In October 2002, Winston Churchill was chosen by the British people as “the greatest British man”. The great British men behind him were Shakespeare, Newton, and Darwin. But many people did not know that Churchill was thought to be a bad boy when he was a child.
At the age of seven, Winston Churchill was sent to a boarding(寄宿) school named St. George. The school rules were strict. He often got serious punishment. Churchill cried loudly and kicked wildly when he was beaten. At the end of the term, he returned home with a report card and pains all over his body. The report card said that he was “naughty”(顽皮的).
At the age of twelve, his father sent him to Harrow Public School, which was famous for training English gentlemen. Because he failed the entrance exam, he was placed in the last group of the class with worst grades. He fell behind the others in study. He gave many people the impression of low energy, strangeness, and lawlessness. Fortunately, he still had a friend, his grandfather. The American of great wealth who had experienced the world said, “Let him go! As long as boys have the chance to show their talents, they are sure to become better.” Churchill kept the words of his grandfather in mind, and secretly looked for it in his heart.
Many years later, Churchill was already a successful politician and writer. He worked as a reporter, as Secretary of the Navy, and as Prime Minister (首相) of the United Kingdom. (2021·江苏泰州·统考中考真题)
Just the other day, I was in a bookshop and found a book named How to make friends with foreigners. As a Canadian living in China for a year, I was curious to see what kind of advice a Chinese writer giving on this matter.
One piece of advice really caught my attention and, I must say, made me feel quite angry. In the writer’s opinion, foreigners are an "opportunity (机会)" to improve your oral English; whenever you see a foreigner, American or English, you should practise speaking English with him or her. If the foreigner doesn’t want to answer your questions, then he or she is a rude person who you wouldn’t want to spend time with anyway. I think this advice is not only incorrect, but also may harm the relationship between Chinese and foreigners in China.
Like most other "Lao Wai" living in China, I know how lonely one can sometimes feel living in a culture different from our own familiar (熟悉的) ways. However, I simply accept as part of being here. So far my time in China has been rewarding. I have improved my Chinese language skills, learned about one of the fastest developing countries in the world today and made some very close Chinese friends.
However, I have also met many Chinese people who consider me only as an "opportunity" to improve their oral English. I have had people following me from town to my flat to trouble me to teach them English. I have had complete strangers throwing articles or speeches in my face, insisting that I help them with the English translation. I have had people asking me non-stop questions for half an hour at the weekly English Corner ...
Friendship for a lot of foreigners is about spending time with someone whose company (陪伴) they really enjoy. So if there is any advice to give on making and keeping friendships with foreigners, I would say that it is this: Treat foreigners as people, not opportunities. Expect to make friendships step by step, over a period of time, not in a rush. ________ If your only reason for becoming fiends with a foreigner is to improve your English, then you will probably find that you don’t have a foreign friend for long.
14.Where is the writer of this passage from?

A.his advice may make foreigners angry
B.it is rude of you to ask a foreigner questions
C.you should choose a good foreigner to practise English with
D.don’t waste time on a foreigner who doesn’t answer your questions
17.In the fourth paragraph, the writer uses "I have had…" three times, because ________.
A.he had no better sentences to express his ideas.
B.he wanted to show how he hated to make friends with Chinese.
C.he wanted to show how he hated to be treated as an “opportunity”.

(2022·江苏泰州·统考中考真题)Ancient art doesn’t have to be boring. Technology in the 21st century can help to bring it to life by combining(融合) the best of the old and the new.
Along the River During the Qingming Festival
Walking into the China Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, people were amazed by seeing a huge digital(数码的) painting. Scientists digitized(数码化) the famous painting Along the River During the Qingming Festisal by Chinese artist Zhang Zeduan.
The original(原先的) painting shows life during the Northern Song period and it includes many details of ancient Chinese customs, lifestyles and technology.
Farmers work in the fields, sailors move around their boats and people eat and do business in restaurants. Parts of the background are also animated(做成动画). You can see the wind blowing through the trees and across the water. These animations perfectly combine modern technology and ancient art.
Digital technology allows today’s artists to express their ideas in ways that ancient artists would not believe possible. Techniques such as animation and 3D digital projection(投影) make art come alive.
Dunhuang Cave Paintings
Dunhuang Caves, which are protected ancient treasures in the Gobi desert in Northwest China, are filled with paintings and sculptures with lasting value. This artwork was created over a period of around 1,000 years.
The good news is for art lovers who cannot travel and for the caves. Scientists have created a 360-degree, 3D digital projection of the caves, which makes the artwork come alive. There is also a function(功能) that lets viewers zoom in and enjoy the paintings and sculptures in greater detail.

Poems from Tang and Song dynasties, operas from Yuan dynasty, and novels from Ming and Qing dynasties are very famous in China’s history. Today, I’d like to recommend Song of Autumn, one of the poems by Liu Yuxi(772-842), a famous poet and writer in the mid Tang dynasty.
Just as shown in the first line of the poem, most ancient poets liked to describe autumn as a sad time, but in this poem the season appears differently. In Liu’s eyes, autumn, full of life and hope, is even better than spring morning. He describes the bright scene of a crane riding the clouds and flying into the blue sky.
With his poems paying special attention to expressing personal feelings, as well as the daily life of common people, Liu wrote poems with beautiful music-like words. You may feel it in this poem. Though being translated thoughtfully by experienced Xu Yuanchong, the poem still reads not so beautifully as that in Chinese. I personally think that English is sometimes not so powerful as Chinese.
Here is another example, in Liu’s essay An Eulogium on a Humble Cell(《陋室铭》), with less than 100 words, he shows a lively picture of his humble cell. However, it also shows how he was pleased with the poor and simple life. People may find it strange that one can feel happy living in such a humble cell. Learning from his famous sentence, “be fragrant because of my virtues”(斯是陋室, 惟吾德馨), I think to be a respectable man is more important than to live in big houses, to wear beautiful clothes, to enjoy delicious food, and even to gain knowledge.
42.Which dynasty is the poem Song of Autumn written in?
A.Song. B.Yuan. C.Ming. D.Tang.
43.How was autumn in Liu’s eyes at that time?
A.He thought it was a sad time.
B.He thought that autumn was rather cloudy.
C.He thought Spring was better.
D.He thought autumn was a hopeful season.
44.Which of the following is the feature of Liu Yuxi’s works according to the passage?
A.Expressing personal feelings.
B.Describing daily life of young people.
C.Picturing blue sky and a crane.
D.Writing songs according to music.
45.How did Liu feel about living in a humble cell in the writer’s opinion?
A.Strange. B.Unhappy. C.Satisfied. D.Lonely.
46.Influenced by Liu Yuxi, which of the following does the writer think is the most important?
A.To be a respectable man.
B.To live in a big house.
C.To wear beautiful clothes.
D.To gain more knowledge.

Now, primary students learn cooking at school. It has been discussed by teachers and parents. Some think that it is a useful skill for students, while others think it’s a waste of time, some even think it’s just a show. But do they really understand cooking?
It’s been said that good cooking is an art form. The truth is that it’s much more than that. Then talking about different foods from all around the world, or cultures and histories of dishes, students are connected to the world and learning history and culture in a new field. Then learning cooking, students measure(称量) materials from time to time, or find oil and water don’t usually mix. Students are also learning maths and science in practice.
The importance of failures in making food is as much as successes. Li Mei, 11, was crazy about the yummy cakes made by her father and wanted to make one on her own. But when taking her cake out, she was frustrated(沮丧的) to find that the cake was hard and black at the bottom. Her father told her when he was 13, he tried to make cakes, but wasted boxes of eggs. Then together with Father, Li Mei found out what had gone wrong and succeeded in making one. Li Mei learned in the failure of cooking, and could be braver to face failures.
Apart from the practical skills, cooking builds character. It encourages kids to work with others. It also encourages them to be open to foods they might not have tried. Though being good to our health, carrots were hated by 12-year-old Xiao Lei. But he started to love them after he made a salad with them. By cooking, students put down their phones and work together with family members in the kitchen. By cooking, students form the habit of doing labor work. As a part of labor education, cooking is a way to teach kids vital 21st century skills, such as creativity, teamwork and so on. If these skills aren’t taught to today’s students, they might hardly survive in the future.
47.What does the writer think of “learning cooking” in primary schools?
A.It needs better understanding.
B.It’s just a useful skill for students.
C.It’s really a waste of time.
D.It must be canceled as a show.
48.What’s the relationship between cooking and other subjects according to the passage?
A. B.
C. D.
49.What does the writer think of failure in cooking?
A.Cooking can help people avoid failure.
B.There is no failure without success.
C.Failure is as important as success.
D.Cooking is sure to be failure at last.
50.Why does the writer mention the change of Xiao Lei?
A.To show us carrots are good for our health.
B.To encourage kids to work with others.
C.To educate kids to be open to different foods.
D.To teach us how to make a salad with carrots.
51.What does the underlined word vital in the last paragraph mean?
A.Necessary. B.Difficult. C.Creative. D.Simple.
(2023·江苏泰州·中考真题)
I love snakes, while my mother does not. Lots of people who are afraid of snakes have never seen one. Neither has my mother. So where does the fear come from?
To find out the answer, scientists put pictures with snakes, pandas, cats, flowers and many other things in front of a group of people of all ages, even babies. People found snakes faster than flowers. It wasn’t just snakes. They found “black faces”, another example, spiders(蜘蛛), faster than “safe” things like flowers. It seems we find things that might be dangerous to us faster. Maybe we are born to be afraid of them.
Scientists also found people learned to fear snakes faster. Why did they fear snakes? Most of them said that in their experiences, they were influenced by the scared voice and faces of those who met snakes, but wasn’t bitten by snakes. After all, if we had to be bitten by a snake to learn that it’s dangerous, we might learn our lesson too late.
So why is it important whether we are afraid of snakes or not? It may not matter much to us, but it is really very important to snakes. People protect animals they like, not animals they fear. Snakes may not be as cute as pandas, but they’re just of the same importance to the environment. Snakes eat insects and mice that are pests(害虫) to humans. Snakes are also food for other animals, so, when we kill snakes, we’re breaking the balance.
How can we reduce our fears to give snakes a chance? Scientists did a study recently. Some volunteer students went on a field trip. With the help of safety tips, everyone could safely touch and hold a snake. It turns out that snakes aren’t so bad when you know the way to stay with them. Most people who were afraid of snakes before the field trip weren’t afraid afterwards. In fact, snakes even became some students’ favorite animal. Hmm, maybe I should take my mom on the next field trip.
52.In the writer’s opinion, what are “black faces”?
A.Things make people feel dangerous.
B.Faces of animals in the picture.
C.Things that have black faces.
D.Faces of people in danger.
53.What does the writer mean by saying “we might learn our lesson too late” in the third paragraph?
A.We might never see any snakes.
B.We are not in danger any longer.
C.We might not fear snakes any more.
D.We might already be killed by snakes.
54.How do the scientists help people reduce the fear of snakes?
A.By teaching people skills of killing snakes.
B.By driving snakes away through a field trip.
C.By teaching them the right way to stay with them.
D.By giving snakes a chance to show they are good.
55.What can we learn from scientists after reading the passage?
A.Don’t be afraid and find chances in danger.
B.Always remember to give people safety tips.
C.Face failures bravely and never give up trying.
D.Find problems and do research to solve them.
56.Which fits the scientists’ idea best?

Paper is one of our oldest, simplest and most important inventions. It is the pride of us Chinese, but it also presents a danger to the world.
First, the making of paper requires the loss of many millions of trees each year. According to The World Counts, between 2001 and 2019, the world lost a total of 386 million hectares of forest. Of the trees that were cut down, 42 percent went to paper production. That represents a great part of the world’s forests. And worldwide use of paper is expected to double in the next 40 years. Clearly, the planet cannot keep such a high rate of forest Loss.
The second great problem with paper is that when the paper is used, it is useless. A great deal of wastepaper ends up in rubbish and even landfills (废物填埋场),where it can produce harmful gases. Paper in landfills causes the release (释放) of methane, a gas that is an important factor (因素) in climate (气候) change all around the world.
One simple way to help out can greatly reduce both of these problems: paper recycling. Instead of cutting down trees, recycle used paper to meet the need of paper-making. Effective recycling requires an effort from everyone all over the world. The way to begin is with education and understanding. Once enough people realize the need for recycling, more effective recycling systems can be put into use.
The need is real. The loss of tees influences everybody on earth. Everyone should do their part to recycle paper and encourage government and industry to do the same. The world will be a better place for it!
