There is only one restaurant in the village, and it’s been serving delicious food and drinks for more than two centuries! If you look closely, you may be able to tell what makes this village different. Do you see how all the houses are much higher than we might expect? That’s because Hilden is home to some of the tallest people in all of England! Both men and women are about 25%taller than most others, and the tallest man in the village right now is seven and a half feet tall! That’s taller than most NBA players! No one is sure why everyone in Hilden is so tall, but we’re going to find out. Stay with us, won’t you? This is going to be interesting.

When I came to China, my supply of Chinese friends who were willing to hear me talk about school(one of the few topics I could hold more than a two-minute conversation about) was fairly limited. So how did I practise my spoken Chinese?
In my effort to be a good student, I decided to talk to every single taxi driver in Beijing. Taxi drivers were easy targets. They couldn’t tell me to shut up and they had nowhere to hide from my horrible grammar.
To my surprise, taxi drivers became my favorite Chinese teachers because most of the time they were happy to talk to me about anything. Also, their most loved topics of conversation tended to fall into three simple categories (种类): food, their hometown, and the foreigners’ countries. My ability to reach this level of conversational skill has been made possible by one question—“Are you a Beijinger?” and taxi drivers loved talking about their hometown.
I found that 15 minutes with a Beijing taxi driver was worth one hour with my Chinese tutor because they couldn’t speak English so there’s no second language to fall back on when things got too tough. It’s just me and my Chinese skills that would help. I was constantly surprised by how much I understood in comparison to my Chinese language level. And even if they kept talking for the whole trip, at least I was honing my listening skills. Over time, I found I could understand more and more, and was able to respond surprisingly quickly.
Another trick: If I wanted to impress, I would add an extra “r” to end my words. It always seemed to cheer them up, and usually I would get an encouraging “Your Beijing dialect is so good!”
    24. What was an advantage for the author to talk to taxi drivers in Beijing?
    A. They were very knowledgeable.
    B. They were cheaper than teachers.
    C. They had to put up with his grammar.
    D. They were more willing to help.
    25. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “honing” in paragraph 4?
    A. Improving. B. Showing. C. Missing. D. Exchanging.
    26. Why did the author add an extra “r” to end his words?
    A. He hoped to practise his Beijing dialect.
    B. He wanted to make fun of the drivers’ accent.
    C. He mainly aimed to cover up his poor Chinese.
    D. He wanted to make a good impression on the drivers.
    27. What is the text mainly about?
    A. The challenges of learning Chinese.
    B. The talkative taxi drivers in Beijing.
    C. The difficulty of living in a foreign country.
    D. The experience of practising spoken Chinese.
    【答案】24. C 25. A 26. D 27. D
    【解析】

    【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“If I wanted to impress, I would add an extra ‘r’ to end my words.(如果我想给人留下深刻印象,我会在我的单词后面加一个“r”。)”可知,作者弄儿化音是为了给司机留下好印象。故选D项。
    【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“So how did I practise my spoken Chinese?(那么我是如何练习汉语口语的呢?)”以及第二段中的“In my effort to be a good student, I decided to talk to every single taxi driver in Beijing. Taxi drivers were easy targets.(为了成为一个好学生,我决定和北京的每一个出租车司机交谈。出租车司机很容易成为目标。)”并结合下文中作者回顾他在北京利用出租车司机练汉语的经历可知,本文主要介绍的是作者练习汉语口语的经历。故选D项。

How important has Internet become in our lives? The Pew Research Center conducted a survey to celebrate the Web’s 25th birthday. The researchers were greatly heartened by what they found.
“In 2006, only 14 percent of American adults used Internet. Today, it’s 87 percent,” said Lee Rainie, the director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet Project. “It is what has impressed us the most.”
The survey also showed that 70 percent of the Internet users have been treated kindly or generously online, while 25 percent of respondents said they have been treated unkindly. More than half—56 percent—of users said they’ve seen an online community come together to help someone solve a problem. 25 percent said they’ve left an online group because members were too unpleasant.
When Pew asked questions about whether being online has enriched people’s relationships—or not—the results were very positive: 67 percent of Internet users said their online communication with family and friends has generally strengthened those relationships. Only 18 percent said it has generally weakened those relationships.
According to the survey, 53 percent of Internet users said Internet has become the hardest tech tool to give up. It is 15 percent higher than the result of a similar survey conducted in 2006. In fact, more people said they would have a harder time stopping using Internet than giving up TV. (These days, so much great television streams across the Internet that it makes sense.)
“In our survey, we have found that the Web makes a few people very unhappy. There’s strong evidence pointing to the fact that Internet users tend to compare their daily lives with the ‘highlight moments’ of their friends’ lives,” said Lee Rainie. “It’s really silly.”
    28. Which is the most impressive result of the latest survey?
    A. Users’ dependence on Internet. B. The fast growth of Internet users.
    C. The kindness of online communities. D. The strengthened family relationships.
    29. How many participants found it the hardest to give up Internet in 2006?
    A. 15%. B. 38%. C. 53%. D. 68%.
    30. What message does Lee Rainie seem to convey in the last paragraph?
    A. Online depression cannot be avoided. B. Don’t show off in online communities.
    C. Don’t make unnecessary comparison. D. Copy your friends’ wonderful lifestyles.
    31. How do the researchers feel about the results of the survey?
    A. Optimistic. B. Worried. C. Unconcerned. D. Doubtful.
    【答案】28 B 29. B 30. C 31. A
    【解析】

    【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“According to the survey, 53 percent of Internet users said Internet has become the hardest tech tool to give up. It is 15 percent higher than the result of a similar survey conducted in2006.(调查显示,53%的互联网用户表示,互联网已成为最难放弃的科技工具。这比2006年进行的一项类似调查的结果高出15%。)”可知,百分之38受访者认为2006年最难戒掉互联网。故选B。
    【30题详解】
细节理解题,根据最后一段“‘There’s strong evidence pointing to the fact that Internet users tend to compare their daily lives with the ‘highlight moments’ of their friends’ lives,’ said Lee Rainie. ‘It’s really silly.’(Lee Rainie说:“有强有力的证据表明,互联网用户倾向于将自己的日常生活与朋友生活中的‘精彩时刻’进行比较。”“这真的很愚蠢。”)”可知,Lee Rainie是在提醒网民不要进行错误的攀比。故选C。
    【31题详解】
推理判断题,通读全文,尤其是第一段“The Pew Research Center conducted a survey to celebrate the Web’s 25th birthday. The researchers were greatly heartened by what they found.(皮尤研究中心为庆祝网络诞生25周年进行了一项调查。研究人员对他们的发现感到非常振奋。)”可推断,研究人员对互联网的普及持乐观态度。故选A。

Leadership is not about being in charge. It’s not about being a boss, not about telling people what to do, making speeches, or receiving special treatment. That is rulership.
Leadership is not a skill in and of itself. It includes a series of qualities such as communication, organization, systemic thinking, empathy (同理心) and an understanding of how to use them at the right moment for the common good. To be more specific, every good leader has the following things in common.
Leaders understand the goal. Especially in times of conflict (冲突), leaders are able to keep their eye on the prize. They can keep their teams focused on the prize and know what should be done.
Leaders know they need others and they understand what motivates and drives people. They see things from different points of view. They understand that their job is to be in service to other team members so the team members can be in service to the common goal.
No one is good at everything and the best captains are often the worst sailors. Leaders’ skill is recognizing when someone else is great and in a better position to guide and build the teams.
Leaders don’t need a title. Being the captain of the team doesn’t automatically make you a leader. Leaders are the people who step up, and often they do it quietly and with little or no declared authority.
Leadership is a lifelong journey and it’s learned by doing and interacting, not studying or taking classes. So we don’t teach our kids which tools to use and when to use. Instead, we put them in situations where they get an opportunity to use their skills and a chance to evaluate and reflect on the experience so they can figure out how to get better results in the future.
    32. What does a typical ruler do?
    A. Seek special treatment. B. Persuade people to follow.
    C. Take care of the people. D. Put the public interest first.
    33. Which quality does paragraph 3 mainly concentrate on?
    A. Being selfless. B. Motivating the team.
    C. Focusing on the goal. D. Thinking systemically.
    34. What should we do to effectively help children become leaders?
    A. Send them to related classes. B. Involve them in real-life tasks.
    C. Ask them to read inspiring stories. D. Put them in comfortable situations.
    35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. What Are the Differences Between Rulers and Leaders?
    B. Why Do Most of the People Hate Ruler-like Leaders?
    C. Why Should Kids Be Encouraged to Become Leaders?
    D. What Are the Basic Qualities Needed for Leadership?
    【答案】32. A 33. C 34. B 35. D
    【解析】
    【导语】这是一篇说明文。本文主要是探讨领导者应该具备哪些品质。

    【33题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Leaders understand the goal. Especially in times of conflict (冲突), leaders are able to keep their eye on the prize. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】Favourite Traditional Chinese Festival
I feel it a privilege to talk about the Spring Festival, the most important festival for Chinese people.
Strictly speaking, the Spring Festival starts from the early days of the 12th lunar month and lasts till the mid-1st lunar month of the next year. Of them, Chinese people attach great importance to Spring Festival Eve, when all family members eat dinner together and enjoy the Spring Festival Gala. As for me, I love the Spring Festival most because it symbolizes unity, prosperity and new hopes for the future. Plus, not only can I set off fireworks during the festival, but I can also get lucky money as a New Year’s gift!
To conclude, the Spring Festival bears unique significance for every Chinese. Hope the excitement of the celebration will reach more people across the world.
    My Favourite Traditional Chinese Festival
It is a great honor for me to give a speech on my favorite traditional Chinese Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival.
It falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, in memory of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet of ancient China. As a memorial, people usually eat zongzi, a pyramid-shaped dumpling made of sticky rice and wrapped in reed leaves. There is also a nationwide practice of having or watching dragon boat racing, where competing teams drive their dragon boats forward to the drum beats. Actually it is the sporting spirit and the atmosphere of excitement displayed in dragon boat racing that makes this festival stand out as my favorite.
As a traditional celebration in China, the festival is in the UNESCO ICH list now. I believe more people will explore the legends and customs of the Dragon Boat Festival in the future.

Christmas came, and Stewart gathered the children at the dinner table. He tried to prepare all of their favorite food because he had no extra money for individual gifts.
“Lucy, I baked your favorite apple pie. Sean, I made sure to get some baked spaghetti (意大利面条) from the store. And Gregory, I baked a whole chicken. Your favorites! Merry Christmas, my sweet children!” Stewart told them.
After eating dinner together, Stewart took his three kids outside to make a huge snowman and had a snowball fight. It was a family tradition that Stewart wanted to keep alive even though his wife was no longer with them.
Many years passed, and Stewart’s kids all had families of their own. And they were all too busy to visit Stewart, although they didn’t live far away. So Stewart spent most of the year alone.
Stewart would often sit in a wheelchair and look at old photos of his family. He came across one particular photo where he and his children were making a snowman outside the house. They were happy, and the lovely smiles on his children’s faces were priceless.
Stewart waited for his children to come on Christmas Eve, looking out of the window. “How I wish...” he said to himself as he watched others having fun together in their backyards.
Stewart was sure that each member of his family had forgotten his invitation once again until he heard a short knock on the door.
    “Who is it?” Stewart asked.
“Hi, Grandpa,” a small boy said after he opened the door.
“Tim! What a surprise!” Stewart smiled. “Is it just you? How did you get here alone?!”
Tim nodded sadly, “Even on Christmas Eve, my parents don’t notice me. They’re too busy with work. I know how much you love Christmas, Grandpa, so I walked here.”
Stewart wanted to cheer his grandson up, so he went to get dressed. “Well, you and I will have a happy Christmas together,” Stewart told Tim. “Kids deserve to play in the snow every Christmas, ”he added.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

To Stewart’s surprise, his children and grandchildren were all around him when he woke up in hospital.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Both of them went outside even though Stewart could not stay outdoors for a long time. As soon as they went out, Tim couldn’t wait to rush into the snow. Soon, they made a huge snowman together. Stewart rolled his wheelchair, singing and dancing with Tim, their faces glowing with happiness. By the time Tim’s parents realized that their son was missing, they happened to see him having a lot of fun with his grandfather in the snow. Unfortunately, just as they were enjoying themselves, Stewart fell over, and Tim’s parents called an ambulance to take him to the hospital.
To Stewart’s surprise, his children and grandchildren were all around him when he woke up in hospital. Stewart was very happy to get together with all his family members again, although this time it was in hospital. All Stewart’s children were ashamed of being too busy with work to accompany Stewart. After Stewart recovered, Gregory, Sean and Lucy rescheduled a late Christmas night. They gathered their children and father at the dinner table, and baked Dad’s favorite pizza. They all greeted,“Merry Christmas!”
