Mikah Frye, a 9-year-old boy, was walking down the streets with his grandmother discussing Christmas gifts when he saw some homeless people struggling to stay warm in the cold night. Then he was thinking about a way to help the homeless to spend a warm Christmas.
That thought stayed in Mikah Frye's mind and when he reached home, Mikah told his parents not to buy the Microsoft XBox gaming device he had asked for earlier. Mikah realised that by not buying the $300 device, he could instead donate over 30 blankets to the homeless. He knew how much it meant to be warm in the cold holiday season.
Three years ago, Mikah and his parents were the ones living in a homeless shelter.Having suffered a financial crisis, they too had lost their house, not knowing where their next meal would come from and sharing a blanket every night.Mikah was six years old then but he remembered what it was like to have to give back that precious blanket every morning.
Reaching out to the emergency shelter programme that looked after them 3 years ago, the family donated 60 blankets in the end, each with a personalised message of hope in Mikah's handwriting stating “They gave me a blanket, but I had to leave it.That's why I want you to have your own blanket.Today, I live in my own house, and someday you will too.Your friend, Mikah.”
The homeless people at the shelter may not have been able to give Mikah a Christmas gift in return but his gesture was noted by the billion-dollar company Microsoft who made sure that Mikah was fooled into visiting their store so that Santa Claus could personally deliver an XBox from the company to him as a reward for making the top of “Santa's list of nice boys” that year.
24.Why did Mikah give up his Christmas gift?
A.The device was out of date. B.His parents had a tight budget.
C.He wanted to spend a warm Christmas. D.He decided to do something charitable.
25.What made Mikah have a better understanding of the situation of the homeless?
A.His own experience. B.His parents' education.
C.His visiting to the emergency shelter. D.The cold weather during the holiday season.
26.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.The homeless gave Mikah a gift in return.
B.He finally got the gift he wanted at Christmas.
C.The company Microsoft fooled Mikah into buying an XBox.
D.Mikah wrote a thank-you note to the emergency shelter he lived in.
27.What might be the best title for the text?
A.Mikah's Precious Christmas Gift B.Mikah's Giving Warmth at Christmas
C.Microsoft Rewarded Nice Boys on Santa's List D.The Homeless Needed Blankets at Christmas

I am a self-taught maker of gingerbread(姜饼) houses. It wasn't something I ever did growing up. In fact, gingerbread houses struck me as an awful lot of work for little return, a baking (烘焙) project that would eat up the time I could spend doing something more productive.
But, five years ago, I saw a sign at the library announcing a gingerbread house contest (比赛). I went home and told my kids and we made a house from the start. It took all day and we were covered in icing, but I was blown away by the final product. It was so satisfying to see a little house, decorated with colorful candy. I delivered the house to the library, where it won first place in the family group, and we got a generous $100 in gift certificates (礼券) for local businesses.
Every year since then, my kids and I have attended the gingerbread house contest, and every year we've won the family group. Our houses are not very beautiful; the only thing that sets them apart is the fact that we make the gingerbread from the start. Everyone else uses store-bought ready-made pieces, which makes the houses look the same. Ours, by contrast, is misshapen and leans; my husband refers to it jokingly as “the slanty shanty (倾斜的小屋).”
If you haven't made a gingerbread house before, I highly recommend you give it a try. What better way to use that time than making something great with your kids? What I hope, too, is that this tradition will give my kids a way to make it feel like Christmas, no matter where they go in life. My hope is that they'll make gingerbread houses wherever they go in life and always think of home.
28.How did the author feel about making gingerbread houses at first?
A.It needed talent to learn. B.It was relaxing and interesting.
C.It made her family connected. D.It was time-wasting and unproductive.
29.What changed the author's opinion of gingerbread houses?
A.Her kids' encouragement. B.A gingerbread house contest.
C.The meaning behind gingerbread houses. D.Competition among gingerbread businesses.
30.What was special about the author's gingerbread house?
A.It had a surprising taste. B.It had a store-bought style.
C.It was made with the best shape. D.It was completely made by her family.
31.Why does the author keep the gingerbread house making tradition?
A.To remind her kids of the meaning of different festivals.
B.To make her kids keep family in their minds.
C.To encourage her kids to be creative.
D.To teach her kids to be unique.

If you are a fruit grower—or would like to become one—take advantage of Apple Day to see what's around. It's called Apple Day but in practice it's more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21,but since it has caught on,events now spread out over most of October around Britain.
Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see,and often taste,a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets,it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn't taste of anything special,it's still worth a try,as is the knobbly (多疙瘩的) Cat's Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else.
There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you'll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it,so it's a__pipe__dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.
At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games.
Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园).If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.
32.What can people do at the apple events?
A.Attend experts' lectures. B.Visit fruit-loving families.
C.Plant fruit trees in an orchard. D.Taste many kinds of apples.
33.What can we learn about Decio?
A.It is a new variety. B.It has a strange look.
C.It is rarely seen now. D.It has a special taste.
34.What does the underlined phrase “a pipe dream” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.A practical idea. B.A vain hope. C.A brilliant plan. D.A selfish desire.
35.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To show how to grow apples. B.To introduce an apple festival.
C.To help people select apples. D.To promote apple research.

My husband and I bought a small house in a good neighborhood. It was a oneandahalffloor house. We had to decorate it first because it was so old. I started to paint the walls and the doors outside. I also broke the broken fence (篱笆) and grew some flowers.
After I finished painting the walls of the bedroom upstairs inside, I brought up some water to wash the window. I washed the inside first, then opened the window and stepped out on the kitchen roof to wash the outside. The window was the kind that you couldn't open from the outside.
I was so devoted to my housework that I didn't realize the window gradually closed. After finishing cleaning; I tried to open the window but failed. Standing on my kitchen roof, I looked around the neighborhood. That was a lovely afternoon. Where were the neighbor's kids riding their bikes? They used to ride back from the park. Now no young voices shouted to one another. Carroll and Julie, an old couple, lived in the house at the corner. They were likely to be at home, but our kitchen was on the wrong side of our house for me to call them.
I sat down and thought about my situation. Even if someone came along, they couldn't walk in the house and open the window. The doors were locked by my husband before he went to work. “When you're working on an indoor project, anyone could open the door and come in. So just keep the doors closed.” he said. I sat there, thinking how stupid I was and what I should do.

You may like the fat, happy man who brings presents to kids on Christmas Eve. But do you know why he's called Santa Claus and why he is dressed in red? The history of Santa Claus begins in the 4th century with a man called Saint Nicholas. Saint Nicholas lived in Myra, which is now called Turkey. He came from a rich family, but he felt sorry for poor people and decided to give them all his money. Nicholas, though, was shy and didn't want people to know he gave them money. So he climbed onto the roofs of houses on Christmas Eve and dropped bags of money down their chimneys. He wore red clothes when he did this. Nicholas died in 340 AD.

But, five years ago, I saw a sign at the library announcing a gingerbread house contest. Every year since then, my kids and I have attended the gingerbread house contest, and every year we've won the family group. If you haven't made a gingerbread house before, I highly recommend you give it a try.
Our houses are not very beautiful ... my husband refers to it jokingly as “the slanty shanty.”
What I hope, too, is that this tradition will give my kids a way to make it feel like Christmas, no matter where they go in life. My hope is that they'll make gingerbread houses wherever they go in life and always think of home.
根据第二段中的“Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see,and often taste,a wide variety of apples.”
根据第二段中的“...it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio...is more of a curiosity than anything else.”
根据本段中的“One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you'll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it...”
根据文章第一段中的“If you are a fruit grower—or would like to become one—take advantage of Apple Day to see what's around.”和第二段中的“Visiting an apple event...”

38.答案与解析:A 由空后信息“red paper cuts,Chinese characters or red lanterns”可知,这些都是为过年所准备的装饰。故选A。
51.答案与解析:B 根据文章结尾的“the realization that only love lasts forever”可知,这里应该选择B项。
53.答案与解析:A 根据下文“understood some things that even much older people didn't”可知,母亲认为作者非常“聪明/明智”。
remind sb. of sth.

ThenIheardtherewasachildlaughingnearby. I stood up and looked down the street. Sure enough, there was a little boy. He was riding his bike. I told him that I was washing the window and it was shut. He looked up, saw me, and laughed. After all, it's not an everyday case that you see an old lady on a roof. I told him to ask my next-door neighbors to come and help me. “Of course,” he simply answered.
Theboywenttoaskforhelp. Soon Carroll and Julie came, bringing a long rope with them. And then I climbed down. I sincerely thanked them for their kind help. The doors were locked and the keys were in the house, so my lovely neighbors invited me to their house to celebrate my rescue with coffee, cookies, and laughter. A few hours later, my husband came back. I said thanks to them again and went home. From then on, I definitely believe that a far-off relative is not as helpful as a near neighbor.
