That night at dinner, my parents asked how I felt about getting the major role. Biting my tips, I tried to hold back tears in my eyes. “Avery was upset that I was picked to be Alice. She pretty much threw away our friendship.” Petting my head softly, my dad comforted me, “Sometimes when our friends do well, we may feel envious and don’t know how to act. Give her a little time and understanding. I bet she’ll come around before too long.” After a moment’s hesitation, I nodded in agreement.
Then at practice one day, I approached Avery. “Great! I’m really impressed by the way you say your lines.” I gave her a big smile. “Thanks,” Avery was a bit embarrassed. I hugged her, whispering in her ear, “I’m still struggling with a few things about my character. Could you help me this Thursday?” She hesitated a while and agreed. With our joint efforts, our play turned out fine. We had so much fun and received wild applause and loud cheers from the audience.

M: Hello. Sydney Harbor Bridge Climb. Jack speaking.
W: Oh, hi! It’s Julia calling from Hotspots Travel Agency in Seattle. I’ve got 18 customers who would like to climb your Harbor Bridge. So ... how long does it take?
M: The whole experience takes just three hours. The first hour involves a safety lecture and training on the ground. And then they’ll spend one hour getting to the top of the bridge. And then another hour to come back down.
W: Right. It must get pretty windy up there, so should they wear some clothing that can keep warm? You know, like a jacket of some sort?
M: No need for that because all climbers are provided with our special suit to wear. So climbers just need to bring something which isn’t too heavy … such as a T-shirt. So, could we look at some possible dates?

M: I’m quite often asked how I became a dress designer. For me, it was something I always wanted to do. However, because my mother was a university teacher and my father a doctor, they found it hard to accept that designing clothes could be a serious job.
Anyway, they said I had to do a year’s business course first after high school. I didn’t like it at the time, but later, it made a big difference to me. And the other thing I did during that year was to get a part-time job in the office of a small factory making good quality clothes.
