    Fantastic flea market
As we start a brand new semester, we’re ready to push hard again. As an old saying goes: A handy tool makes a handy man. So, before burying ourselves in piles of books and assignments, we should get some new equipment. A perfect place for me to do this was at my school’s flea market during the summer holiday.
It was a sunny afternoon, and sunshine filled the campus. My fellow students and I rushed into the playground as soon as the bell rang, yelling and laughing. All the sellers were sitting at tables filled with second-hand books, stationery, and even handcrafted goods.
The flea market is an annual activity at my high school, but this was the first time I’d visited it. On the day, I bought two books for the coming semester from some graduates, who were full of passion for passing on their knowledge.
I tried to bargain with them and ended up with a 20 percent discount — I even asked for some advice on study methods. Although some of the books had turned yellow, I still felt happy about the experience.
Pacing back and forth past the stalls (摊位), I suddenly understood the value of flea markets and the reason why they’ve remained popular. For one thing, it’s a platform for selling and buying. People can sell things they don’t need any more or buy things at a lower price. For another, it also offers a channel of communication and is a great way to meet new people.
It may be going a bit too far to say that this flea market introduced me to a brand new way of life. However, it can’t be overlooked that this little market indeed brought great things into my life — old books and new friends.
4、What does the underlined sentence mean?
    A. One needs to make preparations to ensure success.
    B. An old man’s sayings are always telling the truth.
    C. Nothing can be accomplished without working hard.
    D. Treat others in the way you want to be treated.
5、What can be bought in the flea markets?
    A. Furniture. B. Clothes. C. Food. D. Books.
6、Why do people like flea markets?
    A. Because they can give away what they don’t need to others.
    B. Because graduates can help them make the right choice.
    C. Because they can buy what they need at a lower price.
    D. Because things people sell there are usually of better quality.
7、What’s the author’s attitude to the flea markets?
    A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Critical. D. Grateful.
April 13, 2021 — The FDA and CDC on Tuesday recommended that use of the Johnson& Johnson COVID-19 be paused after reports of blood clots(血栓) in patients receiving the shot, the FDA and CDC announced Tuesday.
In a statement, FDA said the agency is looking into six reported cases of a rare and severe blood clot occurring in patients who received the vaccine.
The pause is intended to give time to warn the public to this “very rare” condition, experts said during a joint CDC-FDA media report Tuesday.
“It was clear to us that we needed to alert the public,” Janet Woodcock, MD, acting FDA officer said. The move also will allow time for the healthcare community to learn what they need to know about how to diagnose, treat and report any additional cases.
The CDC will hold a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization(免疫) Practices on Wednesday to review the cases.
Of the six reported cases linked to the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, all are in women between the ages of 18 and 48 years, one woman died and another ended up in critical(严重的) condition. “I know the information today will be very concerning to Americans who have already received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine,” said Anne Schuchat, MD, principal deputy director at the CDC. “For people who got the vaccine more than one month ago, the risk is very low at this time,” she added. “For people who recently got the vaccine, in the last couple of weeks, look for symptoms.”
Headache, leg pain, belly pain and shortness of breath were among the reported symptoms. All six cases arose within 6 to 13 days of receipt of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
“I know this has been a long and difficult pandemic, and people are tired of the steps they have to take,” Schuchat said. “Steps taken today make sure the health care system is ready to diagnose, treat and report any additional cases and the public has the information necessary to stay safe.”
8、Why did FDA and CDC advise pausing the use of J&J COVID vaccine?
    A. People are tired of the steps they have to take during the pandemic.
    B. The public need to be warned of the danger caused by the vaccine.
    C. The CDC will hold a research to test the effectiveness of the vaccine.
    D. The healthcare community has already known how to deal with the cases.
9、What can we infer from Paragraph 6?
    A. Women may have a higher risk of blood clots aftering receiving the vaccine.
    B. The vaccine can be safely used to prevent older people from having COVID-19.
    C. Americans having already received vaccine needn’t care about the information.
    D. People will suffer from blood clots whenever they get the vaccine.
10、What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. A Long and Difficult Pandemic
    B. FDA, CDC Urge Pause of J&J COVID Vaccine
    C. The Communities Diagnose, Treat and Report Additional Cases
    D. Blood Clots Caused by J&J Vaccine
11、In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
    A. Education. B. Health. C. Culture. D. Science.
Like members of a street gang, male dolphins call on their buddies when it comes time to attack—or, in their case, to catch and defend females. A new study shows that they do this by learning the whistles, of their closest allies—sometimes more than a dozen animals—and remembering who consistently cooperated with them in the past. The findings indicate dolphins have a concept of team membership—previously seen only in humans—and may help reveal how they keep such complicated and tight-connected societies.
Male dolphins typically cooperate as a pair, which researchers call a “first-order alliance.” These small groups work together to find and catch a female. Males also cooperate in second-order alliances consisting of as many as 14 dolphins which defend against opponent(对手) groups attempting to steal the female. Some second-order alliances join together in even larger third-order alliances, providing males in these groups with even better chances of having allies nearby if enemies should attack.
But how do the males keep track of everyone in these complex groups?
Scientists have argued that their whistles are key. Every dolphin learns a unique signature whistle from its mother, which it keeps for life; dolphins recognize and remember each other’s whistles, similar to how we recognize each other’s names.
To further investigate how the male dolphins use their whistles, King and her colleagues turned to a population of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins. The team has tracked the animals with underwater microphones since 2016, enabling them to identify which dolphin produces which whistle.
The researchers expected that males hearing the whistle of their first-order alliance partners would respond most strongly. But when they reviewed the videos, they found the strongest responses came from males in the dolphins’ second-order alliances—animals who had a firm cooperative history of fighting off attackers with them.
“It was so striking,” says King, leading author of the study. “In 90% of experiments, dolphins who heard whistles of second-order alliance members turned immediately and directly toward the speaker.” The findings, she says, suggest dolphins—like humans—have a “social concept of team membership, based on an individual’s previous cooperative investment, rather than how good friends they are.”
12、What’s the main purpose of the first paragraph?
    A. To introduce the topic of how dolphins control their complex societies.
    B. To show the unique way male dolphins attract and keep female dolphins.
    C. To explain why male dolphins catch and defend females.
    D. To highlight the concept of team membership of human society.
13、What does the underlined word “allies” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
    A. Opponents. B. Relatives. C. Partners. D. Enemies.
14、What can be inferred from Paragraph 5 and 6?
    A. Dolphins don’t respond to their first-order alliance partners.
    B. The result of the study is beyond scientists’ expectation.
    C. Male dolphins in second-order alliances work together to steal the female.
    D. Mother dolphins often work together to feed and defend their children.
15、What can be learned from King’s words?
    A. Dolphins maintain their societies by making friends with each other.
    B. The second-order alliance members are in control of dolphins’ societies.
    C. Dolphins have a lasting friendly relationship among themselves.
    D. Dolphins’ team membership depends on their cooperation in the past.
