As scientists in the Netherlands tried to figure out how to build a super flying robot, they learnt from one of nature's flyers:the humble fruit fly(果蝇).And by building this robot, they've gained new insights into how the fly carries out one of its dangerous tasks.
The robot is called the DelFly Nimble. Its wingspan(翼展) is about a foot wide.It has four wings that can beat at 17 times per second, which appear very delicate because they're made of the same material as space blankets.
In the previous designs, they always had a tail, like a traditional airplane tail, said the main designer Matej Karasek. He's based at the Micro Air Vehicle Laboratory at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, and he and his colleagues published their findings in Science.
“In the previous generations, flapping wings drove the robot forward while the tail helped to guide and stabilise it.” he said. But now the DelFly Nimble is completely controlled by the wings. The challenge then was actually combining the control into the wing movement, and that's what we achieved,Karasek said.
In the latest generation, the wings can each move individually or rotate(旋转) around the body of the robot in order to maximise the machine's agility(灵活).“The robot can remain in one place in the air for about five minutes on a full battery or fly for more than a kilometre,”Karasek said.“And because the scientists are controlling all the movements, they can use the robot to learn more about how fruit flies actually carry out their dangerous tasks, which has caught the attention of biologists.”
4.Where did scientists get the creative idea of the flying robot?
A.From a fruit fly. B.From the birds' wings.
C.From some fruit. D.From an airplane.
    答案A

5.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 probably refer to?
A.A full battery. B.A flapping wing.
C.The DelFly Nimble. D.The humble fruit fly.
6.What interests biologists most about fruit flies?
A.That they are very tiny insects.
    B.That they conduct challenging tasks.
C.That they can be easily found in the world.
D.That they have light wings and fly quickly.
    答案B

    ImproveCloudSecurity
Sensitive customer data has constantly been found exposed on cloud servers without password protection. To ease the problem, database software makers have been trying to make security easier for cloud database managers. At the Enigma Conference in San Francisco,Kenn White,a security manager at database software maker MongoDB,will describe a new technique, called field level encryption,to make data safer on the cloud.
Field level encryption works by scrambling data before it's sent to a cloud database and rearranging it in order when the data is needed for use.The promise of the product is to protect the contents of a cloud database, even if bad guys access it.
MongoDB's new feature comes as more and more companies move user data to cloud servers, rather than run their own costly data centres. It was predicted that cloud computing would be a $214 billion industry by the end of 2019.That would be up more than 17% from 2018,when it was $182 billion.
Companies have rushed to the cloud without understanding all of the possible security consequences. Many companies have left countless databases exposed, revealing personal data.A database containing details about who lives in 80 million US households was left unprotected in 2019.
Database managers want to store their data in an unreadable form, but they also want to be able to find specific pieces of information in the database with a simple search term. For example, someone might want to look up health care patients by their Social Security numbers, even if those numbers are stored as random characters. To make this possible, field level encryption lets database managers encrypt a search term on their machine and send it to the database as a query. The database matches the encrypted version of the search term with the record it's storing and then sends it back to you.
This approach only works with specific kinds of data. For example, field level encryption isn't useful for long text entries, like notes in a patient's medical chart, because you can't search for individual words.
Still, for data like account numbers, passwords and government ID numbers, field level encryption protects data and maintains a usable database.
Most importantly,it's simple to set up.Database managers turn it on with a one-time configuration change when they set up the database.“That's really powerful,” White said in an interview.
8.The underlined word “scrambling” in paragraph 2 probably means “ ”.
    A.mixing B.collecting
    C.hiding D.storing
    答案A
故选A项。
9.What can field level encryption do?
A.Secure the safety of Internet pages.
B.Protect files with a unique style of storage.
C.Stop bad guys from accessing the database.
D.Enable companies to store files on the cloud.

The company will soon deploy 360 robot cleaners across a few hundred of its stores.Using maps plotted by human employees, the AI-powered cleaners will placidly traverse the aisles, sweeping the floor—just as human employees used to do.
Perhaps the most striking thing about these robot workers is how not-striking they are.Sci-fi movies suggest a future full of humanoid robots who appear with their horrible qualities. Now the future is coming into view, and it looks like a giant Roomba. It's easy to imagine walking past an Auto-C on a shopping trip without even noticing its presence.
AI has already started to become a part of our everyday life.In New Jersey this week, dozens of workers were hospitalised after a robot accidentally broke a can and some workers were stuck in damaging gas.Days earlier in California,an auto-piloted Tesla drove a drunk, sleeping driver down a highway, which no doubt did some potential risk to the other drivers on the road.Highway patrol officers figured out on the spot how to stop the AI car.
Of course, industrial accidents and drunk drivers existed well before AI.Tools with the power to release the burden of physical labour—horses, steam machines,self-driving cars—also come with the power to injure. And the presence of AI-powered machines just steps away from us is,for now, still a rare thing for most people.
But the nature of robots' coming into our daily life lives will make it harder to recognise—or object to—the bigger changes they bring later. The company insists that the robot cleaners give employees more time for customer service and other tasks.Critics point out that they could just as easily become an excuse to reduce staff and wages.
12.What is the difference between sci-fi movies and the reality?
A.Now the humanoid robots is hard to recognise.
B.Now people don't go to see the sci-fi movies.
C.Now the humanoid robots can tell lies.
D.Now it is easy to ignore the robots.
13.Why were some workers in hospital in New Jersey?
    A.They damaged the robot first.
B.The robot caused an accident on purpose.
C.The robot made a mistake by chance.
D.The robot driving them on the highway had an accident.
    答案C

14.What is the attitude of the author to AI?
    A.Supportive. B.Objective.
    C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.
15.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Artificial intelligence is bringing great effect to our daily life.
B.The company will soon use 360 robot cleaners across its stores.
C.We should say no to artificial intelligence.
D.Artificial intelligence is dangerous to our life.
    答案A

You may want to start paying attention to supermarket shelves because they are changing rapidly.Soon, when you walk by a shelf filled with produce,it may have electronic labels, personalised advertisements,RFID (radio frequency identification reader) technology and IOT (internet of things) sensors.Smart shelves with digital displays are coming to more supermarkets as paper labels are replaced with advanced technology.
Electronic labels will replace all the paper labels which announce the prices. 16 Electronic labels display prices, advertisements, nutritional data, coupons and videos.Imagine standing in front of a milk display and instantly comparing nutritional information among different brands while getting a flashing coupon that you scan with your phone.
17 For example, sensors installed in the shelves can tell when you approach them,so they can show you a deal on the same bread you purchased last week.Additionally,if you use a store's app to create a shopping list, the smart shelves can interact with the list and show you where to find the items you want.
RFID usually has a tag that can transmit and receive data. 18 In supermarkets,RFID technology can help retailers manage.RFID tags can alert store assistants when the shelves are empty and need restocking or when someone has put the wrong items on a shelf.
IOT sensors have many potential uses in a supermarket. 19 The sensors can check temperatures in freezers and cases to make sure they are correct. They can also collect data from smart shelves. The technology can help supermarkets understand which products appeal to consumers and can affect how stores arrange items on display.
20 From digital displays that show instant price changes to advertisements linked to your shopping list, you can expect the technology to become more personalised.
A.One of the most basic is temperature control.
B.Smart shelves will change how you shop in the future.
C.Smart shelves can interact with apps on a customer's smartphone.
D.They can automatically scan your purchases and make shopping faster.
E.It uses radio waves to identify items and transmit information about them.
F.They will make it easier to change the prices in an entire store within minutes.
G.Some consumers will share their personal information and purchase history to score a deal.

Space exploration has always been the province of 21 :The human imagination readily soars where human ingenuity (独创力)struggles to follow.AVoyagetotheMoon, often cited as the first science fiction story, was written by Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac.Cyrano was dead and buried for three centuries 22 the first manned rockets started to fly.
In 1961,when President Kennedy declared that America would send a man to the moon by the 23 end, those words, too, had a dreamlike meaning. They resonated(产生共鸣) with optimism and ambition in much the same way as the most famous 24 speech of all, delivered by Martin Luther King Jr.two years later.By the end of the decade, both visions had yielded concrete results and 25 American society. And yet in many ways the two dreams ended up at odds 26 each other. The fight for racial and economic equality is intensely pragmatic (实用的) and immediate in its impact. The urge to explore space is just the opposite. It is figuratively and literally otherworldly in its 27 .
When the dust settled, the space dreamers lost out. There was no grand follow-up to the Apollo missions. The technologically compromised space shuttle programme has just come to an end, with no 28 .The perpetual argument is that 29 are tight, that we have more pressing problems on Earth.Amid the current concerns about the federal deficit, reaching towards the actors seems a dispensable luxury— 30 saving one-thousandth of a single year's budget would solve our problems.
But human ingenuity struggles on.NASA is developing a series of robotic probes that will get the most bang from a buck. They will serve as modern Magellans, 31 the solar system out for whatever explorers follow, whether man or machine. On the flip side, companies like Virgin Galactic are plotting a bottom-up assault on the space dream by making it a reality to the public.Private spaceflight could lie within 32 of rich civilians in a few years.Another decade or two and it could go mainstream.
The space dreamers end up benefiting all of us—not just because of the way they expand human knowledge,or because of the spin-off 33 they produce, but because the two types of dreams depend on each other. Both Martin Luther King and John Kennedy appealed to the idea that humans can 34 what were once considered inherent limitations.Today we face seeming challenges in energy, the environment, health care.Tomorrow we will transcend these as well, and the dreamers will deserve a lot of the credit. The more evidence we collect that our species is 35 greatness, the more we will actually achieve it.

It was a Saturday afternoon. The colour of the sky was changing, first light gray, then dark gray, and finally dark and dense. The wind was blowing heavily, and the trees were swaying in the strong wind.It began to rain cats and dogs.Soon, the road was filled with puddles from the rain.
On such a stormy afternoon,my mother took my five-year-old brother,Christopher, and me to a new big toy store she had read about in the newspaper.“So many toys,” the advertisement had shouted in full and flashy colour,“that we had to get a huge warehouse to fit them all!”
Christopher and I couldn't have been more excited. We ran across the parking lot, through the cold and biting rain,as fast as our little legs could carry us.We left our mother outside to battle with the frustrating umbrella, which never worked when she wanted it to.“Christine!Take care of your young brother!” Mother shouted at the top of her voice.
“Christine!I'm going to find the Lego section! There's a new pirate ship I want, and I have four dollars!Maybe I can buy it!” Christopher exclaimed and ran off excitedly.I only half heard him.I took a right turn and,to my wide-eyed delight, found myself in the midst of the Barbie(芭比) World.
I was studying a Barbie and doing some simple math in my head when suddenly an earthshaking clap of thunder roared from the storm outside.I jumped at the noise, dropping the doll to the floor. The lights flickered(闪烁) once and died, covering everything in a blanket of blackness.Thunder continued to shake the sky and lightning illuminated the store for seconds, casting frightening shadows on my mind.
    “Ohno,where'sChristopher?”Ithought.

    “Christine,I'mhere.”

“Ohno, where'sChristopher?”I thought.Scared and frozen on the spot,I felt the need to see,hug my brother and make sure he was all right. My stomach twisted.I ran up and down the passage in the dark, panic filling my small chest and making it difficult to breathe.I knocked into displays of candies and tripped over toys, while calling my brother's name like crazy.Anxious as I was,I could not find him.Tears of frustration and fear trickled down my face, but I continued to run.
“Christine,I'mhere.”Excitement took my breath away — there in the Lego aisle I found Christopher. He was standing alone, perfectly still, next to the pirate ship set.I began to cry in relief, throwing my arms around him and hugged him tightly. He hugged me back, saying,“I knew if I waited here,Christine, you would be able to find me.” Then,I took his hand in mine and we went to look for our mother, who must be desperately searching the store for us.
