Prateek Sharma was born into a family of farmers. After 10 years of being a chief manager of a bank,he did a good job and earned a good pay.But Prateek couldn't continue the corporation life with ease,as his heart was always in farming. So he worked as a banker on weekdays and on weekends he travelled 100 km to get to his 5-acre farm in Dhaba Khurd.
By the end of 2015,Prateek had set up a house on his farm to grow off-season vegetables.Prateek thought he'd quit his job once he was able to earn enough from farming, but this wasn't an easy decision to make. This was because costs to grow these vegetables were very high, along with the fact that farmers weren't a part of the value chain and thus couldn't decide the price of their own vegetables.
Fortunately,Prateek met Vinay Yadav, another educated farmer. They then decided to start their own value chain and sell their vegetables and grains, while skipping the middlemen. The variety of vegetables they grew wasn't enough,so they decided to form a group of farmers.
Once the plan was ready, the group was registered by the name of Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO).However, the trial failed in the first year as most of the farmers were grain growers and had limited knowledge of growing vegetables. However, the largest reason was the switch to organic from chemical.
Luckily, once the soil was used to organic methods, the next round of crops was successful and the FPO had a good amount of produce. So at the end of 2017,Prateek finally quit his job and devoted all his time to farming. Now he's successful and recently his team has started two farmer resource centres at Dhaba Khurd and Nathrula Canj.
4.Why did Prateek have trouble continuing his life as a banker?
A.He felt it so boring to be a banker.
B.He almost never satisfied his boss.
C.He found farming easier to do well.
D.He was enthusiastic about farming.
5.Why was it difficult for Prateek to decide on quitting his job?
A.The price of organic products was low.
B.The income from farming wasn't much.
C.He had no money to put into farming.
D.He found farm produce hard to sell.
6.What did Prateek and Vinay Yadav set about doing after they met?
A.Building their own marketing system.
B.Raising the price of their products.
C.Switching from chemical to organic.
D.Adding the kinds of vegetables grown.
答案A
故选A项。
7.What mainly resulted in the failure of FPO's first year trial?
A.Their no experience in growing vegetables.
B.Their poor management on the employees.
C.The soil was not adapting to organic farming.
D.The wrong ways of doing organic farming.
C
I was 63 years old when I lost my job. After many years of rushing between my home and my job, between raising kids and pushing ahead professionally,it was quiet. In those silent spaces,I had time to ask myself what I really cared about. Finally I came to an answer.I cared about young people's future.Burdened by a huge education debt, unable to find a job, many were feeling hopeless. They were in danger of becoming a lost generation.
But what contribution could I make to creating a better future for the next generation?I started a free programme in which coaches and mentors(顾问) would volunteer to help unemployed young people launch their careers.I enjoyed mentoring younger people at work, and this fitted with my desire to assist the next generation.Through my coaching contacts,25 wonderful life and career coaches signed up to volunteer.
The young people find us through word of mouth.Coaching is done by phone,so location doesn't matter.
So far over 55% of 220 graduates have found desirable jobs within a few months of finishing the programme.Ninety percent have rated the coaching positively and say they are closer to their goals.
Over the course of 12 one-hour periods, the coaches help them figure out what work aligns with(使一致) their values, skills and passions, and then assist them in making a plan to move forward—including helping them with resumes, interviews, and job search strategies.
In exchange for the free coaching,we ask all the young participants to “pay it forward” to someone who needs their help.We explain that we won't know whether they do or not,but the potential is there to create a ripple effect of kindness spreading outward in unforeseen ways.In fact,a number of them have offered to mentor other graduates in the programme.

A.The programme is beneficial to all the participants.
B.Most participants fail to land good jobs.
C.High attention is brought to the programme.
D.The programme is quite a success.

Walking home from work with a family friend,I found myself in a discussion about her daughter's going to college.
It started with the mother telling me that she had no money to help her daughter go through college, which led the mother to push the community college fiercely. She then started to say how she had been pushing “high-paying” fields on her daughter—doctor, engineer, lawyer, etc. When I asked her if that was what her daughter had interest in,she said no.I asked her what the point was to push her daughter into something that she didn't like, and she responded with,“I just want her to make a good fortune.”
After hearing her words,I would like to state that money is not everything.A high-paying job means nothing if you are miserable.I used to do a high-paying job,but it was very tiring and I had no time of my own.I didn't like it at all.Though the pay was good,I was not happy.
So I'd like to tell parents, please do not force your children into a major or a career just because you think they are going to make a lot of money. They would feel terrible for taking that major or job just to comfort you.The worst part is the feeling of guilty when they decide to change that major to something they actually want or when they quit that job.
Being a member of a generation who are willing to give absolutely everything to our kids,we know we just hope our children can live happy lives. Please do not force a career path on our children just because we think it is good for them.Give our children advice, but don't force them.
12.What do we know about that mother?
A.She thought highly of the community college.
B.She got along very well with her daughter.
C.She couldn't afford her daughter's college fees.
D.She wanted to be a doctor when she was young.
13.The mother chose the fields for her daughter mainly because .
A.her daughter really liked those fields
B.she thought those fields were interesting
C.those fields wouldn't cost much at college
D.she considered them to be high-paying fields
14.Why did the writer mention her story in paragraph 3?
A.To prove that high-paying jobs mean nothing.
B.To show that not all high-paying jobs are satisfying.
C.To prove that high-paying jobs make people miserable.
D.To show that low-paying jobs are better than high-paying jobs.
答案B

15.From the text,we can infer that the writer would most probably advise parents to .
A.choose the best major or career for their children
B.avoid giving their children advice on their major or career
C.let their children make the final decision on their major or career
D.give everything to their kids to make sure they'll have a good future

It was my first job, working as a temporary sales girl during the Christmas rush at Richardson's,the finest jewelry store in our city.
The job was very important to me.Dad had passed away and Mother and I did not have enough money to live on in those hard Depression years.I worked in the diamond department. My duties were to arrange the goods, keep them clean, and run errands(跑腿).It was interesting work that I enjoyed thoroughly.
As Christmas drew near, the days became more rushed, but also more exciting. One afternoon,Miss Allan, head of the diamond department, asked me to get her the diamond ring from the end showcase.I hurried back, with the ring in my hand when I noticed a man on the other side of the row of showcases. He was tall and in his early thirties. But it was the expression on his face that stopped me.He looked bitter, angry and confused. From his well-cut but worn-out suit,I could tell he was one of thousands trained for jobs they could no longer find.He gazed at the beautiful stones with the despair of a man whose right to earn them had been taken away.I had a sudden feeling of sympathy. But I had other things on my mind and soon forgot about him.
A few minutes later Miss Allan called for me again. This time for the clip(夹子) that went with the ring. The clip was at the very front of the window.I got it.But just as I was backing out,my sleeve caught on the corner of a tray(盘子) of diamonds. The tray started to fall, and six magnificent diamond rings rolled across the floor.
Down on my knees,I collected five rings with the greatest speed and put them in the tray. But I couldn't find the sixth!I thought it must have slipped through the tiny opening between the showcase and the window.I ran around the counter and looked down.It wasn't there.Just then, out of the corner of my eye I saw the tall man moving quietly toward the door of the shop,a few yards away.At that moment I knew that he had the ring.He had been standing at the only spot to which it could have rolled.I reached him just as he got to the door.
“Excuseme,please,”Isaid.
“Whatdoyouwant?”herepeated.
“Excuseme, please,”Isaid. He turned, and for a minute neither of us spoke. To drop a tray of rings was bad,but that would be forgiven. To lose a ring was unthinkable.“What do you want?” he asked. He seemed a bit nervous. What should I say?Disaster could come to me from what I was sure he'd done.Yet I felt he hadn't come into the store planning to steal.Perhaps he had just wanted to get warm.
“Whatdoyouwant?”herepeated.Suddenly I had the answer.Mother always told me people are generally kind.I didn't think this man would want to hurt me.“This is my first job,” I said softly.“Jobs are hard to get now.” He searched my face and then smiled gently.“But I'm sure you'll do very well in yours.May I wish you luck?” He put his hand out and clasped mine.“Good luck to you,” I whispered. He opened the door and disappeared into the crowd. Then I turned and put the sixth diamond in the tray.
