One steamy July afternoon in central Arkansas, my house caught fire unfortunately. I was lost for words to describe the feeling of seeing my home going up in flames. But the panic that filled my shocked heart in that awful moment was for the nine cats that shared my home after being rescued from abandonment.
The firefighters arrived in time, but the smoke had already caused deaths. I examined and kissed each cat goodbye, extremely grateful that they had passed away gently, without injuries or burns. After staying with a friend for weeks, I was relocated to a furnished apartment. One evening I was occupied in writing a mystery novel when a “meow” sounded from outside the apartment door. Was it my mind playing tricks again? More than once I had heard, seen or felt the brush of one of my departed furry roommates. The meow grew louder. Curious, I opened the door.
Sitting on the doorstep was a kitten(小猫)with a black coat and alert eyes. A neighbor picked him up and began petting him. When I remarked how cute her kitten was she explained that he had been born under a bridge and looked around for food. This kitty-loving neighbor then asked if I was interested in giving him a home. My immediate reaction was a seemingly humorous “that’s all I need!“ After all. my determination had been well reasoned and remained firm. But without hesitation she put the adorable kitten down. I thanked her, determined to just let him stay until a real home could be found.
That night, as I slid between the sheets of the bed in the still unfamiliar apartment, the energetic little fur ball jumped onto the bed yawned dramatically, and nestled by my side.
That was the first night since the fire that I actually slept. Needless to say, the cat community knew the precise treatment for healing far better than I. The name Starlight (Star for short) just occurred to me because that night he brought some light back into my life.
In the five years since the fire, we have been through a lot, Starlight and I. We returned to the house, managed to keep the business alive, brought the mystery novel to the final edits before it’s submitted in the hope of publication. Star helped me through a massive, yet untraditional, healing of spirit. The memories of the kitties that passed away in the fire now spark only warmth in my heart and win some smiles. Every single day. I appreciate the serendipitous(有意外收获的)nature of the Universe that sent me hope in the form of a little black fur ball.
So take a little advice from my furry friend: no matter how hopeless things may become or how fixed your resolution may be, open the door whenever opportunity knocks. It just might be a star to light your way.

Bad drivers in the District could soon get a serious warning sent straight to their cellphones. The city is working to identify drivers with a history of traffic violations, such as speeding and red-light carnet tickets, to send messages alerting them of their history of infractions (违规) while warning of their risks of getting into a fatal crash.
City officials say they hope the pointed messages (定制信息) will deter dangerous road behaviors. "Wu know that there is a subset of drivers that are putting others at serious risk with excessive speeding and red-light running," said Jeff Marootian, director of the city's Department of Transportation, one of the agencies leading the effort. "We're hoping that this creative approach can ultimately reduce serious injury and fatality crashes.”
"This is a creative approach that we haven't tried before, and we think that it is worth the effort," Marootian said. The concept, which D.C. officials say is a first among cities nationwide, is the latest effort to target dangerous drivers in a city where serious and fatal crashes are on the rise. City leaders said evidence shows drivers with multiple traffic violations are more likely to be involved in crashes.
Researchers have studied the relationship between repeat traffic offenders and serious collisions (碰撞),with some data suggesting a strong connection between the two. But some researchers also have pointed to other factors at play, such as the amount of time the driver spends on the road and exposure to traffic enforcement (强制性)systems.
A team from The Lab led by Muriel E. Bowser, is examining data from the District's automated traffic enforcement program to predict a driver's likelihood of being involved in a serious crash. It will create a campaign that could include text messages and mail sent to a sample of high-risk drivers. "We will evaluate whether drivers who receive these messages have fewer red-light violations, speeding violations, and Ultimately, clashes, compared to the group of high-risk drivers who do not receive the messages," according to The Lab.
The program is among the latest road-safety measures with the purpose of cutting the growing number of traffic injuries and fatalities. Although the new messages appear as a warning to higher-risk drivers city officials said the intent is to educate the recipient, Marootian said there is no violation or fine attached to the message and that the campaign is to use data to directly communicate with individual drivers. Some questioned whether the message will work.
    46. What does the underlined word “deter” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A. Prevent. B. Change.
    C. Control. D. Handle.
    47. What do we know about the approach to sending pointed messages?
    A. It may put the drivers at serious risk of crashing.
    B. It can identify drivers with records of traffic accidents.
    C. It will completely reduce serious injury and fatality crashes.
    D. It is the newest attempt in response to the rising crashes.
    48. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
    A. Traffic offenders always cause serious accidents.
    B. New drivers bear less blame for serious collisions.
    C. Different elements may contribute to serious accidents.
    D. Traffic offenders should spend too much time on the road.
    49. How do the team from The Lab know whether the approach works?
    A. By sending messages to the drivers.
    B. By comparing the impact of the approach on two groups.
    C. By predicting the possibility of a driver's involvement in a crash.
    D. By checking the response of the receivers who get the messages.
    50. What is the text mainly about?
    A. A traffic report. B. A scientific method.
    C. A professional survey. D. A teaching program.
A 47. B 48. C 49. B 50. B

根据下文“‘Wu know that there is a subset of drivers that are putting others at serious risk with excessive speeding and red-light running,’ said Jeff Marootian, director of the city's Department of Transportation, one of the agencies leading the effort. ‘We're hoping that this creative approach can ultimately reduce serious injury and fatality crashes.’”( 吴知道,有一部分司机过度超速和闯红灯,给其他人带来了严重的风险,”该市交通运输部(Department of Transportation)主任杰夫·马鲁提安(Jeff Marootian)说。
根据第一段“The city is working to identify drivers with a history of traffic violations, such as speeding and red-light carnet tickets, to send messages alerting them of their history of infractions (违规) while warning of their risks of getting into a fatal crash. ”( 该市正在努力识别有超速、闯红灯等交通违章记录的司机,以便向他们发送信息,提醒他们违章记录,同时警告他们发生致命车祸的风险。)由此可知,发送指定信息的方法可以识别有交通违章记录的司机。故选B。
    【48题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Researchers have studied the relationship between repeat traffic offenders and serious collisions (碰撞),with some data suggesting a strong connection between the two. But some researchers also have pointed to other factors at play, such as the amount of time the driver spends on the road and exposure to traffic enforcement (强制性)systems. ”( 研究人员研究了多次违规者和严重碰撞之间的关系,一些数据表明两者之间有很强的联系。但一些研究人员也指出,其他因素也在起作用,比如司机在道路上花费的时间和接触交通执法系统的时间。)由此可推断,造成严重事故有很多不同的因素,故选C。
    【49题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“‘We will evaluate whether drivers who receive these messages have fewer red-light violations, speeding violations, and ultimately, clashes, compared to the group of high-risk drivers who do not receive the messages,’ according to The Lab. ”( 该实验室表示:“我们将评估收到这些信息的司机,与没有收到这些信息的高危司机相比,是否有更少的闯红灯、超速和最终发生碰撞。”)由此可知,实验室是通过对比这一方法对两组司机的影响来判断这一方法是否有起作用的,故选B。
    【50题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Bad drivers in the District could soon get a serious warning sent straight to their cellphones. The city is working to identify drivers with a history of traffic violations, such as speeding and red-light carnet tickets, to send messages alerting them of their history of infractions (违规) while warning of their risks of getting into a fatal crash. ”( 华盛顿特区的高危司机很快就会收到直接发送到手机上的严重警告。该市正在努力识别有超速、闯红灯等交通违章记录的司机,以便向他们发送信息,提醒他们违章记录,同时警告他们发生致命车祸的风险。)和第二段最后一句“We're hoping that this creative approach can ultimately reduce serious injury and fatality crashes.”( 我们希望这种创造性的方法最终能减少严重伤害和致命事故。”)以及第三段第一句“‘This is a creative approach that we haven't tried before, and we think that it is worth the effort,’ Marootian said.
题干中常含infer(推断),suggest(暗示),imply(暗示),indicate(暗示),conclude(推断,得出结论)等词语。 如小题3,根据第四段“Researchers have studied the relationship between repeat traffic offenders and serious collisions (碰撞),with some data suggesting a strong connection between the two. But some researchers also have pointed to other factors at play, such as the amount of time the driver spends on the road and exposure to traffic enforcement (强制性)systems. ”( 研究人员研究了多次违规者和严重碰撞之间的关系,一些数据表明两者之间有很强的联系。但一些研究人员也指出,其他因素也在起作用,比如司机在道路上花费的时间和接触交通执法系统的时间。)由此可推断,造成严重事故有很多不同的因素,故选C。

Why are so many people unhappy in their jobs? There are two primary reasons. First, some people are convinced that earning a living is wasting time that they could spend enjoying themselves or uncovering their true talents.
If this is the case with you, recall your last long vacation. Was it two weeks of complete enjoyment? More likely it was a week and a half of fun in the sun, with another half a week of “Boy, I can’t wait to get back to work.”If you didn’t feel such vacation blues, then imagine taking a leave of absence. You could use it to work on a novel, attend classes or just sit around watching TV. At the end of three months, in all likelihood, your self-respect would be at an all-time low. While all work and no play are not good, all play and no work are disastrous. We need to feel we are accomplishing something. We also need some form of order in our lives.
The second and perhaps more common reason for people not to like their work is that they feel trapped. Once you’ve been at a company for five years and get married, have a mortgage(抵押贷款)and a child, you often feel you have very little choice about jumping ship if things aren’t turning out as you’d planned. A steady paycheck can be the biggest restrict of all. People hate having to do something because they have no other choice.
If you find yourself hating your job, your option takes the form of an up-to-date resume(简历). You might also take a weekly glance through the help-wanted section, and make some visits to industry functions where low-key networking can take place. You’re not giving up on your current job. Rather, you are providing yourself with an option. If things get unbearable at work, you could jump ship.
At the core of adopting a positive attitude to your workplace is, above all, assuming responsibility for your own situation. Most people feel controlled by their environment, but they really aren’t. They have to learn to manage that environment so they can get from it what they need.
    51. Why do some people believe that working is wasting time?
    A. They think it can’t make them happy and display their natural abilities.
    B. They think it prevents them from accompanying their families.
    C. It can’t guarantee they can get the payoff satisfying their needs.
    D. It makes them have no time to do their private things at will.
    52. The second main reason for people’s unhappiness in their jobs is that they feel________.
    A. they have been working in a company for too long B. they have no other way out but to keep working
    C. they have to work to pay off their debts D. they are not permitted to change a job
    53. With an up-to-date resume ready as an option, you may feel better at your job because________.
    A. you have made a decision on your own
    B. you have done wonders in your current job
C you have chance to choose between two alternatives
    D. you have chance to glance through the help-wanted section
    54. It can be inferred that the author________.
    A. thinks holding an “up-to-date resume” is the best way to remove the unhappiness in one’s job
    B. can hardly tolerate one’s complete enjoyment of life
    C. believes that one cannot change his/her environment
    D. will support the idea that one should make a balance between working and enjoying life
    55. What is the author’s attitude towards “self-respect”?
    A. Cautious. B. Negative. C. Supportive. D. Unconcerned.
A 52. B 53. C 54. D 55. B
