San Francisco is a spectacular city.It is famous for its steep hills,earthquakes and the prison island of Alcatraz,but its most famous landmark is the Golden Gate Bridge.This is one of the most beautiful bridges in the world.It has a simple,graceful shape,and is painted in an attractive orange.

Work on the Golden Gate Bridge started in 1933 and continued for the next four years.The total cost of the bridge was $35 million.At that time,its span of 1,280 metres made the Golden Gate Bridge the longest suspension(悬浮) bridge in the world.The bridge is 2.7 kilometres long and,at the middle point,67 metres above the water of San Francisco Bay.The main cables that hold the bridge are one metre in diameter.The bridge can safely withstand(抵挡) winds of up to 160 kilometres an hour,and it can sway(摇摆) as much as 8 metres in strong winds.
