn to speak. When reading Pinyin, she carefully looked at the lips of other people’s pronunciations to know the formation of each syllable. Mastering a single word can take at least 1000 practice attempts for Jiang, and different people having differing mouth movements added difficulty to her when it came to lip reading.
Through lip reading and self-study, she was able to keep up with learning and was accepted by Jilin University School of Pharmacy (药剂学) with a high score of 615 on the college entrance examination. In 2018, she was accepted as a PhD candidate at Tsinghua University’s School of Life Sciences.
Because of her hearing loss, she couldn’t be a doctor. Instead, she chose pharmacy to help reduce people’s pain and assist their recovery. More importantly, she is helping inspire disabled children in her native Hunan Province and beyond to struggle for success and challenge the low expectations that society still places on them. Besides, she aims at teaching children in similar situations not to be limited by their disability. As often as she can, Jiang visits special education schools and meets with students. She tells them to do their best to achieve as much as a so-called healthy person.
Jiang’s story is one of victory over adversity. She stressed that people with disabilities have no need to feel discouraged, as they can do the same or even better than non-disabled people around them. When God closes a door, he opens a window, and this girl believes that all challenges are gifts.
24.What caused Jiang to lose her hearing?
A.She had a genetic disease.
B.She took a harmful medicine.
C.She suffered from a high fever.
D.She was injured in a car accident.
25.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The profession Jiang took after graduation.
B.The difficulty Jiang met on her way to success.
C.The main achievements Jiang made despite her disability.
D.The attempts Jiang has made to help the disabled children.
26.What does the underlined word in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Pain. B.Devotion. C.Misfortune. D.Success.
27.Which proverb can best describe Jiang?
A.God helps them who help themselves.
B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.A man can do no more than he can.
D.Well begun is half done.

If you want to take good care of your eyes and vision, I encourage you to adopt the habit of blinking (眨眼) softly as often as possible. Frequent and gentle blinking is important to maintain healthy eyes and good vision because it helps to keep your eyes coated with three beneficial layers (层) of tears.
The first layer of tears lies right up against the whites of your eyes, and provides an even coat of protein-rich moisture (水分) for the second layer to stick to. The middle watery layer helps to wash away foreign dust. It also provides your eyes with minerals, a variety of proteins, and moisture. The third outer layer of tears is somewhat oily. It serves to prevent the middle watery layer from drying quickly, and smooths your eyes.
If your eyes are not regularly coated with the three layers of tears described above, they will be short of moisture and cleaning, and they will be unnecessarily tired.
One of the reasons why many of us don’t blink as often as we should is that we don’t see frequent blinking in mainstream media. Actors and news presenters are typically trained to blink as infrequently as possible, so when we take in most forms of media, our minds learn that it isn’t normal to blink frequently.
To fully support your eyes and vision, it’s best to blink softly every two to four seconds, which translates to about fifteen to thirty blinks per minute. By making an effort to softly blink at this rate, over time, your body will turn your efforts into a habit. If you’re thinking that such frequent blinking will make reading a book or viewing a movie uncomfortable, give it a try and you’ll see right away that it doesn’t take away from these experiences at all.
28.What does the author suggest in the text?
A.Taking good care of our eyes by eye exercises.
B.Closing and opening our eyes frequently and gently.
C.Maintaining healthy eyes to prevent nearsightedness.
D.Crying as often as possible to gain three layers of tears.
29.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The functions of three layers of tears.
B.The causes of three layers of tears.
C.The classification of tears.
D.The importance of the first layer of tears.
30.How does the author think of blinking frequently when reading?
A.Annoying. B.Disagreeable. C.Stupid. D.Harmless.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.Keep Eyes Coated with as Many Layers of Tears as Possible
B.Actors and News Presenters Set Us a Bad Example in Lifestyle
C.Try Frequent Blinking for Healthier Eyes and Better Vision
D.Blinking Lowers the Experiences When Reading or Seeing a Film

For centuries, humans have explored the Earth’s mountains, jungles and deserts. But despite covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface, the ocean is still relatively a mystery. In fact, we know more about the surface of Mars than we learn about the sea floor. However, getting a fuller picture of the ocean would enable us to navigate ships more safely, create more accurate climate models, build offshore wind farms and protect ocean species --- all part of what’s known as the “blue economy”.
Underwater robotic vehicles equipped with sensors are helping gather that data more quickly and more cheaply than ever before. But many of these vehicles rely on batteries with a limited lifespan, and need to return to a boat or the shore to recharge, making it difficult for them to map remoter parts of the sea.
A company called Seatrec is rising to the challenge, founded by oceanographer Yi Chao. While working at NASA, he developed a way to power ocean robots by making use of the naturally occurring temperature disparity of the sea. The power module can be installed on Seatrec’s own floating device. As the float moves between colder and warmer parts of the ocean, the material inside the power module either melts or becomes solid, causing pressure that in turn creates energy and powers the robot’s generator. “The ocean robots can get charged by the sea, so they can extend their lifetime almost indefinitely,” Chao said.
The power module can be placed in existing data-gathering robots. The robot dives a kilometer down to examine the chemistry and the shape of the seabed, using sonar (声呐)to create a map of the surrounding area. The robot returns to the surface to send back its findings by means of satellite.
The technology can extend the reach of data-gathering devices, according to Jamie Phillips, director of the GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project. “One of the huge challenges we have is simply physics: unlike mapping the Earth’s surface where we can use cameras or satellites. At sea, the light can’t go through the water column. So we’re much limited to using sonar systems. Therefore, this technology can help deal with the problem well,” said Jamie.
32.What does Paragraph 1 tell us about ocean exploration?
A.It can be as difficult as space exploration. B.It may do harm to ocean creatures.
C.It is challenging but significant. D.It mainly focuses on mapping the seabed.
33.What’s the problem with underwater robotic vehicles?
A.They fail to gather data rapidly. B.They lack the stable power supply.
C.They can only map shallow waters. D.They work poorly with advanced sensors.
34.What does the underlined word “disparity” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Difference. B.Control. C.Record. D.Range.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Aims of the Seabed 2030 Project B.New power modules for ocean robots
C.The “blue economy” project of Seatrec D.The future of data-gathering ocean robots

Paul’s Birthday Surprise
Paul woke up feeling very happy. Today was his birthday. Paul was now 5 years old. At breakfast, Dad poured some milk into a bowl for Paul and handed him a piece of bread. “See you later, Paul.” Dad said. Dad took his lunch with him in a hurry and ran out the door. Paul ate a bite of bread, feeling upset. Dad always made him a special pancake with delicious chocolate chips. Did Dad forget his birthday?
Paul looked across the table at his baby brother Tom, who was only one year old. He needed help to do everything. Tom banged the table and laughed happily when Mum put some baby food into his mouth. “Mum, can we go to the park today?” Paul asked, with his eyes shining with eagerness. Mum looked over Tom’s head to look out the kitchen window. “I don’t think so,” she said, “it looks like it will rain.” Hearing this, Paul was buried in disappointment. He wanted his birthday to be special and memorable. However, everything wasn’t going in the way as he had expected.
After breakfast, Mum had to give Tom a bath. Tom was an untidy eater, with food and milk sticking to his face and hair. Mum put him in the bath tub and began to scrub (擦洗). She reached for the shampoo (洗发水), but it was empty. “Paul, please come here!” Paul got to the bathroom and Mum handed him Tom’s favorite rubber duck, saying to Paul, “Please play with your little brother until I get a new shampoo bottle.”

Last year I went to the University of Sydney to study education. The nightlife in Sydney was absolutely great. It offered a wide range of night clubs and bars. The local people were very friendly and easy-going. There were also a lot of people from other countries working and living in Sydney.
I travelled a little bit in Australia. I went up the east coast to Frasier Island, which is a world heritage site. And I climbed rocks there. Then I went up to the north. I enjoyed rowing through a rain forest and camping there. The further north I went in Australia, the hotter it was. I saw dogs running along the beach and sharks in the water. I also went diving for the first time. It was a little bit dangerous because I saw a giant shell and touched it. Suddenly it closed up. I almost lost one finger!

根据第一段“Jiang’s world has been silent since she was 6 months old,(从她6个月大的时候起,她的世界就一片寂静)”、第三段“In 2018, she was accepted as a PhD candidate at Tsinghua University’s School of Life Sciences.(2018年,她被清华大学生命科学学院录取为博士研究生)”以及最后一段“Jiang’s story is one of victory over adversity.(江梦南的故事是一个战胜adversity的故事)”可知,江梦南面临逆境,没有放弃努力,最终战胜了逆境。
根据第三段“Through lip reading and self-study, she was able to keep up with learning and was accepted by Jilin University School of Pharmacy with a high score of 615 on the college entrance examination. In 2018, she was accepted as a PhD candidate at Tsinghua University’s School of Life Sciences.(通过唇读和自学,她能够跟上学习进度,并以615分的高分被吉林大学药学院录取。2018年,她被清华大学生命科学学院录取为博士研究生)”以及文章内容可知,江梦南没有放弃自己,一直努力学习研究,最终成为了感动中国年度人物。由此可知,“自助者天助之”这句谚语最能形容江梦南。故选A项。

根据第一段中“If you want to take good care of your eyes and vision, I encourage you to adopt the habit of blinking (眨眼) softly as often as possible.(如果你想好好照顾你的眼睛和视力,我鼓励你尽可能多地养成温柔眨眼的习惯)”可知,作者建议的是要养成温柔眨眼睛的习惯。故选B。
根据第二段中“The first layer of tears lies right up against the whites of your eyes, and provides an even coat of protein-rich moisture (水分) for the second layer to stick to.(第一层眼泪正好贴在眼白上,为第二层提供了一层均匀的富含蛋白质的水分)”和“The middle watery layer helps to wash away foreign dust.(中间的水层有助于冲洗掉外来的灰尘)”以及“The third outer layer of tears is somewhat oily. It serves to prevent the middle watery layer from drying quickly, and smooths your eyes.(眼泪的第三层是油性的。它的作用是防止中间的水层快速干燥,并抚平你的眼睛)”可知,第二段是对眼泪的三层作用进行了解释。故选A。
根据最后一段最后一句“If you’re thinking that such frequent blinking will make reading a book or viewing a movie uncomfortable, give it a try and you’ll see right away that it doesn’t take away from these experiences at all.(如果你认为这样频繁的眨眼会让看书或看电影不舒服,那就试一下,你马上就会发现眨眼并没有影响你的阅读体验)”可知,阅读时眨眼睛并不会让你不舒服,也不会影响阅读,它是无害的。故选D。
第一段中“adopt the habit of blinking”讲述的是作者推荐温柔的眨眼睛的习惯有助于自己的眼睛和视力;第二段通过“the first layer of tears”、“the middle watery layer”和“the third outer layer of tears”解释了为什么眨眼睛有助于双眼健康,是因为产生的泪水具有三层护眼功效;第三段和第四段中“one of the reasons why many of us don’t blink as often as we should”和“we take in most forms of media”阐述了为什么很多人认为经常眨眼睛不好的原因即受到大众媒体的欺骗。 Try Frequent Blinking for Healthier Eyes and Better Vision(尝试频繁眨眼,让眼睛更健康,视力更好)适合作本文最佳标题。

文章第一段“However, getting a fuller picture of the ocean would enable us to navigate ships more safely, create more accurate climate models, build offshore wind farms and protect ocean species-all part of what’s known as the “blue economy”. (然而,更全面地了解海洋将使我们能够更安全地驾驶船只,建立更精确的气候模型,建立近海风力发电场,保护海洋物种——所有这些都是所谓的“蓝色经济”的一部分)可知探索海洋的意义重大。综上所述,故选C项。
33.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“But many of these vehicles rely on batteries with a limited lifespan, and need to return to a boat or the shore to recharge, making it difficult for them to map remoter parts of the sea.”(但是很多这样的交通工具依赖于寿命有限的电池,需要回到船上或者岸上充电,这使得它们很难绘制更远的海域地图。)
根据文章第三段“As the float moves between colder and warmer parts of the ocean, the material inside the power module either melts or becomes solid, causing pressure that in turn creates energy and powers the robot’s generator.”(随着漂浮物在海洋中较冷和较暖的部分之间移动,电源模块中的物质要么融化,要么变成固体,产生压力,反过来产生能量,为机器人的发电机提供动力。) 故选A项。
根据文章第三段“he developed a way to power ocean robots by making use of the naturally occurring temperature disparity of the sea. The power module can be installed on Seatrec’s own floating device.”(他发明了一种利用海洋自然产生的温差为海洋机器人提供动力的方法。 故B项“New power modules for ocean robots”(海洋机器人的新型电源模块)符合题意。故选B项。

39.前文“Taking note of how the comparison is making you feel matters, too.(注意这种比较给你的感觉也很重要)”讲要注意自身的感受。空后“choose a different role model or focus on your own strengths and what you’re good at(选择一个不同的榜样,或者专注于自己的优势和擅长的事情)”讲述了可以换一个比较对象或者把注意力放在自己身上。
40.下文“It can help not only to boost your friend’s mood but can also help you feel good.(它不仅有助于提升你朋友的情绪,还可以帮助你感觉良好)”指出空处说的事情对朋友和自己的情绪都有好处,所以D项“而且,学会庆祝你朋友的成就”符合题意。故选D。

With the rubber duck in hand, Paul said impatiently, “Okay, Mum!” He passed the rubber duck to Tom, who grinned with delight at the sight of the toy. Tom gently pushed the duck across the surface of the water as if it were swimming. Then he squeezed the duck, with water splashing on Paul’s face. Almost immediately, Paul began to “fight” back, and it soon turned into a “water fight”. Then came happy laughter from where they were, bathing them in extreme joy.
Mum came back to the bathroom with a new bottle and a birthday gift. “Happy Birthday, Paul!” Looking at the gift, Paul screamed with joy, “Oh, it is the very birthday gift that I have dreamed of for long and I only told Dad once. Thanks, Mum.” Suddenly a tiny hand seized Paul and handed the rubber duck to him. “For me?” Paul asked surprisedly. Without hesitation, Tom nodded his head wildly. Overwhelmed with excitement, Paul said to Mum, “Tom gave me his favorite toy!” “What a special birthday present!” Mum laughed, giving the brothers a tight hug.
