Zhou Xue is a mother of a 9-year-old boy in Jiangsu. She is worried recently because nine of the 45 children in her son's class have started wearing glasses. "Worry about eye health of students is very real these days."said the mother.
Wantang Primary School in Yunnan has achieved something fantastic - none of its 536 students are short-sighted (近视),reported China Daily. Eye health experts said that while the school might be a special example, some of its ways are still helpful enough to be learned.
First of all, every student is asked to go outside during class breaks. They play outside for over three hours a day. "Even for quiet kids, we ask them to take a walk outside." said Yang Qingyi, a teacher at the school.
Other ways have also helped. For example, students can't take phones or computers to school. Also, they get at least 10.5 hours of sleep every day. And there are green trees all around the school.
Nowadays, more and more people in China have realized the importance of eye health. The double-reduction policy (双减政策) came out in July, 2021. It says that primary school should not give homework to first- and second- grade students so that they won't use their eyes too much. This invention won first prize in the competition.
“We were really excited to win," Hassan told newspaper KXAN News. The boys have been best friends since the third grade. "We have a lot in common. We both like science and have curiosity (好奇心) when it comes to things," Hassan explained. "When we see something, we always want to know how it works or why it works."
Their idea came from the old canes of Rizvi's grandfather. "My grandfather is almost blind and has bad legs," Rizvi said. "It's hard for him to get from place to place." So the boys added some sensors at the lower part of a cane. This invention really made his grandfather's life more convenient.
"I hope this can encourage other people to think outside the box, and that's my dream," Rizvi said."It would be amazing if one day what I made became a product (产品) that I could see people using," Hassan added. Both boys hope to become engineers when they grow up. They also plan to improve their invention to compete in more science competitions in the future.
