At the age of 17 years 64 days, Mack Rutherford has become the youngest person to fly around the world alone! Mack’s journey around the world lasted five months and he flew across 52 countries in total. His record-breaking flight began in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, on 23 March, 2022. He was 16 years old when he took off and celebrated his 17th birthday by himself in his plane.
Mack faced many challenges during his adventure. Because of his small-sized aircraft, he had to land whenever the weather got too rough. However, at some points he really couldn’t land, such as when flying non-stop for 10 hours over an ocean. At other points, he faced extremely hot weather, such as in Dubai. In Sudan, a country in Africa, Mack also faced sandstorms which made it hard for him to see where he was going. Mack battled strong winds and pouring rain during his flight, but he never stopped smiling, joking and updating his flowers on his social media account along the way, and managed to expertly pilot his plane to safety.
And if Mack’s surname “Rutherford” sounds familiar, it’s because his elder sister Zara also flew around the world earlier this year, and still holds the female version of the record! The Rutherford siblings (兄弟姐妹) were inspired by their parents to become pilots. “I have known for certain I wanted to fly since I was eleven,” Mack said, “My dad Sam is a professional ferry pilot, my mum Beatrice is a recreational private pilot.”
Mack hopes to inspire young people to begin working towards their own goals, “No matter what background you have, I believe it is never too early to work towards your dreams and you shouldn’t limit yourself by others’ expectations.” With both feet firmly back on the ground now, it’s time for Mack to turn his attention towards catching up on his schoolwork!

In the August sun, it’s unbearably hot in my car. I’m in Vancouver, approaching the Knight Street Bridge as I try to get home after work. It’s 5:15 pm. Traffic is already slowing down and then it comes to a full stop. I’m stuck even before getting on the bridge.
This has become my normal work commute (上下班往返) routine. Ahead of me is a heavily jammed on-ramp (匝道). I stare at the endless rows of vehicles, depressed.
At first I think this is not how it looks. The traffic will soon start moving. Seconds pass. Minutes pass. Looking at the rows of cars and trucks glittering in the sun, I start counting — 299, 300, 301 — and I give up.
Suddenly I remember I’m one of the 300 helpless drivers. But I stay focused. When the cars do move, I move carefully, making sure not to bump into other vehicles. Finally, I make it onto the bridge. The traffic is still crawling at a snail’s pace. Tired and hungry, I become very anxious.
Just then, I hear a weak sound in the distance. The sound gradually becomes louder, until I can identify it as an emergency vehicle approaching from behind. What do we do? The bridge is packed. There’s no room for us to move.
But I’m wrong. Every single car quickly, yet carefully, moves to the side. Without thinking, I follow suit. The lane remains open for a few seconds during which the ambulance flashes through.
Afterward, every car moves back. We close up the emergency lane, ready to continue our patient wait. Back in my spot, I forget my tiredness and hunger. My anxiety is gone. I start reflecting upon what 300 fellow drivers and I just did.
How did we do that? Despite our exhaustion, we collectively decided to help the stranger who needed the time more desperately than we did. We drew on our sympathy (同情心) and intelligence, requiring no directives.
Although I may seem alone stuck on the bridge, I’m connected to all the other drivers. Together we could make the impossible possible.
28. What did the author think of his commute routine?
A. It was surprising. B. It was annoying.
C. It was boring. D. It was confusing.
29. When was the author’s anxiety gone?
A. When he was stuck in the traffic.
B. After the ambulance flashed through.
C. After they decided to help the stranger.
D. When he heard the sound of the ambulance.
30. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The author got on the bridge at 5:15 pm.
B. Moving carefully, the author still bumped into other cars.
C. Every driver made room for the ambulance automatically.
D. The author followed the ambulance through the bridge.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The drivers didn’t make a difference.
B. The author was stuck alone on the bridge.
C. The author talked with the other drivers.
D. People’s kindness made the miracle happen.
D
Languages around the world continue to disappear at an alarming rate. According to the UNESCO Atlas of Languages in Danger, there are 6,700 languages spoken in the world, 40 percent of which are in danger of disappearing. And the majority under threat are languages spoken by indigenous(本土的) peoples around the world.
When an Indigenous language is lost, not only do we lose the knowledge built up by the community of its speakers, but also the world’s cultural and biological(生物学的)diversity is endangered. For example, where there are most species of plants and animal, there are most languages spoken. When a new species is “discovered” by scientists, you can bet your bottom dollar that the native people living in that area would already have had a name for that species and be highly knowledgeable about it. These languages are biological encyclopedias (百科全书), and if they are no longer spoken, this wisdom and understanding is lost to humanity forever. “We human beings should care about indigenous languages in the same way as we should care about the loss of the world’s variety of plants and animals, its biodiversity,” said Steven Pinker, a respected linguist and Harvard Professor,.
Fortunately, efforts are being made to bring attention to and preserve these languages, along with the cultural and biological diversity they represent. And education is at the heart of the idea. The United Nations has declared 2019 as The International Year of Indigenous Languages so as to raise awareness, and to teach those who haven’t been aware of the contributions they can make. Similarly, UNESCO’s International Fund for Cultural Diversity is providing money to educational projects in the hope of bringing Indigenous language and knowledge into school.
32. How does the author show the seriousness of the problem in paragraph 1?
A. By making a comparison. B. By listing numbers.
C. By quoting a famous person. D. By providing examples.
33. Why should we preserve indigenous languages?
A. They help scientists find new species.
B. Many of them are at risk of dying out.
C. People speaking these languages are more knowledgeable.
D. They contribute to the cultural and biological diversity.
34. What is the intention of The International Year of Indigenous Languages?
A. To educate people to protect indigenous languages.
B. To raise people’s awareness of the United Nations.
C. To bring indigenous language to school.
D. To stress the importance of indigenous languages.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Languages and Biodiversity
B. Indigenous Languages Explained
C. Preserving Indigenous Languages
D. The Loss of Indigenous Languages

At the same time, I went through a noodle shop, and I suddenly felt very hungry. I wished for a bowl of noodles, but I had no money!
The seller saw me standing before the counter and asked, “Hey, little girl, you want to eat a bowl?”
“But… but I do not carry money…” I shyly replied.
“Okay, I’ll treat you.” the seller said, “come in, I will cook you a bowl of noodles.”
A few minutes later the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. After eating some pieces, I cried.
“What is it?” He asked.
“Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!” I said as I wiped my tears. “Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, and my mother, after a quarrel, chased me out of the house. She is too cruel!”
The seller sighed, “Girl, why do you think so? Think again. I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you felt that way. Your mother has been taking care of you since you were born. Why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mom?”
I was really surprised after hearing that.

35. C。 根据第一段“And the majority under threat are languages spoken by Indigenous(本土的)peoples around the world.(受到威胁的大多数是世界各地土著人民使用的语言。)”和第二段第一句“When an Indigenous language is lost, not only do we lose the knowledge built up by the community of its speakers, but also the world’s cultural and biological diversity is endangered.(当一种土著语言消失时,我们不仅会失去其使用者群体所积累的知识,而且世界的文化和生物多样性也会受到威胁。)”以及第三段第一句“Fortunately, efforts are being made to bring attention to and preserve these languages, along with the cultural and biological diversity they represent.(幸运的是,人们正在努力关注和保护这些语言,以及它们所代表的文化和生物多样性。)”

Paragraph 1
Just at that moment, many memories came into my mind. When I was ill, she was always the one taking care of me. When I had trouble with my study, she never lost faith in me and encouraged me to keep going. When I arrived home during the weekend, she always prepared my favorite food. All her kindness came back to me. I should be grateful for all she had done for me. I realized I should go back home immediately and say sorry to my mother.
Paragraph 2
When arriving home, I saw my mother sitting at the dinner table, worried and tired. She must have been looking for me everywhere. I was ready for her anger and shouts. However, before I could apologize, my mother saw me and gently said, "Oh, honey, thank God you're back! Come inside. You are probably very hungry. I cooked your favorite noodles. Come and eat while they are still hot..." No longer able to control myself, I cried in her arms. "I’m sorry, Mom. Please forgive me." I whispered to her through tears, extremely ashamed of myself.

The Amazon rainforest is moving toward a “tipping point” past which trees will start to die off in large numbers, researchers have said.
The study, published in the Journal of Natural Climate Change, was conducted by scholars from the University of Exeter, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the Technical University of Munich. They used satellite data from 1991 to 2016 to examine trends in deforestation.
They calculated that 75 percent of the rainforest is now at risk of being unable to recover when experiencing droughts, which are also increasingly more common due to global warming.
“Deforestation and climate change are likely to be the main drivers of this decline,” Niklas Boers of PIK and the Technical University of Munich told the BBC. The study has predicted that it is only a matter of decades until a “significant chunk” of the Amazon is transformed from rainforest into savannah.
What would the world be like without the Amazon rainforest?
The destruction of the Amazon rainforest, in some ways caused by global warming, will also speed up this process. “The Amazon stores lots of carbon and all of that would be released into the atmosphere, which would then further contribute to increasing temperatures and have future effects on global mean temperatures,” Professor Boulton of the University of Exeter told the BBC.
This worrying snowball effect means that the destruction of the Amazon will make the much larger battle against global warming more difficult.
The destruction of the Amazon would also have a huge impact on the ecology of the Earth. The Amazon rainforest is home to more than 30,000 species of plants, 2.5 million species of insects, 2,500 fish, more than 1,500 bird species, 550 reptiles, and 500 mammals, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society. A savannah, a grassland environment that lacks a large variety of plant life, would be unable to host the large and varied ecosystems that currently exist in the rainforest. It is likely that a large number of species would become endangered or even extinct, as they would be unable to adjust to this new ecosystem.

The topic “How much privacy can a photo reveal” has been trending on Sina Weibo, sparking concern and heated discussion about privacy awareness.
“一张照片能暴露多少隐私”成为新浪微博热门话题,这让大家关注起隐私意识并展开热烈讨论。
In group chats, some people may post their original photos. But that may give away your home address and other information.
Images often contain a lot of information and various traces left by digital cameras or photo manipulation software.
This data, called Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF), is a key tool for many professionals. It can detail whether the photographer used a flash, which digital effects were applied to a picture and when the photo was taken. EXIF can also contain the precise GPS coordinates of the location where a photo was taken, according to CNN.
If you take a landscape picture from your window and send the original picture to a group chat, it means that you are releasing your location data to all strangers in the group. They may even accurately infer your house number by analyzing the shooting time and angle.
Not just in a group chat, sending an image in a text message, email, or other delivery tools will also include the accompanying information. So how do we protect our privacy when sending photos?
The most effective way is to avoid sending original photos in group chats. If it’s necessary, try not to tap the “original picture”. However, photos sent by WeChat Moments are automatically compressed by the system, and they travel without location and other information, according to the WeChat team.
To tackle the problem at its root, we can delete and remove a picture’s EXIF data on a computer. If you are using an iOS smartphone, you can turn off location services for the camera in the privacy settings. If you’re using an Android, the settings vary. Typically, you can go to the setting menu and switch the services off for the camera, according to CTV News.
There is one more thing you can do – photoshop your photos before you share it. What comes with your edited images is photos without stored location data.
