Parents and math teachers regularly asked by their schlaged charges whether math matters in real life nw have an answer.
In a study published by the Natinal Bureau f Ecnmic Research this week, Harvard Kennedy Schl Plicy Prfessr Jshua Gdman tk a lk at what happened t students whse high schl were required in the 1980s t increase the minimum level f cursewrk required t graduate. What he fund is that the students were mre likely t increase the number f math curses they tk as a result f the change in standards and that translated int higher earnings dwn the line.
Put simply: Abut 15 years after they graduated, the high schl graduates wh went t schl when these changes tk effect saw their average earnings increase abut 10% fr every extra year f math cursewrk. The findings may add fuel t the steady drum f educatin experts, plicy makers and thers calling fr an increased fcus n science and math educatin.
The increase in required math curses didn't necessarily prduce rcket scientists, Gdman ntes, because the extra cursewrk wasn't at a particularly high level. But becming familiar with and practicing relatively basic math skills allwed high schl graduates t pursue and excel at jbs that required sme level f cmputatinal knwledge, he said.
