2023·江苏苏州·高一统考开学考试)The match was nearly over and I was almost on my last legs, when I saw a chance. I picked the ball up from Sally and headed for the German penalty area(罚球区).

“Jess!” I could hear Jules shouting as she ran alongside me. “Pass!”

I looked up and hit the ball forward into space. Jules ran on to it, picked it up and hit the ball into the net. It was just as good as Beckham’s last-minute goal against Greece!

Two minutes later, the referee(裁判) blew the whistle for full-time. A draw.

“Penalties,” Jules said, with a wide smile on her face.

Although it wasn’t usual to finish a friendly with penalties, both sides had decided that it would be a nice idea. Joe came on to the pitch(球场) to give us a quick pep talk. Maybe he wouldn’t choose me.

“OK, Jules, you go first,” Joe said. “Then Mel, Tina, Hannah and—Jess.” I tried not to look relieved that I was last. With any luck I wouldn’t have to take my turn, if the match was decided before that.

The Germans went first and scored. So did Jules. The Germans scored again. So did Mel. After a third German goal, Tina was looking nervous, but she was lucky because her shot went in off the post.

My stomach was turning over and over as Hannah stepped up to take our fourth penalty. If Hannah scored, it would be all down to the last German penalty-taker—and me.

Hannah rolled the ball smoothly into the left-hand corner of the net. I tried to take deep breaths to calm myself down. If the next German player scored, I’d have to take my turn. I closed my eyes, willing her to fail.

A loud roar around the stadium told me that she’d scored. The referee signaled me to come over and with heavy steps I walked over to place the ball on the spot. I was really tired and my legs felt like they were made of lead. Behind me I could hear the girls yelling encouragement.

I made a superhuman effort and ran towards the ball, but even as I hit it, I knew it wasn’t right. I groaned as the ball hit the crossbar and bounced away into the crowd.

4Why was Jess’s kick compared to the one of Beckham’s?

    AThey were both penalty kicks.

BThey both ensured victory of the match.

CThey were both the only goal scored in the match.

DThey were both scored in the last minute of the match.

5Why was Jess relieved learning that she was the last to take the penalty?

    AShe had confidence in herself.

BThey already had the game in their hands.

CShe might not be the one to decide the game.

DThe Germans were not good at penalty kicks.

6How many rounds of penalty did they take in all?

    AFour. BFive. CSix. DSeven.

7How did Jess feel when she was about to take her penalty?

AExhausted and unconfident. BRelieved and delighted.

CRelieved but disappointed. DExhausted but excited.

2022·江苏南通·高一江苏省如皋中学校考开学考试)When we see a person in trouble, the first idea that comes to our mind is to lend a hand. But what if we see an animal in trouble, does the same rule apply?

This question was raised after a group of penguins (企鹅) were saved from an icy gully (峡谷) in Antarctica. It was filmed for the BBC wildlife series Dynasties. The film crew were anxious when they saw that a group of penguins had fallen into a gully and been trapped with their young. They built a slope (斜坡) so that a few of the penguins could save themselves.

The case has taken the international media by storm. Viewers watching this film sighed in relief. “I’m so glad. I understand not taking action directly, but a helping hand isn’t bothering, right?” viewer Kathryn Shaw said on her Facebook.

However, others think human interference (干涉) is unnatural. “You can’t have sunshine throughout your life. To have done anything else would only make matters worse.” said the show’s creator David Attenborough, according to TheTimes.

In this case, however, Mike Gunton, the executive producer of the series, said that this was a one-off situation. “There were no animals going to suffer by interfering. You weren’t touching the animals and it was just felt by doing this …They had the chance not to have to keep slipping down the slope.” he told the BBC

Such cases are familiar to Paul Nicklen, wildlife photographer for National Geographic. He told Metro, “If it’s ever a predator (捕食者) situation, no matter how gut-wrenching, you stay out of the way. Even when you’re watching a male polar bear eat a baby bear.”

“There’s no rule book in those situations. You can only respond to the facts that are right there in front of you.” Will Lawson, the show’s director, told Daily Mail.

8What has led to a heated media discussion?

AThe rescue of penguins from a gully.

    BPeople’s various opinions on penguins.

CSome penguins’ sufferings in a gully.

DWays of filming the series Dynasties.

9Who holds a positive attitude towards human interference?

    ADavid Attenborough. BWill Lawson.

    CPaul Nicklen. DKathryn Shaw.

10Which of the following best explains the word “gutwrenching” underlined in Paragraph 6?

AMaking one confused. BMaking one heartbroken.

CPutting one in danger. DMaking one amazed.

11What can be the best title for the text?

ANecessity of Lending a Hand to Animals

    BProtect Animals From Dying Out

    CHuman Interference on Dangerous Animals

DHelp Animals in Trouble or Not

2020·湖南长沙·高一长沙麓山国际实验学校校考开学考试)You may know the English letters A, B and CBut do you know there are people called ABCs? Do you know there is such a thing as “a banana person”? How strange! ABC means American-born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person”. A banana is yellow outside. So, when a person is a “banana”, he or she is white inside-thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside-looking like a Chinese.

Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them don’t speak Chinese. But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are overseas (海外的)Chinese. These people may be citizens (公民)of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair.

But they are not Chinese citizens. They are people of the People’s Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist CN. Yang(杨振宁). He got the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen.

    12“ABCs” in this passage means___________.

Athree English letters Ba kind of banana

CChinese born in America DAmericans born in China

13Chinese in Western countries are called “banana persons” because___________.

Atheir bodies are white inside but yellow outside

Bthey think like Westerners but look like Chinese

Cthey were born in China but go to study in America

    Dthey like to eat bananas

14Which of the sentences is WRONG about ABCs?

AABCs may know little about China. BThey are overseas Chinese.

CThey may speak little Chinese. DThey are Chinese citizens.

    15This passage mainly talks about___________.

Adifferent kinds of bananas Boverseas Chinese

Cthe Nobel Prize Dthe story of CN. Yang

2022·江西新余·高一新余市第一中学校考开学考试)We’ve heard about several “poor students” in the past year. Cui Qingtao, a student from Yunnan, working with his parents on a building site when he got an admission letter (录取通知书) from Peking University.    16    She is a student from Hebei. She was doing her part-time job in a different city when her family got her admission letter from Peking University.

17    For example, they are all strong and optimistic (乐观的). Li hui said in an interview, " As long as we are alive, there are no problems that cannot be solved, and many people don’t have my experiences.    18      Such an idea makes many adults feel embarrassed. He refused to accept donation money and decided to make money by himself. This is also the common thing that “ poor students “ have.

Whatever kind of values you hold, such personalities are necessary for growth.    19    Not everything goes well all the time. Only being strong and optimistic can one go through difficulties. In fact, living in poor families doesn’t promise such good personalities, and living in happiness doesn’t promise optimistic attitudes (态度). We like such “poor students ”because they are strong and optimistic.

For them, few can choose their lifestyles.    20    That’s why they are highly praised. Every one of us should learn from them.

ALife is full of ups and downs.

BA girl named Wang Xinyi is another example.

C“Poor students” are usually hard-working and caring.

DAnd these experiences make me grow and become better.

EBorn in poor families, these students have a lot in common.

FHowever, all of them can choose their attitudes towards life .

GWe can learn a lot from these “poor students”.

2023·陕西安康·高一统考开学考试)When Gloria Estefan started primary school, she could not read, write nor speak English. She felt lost, unhappy and completely frightened. However, someone changed her life—her English teacher, Mrs Collins. Her family had left Cuba in 1959 when she was only a year old in the hope of finding a better life in America. Initially they moved to Miami where the family settled in a set of apartments with other Cuban women and children who had immigrated.

The women were close-knit and supportive. While she felt safe, she was also isolated. They all spoke Spanish, and she rarely heard English. On her very first day in school, which she was looking forward to, she was completely shocked. She came home and told her mother that she had learnt her first English word “stupid”. It was the nickname a boy had given her.

In every way possible, she was set apart from her classmates. She was the only panic and non-white student. She also found it difficult to grasp the English language as it was her second language. The culture, her school friends and the food they ate were different from hers. As such, she was set apart from her classmates.

One person made that year bearable for her, Mrs Collins. She was young and African American, so she understood how Gloria felt as she was the only non-white student in class. Mrs Collins never doubted that Gloria could catch up with the other students in time.

Still, the teasing continued. The boy who called her stupid would not stop laughing at her for her accent. He was a good student and the proud holder of the class’s reading award. It was an honour given periodically to a student, based on excellence in schoolwork, participation and homework. Gloria wanted that long-waited award.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Mrs Collins encouraged her to compete for the reading award.
