My First Marathon(马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles(脚踝)was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train.Yet,I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E.class,the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball.I didn't do either well.He later informed(通知) me that I was "not athletic".
The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s,I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind.A test of wills!
The night before my marathon,I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line.I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line,my shoe laces(鞋带)became untied. So I stopped to readjust(重新调整).Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3,I passed a sign:"GO FOR IT,RUNNERS!"
By mile 17,I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly.Despite the pain,I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21,I was starving!
As I approached mile 23,I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan.She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 am or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact,I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签),I can now call myself a "marathon winner".

T-shirts out;uniforms in
School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.A.That's no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the "wrong" clothes.
Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule-wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers;school uniforms tear those barriers down.
As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties.
For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform,he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets.People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education.
Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children's "creativity." First,as noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality. They just copy their classmates.Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like.
While they're in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and maths;this should take up all the creativity they have.Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.
8. In Paragraph 1,the word "benefits" probably means ______ .
A. tasks B. messages C. advantages D. differences
9. From the passage we learn that uniforms in general ______ .
A. help the wearers keep their duties in mind
B. prevent the wearers from being laughed at
C. are seen as a symbol of power
D. help to create social barriers
10. Some people are against school uniforms because ______ .
A. they think that school uniforms are too popular
B. they believe that uniforms will make students less creative
C. they don't agree that uniforms can remove social barriers
D. they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniforms
11. The author would probably agree that ______ .
A. it makes no difference whether to wear school uniforms or not
B. students' individuality may not come from school education
C. students' creativity is related to the clothes they choose
D. school uniforms help to create equality among students

Did your mother ever say you'll feel better after a good cry?It turns out Mom is right as usual-crying really is healthy. What's more, letting yourself feel blue and accepting those feelings will help you feel better in the long run, according to a new research.
In three separate studies both online and in a lab, researchers at UC Berkeley evaluated the responses from 1,300 adults regarding their psychological(心理的)health and emotional well-being(幸福感).In one study,1,000 participants filled out a survey evaluating how they felt about the statement,"I tell myself I shouldn't be feeling the way that I'm feeling."Those who agreed with the statement scored lower on tests of well-being..In other words, letting yourself feel bad is better for your mind and mood than trying to control negative thoughts.
"We found that people who habitually accept their negative emotions experience fewer negative emotions, which adds to better psychological health,"said study senior author Iris Mauss,PhD,an associate professor of psychology at UC Berkeley in an article on the university's website.
In a society where the importance to be happy is emphasized daily on the other social media platforms, letting yourself be down in the dumps can be tough.Just remember that true happiness isn't always what people say it is.
"It turns out that how we approach our own negative emotional reactions is really important for our well-being,"said study lead author Brett Ford,PhD,an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Toronto."People who accept these emotions without judging or trying to change them are able to deal with their stress more successfully."
So next time someone tells you to"turn that frown upside down",ignore them.Embrace your inner feelings for a while.
12. How did the researchers carry out one of the studies? ______
A. They gave the participants different tests.
B. They compared their own thoughts with others.
C. They studied the participants' everyday experiences.
D. They compared the participants' thoughts and their feelings.
13. What does the underlined part "be down in the dumps"in Paragraph 4 mean? ______
A. Be lonely. B. Be depressed. C. Be positive. D. Be comfortable.
14. What did Brett Ford try to show in Paragraph 5? ______
A. It is better for people to accept negative emotions.
B. We should never try to change others' thoughts.
C. People who accept themselves are happier.
D. Positive people tend to be less stressed.
15. What would be the best title for the text? ______
A. Turn your frown upside down
B. Crying is good for our health
C. Stop having bad feelings.
D. Stop feeling the way that you're feeling

The sight of the flashing diamonds on the hands of some of the summer visitors at the fishing village in which he lived had added a new article to the list of beautiful things his mother would own someday. He had heard that just one single diamond was sometimes worth five hundred dollars or more. This had discouraged him very much.
But one day,he happened to pass a shop in the neighboring town and saw a number of diamond rings displayed in the window. He stopped fascinated(被吸引住的),and pressed his face against the glass eagerly to see if any prices were marked upon them.Imagine his surprise when he saw upon the largest one-- a tag(标签)marked ﹩4.75.He looked again to see if he had made a mistake.Perhaps it was ﹩475.But no,he knew enough about figures to see that he was right the first time.

(4)B. Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签),I can now call myself a "marathon winner".(下定决心做自己,勇往直前,摆脱羞耻和世俗的标签,我现在可以称自己为"马拉松赢家"。) B.A winner is one with a great effort of will.
8~11.【答案】C、A、B、D
They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling (标记) that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the "wrong" clothes.(他们立即结束了来自服装的强大的社会分类和标签。 A.tasks任务;B.messages信息;C.advantages 好处;D.differences不同。
The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets. 故选A。
Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children's"creativity(有些家长对校服不满意,说校服会影响孩子的"创造力")可知有些人反对校服因为他们认为校服会使学生的创造力减弱。
The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers(障碍);school uniforms tear those barriers down. D.school uniforms help to create equality among students(校服有助于创造学生之间的平等)符合题意。
12~15.【答案】D、B、A、B
In one study,1,000 participants filled out a survey evaluating how they felt about the statement,"I tell myself I shouldn't be feeling the way that I'm feeling."(在一项研究中,1000名参与者填写了一份调查问卷,评估他们对"我告诉自己我不应该有这种感觉"这句话的感受。)
In a society where the importance to be happy is emphasized daily on the other social media platforms, letting yourself be down in the dumps can be tough.(在一个其他社交媒体平台每天都强调快乐重要性的社会里,让自己be down in the dumps 是很困难的。) A.Be lonely孤独的;B.Be depressed沮丧的;C.Be positive积极的;D.Be comfortable舒服的。
根据第五段 "It turns out that how we approach our own negative emotional reactions is really important for our well-being,"said study lead author Brett Ford,PhD,an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Toronto."People who accept these emotions without judging or trying to change them are able to deal with their stress more successfully."("事实证明,我们如何处理自己的消极情绪反应对我们的健康真的很重要,"该研究的主要作者、多伦多大学心理学助理教授布雷特•福特博士说。" 故选A。
Did your mother ever say you'll feel better after a good cry?It turns out Mom is right as usual-crying really is healthy. What's more, letting yourself feel blue and accepting those feelings will help you feel better in the long run, according to a new research.(你妈妈有没有说过哭一场会感觉好一点?
People with slash careers often have a primary job that provides for most of their needs. The primary job usually comes before the slash.(从事斜杠职业的人通常有一份能满足他们大部分需求的主要工作。
Some people who encourage slash careers say they actually help with work-life balance.(一些鼓励斜杠职业的人说,这实际上有助于平衡工作和生活)提到,斜杠职业有助于平衡工作和生活,G项"那是因为他们可以给人们生活中需要的一些乐趣"解释上文的原因,符合语境,故选G项。
With a slash career, losing one's job does not mean losing one's entire income.Or a secondary job may be so successful that it can turn into one's primary job.(对于斜杠职业来说,失去一份工作并不意味着失去全部收入。
One might give up necessary things like relaxation, exercise or time with one's family.People with slash careers need to think carefully about how they use their time.(一个人可能会放弃一些必要的事情,比如放松、锻炼或与家人在一起的时间。
