Florence, Rome, Venice. Beautiful cities to be sure, not to mention some of the planet’s most visited travel destinations. Yet this popularity means that for many, Italy’s premier hotspots are too expensive and overcrowded to visit. If you want to enjoy a true taste of Italy without the tourists, read our list of secret Italian towns you need to visit.
    Alberobello, Puglia
Alberobello is a lovely town near Bari. It is home to the Trulli — cone-shaped white buildings that look like houses straight out of a fairytale. The village is a maze of narrow streets and charming piazzas, while it also has a beautiful belvedere (观景台) that offers fabulous views of the town.
    Treviso, Veneto
Treviso is like a small Venice with fewer tourists and crowds. Its historical walled centre is dotted with medieval churches, cobblestone streets, red-brick palaces and tiny old canals that connect buildings, gardens and piazzas.
    Bologna, Emilia-Romagna
Bologna is one of the coolest towns in Italy. It is mostly frequented by students — Bologna is home to the oldest university in Europe and a whole lot of gastronomy fans, since it’s known to be the Italian food capital. Once you arrive, don’t forget to taste the delicacies of the area, such as lasagne, tortellini and, you guessed it, bolognese.
    Castelluccio, Umbria
Castelluccio is the highest village in the Apennine Mountains at 1,452m (4,764ft) above sea level. It’s a charming village with lovely squares that offer amazing views over the mountains and fields that blossom with violets and red poppies. The best time of the year to visit Castelluccio is in spring — from late May to early June.
21、Which town is regularly visited by students?
    A. Treviso. B. Bologna. C. Alberobello. D. Castelluccio.
22、What can we learn from the town Castelluccio?
    A. It offers charming natural views. B. It is the highest village in Italy.
    C. Its best visiting time is autumn. D. It is highly expensive to visit.
23、Who might be most interested in this text?
    A. Those who are fond of travelling alone.
    B. Those who have a true taste of large cities.
    C. Students who want to be further educated.
    D. Tourists who avoid being much crowded.
Phoenix Suns star forward Kevin Durant signed a lifetime contract with Nike on Friday, according to Boardroom, the media entity he co-owns.
Durant becomes the third basketball star to sign such a contract, behind all-time greats Michael Jordan and LeBron James. Soccer phenomenon Cristiano Ronaldo signed a similar deal in 2016.
Speaking to Boardroom, Durant said, “When I first signed with Nike, I couldn’t have dreamed of how far we’d go in this partnership. We’ve done amazing work creatively and philanthropically (慈善). We’ve traveled the world together and built a business that will now last forever.”
“I’m excited for the future and honored to be in rare company with this deal.” The 34-year-old also tweeted about the news, writing, “A true honor to be in the game for life with @Nike.”
When asked to comment on the deal to CNN, a spokesperson for Nike said Boardroom’s description of the arrangement was accurate. Nike did not provide any additional details about the contract.
Durant, a 13-time All-Star and two-time NBA champion, has had a relationship with the sportswear company dating back to 2007, his rookie season in the league. So far he has produced 15 editions of KD-branded signature shoes, with a 16th in production.
John Slusher, Nike’s executive vice president of global sports marketing, said to Boardroom of the contract, “As one of the best basketball players in the world, Kevin Durant has been an important part of the Nike family for the past 16 years. We look forward to continuing to serve the next generation of athletes together.”
According to Boardroom, Nike has contributed to Durant’s off-court work through support of the Durant Family Foundation and the player’s youth basketball program.
Durant next takes to the court with the Suns on Saturday in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Nuggets in Denver.

New York’s Central Park has a statue dedicated to him, and there’s even been a movie about him: a sled dog named Balto. Now he is the focus of a DNA study, 90 years after he died, to see what made the dog so famously tough (坚韧).
In 1925, this Siberian husky was part of an expedition in Alaska called the serum run, the goal of which was to bring life-saving medicine to young people that were threatened by a deadly disease in the remote town of Nome, over 600 miles away. Balto led the long-distance stretch, and wound up getting most of the honor.
After Balto’s death in 1933, his remains were preserved and put on display at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
“Balto’s fame and the fact that he was taxidermized gave us this cool opportunity 100 years later to see what that population of sled dogs would have looked like genetically and to compare him to modern dogs,” said Katherine Moon, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California.
Her team took skin samples from the dog’s belly and reconstructed its genome—the complete set of genes in an organism. They compared this genetic material with that of 680 contemporary dogs from 135 breeds.
Contrary to a legend that thought that Balto was half wolf — as suggested in an animated Universal Pictures film that came out in 1995 — this analysis found no evidence he had wolf blood. It turned out Balto shared ancestors with modern day Siberian Huskies and the sled dogs of Alaska and Greenland.
Moon’s team also compared Balto’s genes with the genomes of 240 other species of mammals.
This allowed researchers to determine which DNA fragments (片段) were common across all those species and have not therefore changed over the course of millions of years of evolution. This stability suggests that these fragments of DNA are associated with important functions in the animal, and that mutations (基因突变) there could be dangerous.
The bottom line from the research was that Balto had fewer potentially dangerous mutations than modern breeds of dogs did, suggesting he was healthier.
28、Why did Moon and her team study the DNA of Balto?
    A. Balto saved the lives of many people. B. Balto achieved a long-distance transport.
    C. Balto was a focus of the Central Park. D. Balto was amazingly tougher than others.
29、What does the underlined word “stability” in Paragraph 8 probably mean?
    A. Gene. B. Evolution. C. Toughness. D. Changelessness.
30、What did the research into the gene of Balto suggest?
    A. Balto had blood of wolves. B. Balto had fewer harmful mutations.
    C. Balto was a modern husky. D. Balto was a special mammal species.
31、What is this passage mainly about?
    A. A dog’s heroic act. B. A great honor to a dog.
    C. A DNA study of a tough dog. D. A new research into DNA.
Dreams of world peace are as old as wars. But as the women of Wales were recovering from World War I, they demanded peace in droves.
Still sorrowing the husbands, sons, and loved ones who fought in the war, in 1923 the Welsh League of Nations United (WLNU) drafted a petition (请愿书) at Aberystwyth University calling for a warless world.
The petition was signed by roughly three quarters of all the women in Wales and was said to be seven miles long. The document was then packed in a large oak chest and sent across the Atlantic.
It was the WLNU’s hope that America would join in their mission for peace, and so they toured with the petition across the country before President Calvin Coolidge gave it to the Smithsonian for preservation.
As the centennial anniversary of World War I approached, a plaque was found in the archives at the Temple of Peace in Cardiff mentioning the petition, but nobody knew what it was, says Mererid Hopwood, chair of the Women’s Peace Petition Partnership.
So in 2017, an email was sent to the Smithsonian inquiring about the status and location of the chest and its petition.
Having arrived at the National Library of Wales on March 29 this year, Hopwood received it along with other members of the Peace Petition Partnership and described opening the chest and finally getting to see its contents (内容) as an emotional moment.
Hopwood is hoping more Welsh citizens will have similar experiences now that the petition has returned to its original home. The petition will be digitized, along with all signatures and addresses, so the public can view it online and see if their grandmothers or previous tenants of their homes signed 100 years ago.
Clearly the world has not yet achieved the petition’s great goals, but Hopwood said the signatures gave her hope.
32、What was the petition meant for?
    A. A thirst for peace. B. An end to WWI.
    C. A fight for Wales. D. A call for apology.
33、What can we infer about the petition from Paragraph 3?
    A. Most Welsh signed on the petition.
    B. Welsh asked for Americans’ help.
    C. Welsh women wished for peace.
    D. Welsh women honored the war.
34、How did Hopwood like the reappearance of the petition?
    A. She could lead the petition. B. Her hope for peace is on fire.
    C. Welsh could be free of wars. D. It would cause a big storm.
35、What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
    A. To memorise World War I. B. To remind to value peace.
    C. To prove Welsh bravery. D. To inform reappearance of a petition.

M: To begin with, I’d like to tell a story from my own life. Several years ago, when my grandparents were well into their 80s, they were no longer able to care for themselves very well. My grandfather was afraid of leaving the only home they had known for the past 60 years. The idea of having to sell their home and move into a retirement home was an extremely painful experience for them. Indeed, old age for them, and many old Americans can mean not only the possible failure of one’s health, but the loss of identity and self-worth.

解析:W: Talking about personal relationships. Well, I’d naturally think of my relationship with my mother. Whenever I need help, my mother is always there for me. She often tells me that I can be anyone I want, as long as I’m confident of myself. She sees my talent and pushes me to do the best I possibly can. As I was growing up, we were often on the move. I had to admit that moving so often made me feel lonely. But my mother did everything she could to help me feel happy. In fact, so much traveling was really a good thing because it made us close. I respect my mother so much as she never treats me as a child, but as an equal. She gives me the freedom to make mistakes and to learn from them all. Unlike friendships that can fade or break, I know I’ll always be connected to my mother no matter what I face. She is not just a role model, but someone I love.

①根据上文 “It is never easy to deal with all the unwanted bullying (欺凌)even when you have done nothing wrong.(即使你没有做错任何事,要处理所有不想要的欺凌从来都不是一件容易的事)”以及后文“There is no simple solution when it comes to bullying but keep in mind that there is only one goal, to stop the situation from becoming worse.(当涉及到欺凌时,没有简单的解决方案,但请记住,只有一个目标,阻止情况变得更糟)”可知,后文与上文构成转折,指出不能任由欺凌发生,因此后句提到了应对校园欺凌的解决办法。
②根据上文 “Asking the bully to stop is sometimes an effective measure to deal with them. Sometimes when we do not speak up for ourselves(要求恶霸停下来有时是对付他们的有效措施。有时候当我们不为自己说话的时候)” 可知,本句承接上文,继续说明不为自己说话会到导致的后果:霸凌者继续他们的行为,认为我们是一个 容易的目标。故G选项“霸凌者继续他们的行为,认为我们是一个容易的目标”符合语境,故选G。
③根据后文 “If you are with your friends, or if you are in the company of someone, it is least likely that the bully will disturb you. We are not asking you to make a huge circle of friends, sometimes, all it takes is one loyal friend who will stay by you no matter what.(如果你和你的朋友在一起,或者你和别人在一起,恶霸最不可能打扰你。我们并不是要求你建立一个庞大的朋友圈,有时候,你所需要的只是一个无论如何都会陪伴在你身边的忠实朋友)”可知,后文提到了和朋友在一起会减少霸凌,说明形单影只的人常是被欺凌对象。故E选项“恶霸们通常会寻找孤独的人”符合语境,故选E。
④根据上文 “When you do not react to what they say or do no matter how hurtful it may be for you(当你对他们所说或所做的事没有反应时,不管这对你有多伤害)”以及后文“They think of it as a game, and when they get an emotional response from you it satisfies their ego.(他们认为这是一场游戏,当他们从你那里得到情感回应时,他们的自我就得到了满足)”可知,当你对欺凌者的任何言行不予回应的时候,欺凌者自然而然觉得无趣,否则情感回应只会让他们得到满足。
⑤根据上文 “Some of us are born comedians and we can turn almost anything into a joke. If you are one of these people, try to take advantage of your gift. Turn the situation the bully has created into a joke or just say something funny. This will break the bully 5s confidence and they will know that you are strong and sure about who you are.(我们中的一些人是天生的喜剧演员,我们几乎可以把任何事情变成笑话。如果你是这些人中的一员, 试着利用你的天赋。把恶霸制造的情况变成一个笑话,或者只是说一些有趣的事情。这将打破恶霸的信心, 他们会知道你很强大,很确定你是谁)”可知,本段意为当你面临欺凌时,你要善于运用你的风趣的智慧巧妙化解险情,让欺凌者知道你是一个坚强豁达之人,从而让欺凌者知难而退。故A选项“这会让他们退缩”符合语境,故选A。
